Review: One of Them Days - Give Keke Palmer More Work

Best friends and housemates Dreux and Alyssa head out across town on a series of money-making adventures when Alyssa's boyfriend steals their rent money and their landlord threatens them with eviction.

One of Them Days is one of those LA-odyssey, dog day afternoon-type movies, like The Big Lebowski or Friday, in which friends are roped into a series of outrageous trials that take them across town to succeed in their mission. In this case, Dreux and Alyssa must come up with $1,500 before 6 o'clock that evening so they don't get evicted from their apartment.

One of Them Days has the tone of these slacker comedies but leans more into its physical comedy as Alyssa and Dreux take on any challenge they come across to make some cash, from donating four pints of blood in one go, to climbing an electricity pole to grab a pair of Air Jordans that belong to local thug Lolo, who adds an extra $5,000 to their bill - and a death sentence - by demanding a refund for his stolen shoes. Alongside these high-stakes sequences, the film is coloured by funny cameos from Janelle Jameel as a squeamish blood bank nurse, Maude Apatow as the apartment complex's oblivious but well-intentioned harbinger of gentrification and Katt Williams as Lucky, the neighbourhood's wannabe wiseman.

The real strength of the film, however - and they pack some serious punch - is the dynamic between Dreux and Alyssa. Like Amy and Molly in Booksmart, their dynamic is a brilliant and silly display of female relationships and all of the highs, lows and stupid shit that comes with it. Alyssa and Dreux laugh together, lift each other up, take care of each other and smack each other down as hard as only two lifelong friends can.

One of Them Days is an energetic buddy-comedy with two magnetic lead performances by Keke Palmer and SZA. It's a bumpy ride - King Lolo's threat seems unnecessary given everything else the two women have been through all day - but it's one you'll go back to again and again for the thrill and the fun of it.

One of Them Days mixes over-the-top antics with real-world drama. Like most comedies, it’s a little ridiculous at times, but it’s a great buddy comedy that leaves you feeling hopeful - and who doesn’t need that right now?

Promise of the premise

When Alyssa (SZA) and Dreux (Keke Palmer) get their rent money stolen by Alyssa’s boyfriend, they have one day to get the money back and make it to Dreux’s job interview before they’re evicted.

What are its strengths?

For a movie with a big tonal spectrum - from murder to a dishwasher that malfunctions so hard it blows somebody across the room - One of Them Days does a good job finding balance.

Keke Palmer and SZA have great chemistry, and all of the side characters are hilarious in unique ways - something that can make or break a comedy.

What are its weaknesses?

Some of the plot points, including a fake-out involving Dreux’s crush, fall a little flat. Do we really think anyone is going to get murdered in this comedy? Besides, avoiding eviction and nailing a job interview are life or death stakes already!

But the movie’s big baddy, King Lolo (Amin Joseph), is truly terrifying.

Does it deliver?

Definitely. It's funny and works for anyone who’s struggled to make ends meet or just get through a bad day, whether you fully identify with Alyssa and Dreux’s culture or not.

Who should see it?

Comedy fans. Anyone who likes retro Jordans. Anyone who likes Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Anyone who wants to see Katt Williams as a Jesus figure trying to save people from predatory loans.

(Seriously people. Payday loans are a scam. “If you don’t have the money this month, you’re not gonna have it next month.”)

Presence - Steven Soderbergh directs Lucy Liu and Julia Fox in this horror film with a screenplay by David Koepp. The 85-minute film premiered at Sundance last year to excellent reviews.

Star Trek: Section 31 - Michelle Yeoh returns as Philippa Georgiou in this new original Star Trek film for Paramount+.

January 31st

Dog Man - Based on the children's graphic novel series comes this superhero comedy featuring the voices of Pete Davidson and Lil Rel Howery.

Companion - Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid star in this romantic psychological thriller.

Love Me - Also premiering at Sundance last year, was this post-apocalyptic romance starring Kirsten Stewart and Steven Yuen.

Now for a quick look ahead to November, my top picks for next month are Captain America: Brave New World and The Monkey.

Issa Rae, the co-creator of HBO’s Insecure, is tackling a re-imagining of Set It Off, New Line’s crime thriller that starred Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah.

Rae will produce the new project with an eye to star. Producing with her will be Montrel McKay, her partner at Issa Rae Productions.

Syreeta Singleton (Black Monday) and Nina Gloster (Star) have been hired to pen the script.
