8 Shows to Get to Know Me
Star Trek Voyager: my original found family fandom! I grew up wanting to be Janeway, and yes, dammit, there is coffee in that nebula. I love all the Treks, but this was *mine.*
Looney Tunes: I maintain that Bugs Bunny is a cornerstone of a classical education. And you can learn physics from Roadrunner cartoons. See? Educational!
Bullwinkle: Moose and Squirrel — the original himbo and the plucky sidekick — plus Boris and Natasha. What’s not to love? (Now you begin to understand my sense of humor.)
Castle: So much snark and banter, plus a sweet father/daughter relationship (with more snark and banter). Yup, on brand.
Siren: I only just discovered this but it is my new obsession. Feral mermaids? I’m all in.
Gargoyles: my middle school obsession. Magic, mystery, a Beauty-and-the-Beast type relationship, high-tech bad guys vs. solid stone… it was awesome. I made so many notebooks of new gargoyle characters.
Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries: the sass! the found family! the UST YEARNING. My mom would have loved this show.
Gunsmoke: I grew up watching this with my dad and still do. Great writing, great characters, great stories. (And some silly episodes like the time Mary Florine’s brothers hid a prize bull and a still underneath the school, with predictable results, but that can be fun too.)
As soon as I post this, I know I will smack myself in the forehead and want to add more, so I will get a head start by adding honorable mention:
9. J.A.G. My first TV ship, and possibly the first time I stumbled across a fandom website. A revelation.
10. Everything Star Wars. No, I can’t pick just one! The first and forever fandom of my heart, I am living for the explosion of new content, but I will always love the original trilogy best.

Last night I was furiously googling trying to place a scene from a drama or film where a character eats a strawberry and says "sweet" suggestively because there was a similar moment in 180D. No, I did not find it and no, my memory will not supply me with any further details to end my torment.

I have resisted writing my thoughts on La Pluie this week because I have too much on my plate. But the urge is strong and I am weak.
First Lomfon
Anyway... I want to say something about Lomfon. I love him and I've been intrigued by him since day one. He is a lost puppy that has made ALL the mistakes. I read @heretherebedork 's worries about Tien and Lomfon and I think we can trust that they will be fine. Lomfon is now starting to go back and fix the mess he's made, and he starts with Tai. we can thank @syrena-del-mar for putting it wonderfully here - Tai is self-obsessed and self-absorbed, so his conversation with Lomfon in ep 11 is really lighthearted. He is the one not taking things too seriously because it's not about himself. It is about Tien so Tai is all he will be fine, he always ends up fine, it's fine, trust me, I know him, I know what he likes, just talk to me, I'll help you out. This is not about me, and I told you I'm good so relax man. It's gonna be fine.
On the other hand, Lomfon is about to die of seriousness and pain. You can see on his face how much he needs to make things right with Tai before he allows himself to fix things with Tien. Lomfon knows Tien, and he knows that his main concern is Tai's emotional wellbeing (seriously, you put it so well @syrena-del-mar ), and there is no way he will be fine moving ahead with Lomfon unless Tai is good.
Then Communication
This all leads me to something that I've been wanting to say for a few weeks now. I find it most interesting how this show comments about communication in relationships. It came together for me this ep when they paralleled Tai's soulmate connection with his parents' soulmate connection. What keeps their love for each other, be it romantic or not, is the fact that they were and still are communicating through it all. They have real conversations both when it rains and when it doesn't rain. And they keep communicating even after the divorce. They are using their soulmate connection the way they should.
I really get Tai here. He is a kid who only gets part of the picture (as all kids do) of his parents' relationship, and he makes assumptions on which he bases his own actions in his own relationships.
What I mean is that because he also suffers from hearing loss, he is the only brother who can't witness his parents communicating as soulmates. When it rains, he turns inwards and also turns sort of blind. He doesn't really learn anything from his parents' experience because he can't see it. He knows how to communicate with his environment, and the show establishes it in the opening when Tai reviews all the different ways people with hearing loss can communicate with people who hear. The thing that he's missing is the ability to communicate with people like him - mainly the one person he needs to communicate with, which is his soulmate and potential romantic partner. From his POV there is no need to put in the effort with your soulmate because you can hear each other when it rains. AND THAT IS ENOUGH.
Well Tai, I hate to be the bearer of bad news BUT you will need to learn that relationships need communication. Hearing is not listening. Having a soulmate connection doesn't mean being able to read each other's minds. It is a basic connection that needs to be built upon, but will not last without communication. When Patts is screaming at him communicate with me! Tai can only respond with read my mind and find out because he hasn't figured it out yet.
I liked how Tai had to lose the hearing loss, and consequently the soulmate connection, in order to understand what communication should look like between partners. When he'll get back together with Patts, it's not going to be rebuilding, it's going to be learning and building from the ground, because Patts and him were not communicating on the same frequency. Patts was communicating, while Tai was only hearing.
So, to sum up, I love this show.

nine people i'd like to know better
tagged by @princesssarcastia Thank you! I should really do these more
last song: it was either "Walls could talk" by Halsey or "Force of nature" by Bea Miller but I can't actually remember which
favorite colour: blue. specifically the silver blue that moving water turns when the sun bounces off it just right, the blue-green-turquoise that really cold mountain lakes turn when its clear, and the blue-purple the sky turns when the sun's not there but its not quite dark yet/anymore
currently watching: gosh so many things 😬, I'm just going to count things that I've been actively watching in the last week otherwise this list will be enormous since I have chronic 'stop-watching-in-the-middle-of-a-series' syndrome, so: Friends, Charmed (og) (again), live-action one piece (if I've seen the first episode it definitely counts), and I'm halfway through a tatort episode that I had to pause in the middle yesterday
last movie/tv show: huh, I kind of covered that already, but I'm going to go with the last film I watched because I feel like being in the middle of several tv series doesn't count, which I think was live-action the Little Mermaid
spicy/savory/sweet: sweet, definitely sweet, although I'm not immune to a kick of spice in my sweet things. it makes it interesting.
relationship status: long-distance relationship bc we live on opposite ends of the country rn
current obsession(s): charmed (og), batfam (WFA if I'm being specific), I'm back down the star wars rabbit hole which is good bc I have a fic to finish but bad bc I'm looking longingly at the wrong part of the fic bc I don't want to be sad, and for some reason star trek, which is weird bc it's the only one on this list I haven't consumed some kind of media for recently
last thing you googled: the local water company (which I'm not going to name bc duh)
and I'm tagging: @mayfriend @cozytuna @thewomaninlilywhite @thosebitingdoxies @rthstewart @syrena-of-the-lake @wingedflight @mischiefandspirits and @thepeskycritter

You haven’t been active today and i was concerned caz i thought maybe that six form thingy made you sad or something 😭 anyways im glad ure okay and just drawing :D tell us a bit about ur ocs? :D
ACK- U WERE WORRIED?? THAT MAKES ME HAPPY BUT YEAH IM FINE NOW
anyways
im glad u asked >:)
SO! blondie in the middle is called andi. she is captain of a ship called the black beauty. she ran away from home at the age of 19. her brother died when she was 15. girl got buckets of trauma. loves her crew. was voted queen of the seas a while back. pansexual. bit of a whore but we love her
the one kissing her head is ryka. she is the princess of aeria and she joins andi's crew for a brief time bc she wants to find the heart of the ocean (theres so much more lore but its like i dont wanna give too much away). the reason she's the only one really interacting with andi properly in the drawing is bc they are endgame. shes a lesbian but was arranged to marry a man (not bc the world is homophobic, its just she hated the rest of the suitors her parents approved of)
next to ryka is lukas. he was andi's childhood friend and first love. they were together at the age of 13-14, but eventually broke up bc best if they were friends (loved each other platonically not romantically. thats why hes further away than the others). however, when andi gets with iris and aria leaves, they fall out and he eventually goes to find aria. at the timeline in the story, he is dead
laying on andi's lap is rosa. she is actually one of my favourites to write. a girlboss. an icon. she is a prostitute, but like shes knows what shes worth and wont take shit from anyone. her and andi don't love each other (hence the reason u cant see her face), but andi is like her fav client and shes andis fav whore i guess (that sounds fucked up but like they genuinely are friends and care about each other)
on the floor is syrena. shes a mermaid. and like she is completely and utterly in love with andi (they have slept together) but it is one-sided. andi cares for her as a friend, but isnt in love with her. thats why shes on the floor and looking up, showing her devotion as such, but how unrequited it is. the definition of the other woman. shes actually really sweet (despitr always suggesting to eat ryka so andi doesnt have any problems)
the one looking up at andi is aria. she wasn't friends with andi as long as lukas was, but was still a childhood friend. she met lukas through being andi's gf at the time. they went out for a few months when they were 14, but then aria said she wanted to focus on training and they broke up (andi was starting to fall in love with her but understood and was ok being friends). after andi started spiraling, she left and joined the navy for where they are from (i cant remember what i called the place and my notebook is god knows where)
then last but certainly not least is iris. she is a priestess for the deities. she got with andi just after her brother died (andi doesnt have the best coping mechanisms) she knew of this prophecy about the heart of the ocean and whilst she did care for andi, she was kind of manipulating her for the deities so this prophecy could be fulfilled. andi worshipped her. i wouldnt say it was love bc of unhealthy it was but she was obsessed. when andi ran away, they said goodbye and broke up but yeah. shes really powerful. she does care for andi and then in the future helps them find the heart and fix all the problems that come with the heart
thats all of them in the photo, soz for the long post i could go on for hours

Since you're also in other fandoms, are there any ships/pairings you like? Who's your favourite pairing in POTO? Who are your favourite characters (from POTO to all your other fandoms) and why? Ooh, here's a rather unusual one: who's your favourite side character (name one for all your fandoms!) and why?
Yeah, definitely! Though whether some can be counted as actual “ships” is debatable, as you’ll see in a bit.
For Phantom, my favorite “ship” is the love triangle - E/C/R. Not in a polyamorous, threesome way, but one where I love the dynamics of the characters, the way they affect one another, the ways Erik and Raoul are similar and different. So it’s not quite a “ship” in a traditional sense where I want characters to end up with each other, but more in the sense that I like to explore and analyze them.
As for other “ships” or pairings, I’m just going to list, like, every fandom or random-ass thing I’ve ever loved in semi-chronological order (time to go back to my middle school fandoms!). Under the cut for length.
Harry Potter: Sirius Black and Harry Potter. I adored the godfather-godson bond between the two (absolutely no romance; I clicked on an mpreg fic of the two when I was but a wee lass of twelve and it scarred me): how Harry was the last living reminder of Sirius’s best friend, whose death he still feels responsible for; how Sirius is the parental figure Harry wanted, how they were never able to be happy god damn it Rowling. (You can imagine how much my eleven year old self cried when I read the fifth book. Oh boy, the tears.)
Star Wars: Vader and Luke. Again, totally familial, father-son relationship only. (Speaking of scarring experiences, I once stumbled on a romance fic between the two, where yes, both of them were still father and son, and I have that summary etched into my brain permanently.) The way Vader obsessively hunts down Luke, the first emotional connection he has had with a person in literal decades! The way Luke has just ached all his life for a father figure, to the point where he will take a homicidal Sith lord if that’s who he is! How he never gives up on trying to redeem him! How Luke is right. Loud screeching.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Will Turner and Bootstrap Bill and Will Turner and Henry Turner. More sad father-son dynamics (you may be noticing a pattern here). Repeat what I said with the Star Wars relationships, only with more pirates and less homicide. (And way more parental abandonment guilt.)
Halloween: Michael Myers and Laurie Strode,  remake universe. Yet again, no romance, just a severely messed-up brother-sister relationship. I can’t begin to tell you why I like the horrific relationship between a serial killer and the little sister he was so obsessed with he ruined her life, completely traumatized her, and ended up leading to her death, but I do. Maybe it’s the dark obsession aspect of it, that in the midst of all his murders, there’s still one person Michael Myers longs to have a connection with, the baby sister who represented total innocence in his mind. Maybe it’s the “what could have been” aspect too, as Laurie never recognizes him or realizes their connection until it’s far too late. Maybe I need to re-examine my life choices. I’ll figure it out someday.
Bat Boy The Musical: Bat Boy/Shelley. Yes, this is a romance; yes, they are half-brother and half-sister, yes, you can get on me about this, but in my defense how about you watch the musical and NOT come out of it shipping these two against all your better instincts.
POTO: E/C/R, as stated above and for all those reasons. Oh, and you know what - The Phantom and Gustave from Love Never Dies. Can’t get away from those father-son ships. I actually care about that relationship than E/C or R/C in LND (maybe because both E/C and R/C suck in the sequel so what else am I going to latch onto).
Batman: Listed here, but my heart really lies with three ships. Jaytim is the first: it’s the whole “angry woobie destroyer of worlds who hates everyone meets seemingly well-adjusted and cheerful individual who is secretly hiding their own issues” dynamic. Bane/Talia from The Dark Knight Rises is the second. Doesn’t matter if it’s familial, friendship, protector and protectee, or romantic, I eat it up, and to be fair, it’s never explicitly stated what the relationship is in the movie. All we know is that the two grew up together in a hellhole prison, probably dependent on and solely trusting only one another, and that bond continues even after they leave, and not even death will make them leave one another. Finally, we have Jason Todd/therapy from the Arkham games. Because the poor guy needs it.
MCU: STEVE/BUCKY (aka Stucky). This ship (again, could be friendship or romantic) dominated my thoughts for four years. Steve’s fish-out-of-water status! Bucky’s horrific imprisonment under Hydra. The way the two find each other after and the angst. The fact that Steve refuses to kill Bucky and, even after seventy years, succeeds in breakthing through to him because their connection runs that deep. The fact that Marvel just ruined this relationship so now I have to rely on fanfic. Oh yes, and I also slowly fell into the Kastle ship (Frank Castle aka The Punisher and Karen Page). Another “hardened killer with sad backstory who connects to idealistic young woman with hidden darkness” dynamic.
Terminator: T-800 aka “Uncle Bob” and John Connor. Returning to sad father-son dynamics, I have this from Terminator 2. A robot learning emotions! A boy learning to take his place as a leader and all-loving hero. The bond they form, partially because the T-800 will do nothing else but protect John and partially because John has no father-figure of his own, so his robot bodyguard will do. THE ENDING.
ASOIAF/GOT: I actually have very few ships from here other than Arya/Gendry (and only when they’re older) and, weirdly, Theon/Sansa from the show. The Gendrya ship is just cute, it may well be the most wholesome ship on here, while Theonsa has shades of Stucky in it, I suppose, given that Theon has been tortured so badly he can barely remember his own name, until Sansa turns up and reminds him enough that he breaks out of it to help her.
Favorite characters from each of those:
Harry Potter: My favorite characters from here are probably more side characters, so I’ll just say Hermione Granger. Her focus on academics, fear of failure, and conviction that the library holds all the answers, felt all too reminiscent of myself.
Star Wars: Darth Vader,  no contest whatsoever. Cool mask, cool cape, cool lightsaber, and the absolute worst life one can imagine.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Interestingly, Will Turner. Yeah, I guess Jack Sparrow is cool and Elizabeth is absolutely awesome to watch and has the greatest change in the series, but oh-so-serious Will, with his deep loyalties and slow slide into moral ambiguity because of those loyalties, fascinates me.
Halloween: Laurie Strode, all versions. My favorite final girl, my survivor of trauma (except in the remake, where, well, she doesn’t survive). Also, her daughter in the Thorn trilogy, Jamie Lloyd, the most tragic little girl to walk across a horror movie screen.
Bat Boy The Musical: Ah, wow, haven’t thought about this. I guess Bat Boy and Shelley, more by default than anything.
POTO: Christine Daae, no contest. Love her character, love her arc, love her songs, love her costumes.
Batman: Listed here.
MCU: Bucky Barnes (unless he counts as a side character), but I also love Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, Karen Page, Elektra Natchios... and I’ll leave it at that.
Terminator: John Connor. (There’s a reason I haven’t watched Dark Fate yet... or ever.)
ASOIAF/GOT: Three of them! Daenerys Targaryen, who I love because she tries so hard to rule well, who is so observant and cognizant of the things going on around her. Then Sansa Stark, who makes such astounding growth, who retains her empathy and compassion throughout, who is capable of startling perception and insight which most others underestimate. And finally, Cersei Lannister. She’s terrible. I love her.
And favorite side characters from each of those:
Harry Potter: Sirius Black may well have been my first fictional crush. But Remus Lupin is the kind of person (and teacher) I aspire to be.
Batman: I swear, depending on the comic series or movie, everyone is a side character. I’ll just link to my old ask again.
Star Wars: Batman syndrome all over again; every character in Star Wars might be a side character elsewhere, and every side character gets to be the main character of their own comic, book, movie, etc. Erm... I really liked Rose from the sequel trilogy and Chirrut Imwe from Rogue One. I find Mara Jade from the Legends universe fun to read. WAIT I GOT IT - Queen Amidala’s handmaidens from Episode I (Sabe, Rabe, Eirtae, Yane, Sache). Highly trained in both politics, decorum, and weaponry, able to be utterly nondescript or the Queen’s decoy at the drop of a hat? I love.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Hmm... you know what, I thought Syrena the mermaid was pretty cute.
Halloween: Rachel Carruthers! Your typical girl-next-door but well done and with a touching relationship with her foster sister. I will die mad about her death in the fifth movie.
Bat Boy The Musical: Uh.... I’ll get back to you on this...
POTO: Carlotta is super fun.
MCU: Oh heck, Dottie Underwood. (My taste in female characters goes like this: a) intelligent and observant, 2) sweet and compassionate, 3) batsh*t insane. She’s the third.)
Terminator: Not sure how much of a side character she is, but Kate Connor. Wife and second-in-command to John Connor, able to heal wounds and kick butt depending on what the movie requires.
ASOIAF/GOT: I’ll probably think of someone else, but you know what? Queen Rhaenys Targaryen, younger sister and wife to Aegon the Conqueror, whom he wed out of desire. Playful, spirited, loved to fly, sponsored musicians, initiated reforms for the smallfolk, what’s not to love? (Apart from one possibility of her death... but we don’t talk about that.)

Which of your posts are you fondest of/proudest of?
Thank you for giving me an excuse to talk about the La Pluie Meta Round Up. It is without a doubt the thing I am proudest of doing on this website.
A bit of lore for you, anon. @bengiyo and I became obsessed with this show early on, because we keyed into what it was doing by way of subverting major romance tropes as well as showcasing a more authentic experience of male sexual desire than we typically get in bl. And despite its brilliance, hardly anyone was watching, and half the people who were didn’t get what the show was doing. So we decided we absolutely were not going to be normal about it.
The not so secret secret is that I created this meta round up explicitly to encourage more people to post about this show. And it worked. Other folks who were watching and understood what the show was doing started writing masterpieces about its brilliance. I met some awesome people like @sunshinechay and @syrena-del-mar and my bestie @neuroticbookworm because of their writing about this show. We built a little community around it and even if most of tumblr wasn’t watching or getting it, our small but mighty meta army was having the time of our lives.
And I’ve been so pleased to see @ranchthoughts doing something similar on Only Friends with the ephemerality squad and the weekly round ups she’s posting. I love writing and talking about the shows on here in community, so I will always be most proud and excited of the posts that bring us together.

5 Songs Tag - QL Edition
I was so happy to get tagged in this by @thegalwhorants I'm keeping the credit tag to @trouble-mind and the link to the original post here.
Here are the rules
When you get this, list 5 songs from the Asian QL shows that you actually listen to.
🎶They do not have to be custom-made for the series.
🎶Non-western tracks only. Let's support Asian music and languages!
🎶Feel free to tag anyone who may be interested in participating.
🎶Add #5qls tag to your post for others to find the new favourites!
OK, so I love music and I listen to all sorts of genres. right now I am pretty much consumed by Tilly Birds as well as western prog-rock. I did make a playlist titled "my current obsession" to house the bl soundtracks, which I enjoy very much but has my partner threatening to leave if they have to listen to these songs one more time... (we try to make it work :D)
Can I Say The Word Love With You by Boy Sompob - Between Us OST. I had to put this song on the list because 1) I really like it. It makes me feel things, 2) Boy has the most beautiful voice, and 3) it's the first song in Thai that I can actually UNDERSTAND which makes me happy and somewhat proud of myself.
youtube
2. Just Trust (Free Fall) by Slot Machine - KinnPorsche OST. This is the first Thai bl song that grabbed me. I like rock music and it's a song I would choose to listen to unrelated to the series.
youtube
3. Same Page? by Tilly Birds - Bad Buddy OST. I love Tilly Birds and I love this song. The more I understand Thai, the more I appreciate Their lyrics and the fact that they can fit Thai into the music they do without turning to English when they can't make it work. aLso, this song really fits Pat and Pran's story.
youtube
4. I'm Not Boring You're Just bored by Tilly Birds - Only Friends Trailer. I'm shamelessly stealing this from @thegalwhorants. I hadn't realized it was used in the trailer until she mentioned it in her own list and now I can put it on my list as well :)
youtube
5. Talay See Dam cover by Billkin and PP Krit - I Promised You The Moon OST. What is there to say? The song is beautiful, the lyrics are making me sink in my feels, and their voices are so calm and soothing. I just love it.
youtube
I love the idea of this game and I'm going to add some new songs to my playlist.
@fluidsoul31, @syrena-del-mar, @nerdybunnydestiny, @so-much-yet-to-learn I don't know if you like these games (and I hope you don't mind the tag), but if you're up for it I'd love to see your lists :)

Favorite Female Characters Meme
Rules: name your top 10 favorite female characters from different fandoms, then tag 10 people. (Anyone who wants to play: tag, you’re it!)
I was tagged by @klaineharmony - thank you for the walk down memory lane! Now I have more old favorites to revisit... ☺️ I don’t have pretty pictures, so have some anecdotes instead:
1. Leia Organa, Star Wars: the start of my Star Wars obsession, fearless princess and compassionate general, sharp-witted and sharp-tongued and kind-hearted.
2. Mara Jade, Star Wars Legends (hey, it counts!): Mara was the first character I encountered dipping my toes into the EU, and remains my favorite. She may be the stuff of Legends (har) but sue will always be canon to me.
3. Lucy and Susan Pevensie, Chronicles of Narnia: Don’t make me pick just one. When I was little, I wanted to be like Susan — clever and quiet and competent — and my love for and understanding of her had only grown and deepens with time. But Lucy is faith and light and fierceness and wonder and who wouldn’t follow her anywhere? And now, I want to be more like Lucy.
4. Captain Kathryn Janeway, Star Trek Voyager: Scientist and leader, strong and compassionate, and oh how I wanted to be her, growing up! And now I finally appreciate her deep and abiding love for coffee, so maybe I have finally attained some level of Janewaness.
5. Belle, Beauty & the Beast: The first Disney princess I saw and recognized myself in. She walked around with her nose in a book, just like me! She dreamed of far-off places, just like me! Maybe the origin of my adoration for female characters who are intelligent and brave and stubborn and have loving hearts as big as the sky.
6. Hermione Granger, Harry Potter: I don’t know any girl my age who doesn’t like Hermione. “Books and cleverness” and a deep desire to make the world better, and abiding loyalty. A little bossy for my taste, but it makes her so real.
7. Eowyn, The Lord of the Rings: Shieldmaiden of Rohan, Wraith-slayer, fearing only a cage and refusing to be kept in one! I have always loved Eowyn, and on my first read I remember thinking she belonged with Aragorn... until she met Faramir.
8. Phryne Fisher, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries: Who can describe Miss Fisher? She is so much fun, and a force of nature. Our Lady of Lockpicks. I never get tired of these shows, and her banter with Jack, and her outlandish... everything. Heaven help whoever stands in her way!
9. Firekeeper, the wolf woman protagonist of the Firekeeper series by Jane Lindskold: Literally raised by wolves, Firekeeper thinks as a wolf does, and she is one of the most fascinating characters I’ve ever read. I love how she holds onto her wolfishness when trying to learn to move among the “two-leggers,” and her unique way of seeing the world is a treat to read.
10. Amelia Peabody, the Amelia Peabody mysteries by Elizabeth Peters: Amelia is simply superlative. She is like a Victorian Miss Fisher, in a way — so headstrong and over the top that it’s funny, but you can’t help but be pulled along for the ride. And any woman who can master the dual, duelling passions of archaeological fever and detectival fever is one to be admired.
Honorable mentions, because I have too many favorites:
11. Rey, Star Wars Sequel Trilogy: The only reason Rey is down this far is because I had too many Star Wars ladies already. I love her character, and her relentless hope touched me deeply.
12. Cimorene, Enchanted Forest Chronicles: The most practical princess! Friend to dragons, banisher of wizards, common sense personified. She is a wonder and a joy.
13. Tess Sorenson, protagonist of the Novels of the Jaran by Katie Elliott: Tess has a wonderful character arc, growing out of her insecurities to carve a place for herself in a primitive, nomadic culture on an alien world.
14. Luna Lovegood, Harry Potter: I simply adore Luna, her oddball but insightful way of seeing the world, her unflinching compassion for others.
15. Miss Bianca, the Rescuers: So elegant, so classy, so blithe in the face of danger!
16. ... does Raptor Red count? (Raptor Red by Robert Bakker) Of course she does, she’s a Utahraptor — I’m hardly going to be the one to say no!

Summary: The spaceship Enigma is more than a relic from an old war, and more than meets the eye. (Fortunately for her, because the life of an ore-hauler is not glamorous.) Her new passenger may be exactly what she seems — a petty thief, a drifter, a Renegade — but Enigma has not survived this long by making assumptions based on appearance. From the 2020 Worldbuilding Exchange. (3295 words)
This is one of my favorites among my own stories: an original scifi story featuring a sentient spaceship and spycraft. I’m really happy with how it turned out, and I got pretty attached to the characters along the way. I’d love to revisit this little corner of the universe if I can ever come up with a followup plot.

Quarantine Q&A
Tagged by @rthstewart
Are you staying home from work/school?
Yes, I am working from home and will be for some time. I have a dining room table and lots of windows and a growing collection of coffee mugs and dinosaur figurines to keep me company. (I also have a lovely office desk sitting unused upstairs because it needs to be excavated from underneath Too Much Stuff.)
If you’re staying home, who’s with you?
My dad, who is currently ensconced in his office watching videos on fishing. Yes, we have cabin fever.
Are you a homebody?
Yes, but I am a homebody with wanderlust and I’m getting itchy feet.
What movies have you watched recently? What shows are you watching?
Mainly TV shows, because I haven’t had much time or attention span in the evenings. Gunsmoke, the Burns & Allen Show, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Star Trek Voyager, Rat Patrol, Game of Thrones, and Firefly. How’s that for eclectic?
Did an event that you were looking forward to get cancelled?
Not a fixed date event (yet), but I’m on tenterhooks about a family member’s wedding, though. And any tentative out-of-state travel plans I’d started daydreaming about, needless to say, are on indefinite hold.
What music are you listening to?
Nature sounds and vague melody as a substitute for white noise if I need to drown out the TV; else Lord of the Rings soundtrack while writing. (I can’t write well if the music has lyrics — my brain is too hard-wired to pay attention to words.)
What are you reading?
I recently finished some of the Oxford Time Travel series, and I’m rereading Little Women in fits and starts here and there. But right now I’m re-reading The Stone Gryphon by @rthstewart for comfort and hope. (I keep wanting to stop and comment on every chapter, but it’s hard to stop reading to do so!)
What are you doing for self-care?
Um, reading for comfort and watching tv to stop my mind from whirling. I take a walk every day, except when it’s snowing. And I’m starting to pose my Utahraptor figurine, Raptor Red, so I can live vicariously through her adventures.
I want to write more, but so far have only dabbled in the beginnings of a Harry Potter/Star Trek Voyager crossover (because I didn’t have enough WIPs before, argh!) and I’m contemplating an even more terribly self-indulgent crossover fic that I never thought would leave my migraine-fueled daydreams... and part of me just wants to dive into my newly expanded library of Star Wars lore... and part of me just wants to organize my sock drawer (I know, I know, “put a sock in it!”)... BUT... instead I’m eating too much chocolate and watching videos of squirrels failing to climb greased poles.
How are you?
Struggling mentally and emotionally at times, but I’m okay physically, so I’m very fortunate.

Type “[Your name] + core + aesthetic into search on pinterest (I used Unsplash) and use 9 images to make a mood board
I was tagged by @wingedflight - so it’s your fault that I’ve fallen down the new-to-me rabbit hole of mood boards! Oddly, this pretty well captures a lot of my aesthetic — lacking only books, old doors and windows, azulejos, and the sea.

If anyone knows Hydrangea’s Tumblr, let me know so I can tag them! I received this lovely gift of saltwater, sun and a siren for the Lucian Exchange — it’s a heartbreakingly beautiful take on the sea and “always a Queen” that I’ve never seen before, and I recommend you go read it now!
