So You Think You Can Dance is back! One of the reasons I first connected with this show at a time I desperately needed it was because of tWitch, who we sadly lost to the war with mental health. This is my homage to the legend. This is "tWitch's Last Dance."

just rewatched some old sytycd and am blown away by the sheer amount of dancing we used to be blessed with. compare the top ten of season 14 to season 18—in season 14, we got an opening number, a guest number, 10 duets, and 10 solos for a total of TWENTY TWO DANCES in an episode. in season 18, we got an opening number, 2 group dances, and 3 solos for a total of six dances in an episode. that is almost a 200% DECREASE in the amount of dancing on the DANCING SHOW. i fucking hate it here

#i’m so sorry i ever took for granted how the show used to beeeee #not to mention the range of styles…. literally there was hip-hop contemporary argentine tango bollywood african jazz AND broadway all in on #episode and they were almost all incredibly unique and memorable and well performed. versus the trick lyrical with a splash of contemporary #that we got almost every single episode this past season #also what the fuck is up with the complete lack of availability of the old seasons? all of the official ways to watch ONLY have season 18 #which is a complete travesty bro take me back to single digits #lu.txt #sytycd

As someone who has been trained in jazz I judge the jazz dances pretty hard. If it’s fun and creative I’m willing to be more lenient on actual moves and technique but I really wanna see at least some basic jazz moves. A jazz dance that sticks out to me is Riker and Allison’s. This worked cause Allison is a trained contemporary dancer and Riker had some prior dance experience so he was pulling out jazz turns and axels and actual jazz moves and he did them well. A bad jazz dance that has always stood out to me was Val and Heather’s. Heather can do jazz but Val cannot choreograph jazz. But their jazz dance was during Disney week and Val was trying too hard to be a fun Disney dance. Heather really should’ve been given the opportunity to at least contribute to the choreography for that dance since it’s a style she was good at.

I saw that you corrected yourself in a following message. But just in case anyone else who sees this gets confused, they’re talking about Maks, not Val.

I should probably watch Riker’s jazz again. If I’m remembering correctly, it was a trio dance and reminded me of Corbin’s jazz.

So I rewatched it and it was only similar to Corbin’s because it was a trio with two women and seemed to actually be jazz and not just a DWTS freestyle.

Yeah, Maks should’ve gotten input from Heather (and probably Alan as I’m sure he danced some jazz when he was on SYTYCD).

I was happy to see So You Think You Can Dance back on last night, and was moved by the tribute to tWitch. It was beautiful that the final story was one about the struggles of mental health. This painting is my homage to tWitch. This is "tWitch's Last Dance," and it's currently on exhibit at Sparks Gallery.

man i really hated this past season of so you think you can dance

#incredible how you can make a dance competition tv show and have so much of it not be about dance. at all.#and anthony?????? there were so many other people who should’ve won #and the downgrade from like. over 5 different dances an episode (AT LEAST) to basically two???#bitch i DONT give a fuck about solos because they’re all so boring and so trick-focused they might as well not even be dancing #we used to have multiple choreographers and pushing dancers into new styles (african jazz! bollywood! broadway! step! salsa! breaking! TAP!)#and now it’s like ohhh yay here are 10 dancers who are already well known in the dance world but we’re gonna pretend they’re unknowns #and split them in half and give them each a dance to do that’s basically always gonna be contemporary / lyrical #ugghhhhhhhh. i don’t give a fuck about them living together or the inter-contestant romances or dakayla reuniting with her estranged father #just. show me the dancing. i want to see dancing. fuck #and i know a lot of it is budget cuts but jesus they could’ve done better than this #sigh. whatever #hopefully if they get another season they’ll course correct #lu.txt #sytycd

OFMD s2 is, I think, only the second time I’ve heard “This Woman’s Work” used in something, at least memorably, and I only just learned that it was written by Kate Bush. The first time I heard the song was with this contemporary dance about breast cancer from SYTYCD over a decade ago, and it was sung by Maxwell. Anyone else see/remember this?
