Every time I see Kanan Jarrus described as "brash" and "cocky"

His character summaries in published media are hilariously inaccurate.

The Rebellion Begins (Kogge, 2014):

Kanan: The Last Padawan (Weisman, Larraz, Camagni, 2015):

No. No. No.

Kanan Jarrus isn't Han Solo version 2.0. All of the above adjectives are more fitting to a man like Han. If anything, Kanan is Han's foil, his complete opposite. His description in The Last Padawan makes it seem as if he's the one who's hellbent on fighting the Empire, the gung-ho commander of the team, when in truth it's all Hera. She's the one responsible for pushing Kanan into the Rebellion. She owns and pilots the Ghost; she's the founder and the leader of the crew.

Hera is the true Spectre-01. Kanan is actually Spectre-02, and that's why his pauldron bears the number "02". It's not a romantic gesture, like some fans believe.

From Wookieepedia, emphasis mine:

Although various sources have identified Kanan Jarrus as the leader of the Spectres, Star Wars Super Graphic: A Visual Guide to a Galaxy Far, Far Away states that Jarrus' Spectre-1 code name was given to him so that Imperials will incorrectly assume he is the group's leader, and states of Hera Syndulla, "Even though she is Spectre-2, this Twi'lek is the pilot and leader of the rebels."

Kanan is not the leader, or even a leader. Hera is. She always was. Initially, Kanan didn't want anything to do with the Rebellion, and in the second season of Rebels (The Siege of Lothal, S2 E01), he voiced his reluctance to work alongside other rebel cells, showing that even after seven years allied with Hera, he was still hesitant about taking on greater responsibilities. Hera was always the one pushing for more involvement. Kanan supported her, but only so far. He wasn't, in his own words, "ready to start another [war]."

Which brings me to the next section:

The Adjectives

Kanan isn't any definition of brash. He's cautious and controlled, always aware of danger, and not keen on taking risks, especially where the Force is concerned.

Above excerpt from The Rebellion Begins—ironically from the same book that described him as "brash"—where Hera tries to press Kanan into using the Force shortly before the events in Spark of Rebellion.

Kanan's acknowledgement of the necessity of taking risks didn't truly come into play until after he met Ezra. He actually tried to talk Hera out of recruiting him (and was right to do so).

Kanan isn't a "maverick".

Kanan's life from Order 66 until 5 BBY was nothing but him trying to blend in with the crowd and remain as inconspicuous as possible. His very survival depended on it (see also: A New Dawn; further supported by Cal Kestis's prescription for survival in Jedi: Fallen Order, below, emphasis mine):

"[T]here are three rules to survive. Don't stand out. Accept the past. Trust no one. The galaxy's changed. Whatever you do, don't reach within. Don't stand out. Accept the past. Trust no one. Trust only in the Force."

Sound advice. The last thing Kanan wanted was to draw attention, especially Imperial attention, and he did everything he could to prevent that.

Kanan is not cocky.

The man is the antithesis of self-confidence. So much of Kanan's journey in Rebels is the reclamation of his confidence and courage, coming out of the shell he'd built around himself for the last 15 years. He didn't approach Ezra with the attitude of "alright, kid, I'm gonna teach you to be a kickass Jedi!" He was reluctant to teach Ezra, wary of making mistakes, fearful of failing him, literally wracked with doubt and worry, as we see here in S1 E10, Path of the Jedi:

The only descriptor that is somewhat accurate to Kanan is "sarcastic", but he only does that occasionally, usually directed at enemies or when in situations he'd rather not be in. He doesn't make sarcasm his entire identity, unlike Han Solo, whose every other line of dialogue is a sardonic comment or quip. Even Obi-Wan is cattier than Kanan.

So why is Kanan marketed as a brash, cocky, sarcastic, arrogant maverick?

In my opinion, it's because the entertainment industry incorrectly believes a male character is only interesting if he's 1) a borderline asshole, 2) completely able-bodied and hypercompetent, 3) in possession of a great power, or 4) any combination of the previous three.

A cautious, traumatized, insecure male character who suppresses his abilities, goes with the crowd, and doesn't stand out, who is naturally tender and kindhearted toward people, isn't going to be as marketable—especially in a male-dominated arena like comics—even though it's a more accurate description of Kanan's character. He isn't the classic, charismatic hero archetype that boys can project themselves onto... unless they spin him that way to sell merch.

But the trend of the Arrogant Asshole Lead Male is declining in recent years, I've noticed. Major characters like Cassian Andor and Cal Kestis and sad desert hermit Obi-Wan Kenobi, men who are still dealing with the mental fallout of Order 66 and/or suffering under the soul-crushing oppression of the Empire, men who are haunted and traumatized and disempowered, are becoming more prevalent. Their stories are being told. That's fantastic. I'm personally bored with the same old cocky-witty-genius-talented-billionaire-playboy male stereotype (who always has a perfect comeback) that has dominated the entertainment industry for half a century. Broken, imperfect characters are a thousand times more interesting to me, and so are their stories and character development. It's difficult to develop an already-perfect character, or one who never changes.

Between Blades [SKZ x Star Wars AU]

Series Summary:

When Order 66 came down and the Republic fell, Felix Lee and Hwang Hyun Jin were just children. As Jedi Initiates, they shouldn’t have survived the slaughter, but, thanks to a miracle, they did, and now spend their days doing their best to ignore the Force and forget what might have been.

With the Clone Troopers steadily aging out of service and the reeducation equipment on Kamino lost, the Empire had to conceive of a new way to inspire unfaltering loyalty from its soldiers. In this way, they took cues from the fallen Jedi Order and looked to the group of people easiest to condition: Children. Yang Jeong In was one of those children. To fans of the Star Wars, this story takes place around the same time as Jedi: Survivor and the Obi-Wan Kenobi series (9 BBY).

A Broken Jedi (Solo)

Obi-Wan sat on the edge of his bed with a broken sigh and buried his head in his hands. For a long time, he just stayed like that, breathing in and out as slowly as he could.

Remember, my dear Obi-Wan. I loved you always. I always will.

/This is your fault. You did this./

/You failed her./

His jaw clenched and he squeezed his eyes shut. They had almost made it out. Instead, he could only watch helplessly as Maul viciously impaled her on the darksaber, and continued to watch helplessly as she died in his arms. She used her dying breath to tell him she loved him. That she always had and always will. He felt when the life left her body and felt when any connection he'd had to her whatsoever ceased to exist. He felt a hollowness inside of him that he'd felt after watching his Master die at the hands of the same man who had just killed Satine. He felt broken. Maul had achieved his goal.

/You failed. She's dead because of you./

Unable to quiet his mind even a little bit, he pounded his fist against the wall next to him and flinched.

He was still covered in cuts and bruises from his failed attempt to rescue the Duchess. To rescue Satine.

He'd fallen into the trap Maul had set for him. He made the choice to travel to Mandalore against the advice of the council.

Satine had asked for his help though. He could tell she was scared, and the part of him that had been her protector all those years ago answered her call for help because he realized he would've always dropped everything if Satine was in trouble and needed him.

What did he think would end up happening if he had been able to get her safely off Mandalore though?

Remember, my dear Obi-Wan. I loved you always. I always will.

Satine had deserved better. A better life. And better than him.

He was angry, and it was anger unlike any other he'd felt before, or at least in a long time. He'd never felt this hopeless. He'd never imagined he'd be the reason Satine would die. He always pictured her living a long life. And for some reason, he'd always pictured himself being there in one way or another.

He never thought he'd be holding her as she died in his arms.

He'd spoken with the council about it. There was a report. He retold the events as well as he could considering he was leaving out a few things, but then he went into his private quarters and tried to turn it off. He tried meditating. He tried thinking of other business he needed to tend to, but his mind was coming up empty.

This was his fault.

Even worse though, he knew she wouldn't blame him in the way he was blaming himself.

"I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry," was something he found himself repeating softly, and he could feel the tightness in his chest, the way he was struggling to control his breathing. She was gone. She was really gone. Time was up, and it was too late.

Suddenly, the dam broke and he could no longer keep himself composed. He kept his face buried in his hands as he cried. The pain and the guilt and the immense sadness and the failure and loss...it proved to be too much for him to keep in any longer. His shoulders shook as he sobbed quietly.

/I love you I love you I love you. I'm sorry, Satine. I love you. I'm so sorry./

He didn't try to quiet his thoughts this time. He didn't try to censor his feelings. Internally he felt as if he was screaming into a void. Thinking words that were coming too little, too late. Cried as he thought of the young woman he'd been sent to protect all those years ago. Despite their constant bickering, she still trusted him with her life. It hadn't been enough though. Satine had never stopped trusting him, and it ended up being her trust in him that got her killed.

He allowed himself all the time he needed to let it out. It would be the only meltdown he'd allow himself. Tomorrow he would paste on a smile, toss in a joke, and continue to pretend that he was okay, the same as he always did. He had no other choice.

Echo is 100% my Bad Batcher baby clone so I'm gonna talk about him.

We meet the Domino Squad in all their chaotic glory as they are trying to pass their tests.

We meet 99. We watch the clone trainers talk about Domino Squad being an absolute disaster and at one point referred to as a "Bad Batch". It was pointed out that Echo never adapts to the situations when they are going through their training courses. And it was Echo who was the one that was obsessed with following orders and making sure he read the manuals so he could follow all the rules.

My boy is also an epic smartass despite being a huge nerd and can sass the hell out of anyone.

One of the first things he did after being rescued by Rex from a horribly traumatic experience was to make a joke about his head hurting. He didn't let what happened change his most important objective, which was not letting go of his sense of humor.

He gets rescued and joins Clone Force 99, aka the Bad Batch. These guys SUCK at following orders and it seems like they threw the manual of rules and regulations out the airlock of their ship. They should be Echo's worst nightmare.

But he fits in easily with them despite the fact he hasn't really changed his position on rules and orders and working with walking disasters. And his inhibitor chip was so damaged on Skako Minor that it didn't come close to activating when Order 66 was executed. He was the one who was questioning the order and disagreeing with the idea that killing the Jedi who had commanded them for years. He became a defector. His personality is the same, but he's ended up in the exact opposite position now.

And he still has to put up with the ridiculous antics of Clone Force 99, much like Domino Squad.

And I think it's beautiful.

Also he's adorable and needs to be protected at all costs.

Ranting because of toxic people in fandom

You know, I'm pretty chill most of the time. I like to let people do what they do, but right now I'm just annoyed.

For the love of god, if you don't like a goddamn ship, that's fine. I couldn't give two shits if someone doesn't like my preferred ships. The problem I have is the people who try to police the fandom, who bully others for shipping something they consider problematic.

You think you're doing something, but you're actually just making fandom a toxic and unpleasant place.

I know comprehension is difficult for some of you, but let us look at some facts:

1) What a person chooses to ship has absolutely zero effect on you personally. You're choosing to take offense because you've somehow decided something that is absolutely none of your business is your business.

2) Learn to separate fiction from reality. Just because someone likes a certain ship doesn't mean they support pedophilia/incest/whatever. You putting those labels on the people who do is not only insulting but also extremely hurtful. As someone who was sexually assaulted repeatedly when I was five years old, I know what's right and what's wrong. You need to think because you start throwing these buzzwords out, and you literally don't even care about what you're doing to the person behind the screen. You are not special. You are not right even if you think you are.

3) You're literally not going to change anyone's minds. All you're doing is creating a hostile environment. Mind your own fucking business and focus more on what you love instead of what you think it's okay to abuse other people over. If you love abusing and gaslighting people, then perhaps you should question why you feel the need to act as if you're somehow superior. Newsflash, you're not. You're nothing more than a jerk.

4) I'm not a fan of some of these "problematic" ships, but I don't feel the need to attack people because, once again, this is fiction. Get your narcissistic, attention-seeking behavior away from everyone else. It's literally not harming anyone. At all. You're just looking for a reason to be big-time offended because you're somehow lacking something else in your life, and I'm fairly certain most of you wouldn't have the courage to say this shit to someone's face. Just because you think these ships are problematic doesn't mean they are.

5) Let's take a minute to look at Rexsoka (because I happen to like that ship). You're getting bent out of shape and acting like Ahsoka is 14 throughout all of Star Wars. Maybe this hasn't occurred to you, but Ahsoka ages. Like we literally see her in her 30s in Rebels. I didn't even consider shipping it until I saw the last four episodes of Clone Wars. If you're going to freak out over the age difference between Ahsoka and Rex, let's try to remember that Anakin is five years younger than Padme. (My mom was nine years younger than my dad and they were married for 42 years before she passed away.)

Like just leave people alone. Let them like what they like. This isn't a difficult fucking concept. If they're two consenting adults, then stop getting bent out of shape. You honestly look like a damn fool to those of us with comprehension skills and who understand the passage of time.

Block me if you want. I honestly don't care. I've been put through the ringer on Twitter over this and at this point and all I have to say is fuck your fake ass, performative activism. You wanna be a hero, try helping those who are actually dealing with these issues in real life.

If this offends you, don't even come at me. Just get over yourself and block me. I'm normally a very nice person with endless amounts of patience, but I've had enough of watching others get bullied over something that is 100% harmless and not doing anything to the way you are able to live your life. You're looking for a reason to bully someone. That is it. Go away. Like all these people who enjoy these ships do not give a single fuck about your opinion because they still enjoy what they enjoy anyway. Most of the time you just make them like their ship even more.

TL;DR - Get a life and leave others alone.

Sometimes, the past is best left revisited, again, and again, and again…

Welcome to 2019, folks; it used to be that I would insert a joke at this point about the dates on all of your checks being incorrect for the next week or so, but if you are still handwriting checks in 2019, then I have a cordless phone set to sell to you.

To help me recover from the festivities of the end-of-year holiday season (read: sober up), I decided to take a look back at the analytics for this humble piece of Global Interweb land and revisit the past year, in terms of what 1WD articles were deemed most popular. Popularity, in this context, is measured in sheer volume of visits (and listed in descending order, from the 10th most popular post to the first).

As many of you have noted to me both publicly and in private, 2018 was an excellent twelve months for me personally (politically, though, not so much). The important factors: my family is strong, my kiddo is doing very well, and my love life hit a high note that I only thought possible within the confines of really corny romance fiction. If you decide to waste any precious moments of your life (again) reading any of the articles linked below, please raise a glass with me while doing so, and we can toast to the genuine (on my part, anyway) wish that 2019 delivers more of the same good fortune to us all.

Kinky Sex Drinking, And “Educative” Viticulture (Back Through Time With Romanelli Montefalco Sagrantino) Man, I really, really hope that these guys don’t hate me for that title… but then, if they get any bump in sales from the exposure, it’s because people searching for kinky sex on the Internet need good wine, too.

9. The Good Sh*t (Biodynamic Preparations At Troon Vineyard) Hey, if Biodynamics minus the more bizarre hoopla gets a bit more media attention, I’m all for it (particularly when it’s tied to a star performer in an up-and-coming area of the US wine biz).

8. The Future Of Wine Writing: GrimDarkA late entry, but one that received a good deal of traction. Probably from other wine writers who were searching for how to make money. I’m joking. I think.

7. “There’s Liquid On The Brain” (Checking In With Primus And Claypool Cellars, 2018) Rock stars make for good copy. Really good rock stars who also happen to be good people who make really good wine? That makes for even better copy.

6. You Will *Learn* Patience (Tasting The 2016 Port Vintage) I’m stoked that this ended up being one of the most popular articles on 1WD last year, because it was one of the most memorable wine experiences for me in all of 2018. That an online guy got to be one of the first to give you all a critical run-down on a declared Port vintage is pretty clear sign that the wine publication times have irrevocably changed. Also, Obi-wan FTW!

5. Thoughts On Instant Pot “Wine”TLDR: those thoughts are basically “No,” and “please, just don’t.”

4. Oregon Wine Experience 2018 Competition – Results What. The. Actual. HELL?!?? Southern Oregon got mad luv from you all on these virtual pages last year. Which is strong evidence that you’re a smart bunch, IMHO.

3. This Time, It’s Personal (September 2018 Wine Product Roundup) The only way that I can explain this one is that a good number of you were doing early holiday shopping, and thought that the Personal Wine thing sounded like a fun gimmick for yourself the wine lover in your life.

2. The Times They… Uhm… Have Changed, Actually (Intowine.com’s Top 100 Most Influential People In The US Wine Industry 2018) Meta rules in the niche world of discussing niche businesses online, and so when this controversial list made its latest appearance after a hiatus of a few years, the niches filled up with folks looking for debates.

1. Naked Wines And The Cult Of “Fake News” That this was the single most visited post on 1WD in all of 2018 is, I think, a minor disaster for Naked Wines’ brand image, and a bit of a sad treatise on where we are in our discourse politically, particularly in the trend of ignoring facts and shaming knowledgeable authorities to suit personal/political/monetary gain. I suppose it’s a further underscoring of how important it is to control your brand message, do the right thing, and successfully manage damage control in today’s online-focused world (and Naked managed to f*ck up almost all of those in that example).

             Depa only smiled, settling against Obi-Wan’s side easily.  There was never any pressure between them.  His arms circled her slight frame with familiar affection, and after a moment, she tucked her face down against his neck, murmuring a soft apology when her cold nose brushed the column of his throat.

          “Of course it would be warmer, my dear Obi-Wan; but just think how romantic it looks, it’s much more important it look aesthetically pleasing,” she murmured, smiling against his neck and shutting her eyes.  Surely Anakin would be back soon, but...this was quite nice, for now...and the blonde boy was welcome to join them in huddling for warmth, though she doubted he would.  He seemed fascinated by the frost...she couldn’t blame him.
