a while back i made this post about adam parrish and max caulfield being really similar characters and lately i've been thinking about that a lot and i think it really has to do with the duality of their relationships with supernatural power and autonomy.

both of their character arcs are very reliant on receiving supernatural abilities at the beginning of their series and the aftermath this has on their self esteems. both of them gain confidence as time goes on and they master their abilities, with adam becoming the magician and max using her rewind to help bring people to justice. the confidence that comes with this power helps both of them to overcome their hamartia (adam, learning to ease the chip on his shoulder and accept help from others when the situation calls for it; max, becoming comfortable with interacting with the world around her and take some control over her own life as well).

but even though we can see that what their power is doing to them is a net good for their own personal growth, it offsets the balance of the world around them. the universe seems not to believe that they should wield this power. we see adam get possessed by the demon through his bond with cabeswater, and the reckoning of max's tampering with time causing the storm that can only end in death. i think it says something really interesting about sacrifice, which is also a huge part of both of their characters down to literal word choice in the narrative.

and of course this is resolved in a way befitting of the cyclical nature of time that is prevalent in trc and lis: even though their powers are what got them to this pivotal point against the universe in the first place, the way that their relationship with magic helped them grow as a person allows them to be capable of getting themselves out of this situation (adam letting his friends help him when he gets possessed and max being able to make a choice, one way or the other, to save someone, no matter who it may be, instead of shying away from any sort of autonomy). the universe grants them a hubris of sorts, punishes them for possessing it, but that hubris allows each of them to save themselves in spite of it all

• If the person is Nathan (who is his... well, let's say partner of those insane things), he will be definitely more protective and will keep an eye on both of you for a long time

• deadly and serious threats ahead, if he still won't leave you alone

• he will be potective because he knows Nathan very well and the crimes that himself he commited, and other side bc he's a father and he wants to keep his beautiful daughter safe

• But if the person would be for example Max, he would be more relaxed

• (He would even think trough her kidnapping. There's a chance that he won't hurt her. Even if it's hard for him to conntrol his sick addiction)

• He still tests her if she's good enough for you, but he will be more easier on her

• OR let's say the person is Warren-

• "The geek?"

• He doesn't know that much about him

• and bc of this he will definitely test him

• I mean he doesn't mind that you're with smart boys

• but you know, he has to make sure

"So, was the test okay?" you heard you father next beside you.

You nodded, even if you knew that he doesn't see you 'cause he's focusing on the road.

"Dad?" You spoke unsurely, don't know how to say out loud your thoughts.

"Yes, sweetie?" He glanced at you with a kind smile on his face, but it dissapeared when he saw how stressed you were. "What's wrong, honey?"

You tried to swallow the nervousness, but it was worthless and didn't help at all.

"So, you know those Rachel Amber missing posters? They're almost everywhere."

Mark could feel how his heart skipped a beat. Now he started to feel nervous as well.

He let out a small sigh. He didn't want that his daughter notice that he's nervous. He tried to act calmly.

"No, sweetheart." he spoke as he hid away the frustration in his voice.

"Okay." you said quietly. You sounded convinced.

He carefully glanced at you again.

"Are you scared?"

There was a couple of seconds until you answered.

"Maybe... I don't wanna imagine what terrible things those people did to her. But my mind keep distracting me, even if I don't want to think about it."

You could feel the gentle touch of his warm hands.

"Don't worry, hon. I'll keep you safe."

And with that you were convinced that your dad is there and you're more than safe with him.

• Why would he be a bad father?

I think his psychotic hobby would be more important to him than his own daughter. He would be definitely overprotective about you, but also he wouldn't be there for you. Like there's no movie night, cause again, he has things to do in the Dark Room.

Yes, he would care about his daughter, he would also be a good listener, but you rarely meet him. He wouldn't be there for you when you need him.

I don't think he would hurt his daughter physically, but don't test him. He's enough stressed about his victims.

And he would pay too much attention about keeping you safe.

"flat." her voice cut in as the music cut out, reverberating through the bulky headphones laurie wore while stood in the booth looking every bit as fragile as he probably felt. "you was flat again. and y' keep jumpin' in too soon with that line at the start 'a th' second bar, you come in on the downbeat. 'member?" their eyes remained locked through the glass window dividing them as she dug into him, her expression stern and unrelenting just like her critiques. cricket knew being back in each other's lives would prove to be a mistake— not nearly enough time had passed for them to sort through and move on from whatever complicated feelings had arisen during their former acquaintanceship, clearly, seeing as laurie looked like he was ready to practically melt into a puddle after being forced to sing the same few bars over and over again, each take straying farther and farther from acceptable. it didn't help that she'd just so happened to needle him over the most gut wrenching chunk of the song, the real emotional core in which the listener truly felt the vast numbness that came along after a bout of intense despair. a despair that had been caused by cricket herself. if interrogated, she'd just claim she was just trying to push him to achieve what she knew he was capable of, that the bridge of the song was simply too important to accept mediocrity, and while all that was true, there was a part of cricket that simply wanted to see him snap. call her cruel, she wouldn't deny it. that was part of the whole reason she had such an aversion to allowing laurie to develop romantic feelings for her, knowing an embittered, spiteful woman like herself would only crush his spirit over time, and this was her way of saying "i told you so!". "fuck's sake, laurie..." she rubbed a hand over her face as she let out a sigh of exasperation, fishing out a cigarette from the pack she left discarded on the mixing board and lit up to soothe her irritation. "some of us got actual shit to do t'night besides holdin' y'er hand tryna' walk ya' through eight fuckin' bars... studio time ain't cheap, neither. that's fifty bucks outta the label's wallet and damn near an hour 'a my time wasted listenin' t' y'er damn caterwaulin'."

Are you serious for damns sake?

Yes, I am. It doesn't make sense to me that they would be smiling at the idea of hurting Varian...while not hurting Varian. It doesn't make sense that Andrew would be smiling at the thought of hurting Cassandra, while...not actually hurting her. It feels, to me, to be forced. The most genuine expressions I have seen is when he is looking at Cassandra when they're on the balloon and there is no one to be acting for.

She's not even looking at him. Why is he looking at her with such a soft expression, if he's plotting her demise?

Unfortunately, we don't get enough of him with just Varian when he's not stressing out about Rapunzel being on the loose to see how he looks when he's not forcing a facade. Although, if we're going to be using concept art for evidence, the art fight between Kay Ritter and Tom Caulfield has Varian and Andrew trying to one-up each other in a relatively harmless way very akin to two mad scientist bros fighting over the same girl. (The Art Fight is literally over K shipping Cassarian and T shipping Cassandrew.) And while they mess with each other a lot, they never actually hurt each other. (Until we get into Vamparian stuff, but that's an AU.)
