Books of 2025: GHOST OF THE NEON GOD by T. R. Napper.

This caught my eye while browsing idly at the bookstore, but I was Strong and told myself, "no, don't impulse buy that; check reviews and if it's still here next time you're physically in the shop you can MAYBE get it."

Well! The reviews were Intriguing, and the oversaturated bright cover was calling to me, and it was indeed still on the shelf when I went back in for indie bookstore day, so! I yoinked it posthaste, put it in the daisychain lineup, and read it in a day (novella, 112 pages).

It is, delightfully, a weird and funny and fucked up little book. Near future cyberpunk thriller set in Australia, featuring petty criminal Jack Nguyen who trips (literally) into Very Advanced Tech and finds himself on the run from hired killers and dirty cops and a government or two, trapped on a lethal road trip through the outback with a university student he scammed a ride from.

The Very Advanced Tech turns out to be exactly my catnip, and also a HUGE spoiler, but your honor I love Oondiri, and Sally, and Jack, and horrible Quinlan, and poor philosophizing Col. Very violent, but it also had me inflicting dialogue exchanges on my mother (who happened to be sitting nearby) and giggling to myself intermittently--all around a fun horrible time. Four stars!

If you have a favorite fictional AI, you should definitely check this out.

born in seattle washington, layla was the second of twins, following her sister by only 23 minutes. what had begun as a one-night-stand pregnancy, layla's mother and father did what they could to make sure that the twins spent time with both of their parents. at that moment at least, they had everything set out and planned.

it wasn't the white picket fence that their mother had perhaps dreamed of when she was growing up, but their family dynamic worked. layla and faith had everything they needed, but more importantly, they were brought up in the home of a mother that loved them, and a father who saw them as often as he could. it could have been worse.

as twins often are, layla and faith were incredibly close. they'd always shared a bedroom, and seldom had secrets between one another. they'd help each other with their homework, and in layla's idealistic mind, it was exactly what having a sister was meant to be like. it wasn't until they aged into their teenage years did the rifts start to show, and the cracks in the family foundation begin to stress.

at thirteen, a fight between the twin’s mother and father caused a rift - layla's father had been offered the chance to move to boston with his latest fling, and was intending to do so with the twins. their mother stepped in, told him that he couldn’t take two of his kids to the other end of the country. sitting on the stairs and listening to it all, layla kept her mouth shut, but faith did not.

this would become the first moment that layla can remember of her sister being braver, feistier, more bold than she could be. from her spot on the stairs she couldn't make out words, but she could hear the raised voices, shouting, and things clearly not going to plan. faith wouldn't ever tell her what was said, despite how much she asked. it was the first of a number of secrets that layla would come to learn had been kept from her.

as the headed into their high school years, layla watched from the sidelines as faith drifted further away from her. two girls who had once been inseparable, now not as close as they had been. teenage rebellion, her mother would call it in the quiet of the evenings when faith didn't return home for dinner. layla always feared it was more than that.

faith continued to follow down a path different from the younger twins. layla enrolled in nursing school, a calling that she'd heard since she was a young teen, while faith continued to be a free spirit, with far less direction. layla didn't mind, she was happy to support her sister as much as she could. so much so, that upon turning eighteen, complete with their matching twin tattoos, the girls moved out of their mother's home and away from the tension between faith and their mother, and started fresh.

perhaps too optimistically, layla thought that it might give faith some time to consider her life options. might give her the space to go back to school, or start a new career. instead, it was the opposite. faith went further into a world darker than the other would have considered it to be.

the rumbling of bikes became a noise that layla was familiar with. faith's new boyfriend, with the distinct devil tattoo on his arm, was becoming an ever increasing and imposing presence on the ferguson twins. their mother, too busy burying her head in the sand, refused to acknowledge any such concern for her daughters behaviour. and layla wasn't quite brave enough to question it. she didn't want to risk losing faith entirely.

that fear would become all too real, however. faith's diablo boyfriend would decide that they would be better off heading to where the club was founded, texas. layla spoke up this time, begging, pleading her sister not to go. at twenty four, they'd lived together for a number of years and she loved the life that they had been carving out between them. she cited every cliche pair of roommates she could in a bid to get her to say –– but faith couldn't be convinced. she was gone.

that was the last she'd ever hear from her sister. since the moment she'd walked out the door, it had been silence. panic set in almost immediately for layla. she was truly alone for the first time in as long as she'd been alive, the one person she'd always been able to count on had vanished into texas on the back of a motorcycle, and layla didn't know what she was meant to do.

she tried not to panic –– gave it a little bit of time before she started asking around, speaking to what had been some of their mutual friends. nothing. complete silence from faith ferguson.

days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and layla couldn't take it any more. she had to take matters into her own hands, as others failed to see the severity of the situation. she's moved with her boyfriend, she'll be fine. call it twin instinct, but layla couldn't shake the pit in her stomach that told her otherwise.

layla packed up her belongings, hired a moving van, and drove to texas. she recalled a couple of town names that had been mentioned at the time, and settled herself in stratford, now a woman on a mission. she had to find her sister.

she asked around, showed pictures, spent all of her free time digging at any clue that might have the smallest of chances of helping her find the truth. but it never came to fruition, and instead she was still without her sister.four years later, and the truth about faith ferguson is still unknown. it was as if her sister came to texas and vanished into thin air. there have been odd looks from those she has asked, clearly a much deeper truth that she has yet to uncover. she is determined, but that doesn't mean that she will be successful.

tldr: layla's twin sister faith moved to texas on the back of a bike belonging to a diablo. something went down, and faith got caught in the crossfire. whether it was accidentally or purposeful, it's unknown to layla at this point (and is certainly open to plotting!!). it's also unknown what happened to her body. layla doesn't know for certain about her death, but cannot shake the feeling that is what has happened, and is just wanting to know the truth.

Does it matter where they sleep?: 99% of the time she will be in her bedchamber, I headcanon that all of my Zeldas have the ability to fall asleep wherever necessary

OoT Zelda: She was in hiding for years and went under the guise of Sheik. You better believe she learned from a young age how to make accommodations anywhere. 

TP Zelda: I like to believe she travelled to other parts of the land (if nothing else, at least to Ordon with Link) after the events of TP. She may not have been comfortable, but she isn’t the type to complain. Sleeping outside of her bedchamber would be new/’unfamiliar’ to her though.

HW Zelda: She commands an army and also undergoes the guise of Sheik. I imagine she grew up preparing herself to sleep outside the castle, but when with her troops she probably has a (very nice) tent of her own with a cot. As Sheik, there was less pomp for obvious reasons.

Frequent dreams, nightmares?: Often experiences premonitions during her dreams, which can tend to be dark depending on what is happening across the land

What do they do if they cannot fall asleep?: Read a book by the fire, indulge in a warm perfumed bath, or take a stroll under the night sky to get some fresh air

Deep slumber or naps?: Deep slumber (she really isn’t a napper)

When do they wake up?: Unless ill or absolutely drained (or treating herself but lol when will she ever do that), the first morning light

When do they sleep?: After her royal duties have been completed or when an advisor, guardian (Impa), or partner forces her to bed
