in related news: i did NOT mean to write eight (8) pages from alces' pov, but here-we-fucken-are, i guess
(one of) my toxic writer trait(s) is that i TELL myself i can skip around and only write the good bits, especially when it's just for fun because Who Cares??, but then i Actually Get To A Place Where It'd Be Fine To Skip and i simply cannot do it, and this is how i keep accidentally turning short stories into short novels

Books of 2024: FUGITIVE TELEMETRY by Martha Wells.
Keeping the murder mystery/thriller train going after KILLING FLOOR! It is ALWAYS time for a Bot Reread, honestly, and I love that Bot could Annihilate Reacher.

Finished this! Held my interest, even though it had me eyerolling at the sexism (gee, glad we have this badass lady cop so she and Reacher can fuck practically DAILY for the week their lives overlap, great, because we'll DEFINITELY need her as a helpless hostage later) and the fatphobia (dude: come on). I did appreciate how Reacher was Very Wrong about a few load-bearing plot things, and how information was revealed over the course of the story. Quick read! Gave me interesting genre things to percolate on.
Books of 2024: KILLING FLOOR by Lee Child.
This isn't a genre I typically read; HOWEVER!: my dream agent was on an episode of the Writing Excuses podcast about beginnings, and they said this one is Very Good, so I borrowed my dad's paperback copy to give it a whirl.
I'm low-key hoping this will help me sort out some Genre Issues™ I suspect I'm having with a writing project, too, which is a nice added bonus! Excited to see how this goes.

Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex), family Balaenicipitidae, order Pelicaniformes, Uganda
This bird is the only member of its family.
The taxonomic affinities of this bird have long been debated. It currently rests within the order Pelicaniformes. It was, in the past, often placed in the Ciconiiformes (Storks).
Its closest living relative is most likely the Hamerkop.
