Small artists you need to understand that when you see an artist who you think has 'made it' tells you not to worry about the numbers and to not fret about getting more likes than reblogs they are not telling you it because they think you are stupid for caring or because they dont need to network to survive they are very likely telling you that because they have witnessed first hand the way the numbers game tears people to shreds in terms of mental health and motivation

As a pre-downpour fan, what are the major changes/differences you noticed between the fandom pre- and post- dp?
Really the only thing I would say is a notable 'change' is a shift in how most character-based fanworks is. Base game RW slugcats are pretty straightforward lil animals with small hints of personality, but nothing really strong. It's less a personality and more a vibe. The iterators aren't much different- the ways they interact with you and with each other is something sort of hard to dig into. A lot of people came away with just understanding moon and pebbles as "the nice one" and "the mean one" and the slugcats were very similar. People complain about infantalizing Pebbles now but god I'll take that over the villianization. Funny enough, if I had a nickle for every "Robot that was characterized as a complete asshole before getting a sequel that better explained their actions and issues and suddenly they were infantalized instead" I'd have at least two, which is fun. DP has a lot more direct character, even if you don't think its fitting. The slugcats are more distinct from each other and fit nicely into archetypes if you want them too, but there is still wiggle room for people to change it up without being 'wrong'. The iterators have more in-game content of or about how they interact with the world and each other, they have more personal relationships with certain slugcats, they have actual designs for more than Moon and Pebbles, etc. Its much easier to get a feel for the characters and that means content directly about them is more appealing. Not just shipping (although absolutely shipping, since pre-DP the characters you had actual interactions for were animals, or siblings, or you had like one blurry picture and an offhand reference. People still tried!) but anything about how they would play off each other or behave is just... easier to do. So you have more of that. The less vague things are, the more people actually pick up on it. A lot of vanilla RW asked you to dig into it yourself, which a ton of people simply aren't going to do- even people who LIKE the thing. DP has a very different vibe than vanilla RW, Its well done but if you dig into it you can see the ways it attaches onto the base game rather than seamlessly extends. And I think one of those ways is just that its much more broadly appealing storytelling. Other than that its just a bigger fandom with bigger fandom issues. Not anything unique to RW, just par for the course for fandoms to get bigger and suddenly things feel more disconnected or overwhelming or less friendly or that it feels like theres more drama. And these issues aren't absent from pre-DP RW, there was its fair share of drama in regards to people who were either assholes or predators. It never didn't have that problem because thats an unavoidable problem to have when you have a bunch of people who are strictly united by the fact they like the same thing.

I'll say that I have been in some fandom with extremely impressive and dedicated artists but consistently some of my favorite artists are ones who technically make 'unimpressive' art to outright loving posting 'low effort' doodles. I love skilled work thats beautiful, but I also deeply admire a freedom from perfectionism and ambition. Sometimes those are just non-complicated but still clearly skilled works, and sometimes thats loving the wobbly simplicity of crude lines vs. rendered beauty. One of my favorite artists back when I was big into Hollow Knight was a korean artist who could absolutely make some extremely beautiful stuff, but many of the pieces I remember most and loved the most looked like this

Even here I know I mentally worked harder to make this imitation than they did for the OG. I can't draw fast and loose, and I like work that is clearly faster and looser than I can do. I envy people who can do things imperfect and carefree. Sometimes thats still very obviously skilled work, sometimes its very stupid doodles that were blatantly done in 30 seconds in mspaint. I don't think its say, disrespectful to love the doodles more than the rendered stuff said artist makes- but my love for it comes from a place that a lot of people wouldn't guess. That is to say, its hard to tell who, why, or when something you make might click with people- and it doesn't take a masterwork for someone to see something in your art as inspiration.

I'll be honest if youre a strictly digital artist you should pick up some sort of physical hobby art. Stamp carving/needlefelting/etc. Maybe get a single carving knife and just start whittling twigs like some sort of cowboy. Having something more tactile to do with your hands can be a lot more relaxing and grounding than paper or screen art is in my experience its really good for nerves

Regarding Commissions
I mentioned the possibility of opening commissions for Artmonth styled pieces earlier last month, and this is just a quick notice saying I will likely being officially opening those up this Friday (or slightly later) depending on if I get everything in order Current plans is to open google form submissions and pick out a small starting set of submissions, probably around 5. These will be isolated to just the triangle/diamond style pieces from earlier this year, for a flat rate of around 85$ regardless of the overall complexity, with the intention that everything should ideally fit right into what I've done for 'official' prompts. For this first round, due to complications in life rn, they will be a bit more limited in scope just to make things a little easier for me to manage. If things work out, later runs will hopefully have more options (Such as larger hexagon options that allow for more environmental pieces).

Slugcats are genuinely overrated, post scav
If you want me to post art about other creatures, this is a surefire way to ensure that does not happen

Just outta curiosity, If I did "open ended prompt" commissions for something in the same vein as the RW month pieces, would people be interested? By open ended I mean less control over the posing/color/theming of the piece, similar to how artmonth has a prompt only as a single word (Although not THAT limited)

On Tumblr
I will not be moving. I'm fed up with AI but its a system that has poisoned every other site already, and poisoned the internet at large. Other than turning off the toggle and being mad that its happening again, I'm more than aware that my control over my work has already become increasingly flimsy on the internet landscape. Frankly, our data was scrapped through search engines long before tumblr asked for a cut of the pie just due to its public nature. So its hard to care that much by yet another site doing such, but its especially frustrating given how long tumblr did resist many of the temptations of data selling. Additionally, tumblr as a site handles content differently than others. A deleted blog's posts can still circle indefinitely due to the nature of how reblogs work. Deleting everything offers little protection, and moving anywhere else is just an additional ticking clock until similar happens, has already happened, or the sites are so new and flimsy that if you pay attention at all you can already see cracks ghosting along their design or operation. However it should be noted this frustrating move comes directly after another gross mishandling of privacy, site protections, and frankly a bafflingly public display of bigotry at the hand of the site CEO. It has been truly horrific that not only is this a consistent problem, but its one that comes at the tail end of a, frankly, much more upsetting action. I guess if I ask anything its to not let the existence of this new problem completely overwrite those events. Basically, I'm tired. More accurately I'm just fed up. AI scrapping is a problem I get very little say in, that's really the whole issue with its use of scraping as training method- the lack of say. I'm not a paying customer who can revoke support for a product, I'm just another individual experiencing the 'content' equivalent of a pickpocket. Glaze and nightshade are not fullproof solutions, nor do they 'poison' data sets in the way people might believe they do. Its an evolutionary arms race, but one with rollback and a billion different hydra heads. So yeah- I'll just grit and bare it and keep my money to myself. That said, for the people who truly want other options, I have other accounts on Twitter (Consistently used, although I talk and share less) and Bluesky. (Don't particularly like)
Sorry that the modern internet continues to suck!

Oh yea, just for clarity, the last few months of RW art month will not be spoilery. The prompt for 'watcher' might use elements from the teasers (i havent drawn it yet) but otherwise nothing new.
