Brief analysis of Map of the Soul: Persona

I have read no less than 3 articles reviewing persona that have managed to completely miss the reference to the Jungian persona and one which read like a slur campaign against boybands that I am gonna ignore for obvious reasons. I have also seen countless comments saying that bts have become shallow, that this comeback has no soul and no meaning, that it's just pandering to fans.

I think that's a little hasty.

To put it simply, in Jungian theory, the persona is a mask that you project at society, the public face that you show the world. Just being a boyband, bts already have a good connection to this and I was looking forward to seeing them expand on it. Honestly, I think bts hit this theorum rather well in their entire ep:

• Persona, now this you cant miss, the lyrics and the title obviously refer to the Jungian Persona. Its about struggling with your public face vs who you are in private, struggling with public opinion and how that affects your persona and self, and much more. How anyone could miss this is beyond me.

• BWL which sounds like a stereotypical love song by a boyband, which turns out to have a deeper meaning of finding love in simple ways, and an ode to army. But, if you think about it, a stereotypical boyband love song on an album that talks about the mask that people present to the public? Sounds like the very existance of this song is a reference to the mask that they wear in public.

• Mikrokosmos is about how people have their own light and their own agendas and how even in the darkness you can see the light in people. Admittedly, this is the vaguest link to Jungian theory on the whole album, but that is just my intial take away, further analysis needed.

• Make it right which is about getting caught up in the fame and glory and therefore losing what you love. Not being able to do things or go places because of the fame and the publicity. Not being able to be with who you want to be with because of public opinion and fame.

• Home referring blatantly to having wealth and status but feeling empty inside. Having everything and yet there is no substance to your life, nothing of meaning.

• Jamais Vu talks about the disconnect between the online self (they call it the "gamer") and real life, how things cant be fixed in reality like they can be online. This is particularly relevant in today's culture with people blurting out whatever they want online and then not seeing the real life consequences until its too late.

• Dionysus talks about living big and getting drunk and partying, becoming a huge star, becoming a new person but not being satisfied. How they have been cracked and broken, how their symbol has been shattered, how they have become something new but still aren't satisfied.

Like, really, this mini album is no less deep and introspective than their others and its hardly shallow. It rather nicely hits the Jungian theory of the persona and it sounds cohesive as a whole.

(Also its a great ep and i love it)
