I started reading the severance au and i love it a lot, i love your writing style, but ive never seen severance and i feel like maybe id enjoy a lot more if i actually had the reference so uhm if you have any suggestions of like moments i should look up or smth pls tell me 😓
otherwise it’s probably gonna be wikipedia fest for a small resume.
I’m really looking forward to understanding better tho, cause the way you write is sooo captivating and beautiful and like i really really really wanna be able to enjoy the fic to its actual worth 😔 even tho i still love it so far even in my sometimes confusion
in short, severance is about a corporation that offers a procedure that splits the consciousness of its employees using a chip in their brain. when they’re in the outside world, they resume life as normal as “outies”, with their memories up to that point. but when they’re at work, the chip switches them over to a different “innie” consciousness that only exists in a specific place. this other consciousness only remembers what happens to it when the chip is activated, and has none of the outside personality’s memories. they’re essentially “born” one day at their workplace and have to learn on the fly how to survive in that context and what’s expected of them.
in my fic, the place where the innies manifest is a subterranean floor underneath the bell center, complete with ice rink and other facilities (don’t think about the logistics too hard). so any time marty goes down the elevator to that level of the building, his consciousness goes dormant for a while and martin (i separate marty from his innie as a character by referring to him only by his full name) takes the wheel. martin does not know anything about marty and has no idea what his motivations are for severing himself. severed players have their outie’s names hidden from them, and go only by their jersey numbers. the only reason they let martin know his name and had him stop going by “26” is because he’s a coach now, and they need for him to have a status symbol over the player innies that he’s supposed to be directing. he’s the only innie with a name besides his jersey number. monty’s innie is named 35, doby’s is named 75, cole’s was 22 before it was changed to 13 without his consent, etc..

in this, the characters featured are innies. normally innies are tasked with waking up other innies using an new employee orientation book. the point is to ask them questions including “who are you?”, “name a US state”, “what are is the color of your mother’s eyes” to test that they really don’t remember who they are. because martin was already oriented as a player and this is not his first time waking up, his orientation was done by a lumon employee who skipped the vast majority of the contents when martin proved right off the bat that he did not remember anything other than his memories as an innie with Tampa Bay.

this scene illustrates how the chip turns off and on depending on where the person is located. when inside the severed floor, helly does not remember her memories of outside or why she’s there. when she enters the stairwell, she shifts into her outie, who has all of her usual memories. i show this at the end of the first scene, when 26/martin goes down the elevator screaming and banging his fists. by the time he gets to the top floor he’s marty st. louis again, and has no idea why he was just punching the doors hard enough to make himself bleed.

this scene illustrates how innies are punished by lumon for disobedience. they can’t be injured physically, because their outies can’t be asking questions about where bruises or scars came from, so they’re subjected to psychological torture. this scene also shows how the innies experience every day as a continual loop— the don’t have a clear delineation from day to day besides trips to the elevators, and because they’re at work during the day they never get the chance to sleep. the outies sleep for them. the outies are generally oblivious to how the innies are treated, and are told by lumon that they’re essentially a simple-minded version of themselves that doesn’t mind being forced to do their jobs for them all day. pro hockey players generally elect to sever because they think it’s the only way they’ll ever be allowed into the league— lumon target short guys, marginal talents, and dudes with mental health problems or injuries most heavily. they have a high incentive to not think too hard about what their innies might be going through.
the innies are basically the same people as their outies, but without memory to form an identity around. because of that there are some differences in personality. martin is more depressed than marty obviously, but also more weak-willed and submissive. he feels a lot of contempt with himself for that because it goes against his innate personality, which is to be tenacious, confident, and willful like marty is on the outside. a lot of the fic is going to be about the innies getting back in touch with the parts of themselves that have been suppressed.
sorry this is kind of long, i decided to use this as a springboard to make a primer of sorts for the fic for people who haven’t seen the show, i can see how it would be confusing otherwise lol

I have not been in this fandom long enough to reasonably judge others' takes however. "EPIC fans are so silly to characterize odysseus as feeling guilty for his actions don't you know he's a war criminal" is definitely a wild one. like first of all to each their own so settle down and let people enjoy things ok. and secondly making choices with a bad outcome, even knowingly and deliberately, does not exclude the possibility of feeling bad about it later. in fact it makes for a much more in depth character because then you get to explore what he does or doesn't feel guilt over, and why, and if that guilt ever edges into regret or not.
#and thirdly i actually find it fascinating the way EPIC had him take a very conscious role in the greying of his morality#it's interesting to me because from my point of view odysseus in the odyssey is almost a passive player in his own myth#and i enjoy taking that very active moral choice and applying it to some of his non EPIC actions#odysseus#epic the musical#uh what is the tag for the epic cycle#as far as I'm aware it's#tagamemnon#?#idk i just think that if you were to ask your character what they would do differently the answer should not be ''nothing lol''#that is either a character who needs wayy more development or a storyteller who needs wayy more practice#also. WAR CRIMES DIDN'T FUCKING EXIST IT WAS THE BRONZE AGE#regardless of how socially acceptable or not his actions may have been#none of those men on the plain of fucking troy was about to sit down and agree on what constituted a crime of war#like if achilles can get away with flaunting straight up deliberate corpse desecration#i don't think anyone gets to say a word against odysseus for being a sneaky underhanded bastard who doesn't fight fair#coming back an hour later to add yet another point. the point of the people with this take is ''haha dont you know hes a bad person''#which fine yes by modern moral standards he is and even by contemporary standards* some of the stuff he does is super yikes man#but that STILL does not preclude him from feeling guilt. 'bad people' can feel guilt#gonna go ahead and explain those quotes around 'bad person' btw um i do not believe in morality like that. no one is fully good or bad#i shant speak on THAT further unless someone asks though#*contemporary is an iffy word here i feel because the default is to call the time of the penning of the text contemporary#despite the events in the text taking place several centuries earlier.#in this particular case because i am speaking from a point of textual analysis i will use the former#however i think that the latter is also a useful reference point

Whoops hand slipped here’s some TADC character fanart. Apologies for the severe lack of Pomni in this one idk where she went off to…maybe she got lost on her way to find the exit. The lines are incredibly choppy & rushed, I know, but it was still fun art practice! I don’t draw these guys nearly enough anyways so this is a nice change of pace. Support indie animation :3

reading thru the The Final utsuro fight visuals with the vocabulary i gained while liveblogging gintama
[VD: the section of the fight that has gintoki and utsuro-in-takasugi's-body slide through reanimated flashbacks to past scenes of the series that cast them as past versions of themselves, shouyou, and takasugi]

the initial flashback is to their immediately previous silver soul fight - the casting of the conflict as unending, progressless, in utsuro's favor. have either of them appreciably changed since then? is anything different? what is initially an incomplete brief flash - with utsuro still inhabiting takasugi - solidifies when he regresses to his original body and begins to more effectively counter gintoki. utsuro remains on the right throughout.

direct cut from there pulled further back in time to gintoki's immediately previous fight with takasugi's body in shogun assassination - takasugi on the right, giving utsuro in his body the power of Unconscionable Violence (senseless, gleeful, and knowing you well enough to perpetrate it) (joelletwo tags on squeaky toy video, 2023, repeated endlessly every day since)

but it's mutual - gintoki also knows you well enough to turn the tables and get the upper hand back

conditions where it's all you can do to hold out against an enemy that represents something so big in your psyche,

which he knows about, since he's been that for you before. back in time again to the first (onscreen) takasugi confrontation, right before taking advantage of your precarious mental state to punch you out of the plotline (kraniumet tags on yamameta post addition, 2022)

but utsuro keeps a vice grip on control of the story, surfacing back into the present to stop and reverse his fall mid-air so he can stay anchored in the battle with gintoki,

meaning he remains vulnerable to the weaknesses of the body he's in, which only ever exists anymore in one memory - you're unable to move, only to witness. a third figure is introduced, who is more you than you here, while gintoki remains himself.
the you more you than you accepts death while you watch it approach with helpless despair and terror.
the collapse of utsuro back into the body he inhabits in present invites a re-examining of the series of flashbacks thus far - where the perspective of who controls the focal memory seems to flip from utsuro to gintoki back to utsuro here, does it? the farewell shins->festival transition is 1:1 substitutional, working out so that utsuro-as-takasugi winds back up on the right.
but it isn't utsuro borrowing a strength of his like Violence here - it's, just like in the execution, succumbing to one of his weaknesses. flipping between the two scenes, takasugi's derailing fear of gintoki as a figure becomes gintoki's of utsuro. there's a double elision of takasugi (missing from farewell shins due to his fight with gintoki) so that utsuro becomes both gintokis - making him both the one who looms large, and the one who is destabilized by.
gintoki signifies something huge to utsuro, after all.

he takes up the role he had back then, the one you assigned him from the start, because half of his time always exists in that one moment now as well.

the regression through history continues to child against unbeatable teacher, again the question of if either of you has grown since you met. gintoki becomes the underdog challenger on the right.

ok so. i was cleaning out my pictures folder today. and i happened to come across a sketch from 2021 that may or may not be related to the same concept as this. but like a. darker, edgier version. if you catch my drift.
but the thing is i do NOT see myself finishing it, seeing as it's already been nearly 4 years since i sketched it out and i'm still fighting the burnout demons from hell and all that. but it IS very silly to me and frankly very good timing for me to have found this sketch right now
so basically what i'm wondering is would any of y'all be interested in like a dtiys / open collab type of thing with underfell papyrus as shadow the hedgehog

i've admittedly already tweaked it a good bit & i'd probably clean it up a lil more just for clarity if i actually go through with this but for now i just wanna see if i can rope anyone else into being insane with me. its actually pretty fun messing with the design & proportions to try and fit the silhouette of a very cartoonish hedgehog and i'd love to see other ppl's takes on it
