Warning: this is not a warm and fuzzy story. The little boy was ten when he remembers a visit to his grandmama. She had made a wonderful dinner at her apartment. They had driven over an hour, and delicious smells and the warmth of a working kitchen greeted them through the doorway. Always homemade, her supper was a wonderful old world meal that, years later, he would look for but never find in even the best restaurants. After serving everyone, she kept puttering about the table and her little kitchen. The boy's father became annoyed with her hovering and told her to sit down. His anger seemed unjustified and just a little mean to the boy. His child's eye couldn't understand why his father had become so mad at grandmama. Now older and visiting his own mother, he found himself taking on his father's impatient role. He remembered her teaching him the rules of living: take care of self and things. She had been strong and steps ahead. Now to see her "breaking the rules" hurt. He wanted her to snap out of it, but time and aging are harsh and repetitive. "Mom how are you," he asks. Her answer is something about a TV show or a neighbor, recaps he's heard many many times. Reacting to his own briskness, he realizes he's become, and now knows, his father from the inside. About to correct her over some fact or memory she recounts, he remembers the look on his father's face that long ago night. It suddenly occurs to him that it is better to be kind than right.
