So, I rewatched episode 7 of House of the Dragon, and I noticed something and want to know if this was common knowledge that I must’ve missed or whether it’s like an extra detail:

So following the events of Aemond getting his eye cut, and when the kids are arguing about who’s fault it is, Jace mentions that Aemond called them bastards, which is something that Viserys questions Aemonds about after Rhaenyra pulls up the fact that it’s treason (and then looks directly to Alicent)

He asks Aemond something like “where did you hear this” or “who told you this” and there’s a brief moment where Aemond is quite and Alicent tries to make an excuse about him hearing it in the training yards from other boys as gossip.

Viserys asks him again, and asks him to tell him who said it. You can see Aemond look towards his mother for a brief second, and Viserys turns as well as does Rhaenyra and everyone is basically looking at Alicent. You can see Viserys get very mad, before Aemond turns back to him and tell him that it was Aegon. (“Me?”)

So when I watched this part the first time, I found it kind of funny how Aegon didn’t even remember. But after thinking about it I realised that Aegon probably wasn’t the one he heard it from so his confusion was genuine.

Aemond could see that just the mere glance in Alicents direction set Viserys off, and with the mention of treason, he deliberately lied to Viserys and blamed his brother instead because he knew if he told them it was Alicent, she could have been killed or punished for it. He was protecting his mom.

He blamed his brother because he knew Viserys wouldn’t do anything to his children, and he could use the excuse that he was drunk or just being a boy as Viserys had defended Rhaenyra’s kids when they gave Aemond the pig and basically said “it’s just boys playing a joke”. Also Aegon was the first born male so Aemond knew he was safe.

Anyways I just thought it was really sweet how Aemond was smart enough to realise what would happen and instead lied and blamed Aegon to protect his mother.

Even after he went up to her and hugged her. He is the most affectionate out of all of her children and it would be nice to actually see Alicent reciprocate every once in a while instead of always focusing on Haelena and Aegon.
