Sur une plate-forme commune avec les Peugeot 104 et Citroën LN/LNA, la Samba est une version allongée du coupé 104 dont la structure a néanmoins été considérablement modifiée. La gamme Samba est équipé du « moteur X » de la Française de Mécanique. La Samba est sortie fin 1981 en version LS et GL. En 1982, sont apparus le cabriolet dessiné et produit par Pininfarina puis la version Rallye. La production de la Samba a été arrêtée en 1986 lors de l'abandon de la marque Talbot : « Le Lion (Peugeot) a définitivement mangé l'Hirondelle (Simca) ».La Talbot Samba Rallye Groupe B était une automobile de compétition construite par Peugeot.Deux motoristes sont à l'origine du développement de ces ultimes évolutions. Ce sont Mathiot et Brozzi, ils obtiennent ces cylindrées en passant l'alésage moteur en 78,50 mm pour le 1440 et 80 mm pour le 1550. Ces motorisations étaient déjà présentes sur les Peugeot 104 Groupe 5 ainsi que sur la Citroën Visa 1 000 pistes. Mais pour cadrer avec la réglementation en rallye, il y avait obligation d'alourdir la petit Samba par lestage afin d'obtenir 750 kg qui correspondait à la classe 1 600 cm³.
