I feel like there are a lot of heavy things going on in the world right now. Maybe it’s always been that way? But just seems louder because we are living it right now and not studying it dispassionately in school as a part of history. It’s easy to feel like maybe the world is not so great. Maybe humans kind of suck a little. But I was reminded recently that while yes, bad things happen, are happening, will continue to happen, the world is still good. People are still good. There is beauty to be found, even in the darkest of places. I don’t want to miss the things of beauty. This piece is one I posted about a year ago, but I wanted to share it again. Because it reminds me of that feeling. The feeling of good and beauty and love. I drew it at a time I felt those things. So when I look at it, I feel those things again. A few years ago my oldest son and I discovered the best series of books ever. Lockwood and Co. by @jonathan.stroud . We had so much fun reading them, that when we finished I wanted to draw the characters. And...since I’ve been wanting to do some middle grade style book covers, I decided to keep going and turn it into a sample piece for my portfolio. I’m pretty pleased with out it turned out. When my oldest son was about 3 or 4 years old he let out a huge world weary sigh and said “Mommy, I don’t want to be king. I just don’t feel good about it.” I reassured him that he didn’t have to be king and he could let go of that worry. I don’t know what was happening in his imagination that made him so concerned about becoming a king, but that conversation has often made me reflect upon how often we, as humans, can create larger then life scenarios, that don’t really play out. We can frequently create imagined rolls for ourselves, and then feel overburdened by those same self created rolls.
