SUNDAY SIX (ish)

“No!” The vocorder in the dented and scarred Mandalorian helmet warped the child’s voice but the skinny arms folded across her chest left no doubt about her stance on the issue.

“This planet is different,” Talon explained again, calmly. “You’ll stand out too much in your helmet. But we got you a poncho, just like the ones all the other children will be wearing.”

“No,” Mara said again, stubbornly. “I don’t want to. It’s ugly.”

Behind her, Tapper snorted. “She’s got you there,” he pointed out. “It’s the color of mud and twice as sloppy, and we all know it.”

Talon glowered at him. “Thank you for that insight,” he said flatly. “Unfortunately, we don’t have a choice. This is about safety, which takes priority over fashion — despite your opinions.”

“But the helmet is safe!” His niece objected. The faceplate swiveled from him to Tapper and back. “How will I comm you if something happens?” Real concern crept into her voice. “Ponchos don’t have comms!”

“Nothing’s going to happen,” Tapper said quickly. Pushing off the doorframe, he plucked the helmet off Mara’s head and crouched beside Talon. “Is it?”

Talon could have slapped him. “Your mother will look out for you, Little Vulptex. And you’ll only be gone for two days. Then you’ll be right back here with us, and you can wear whatever you want again. My word of honor.” He pressed his right palm to his heart.

“What if the monster comes?” She whispered, eyes large and worried.

Inwardly, Talon cursed his sister and her delusions. Gods blight her for throwing herself into wild theories about reincarnation rather than seeing her daughter for the beautiful, brilliant little girl that she was.

“It’s a risk we have to take,” he said finally, his heart heavy. “But this is the last time, I promise you. After this, you’ll never have to go with your mother again.” After this, they’d have the final payment for the freighter they were going to name the Wild Karrde. Their little Mara would be safe and out of the reach of everyone who might want her.

“Here.” Reaching into his boot, Tapper tugged free a small, sheathed knife. With deliberate care, he fastened it to Mara’s belt, then grabbed the hated poncho and pulled it over her head. “There — can’t see it at all,” he announced approvingly. “You keep that on you, and if the monster shows up, you shove it into him as hard as you can and then you run, all right?”

Mara nodded, then flung herself into his arms. “Two days,” she mumbled against his shirt.

Two days, Talon thought, grimly. Surely they could all manage two more days.

Bonus tidbit:

Distantly, Talon was aware of Tapper swearing. Vicious, colorful words poured out of him in a string as he searched the alleyway, looking for anything they might have missed.

Staring at his sister’s lifeless body and the small, bloodstained knife a few feet away, Talon knew there would be nothing to find. The monster that stalked Mara’s dreams had made itself real in the narrow window of time where she’d been outside their protection.

I will find you, Little Vulptex, he vowed silently. If it takes the rest of my life, I will find you and I will make your monster pay in blood for every tear he’s made you shed.

This is Perri's little stuffed guardian, Tapper. She always made his feet do little tippy-taps whenever she played with him. He still does little tap dances whenever Perri is sad or scared to help cheer her up. He's a little goat/manticore buddy.

Charlie was a little concerned that he might be too scary as a plushie for a toddler, but Vaggie assured it was fine. Sure enough, Perri ADORED him, and even loved him more after Lucifer breathed life into him.

Here's a Tapper machine that'd be great for the Kama Arcade with a few additions:

Light Up Marquee

35" riser with matching artwork completing the side art and faux coin door and bronzed foot bar at the bottom (actually the height of the riser would depend on how tall the panel in front of the control panel here is.. I'd want to make this bar height in the control panel area)

bronzed miniature cup holders in the same style as the original..

Note: I'm actually surprised they don't offer a lit up marquee as standard with these and that I would have to modify that myself..

A guy on YouTube claims it'd be easy for me though.. haha
