reddit rarepair prompt > stormlight discord conversation > AU where after killing the king Moash goes to Mourn's Vault instead of giving himself over to Odium. Searches out Kaladin's ex. Finds her. It gets complicated. First:

Moash walked out of the palace unopposed the day he killed a king.

He stumbled a few times, parshman and human corpses littered the halls, and the light was strange and hard to come by, but no one actually stopped him. Or if they did, he killed them. He can't remember.

Everything between there and the tavern he was sitting in was a blur.

"I did it," he said hoarsely. "I actually did it."

No one said anything. He wasn't sure where the old owner, Jyn was. This was his grandfather's favorite place; he remembered coming here sometimes. Jyn gave him watered down yellow, but he put in a proper mug, like for a real man.

Their little secret, his grandfather would say.

He looked around. The place was empty. Right, he had to knock down the door to get in. Distantly, he could hear screaming. Fighting.

"I avenged them," he murmured to the dusty room.

"Come on, in and out—" Moash turned at the sound of voices, closer, coming from the wreckage of the door.

A man pushed his way in. "We grab a few bottles, so we have something to —"

The man stopped, catching sight of Moash in the dark and immediately reaching for his belt.

"What is it?" A voice said behind him. It was almost familiar.

"Someone here."

"Damnation."

"I did it," Moash said again, puffing out his chest. "Captain said I couldn't, but I did it. Sah's dead but…" His voice faltered, but he shook his head, clearing thoughts of marbled bodies. "I avenged them."

"Madman?"

"Obviously." "Reveler?" "Doesn't look like."

"Wait, wait — Moash? Is that you?"

Moash startled, squinting at the second man. "Mak?" Storms. A day for ghosts.

"Moash used to work the caravans with me," Mak whispered urgently. "He's strong, a man you want on your side when things get tricky."

Moash nodded. Yes. That was him. Strong. Someone you wanted on your side.

"You hiring, Mak?" Moash asked.

"Tell you what kid, help us get out of this city alive and we'll get you to the coast. Can't do better than that these days. "

"I'll want actual pay." But Moash was already standing as he spoke, hopping over the bar. "Especially if I'm helping you carry all this crem."

"We've got a contact near the border with Herdaz," Mak said quickly. "He'll pay us when we get there. Best we can do, times being what they are. How'd you end up here, Moash? I heard you went to the shattered plains for the last war, right?"

He didn't answer.

no bc to me tarah is one of the most important people to kaladins character arc from his past like what do you mean he barely thinks of her in twok yet he obviously still feels guilty about how the two of them parted ways???? what do you mean she only gets one chapter what do you MEAN she said “maybe one day you’ll learn how to be there for the living, not just for the dead”??? there’s something so special in a first love, in the ways that you know and understand each other, and then parting your separate ways. something so special about how tarah and moash both truly know kaladin and how kaladin so obviously loves them, but can’t let himself think about how things ended otherwise he’ll be overwhelmed by guilt. in a post tien world, only 2 people have been able to get kaladin to consider moving on and that’s tarah and moash. and tbh i don’t think sanderson did any of that on purpose i think he just gave kaladin an ex girlfriend to be more relatable to young male readers and to stop the gay allegations but she’s SOOOO important to me specifically. idk listen to above the chinese restaurant by laufey and think abt kal and tarah and get back to me

Happy Fanfic Friday!

I got to thinking about all the fun AUs in this fandom and ended up wanting to do two things: show off the creativity of Stormlight fanficcers, and encourage the authors by letting them know that we care about their work.

So here's a list of 10 unfinished AUs that I found particularly creative and fun. If you have fun reading them, please leave a comment for the author and let them know. Dance AU, High school AU Adolin and Kaladin go to different high schools, and their dance teams are paired together for an upcoming competition. Adolin is ready to put in the work, but Kaladin is having trouble committing, and he won't say why.

The City of Kings and Heroes by SorchaSolas Rated Teen, 5000 words. Superhero AU (Modern with Magic) Kaladin has wings and breaks the law, Shallan can actually shapeshift, and Sylphrena is a human who's just really blue.

Blood Money by Anonymous Rated Teen, 62,000 words. Kaladin/Moash. Cowboy AU Deputy Sheriff Kaladin tries to keep his head above water as his past starts to catch up with him, setting off a series of events that start to unravel the carefully curated history of the town, and baring Kaladin's complicated feelings about a man he lost.

Bridge Boy and Pretty Boy by JoysWordcraft Unrated, 2000 words. Kadolin. Veterinary clinic AU Kaladin was working just another normal shift at his vet clinic when a disheveled blond stranger rushed into his veterinary with a hurt golden retriever. 'Help me,' the stranger said, and Kaladin's peaceful life was no more.

Sunshine in your eyes by elsecaller_muu Rated Teen, 21,000 words. College AU Kaladin thinks it's fine to study constantly and never sleep. Then he meets Adolin, with his curly hair and crop tops and warm smiles, and his life is turned upside down.

Take Your Own Advice by coinshotmisting Rated Teen, 5000 words. Coffee shop AU An introductory look at the world of Kholin State University, and the backgrounds of Adolin, Kaladin, and Shallan as they each approach the same coffee shop. I love the little worldbuilding touches in this!

Soulmate Archive by RydiaAsuka Rated Teen, 30,000 words. Soulmate AU Injuries show up on the bodies of their soulmates. Adolin's life turns upside down when suddenly he gets slave brands, and his body looks like it's beaten every day.

“So,” Sigzil said to Kaladin, "have you given thought to where you’re going to house the married men of Bridge Four?"

Married men? Looking at Peet's expression as he leaned across the with the woman, it seemed that might not be far off. Kaladin hadn’t given thought to it. He should have. He knew that Rock was married—the Horneater had already sent letters to his family, though the Peaks were so far away, news had not yet returned. Teft had been married, but his wife was dead, as was much of his family.

Storms, lighteyes were annoying. Particularly when they fawned over one another. Their conversation continued, and Kaladin found it blatantly obvious how badly this woman wanted a relationship with Adolin.

This woman was different. Her movements were calculated. The way she laughed, the way she chose her words. She would giggle and blush, but her eyes were always discerning, always watching. She exemplified what made him sick about lighteyed culture.

“Nothings wrong.” Kaladin said softly. “I’m just tired of listening to those two.”

“Shallan and Adolin seem happy,” Syl said. “What’s wrong with that?”

“Nothing,” Kaladin said. “So long as I don’t have to listen to it.”

Kaladin wasn’t giving those two enough credit. They might ignore him but they weren’t actively mean to him. They were happy and pleasant. Why did that annoy him so?

WOR ch 68: Bridges

"Do you know anything about women, bridgeboy?" Adolin asked, looking over his shoulder and watching Shallan as the two of them crossed the bridge.

"Lighteyed women?" Kaladin asked. "Nothing. Thankfully.

“People think I know a lot about women," Adolin said. "The truth is, I know how to get them-how to make them laugh, how to make them interested. I don't know how to keep them." He hesitated. "I really want to keep this one."

"So... tell her that, maybe?" Kaladin said, thinking back to Tarah, and the mistakes he'd made.

“Do such things work on darkeyed women?”

“You’re asking the wrong man,” Kaladin said. “I haven’t had much time for women lately. I was too busy trying to avoid being killed.”

“You’d make a terrible bridgeman.”

“Too short?”

“Well, yes. And too female. I doubt you’d look good in the traditional short trousers and open vest. Or, rather, you’d probably look too good. It might be a little distracting for the other bridgemen.”

WOR ch 76: The Hidden Blade

She looked gorgeous. Kaladin was willing to admit it, if only to him-self. Brilliant red hair, ready smile. She said something clever, Kaladin could almost hear the words. He waited, hoping that she'd look toward him, meet his eyes across the short distance.

She didn't. She rode on, and Kaladin felt like an utter fool. A part of him wanted to hate Adolin for holding her attention, but he found that he couldn't. The truth was, he liked Adolin. And those two were good for one another. They fit.

Perhaps Kaladin could hate that.

Shalladin: 5/10 there was some slight potential in wor but like that ship has sailed works so much better platonically

Kadolin : 9/10 just the amount of emotion one bridgeboy gets me is just whoa and also adolin supports healthy coping mechanisms

Kalarin : 10/10 remain is just such a soft boi and needs kaladin almost as much as kaladin needs him

Syladin: 2/10 I used to ship this but its like just so fucking weird please just stop

Jasnadin: 0/10 she's a lesbian and hates his guts this is not a relationship that would ever happen

5) kaladin and tarah have a reunion where they clear the air and realize they have no romantic feelings for each other anymore :)
