Fossils of this genus of fish date as far back as 113 million years ago! No wonder either, as tarpons can live in fresh, salty and brackish water and handle waters of varying acidity and oxygen levels! The latter they can deal with due to their special swim bladders, which work as secondary respiratory organs.
The 5.5" Pick Pocket made it's saltwater debut and what a debut it was! Landed my first ever snook on one of my first casts with it that night. Then later on landed my first ever tarpon with it!
Turned some heads while doing it too! And not only fish! I did hook about 5 tarpon while I was down there but only got one to hand because hooking them is like trying to drive a needle into a brick.
Let any TARPON who meets my gaze learn the true meaning of fear; for I am the harbinger of death. The bane of creatures sub-aqueous, my rod is true and unwavering as I cast into the aquatic abyss. A man, scorned by this uncaring MINECRAFT Earth, finds solace in the sea. My only friend, the MENDING upon my hook. Wriggling, writhing, struggling to surmount the ENCHANTED pointlessness that permeates this barren world. I am alone. I am empty. And yet, I fish.
The product of tonight's stream. Link above will take you to the replay. Large saltwater gurglers, tarpon toads/redfish crabs. Freshwater gurglers, for both panfish an bass.
Had some great topwater action with #snook this weekend #fishing #chokoloskee. #Tarpon were hanged up in the river mouths hanged up on clobbering #mullet schools for a nature show worthy of National Geographic. https://www.instagram.com/p/CkGKIlMOu14/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
