New additions (you have noticed some of these in my last post ‘game 04’).
A unit of Tartaros Terminators with storm shield and power lance. The idea with this unit is to present my opponent an akward target. As i play Pride of the Legion, this unit is scoring. They have a 2+/3+(inv) armour save. Meaning they are hard to shift save of quantity of shots; initiative 5, to strike first; and strength 5 ap3 attacks, which are effective vs power armour. I plan to place a cheap hq unit with a power fist in the unit also to add a needed final thump. My previous game saw the warlord ‘solar marshal’ (which increased my ws by one jn the unit, which was nice).
Narratively i see this unit as a body guard, strike team (teleporting), tie up, or objective holding. They were fun to play and my opponent really struggled to deal with them.
Lastly, i have a dedicated chaplain model. I used an old space marine chaplain i found and carved off the skull icons from the aquilla. I swapped out the bolt pistol for a volkite charger (rules wise he still has a pistol..) and added a helmet decoration (i forget what this is called..). All in all i think this model will fit nicely. Now i need to figure out a look for a delegatus, and the pistoleer…

Kind of annoyed that in the Codex, Cataphractii Terminators don’t have access to more specialised weapons. Like, you can have a squad with lightning claws and a heavy flamer.
That’s it.
But you can give a 10 man squad of Tartaros Terminators a heavy flamer AND a reaper autocannon, with a sergeant with a volkite charger.

Hail, Noble Ultramarines!
The subject of this post is those vilest of traitors, the so-called “Lernaean” Terminator elite of the XXth Legion.
Ah, the Lernaean Terminators. Some of the nicest Legion-specific Terminators Forge World have produced to date. I’d even go so far as to say that only the Phoenix Guard, the DG-specific Terminators and the Justaerin match them in how good they look, and how well they fit their Legion.
Let’s start with comparing them to the basic Legion Terminator. They cost a bit more, and have similar rules, but come stock with a volkite charger, the Stubborn special rule and WS 5 – compared to a normal Terminator Squad armed with power weapons and volkite chargers, the Lernaeans are 15 points more expensive for the squad, but gain WS 5 – a very good bargain, to my mind. The greatest advantage the Legion Terminators have here is the fact that Lernaeans can’t take other basic power weapons than the axe they start with, which, combined with the limited upgrades available to the Lernaeans in the form of power fists and chainfists, means the Lernaeans will always strike at Initiative 1 – they are in other words arguably quite fragile for an expensive squad, with a normal Toughness of 4 and a single Wound each. Because of this, and their interesting ranged upgrades, I prefer to run them in large units.
I mentioned interesting ranged upgrades – for every 5 Lernaeans in the squad, 1 of them may exchange their volkite charger for a heavy flamer, a plasma blaster, or, and get this, a CONVERSION BEAMER. Yeah. The plasma blaster has better synergy with the volkite chargers than the other choices, but the CONVERSION BEAMER comes with the kit, looks cool and can occasionally make long-range snipes with a S10 AP1 small blast, so… Yeah.
Probably the most competitive build is a unit armed with power fists and plasma blasters, with the odd chainfist to deter Contemptors. Add a venom sphere harness if you want it, and field the squad with Alpharius and a Primus Medicae in terminator armour and stuff them in a upgraded Spartan to build the closest thing to a traditional Death Star the Unbroken Chain is capable of… But that isn’t the strength of this unit, or this Legion. None of the choices mentioned are the best, or even top tier when compared to, say, a Horus-star or Guilliman-star.
It’s worth noting that just about any Legion-specific Terminator unit (like Justaerin or Firedrakes) will mop the floor with these guys. For fun games, there are a couple of fixes I’d suggest. Feel free to mix and match: let their power axes strike at initiative, add a Wound, add an Attack, give them Deep Strike, let them re-roll 1s to hit in shooting and melee, or give them the flexibility of Tartaros armour while keeping Cataphractii saves.
The kit itself is fairly well detailed, though I noticed one or two of the hands have the infamous “looks like the fist is clenched around nothing”- look of recent FW kits. More irritatingly, you don’t get a heavy flamer, plasma blaster, any power fists or chainfists, or even a venom sphere harness. If you kitbash the set with an upgrade kit or the plastic Cataphractii set, you lose out on the sculpted scales on the armour. I don’t really think they’re worth the ruinous sum FW asks for them, but if your stance on the subject allows it (and without entering the debate in this post), you can periodically find them for what is, perhaps, given the nature of the kit and the general price-gouging in this hobby, a more reasonable price on eBay.
For the Emperor!
