it's from petz 4! an old 90's pet simulator toy thing, if you want to get it for yourself here's this for the full game + petzA (it's abandonware, so it's not going to flag your ISP. petzA is recommended patching for modern systems and has useful tools like instant growth, brain sliders, letting more than 2 petz out at once, etc. and it's included)

[Fic WIP] CALL SIGNS snippet

Some much-needed fluph after the last few chapters of backstory-angst.

This time I'm working from T.M.'s point of view.

“Sorry I had to steal your boyfriend away from you, Birdman, but I needed those magic hands of his.”

“Mmmmmhmmm. Far be it from me to hoard all that talent for myself.”

“You g-guys? I’m st-st-still in the room, you know.”

“As if I could ever forget, Short Stuff.”

All hell had broken loose, metaphorically speaking, at WRCI that week once the news of the Russian invasion of Ukraine crossed the AP wire service. Leroux Kaard had put out an all-hands alert to staffers that all DJs would need to learn how to record up-to-the-minute reports to play during their scheduled slots, to take some of the load off Kit Evslin, the station's News Director, and Kit's two assistants.

As Production Manager, T.M. tapped Spamton first to help her with the back end in the production studio, because of his previous experience with mixing boards. She did the one-on-one training with the rest of the staff, he took over making the cartridges with messages from the station’s advertising patrons. She didn’t know anyone else who, like her, would leave Prodo cleaner than when he found it.

Now it was Saturday night at Swatch's and Spamton's place. The other two had done tag-team cooking to make chicken and broccoli with alfredo sauce, T.M. had brought over some cocktail shrimp. The leftovers were already parceled out and packed in the fridge.

The three of them were currently squished together on the loveseat. Swatch had their arm around T.M. 's shoulders; Spamton sat in Swatch’s lap with his legs partially draped over her lap as well, his feet braced on the armrest.

T.M. leaned over Swatch’s chest to ruffle Spamton’s hair. She expected him to pull away with some kind of comment about “hands off the merchandise”, but instead Spamton gave her an exaggerated wink and rubbed the side of her hand with the side of his head like a cat demanding pets.

Well. That was unexpected. But she was glad to see him more cheerful than he’d been on Tuesday night.

Sweet Cap'n Cakes Headcanons: K_K

THE TRIOLOGY IS COMPLETE!

Not as new as Cap’n in terms of model, but definitely up there as being shiny and sleek! Besides only one nuisance of a glitch, they don’t have many issues with their system. However, it’s sometimes difficult to get their hands on any spare parts if they ever need any…

What’s that particularly nasty bug in particular? They have a noise sensitivity issue! Although they’re able to dial up and down their own volume so they can perform and play music as loud as the other two want, they can get distressed by loud and sudden sounds that they don’t have time to turn down.

Although they do their best in trying to help out with various tasks, it’s just so easy for them to lose focus and drift off into their own worlds! They have a tendency to daydream even in more attention-needing situations, something they feel a little self-conscious about even if the other two find it endearing.

True to their name, Cakes is quite the fan of baking! Whether it be cupcakes, pastries, or even the cd bagels that the trio sells, they can often be found making food for their partners when they’re not making music or doing other various activities!

Mediator of the band. Makes sure that the other two and their occasional stubbornness doesn’t get them into any trouble, and they make sure they don’t sign contracts with any form of shady bunch. (Didn’t trust Spamton when he came to the three.)

K_K enjoys more EDM-centered music, like Madeon and Porter Robinson as examples. Their playlists are a mish-mash of hundreds of different genres, with old 70’s music, a 2016 pop song, and some comforting ukulele playing back to back. To others there’s a feeling of whiplash, but not so much for Cakes!

Their writing style and the way that they talk is starkly different from each other. They write extremely formally with proper pronounciation, although with an occasional emoji, while they’re a lot more carefree in person!

They play an electric keyboard for the band, and on occasion will play those keyboard guitars (also called keytars!) for concerts! But their main instrument of choice when those aren’t available? Their voice! They’re the main vocalist for the band, and are usually the person you hear as the main melody of a Sweet Cap’n Cakes song. Also they play ukulele because yes.

While they’re not making a majority of the music they’re singing, a lot of melodies that are used for their songs are little tunes that they came up with on the spot that Sweet ended up writing down. They’re also in charge of choreography and dancing at concerts and for music videos! 

They dance as a stim!

They usually have a wide variety of tiny activities they do in order to keep their hands busy, one of which being origami! Sometimes Sweet and Cap’n will find paper gifts left for them on their desks.

Usually works on more of the small details when it comes to scrapwork, and doesn’t like working on huge parts of a project all at once.

Their arms may not be the strongest in the world, but that’s because they’re strechy! Being able to reach out far, being able to make them do cool loops, and still being strong enough to pick up their tiny bandmates! (Cuddling them like plushies,,,)

Their love language is physical affection! Whether it be surprise kisses on the cheek, to sleepily wrapping their arms around a bandmate with a gentle squeeze, how could they resist letting them know how much they cared with a smooch?

Although their head is mostly in the clouds, they tend to get a little self conscious about various aspects of themselves, sometimes worrying if they’re strong enough to be able to protect the people that they care about. Are they too carefree? Why can’t they focus more? Nevertheless, the other two are always there to reassure a nervous Cakes.

Although they’re extremely eager in helping out the rebellion, sometimes they visit Tasque Manager in the palace to help babysit the Tasques.

very particular about the music she listens to and isnt comfortable listening to other artists/bands outside the ones she already does unless its a friend choosing the music, she's chill with that and doesnt mind listening to her friends music taste if theyre already playing something

the only one out of the three that gets irritated by country music. not just doesnt like it its grating, like nails on a chalkboard to her will insist the music gets changed asap

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?*

Deltarune: Swatch/Spamton, I mean I kinda understand the appeal with how their relationship is in canon why people would ship them, but the fandom has really turned their relationship into something so drastically different in the lens of romance that it almost boggles me. Swatch always feels so ooc for me in most things I see shipping him and Spamton, and it's rare that I find something depicting the animosity the two canonically have for each other in a shipping piece. I'll still reblog stuff of them that I find artistically appealing but tbh I do not understand the fanonical appeal

Trauma Center: Lloyd Wilkens/Luc Rousseu. Wilksseu must have been conjured up as the most insufferable pairing imaginable because that's the only way I can explain its existence. It makes so little sense but at the same time I feel like I completely understand it. I think it's brilliant and hilarious though so I actually still ship it as a crackship LOL, nasty old doctor men in love get a thumbs up from me I guess

5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?*

Deltarune: Probably Swatch/Spamton again, for the reasons above. I wouldn't say "ruined" because I never shipped it to start with (I prefer Swatch/Tasque Manager and Spamton/nobody in canon) but I prefer them to have a hate-love, forbidden romance in rivalry kinda deal if I were to ship them

Trauma Center: Actually no! The only thing I can say is that I do like multishipping so while Angie/Derek is still my favorite pairing for either of them, it'd be interesting if more people were open to shipping either of them with other characters, just to see how the dynamics play out. Like Adel/Derek, for example, I think that's really underrated and intriguing

I also once saw Naomi/Derek and idk if I really ship it but it's certainly interesting, those two interact all the time in second opinion yet I rarely see stuff of them interacting in fandom, and I wish there was at least a bigger brotp thing going on with them in fandom since they seem pretty close (especially in trauma team with Naomi's backstory expanded upon, like Derek consulted on Naomi's diagnosis and operation, and in second opinion Naomi literally operated on Derek, they're ride-or-die buddies in my mind so hard)

13. Unpopular opinion about XXX character?

Deltarune: Two things. First, idk if this counts for this question but I don't like the popular headcanon that Spamton and the addisons are brothers/siblings. I do like estranged family dynamics, but I think the main reason people think they're related is that they look alike. I just think they're the same species(?), so in this case I think that having them just be coworkers/friends is much more interesting, compelling, and canonically supported.

Also, I do like Berdly...he is not the most egregious example of this trope (looks nervously at my other fandoms) but I just LOVE nasty bully-type kid characters, especially if they're being that mean to compensate for something really bad that happened to them. His backstory really struck a chord with me, and besides he's not even that mean or even evil, he's just pretty stuck up and annoying. He's definitely not the nastiest character I have "this is my son" feelings towards but I see a lot of people absolutely DESPISING him...por quoi.....

Trauma Center: ADEL TULBA HAS POTENTIAL!! I like what they did with his storyline in canon but my god could it have been expanded upon a la Naomi's story in second opinion. Like I think they should have built him up more as a secondary character with playable missions as him, especially during his time at the hands of asclepius (like Naomi's delphi missions), it would have made him such a stronger character.

And trauma center LOVES to copy their own work across different games when it comes to storylines/specific operations so literally I would not have minded at all if they gave him the Naomi treatment from the start. I'm playing utk2 for the first time rn (as opposed to just watching playthroughs lol) and I'm just like. Where is Adel. Where is he, he's been awol for like two whole chapters!

Still love Adel to bits though. I think that liking him is an unpopular opinion too, I mean I don't think anyone hates him per say, but I'm not sure anyone particularly likes him either, and I think part of that is because the storyline could have made him more interesting

she used to manage tasques in the big mansion but when spamboss took over he kicked the old staff out and now his tasques have rabies and bite people

so. her and swatch('s equivalent) went on their separate ways and she decided to chase her dreams and become an actress!!!!! but she has to start small and make her way in the tv business. through the years she ended up hosting a talk show and she liked doing that so she gave up on acting and just. hosted talk shows. she likes watching celebrities fight in front of a live audience and asking them questions to make them fight harder. her business name is t'asquer (asker...... its not a very creative name) and she plays a very important role in quinn's evil plan..

remember spamboss's autobiography??? yeah she interviewed jesting about it and since he knew spamboss would never let it go on actual television he just said everything that came to his mind, he read through the whole thing in a talk show studio and interrupted his reading every five minutes to disprove everything that was written in the book, including the fact that he's not actually hardware...

there is only one tape of this particular talkshow epicsode (because it's epic) and it's eight hours long and t'asquer gets increasingly more bored throughout it and it ended up in quinn's hands.......

now, she already knew spamboss wasn't hardware cause the addisons literally grew up with him and yeah he's. very much not. but this tape has EVIDENCE FROM A TRUSTED THIRD PARTY!!!!! and more incriminating things about that evil evil man (like how there was a court case over who would get custody over jolly and he just didn't fucking show up) so it's like her prized possession. she keeps it inside her head (thanks to the bite of '97 she has some extra space) and she makes susie watch all of it. eight hours of jesting screaming at a camera. very plot relevant

also quinn was a regular guest on t'asquer's shows and they were basically friends (or maybe more... wink wink) until nineteen ninety seven 👌

Deltarune Halloween Prompts Day 28: Something's in the dumpster, and it's not Spamton...

In their haste to join the dark princes in their Halloween festivities, Kris and Susie had accidentally left a couple of things behind at the dumpster behind the bakery. Or, had left the knife and pair of mismatched tinted glasses behind on purpose, giving the two the night off. It was difficult to tell which.

Reforming himself, Jevil giggled and stretched, jumping around just to hear the bells on his hat ring.

"CAN YOU [pipe down for a minute young man]? I'VE GOT A [Extra-Strength] P1L3 OF [migraine]" Quickly, Spamton reformed himself as well before he got stepped on, clutching his head and glaring as he saw his old "friend." "AND IT'S GOT YOUR [username and password] ON IT."

"SORRY, SORRY, IT LOOKS LIKE WE'RE STUCK TOGETHER FOR THE LONG HAUL, PUPPET BOY!" He looked around at the town, finally able to take it in with his eyes rather than from the lizard Lighter's belt, as opposed to Spamton who'd had a much better view from atop the goat boy's head.

"IT'S NOT QUITE [Tropical getaway] YOU KNOW."

"IT'S EVEN BETTER! ALL THESE PEOPLE, OUT AND ABOUT, PLAYING THEIR GAMES, GAMES! WHAT A FUN LITTLE PRISON THEY'VE MADE!"

"EVERYWHERE S [PAIN AND SEIZURE] WITH YOU [Good buddy]," Spamton groaned, finally noticing the dumpster nearby, a little touch of home in that big unfamiliar Dark World. "NOW IF YOU' [Excuuuuuse me, Princess!], I GOT A [hot date] WITH [Destiny]."

"LOOKS LIKE WHERE YOU BELONG, UEE HEE HEE!"

"[Fuck you] CLOWN." But before Spamton could approach a gentle rustling caught his attention, at first from some trash settling but then from something more, that made him jump, right into Jevil's waiting arms. Looking up at that toothy yellow smile he yelped, slapping it away. "I DON'T NEED YOUR [pity]!!!"

"PITY, PITY, YOU SAY? WHAT IF IT WAS INSTEAD..." Jevil dropped him unceremoniously, skipping towards the mystery dumpster creature while Spamton relocated his glasses. Summoning a swarm of spades, he knocked it over, pulling out bags to reveal...a Maus nest, and a bunch of web crawlers. "HEE HEE! A FAMILY REUNION?"

Jevil didn't know how right he was, as Spamton gasped, holding out his hand to one of the digital insects. "[Willy Daze here for Toxi-Clean!!]??! IS IT REALLY [You]??"

"WHAT."

Snatching the computer bug before it could scuttle away, Spamton nuzzled it with his cheek, getting a nasty sting for it but recovering quickly. He held it out to Jevil, who stared, thoroughly confused. "YOU SHOULD [Meet-and-Greet] MY REAL [my BFF]!!"

Jevil stared for a few moments, smiled, and then chomped down on Spamton's hand.

"OW YOU YOU YOU!!" He pulled his hand back, clutching it in pain, and growled. "NOW [Spit it out]!"

Jevil did so, expertly hitting Spamton in the face with the dead bug, which he wiped off in disgust as the clown just laughed wickedly.

"NOW THAT'S GOING [a step too far] MISTER [Six-piece Chicken McNobody]! [Why I oughta] BRING THIS UP TO YOUR MANAGER!"

"MANAGER? MANAGER? LIKE THE HER OVER THERE?" He pointed to Tasque Manager, making her way down the street dressed as a lion tamer with all her lion-maned Tasques in tow, and laughed even harder.

The trick-or-treaters were still out in full swing, and two more interrupted them, a tall CD player excitedly skating around in monster makeup and bolts glued to their neck, followed closely by a speaker in full werewolf getup, who held out his bag to Jevil and Spamton, apparently mistaking them for part of the crowd. "Trick or treat, guys!"

"TRICK OR...?" Spamton just looked at the robots, confused, wondering where he'd seen them before, but without missing a beat Jevil picked up the dead bug off the ground and stuffed it into Sweet's candy bag, getting an uncomfortable look for it as K_K preemptively hid their own bag behind their back.

"Um...thanks?" They ran into the bakery instead for better treats, while Jevil's laughter hit a fever pitch, the clown even rolling over onto his side on the ground, wiping tears from his eyes.

"AS MUCH FUN AS THIS HAS BEEN, I THINK IT'S TIME I FOLD. HALLOWEEN FOR ME WAS NEVER SO NICE, EVEN WITH THE CHANCE TO TRICK ONCE OR TWICE." He climbed into the dumpster, tossing out more trash to make room. "HAVE FUN IN YOUR CAGE, CAGE, CLIPPED-WING PUPPET, I'M OUTTA HERE!"

Still steaming over getting his hand bit and his best friend murdered and given to some trick-or-treater as candy, Spamton tried to follow him, drag him back out and keep him from escaping, but he was a little too late. The clown had already left the circus, no longer responding to his touch or his shouting, lost in his own mind, "FREE" in his own words, to the reality around him if nothing else. Sighing, Spamton just let him stay in his dumpster, heading out into town to see what else he could find.

He snatched the last of Jigsaw Joe's candy bars without so much as a "Trick-or-treat," and then, glancing up the street, finally saw another familiar face, or rather, beak. Swatch was at that moment handing out the last of their macarons and returning to the cafe, which seemed oddly active for a late Halloween night. "SO, [Easel]'S GOT A LITTLE [swingin' shindig] OF HIS OWN GOING."

Against Spamton's better judgement, he stepped through the door after the Swatchling, hoping to at least get a few laughs out of the old bird throwing him out on his ass yet again. But, to his shock, it wasn't just Swatch in attendance -- a whole crowd of Addison partygoers suddenly turned to watch him, astonished looks visible even behind their masks.

A memory surfaced, of the Halloween parties of his youth, of all his family and friends and colleagues and customers all packed into the Cyber Grill, and the invitations he'd received even long after he stopped coming. He hadn't gotten one recently, certainly not this year, much less had the chance to RSVP.

"UH...SORRY [Invitation not found] SO I'LL JUST BE GOING NOW," he sheepishly called out, but a couple of Addisons, one pink and one yellow, stood, gripping his hands to stop him.

"Spamton, it's fine! You're always invited to our parties!" With that, the crowd cheered, even a few younger Addison's who'd never met Spamton and had no clue what was happening. He smiled, as his brothers made space for him at their table, and ordered him a glass of battery acid from a reluctant, but begrudgingly cordial, Swatch.

Cats are weird in deltarune

Cat-like characters seems to be associated with possibly the occult and devil motif in deltarune:

The Devil Motif

Secret bosses seems to have a devil motif so far from Jevil as Joker + Devil and Spamton’s thing of offering deals

Tasque Manager knows who Jevil is and has connections to Spamton

Seam is a friend to Jevil and they’re the go to the person in regards to shadow crystals

Catti is friends with Noelle who has an angel motif and Kris who has a slight devil motif

Element 6 is Cat and the number 6 repeated three times is 666 aka the number of hell beast

6 is the number commonly associated with the certain man who speaks in hands and secret bosses has connection with that man

Element Cat might be element order and I’ve once theorized how demonic motif characters are actually more aligned with order/law in deltarune

Side note joke: Toby uses annoying dog as his avatar in games and how god in backwards is dog so does that makes cats as the demonic counterpart then lol? 

The Occult

Seam is a court magician meaning they may be capable of magic and how Jevil is the only one that can keep up with them suggesting that they’re stronger than they seem to be

There’s an unused item called Pure Crystal with description of “The shadow purified by a cat” that may hint Seam might be able to purify the shadow crystal(s) with their power

Catti is the only other character who mentions about magic in the light world besides Noelle and how she’s been dabbling in spells from her practicing stuff in the occult

She, Noelle, and Kris have practiced around in occult before in the past since she makes mention of their activities together and how one of Kris’s acts for the pop up enemy is “demon summoning classes for teens”

OK, let’s talk about Deltarune Chapter 2. Right off the bat two things:

Toby Fox could have been charging 20 USD for this or asked people to pre-purchase the remaining chapters to play Chapter 2, and I’m frankly very surprised (if delighted) that he didn’t.

Soundtrack’s bopping. If you don’t feel like playing two free chapters of a game, which by themselves will give you nine hours of a brilliant time in an absolutely insane world filled with mad characters that all still manages to hold together somehow, I can still recommend giving the OST a listen and then a buy if you are so inclined.

And with that and the spoiler-free lead image out of the way, let’s actually (largely incoherently) talk about Deltarune Chapter 2 below the Read More line. Spoilers galore, including for a bonus enemy ...

OK, so this guy is still a card:

But some non-positive observations to begin with: the Castle Town is nice to look at but maybe a bit uninteresting for the moment, since it’s a completely separate Dark World from the main underworld of Chapter 2. It seems perhaps like a decent hub world for people who haven’t replayed the previous chapter and need some refreshers, especially with the dojo challenges. But some of the other mechanics associated with the Castle Town like recruiting, fusing items, and so forth are as yet unclear. But perhaps it hints at more interaction between chapters through the Castle Town.

And that’s all the non-positive observations I have about Deltarune Chapter 2. It’s not even a negative observation, just taking note of potential seeds being planted for the remainder of the game.

Now. Now now now now now.

I don’t know how Toby Fox manages to continue coming up with such a diverse array of antagonists all so ridiculous and insane in their own special way, but he continues to outdo himself. And not only is Queen insane but so is literally everything that happens in Cyber City and then in Queen’s Mansion, like the layers of truces across Queen and her quasi-willing peons:

But the madcap side of things doesn’t mean there isn’t real attention to fleshing out everything introduced in Chapter 1, in tandem on both the narrative side and the gameplay side. As far as the latter, we can (finally) get party members other than Kris to undertake at least basic standard non-magical actions on their own that don’t cost Tension Points, which is very much welcome. But at the same time managing TP well is even more important than before. A lot of careful grazing makes certain fights a great deal easier, in a way that I didn’t really notice for most of Chapter 1 (with the possible exception of Jevil, who I still haven’t successfully pacified). The attacks are correspondingly far denser and often don’t leave too much margin for error, but as someone with minimal hand-eye coordination I still had a reasonable time completing Chapter 2.

Well, except for one particular enemy.

Spamton NEO is an interesting enemy, arguably more so than Jevil, and I’m not just saying that because I managed to spare Spamton but still haven’t had any success with Jevil. For one, finding the pieces of the key for Jevil’s cell is straightforward, whereas finding the Empty Disk for Spamton is itself a nightmarish dodge-fest. But more importantly, you actively have to seek Jevil out in Chapter 1, whereas your first encounter with Spamton is actually mandatory as part of the main story and then you optionally follow up on Spamton’s lead later to be able to face off against his NEO form.

Perhaps relevant to the forced nature of Spamton’s introduction is his relevance to Deltarune as a whole despite his bonus boss status. Compared to Jevil’s dialogue, Spamton’s babblings seem far more directly tied to the central themes of Deltarune around choice or agency, or rather a lack thereof (in stark contrast to Undertale’s general ethos). Jevil mostly just wants to wreak mischief and chaos; Spamton is fuelled by a need for freedom, to no longer be a puppet of ... something. And facing him in this way obviously clearly affects Kris, whose own free will is in real question ...

Oh yes, it seems now we’re really getting into the real core of Deltarune’s story, with all of the lore about the Roaring and more talk of the Knight leading up to this ending. But are Kris and the Knight one and the same? Or is Kris a puppet of the Knight? Or ... is it even the other way around? (No idea if that makes any sense but it sounds like a cool thing to throw out there.)

And another thing: this staticky smile ...

I would guess that’s Chapter 3′s boss once we actually go through this new Dark World, but why does this static remind me of the static you see behind Spamton’s glasses in some of his creepier shop dialogue? Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but there’s certainly an embarrassment of riches to over-analyse, even around Chapter 2′s bonus boss.

And I haven’t even talked about every other character being amazing. Susie of course continues to undergo really positive development, but Noelle seems to get the bulk of the attention honestly—we not only get her to finally interact with Susie, but we also learn more about her past as well her family, both about her lost sister (strongly implied to be named December) and her mother. The latter we get not only through more dialogue with her father Rudy but also in an implicit sense through her interactions with Queen, which may well mirror her fractious relationship with an overbearing mother.

Ralsei’s characterisation doesn’t try to expand as much, instead continuing to detail what’s already been planted throughout Chapter 1—his rule of the Castle Town, his awareness of the danger posed by the potential dark/light imbalance, and so forth—but nothing quite as revelatory as with Noelle. It doesn’t mean I can’t try my best to ship Kris with Ralsei though ...

Anyway, fluffy boys and mean girls aside, it’s also nice to see characters like Berdly—who seemed like a completely incidental one-note gag character in Chapter 1—get fleshed out with reasonably compelling (although obviously insane) motivation and backstory, and one wonders which other characters may get this sort of treatment in future.

Speaking of other characters as well, how cute and/or cool are all of the new enemies and enemy-adjacent characters???

Part of me suspects Tasque Manager in particular is actually carefully engineered to break the Internet. But my favourite is Swatch, who gives off weirdly Tuxedo Mask-esque vibes to me:

And an additional bit of speculation: I strongly suspect we’ll see some persistent things across the chapters that aren’t necessarily linear in progression. When I brought Spamton’s shadow crystal to Seam, they basically chided me for not having Jevil’s crystal (for god’s sake Seam it’s not for lack of trying), but then said this:

Is it possible that the game’s keeping track of certain global things outside of any of your individual saves, and some of these certain global things might not just have to do with optional bonuses ... ? Is it possible that some of these certain global things may enable cross-chapter nonlinear gameplay to accompany all of the other Castle Town mechanics introduced in Chapter 2?

Or do I just not want to replay all of Chapter 2 if I manage to pacify Jevil?

Time will tell. How much time?

Only time will tell on that front too, I guess.

Overall: Chapter 2 of Deltarune is another spectacular episode in Toby Fox fleshing out this unbelievable yet somehow credible world in his madcap way, and you can bet I will be watching for future chapters with great interest.
