Red Fungi Friends
Firstly, to get a sense of scale, at left below is the tip of my finger! There’s been plenty of rain at the start of summer here, which has also brought on some fungi. I spotted this lovely group of little red ones on my return home from orchid hunting. My shot was photobombed by bugs! below is the focus stacked image, remarkably both the bugs eyes are in focus! Below is a cropped version of…

Super small
Ok, I can’t hold it in! Rare second post for the day.Just edited an exciting tiny find from today, a sneak peek at a 2-3 mm purple orchid I found almost buried in leaf litter. I can’t believe I saw it! This is a single edited RAW image, more to come in a future post! Olympus OM1, M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm F2.8 Macro lens.Edited in DxO Photolab 7, final level adjustments and cropping in Adobe CS6…

Nodding Greenhood
Another Greenhood Orchid, this one was found by another photographer I chat to and we swapped some locations. I photographed it last week. The insect in the shot below gives some sense of scale, these orchids aren’t very big and can be hard to spot! While I do spend time editing my images, I generally try to keep them looking fairly natural and as I saw them to a large degree. With these ones,…

Weeds - nuts on The Nut
Unfortunately everything is not quite peachy on top of The Nut at Stanley. You would think this isolated plateau peninsula would be relatively protected from invasive species, but gorse and hemlock have over-run about a third of the area each! Prickly Gorse above is quite prolific and spread in patches over most of the agricultural/rural areas of Tasmania, despite many failed campaigns over the…

Stream-side stroll
Yet another lovely little rainforest walk in Tasmania’s Tarkine area, this time along the banks of the Julius River, featuring ferns, fungi and little furry thing … And speaking of small furry animals … have you ever heard “Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict…”?My all-time favourite band ever is easily Pink Floyd, particularly their earlier…

Lake Chisholm walk
This was by far my favourite walk in the Tarkine, not so much the destination – “one of the finest examples of a flooded sinkhole in Australia” – but the amazing track under a mixed enchanted forest of giant eucalypts and rainforest species with a carpet of waterferns.

First Forest Foray
I think the sign at Sumac Lookout said it was a 10 or 15 minute walk, but it was just a short 50m stroll from the road. A lovely leg stretch and our first taste of the Tarkine rainforest before heading back to our farm lodgings on the first day. And this week’s driving music, another for me unheard of 1970’s band called “Audience”, suggested to me by Ghosty – a fellow van driver. They released…

Hooded Lapwings
Commonly referred to as Plovers, I took and edited these in September last year. I was lucky enough to find a breeding pair only meters from a carpark on the Domain where I could easily and safely get nice close shots. Plovers will dive bomb to protect their turf and as you will see, have some serious weapons. They remained unpublished as there was more photos in the series to edit .. And in…

Perfect blue parasols
Faeries left their little parasols out after the rain! I found this intimate group of three lovely Mycena interrupta just off a fire trial not far from my home after a few days of rain. Of all the photos I’ve taken, these are my favourite fungi shots of all time, one in particular. The “in front of the scene” shot above, was taken with my phone, immediately after the image below was captured,…

Around the block
A few from close to home, I am so lucky to live here, just 7km from the Hobart GPO. The images here and in the previous post are almost unedited jpegs from the PEN-F, except for minor level adjustments. It’s great to be able to easily and quickly manipulate the image in camera and save a heap of time on the PC! Still playing and learning, the OM-1 keeps getting left at home!

Beach monster emerges
In the previous post, we left Ralph the Labradoodle looking very unsure of himself with his first beach swim… He was pretty eager to get back onto dry land again after being almost covered by a wave! He emerged not looking quite so cute and cuddly, but still has a big grin on his face after escaping the water! Look out dogs, there’s a freak off the leash!! Hey dude, I think your face just…

Ralph beach run
We took Ralph – “the boy in a dog suit”, to Kingston Beach for his second off lead run! I took the OM-1 for a walk too with the weather-sealed Oly 14-150mm F4.0-5.6 II lens, so I didn’t have to worry about sand and water. Little Ralph, a Labradoodle, is about 15 months old now, but his recall and attention span aren’t the best. He’s easily distracted, much like me! I haven’t posted in a while as…

Orchid Spider
Next visit to the bearded orchid threesome, a spider was visiting. It was shy to start with, but eventually came around. This last image is stacked and it moved – and moved the orchid! Life’s been hectic and it’s late! Time for bed. One last pic, a fern sprouting. Take care and thanks for visiting 😀

Orchid Patch
These photos are much sharper than those in the last post. More time and less wind makes a big difference! Some morning shots at the Maroon-Hood Orchid patch. There are three species of orchid in one small area about 12 feet square. Two of them are quite similar, but this small one has one thin grass like leaf. And the Maroon-Hood has two or three flatter roundish leaves Like this one that was…

Maroon Hood patch
It’s interesting when I visit how this orchid has changed, another day in it’s life … One of the other orchids with similar leaves nearby has opened too … The next day, this one was looking a little happier … Some of the other buds I found in the same area … It was a bit windy and they kept moving, I waited for it to drop but the camera has a little trouble lining the focus stack up. And a…
