USA please listen to me: the price of “teaching them a lesson” is too high. take it from New Zealand, who voted our Labour government out in the last election because they weren’t doing exactly what we wanted and got facism instead.
Trans rights are being attacked, public transport has been defunded, tax cuts issued for the wealthy, they've mass-defunded public services, cut and attacked the disability funding model, cut benefits, diverted transport funding to roads, cut all recent public transport subsidies, cancelled massive important infrastructure projects like damns and ferries (we are three ISLANDS), fast tracked mining, oil, and other massive environmentally detrimental projects and gave the power the to approve these projects singularly to three ministers who have been wined and dined by lobbyists of the companies that have put the bids in to approve them while one of the main minister infers he will not prioritise the protection of endangered species like the archeys frog over mining projects that do massive environmental harm. They have attacked indigenous rights in an attempt to negate the Treaty of Waitangi by “redefining it”; as a backup, they are also trying to remove all mentions of the treaty from legislation starting with our Child Protection laws no longer requiring social workers to consider the importance of Maori children’s culture when placing those children; when the Waitangi Tribunal who oversees indigenous matters sought to enquire about this, the Minister for Children blocked their enquiry in a breach of comity that was condemned in a ruling — too late to do anything — by our Supreme Court. They have repealed labour protections around pay and 90 day trials, reversed our smoking ban, cancelled our EV subsidy, cancelled our water infrastructure scheme that would have given Maori iwi a say in water asset management, cancelled our biggest city’s fuel tax, made our treasury and inland revenue departments less accountable, dispensed of our Productivity Commission, begun work on charter schools and military boot camps in an obvious push towards privatisation, cancelled grants for first home buyers, reduced access to emergency housing, allowed no cause evictions, cancelled our Maori health system that would have given Maori control over their own public medical care and funding, cut funding of services like budgeting advice and food banks, cancelled the consumer advocacy council, cancelled our medicine regulations, repealed free prescriptions, deferred multiple hospital builds, failed to deliver on pre-election medical promises, reversed a gun ban created in response to the mosque shootings, brought back three strikes = life sentence policy, increased minimum wage by half the recommended amount, cancelled fair pay for disabled workers, reduced wheelchair services, reversed our oil and gas exploration ban, cancelled our climate emergency fund, cut science research funding including climate research, removed limits on killing sea lions, cut funding for the climate change commission, weakened our methane targets, cancelled Significant National Areas protections, have begun reversing our ban on live exports. Much of this was passed under urgency.
It’s been six months.

Small Business Accounting Services in New Zealand
When a small or midsize organization is focused on delivering its core services by using its available limited resources, the non-core activities like accounting must be left to third-parties that offer their services at a reasonable cost. It is way insignificant, when compared to hiring a team of dedicated accountants that would work in-house on a monthly payroll. Therefore, it makes sense to outsource all accounting work to a vendor or a third-party that can do it at a fraction of the cost. Here in New Zealand, one such small boutique practice is ‘Holly Blair Accounting’ that offers such specialized services & packages.
If you’re a beauty spa, salon, health clinic, dental practice, law firm, restaurant, cafe, convenience store, garage or any other small business in a local region, hiring a personal tax accountant or an accountancy firm makes sense. In fact, they can help you out with all your tax related matters, including filing yearly IT returns, assisting in tax preparation, internal audit, financial statement management, tracking company expenses, payroll & bookkeeping. This is how a small business can focus on its core deliverables, and leave all their accounting woes to specialist agencies.
Professional Accounting Services Helping Micro Businesses Manage their Income & Expenses
If you’re a GST registered business, and looking for the services of a tax expert that can handle your GST payments and invoices, one such small business accounting NZ firm can help you with all the paperwork and documentation. Similarly, if you’re an individual looking to manage your accounts and reduce your tax obligations, a personal tax account or a CPA can be the best bet. And, if it is a Xero Advisor Certified company or a registered tax agent in NZ, you can be rest assured that everything would be taken care of in a professional and systematic way, by using the latest accounting software.
Whether it is year-end income tax return filing, Xero subscription, Xero training, GST filing, etc. for small and micro businesses, one such certified accountant Auckland can help you with accurate and flawless services. The fees are very nominal, starting from $110 NZD per month, and even lesser in some exceptional cases. The pricing differs for core accounting packages and income tax return services. Therefore, if you’re in need of a certified public accountant (CPA), chartered accountant or a personal tax accountant, a registered accountancy practice must always be considered.

linds_cantrell: Did I dream it??? That’s a wrap on S2 @ourflaghbomax and a wrap on my time in New Zealand... (for now!) Someone once said “don’t get too excited, travel work is still work,” and while I agree that it was tough navigating a new country’s studio, driving on the left, signing up for bank accounts & tax business, it was never work to make NZ feel like home. Thank you to everyone that made it possible for me to have the experience I had.

You meet a better sort of bum in a marina.
Tumblr media
1st of April 2024: I know, April fools day. However it was the day we chose to start to live on board our new boat. We had meticulously packed so we each had 30kg, as allowed by Qantas. This process took into account the things already on board, those we may need, those things we just wanted to take whether we needed them or not and those things we want to have just in case. Another 3 hour flight and 3 hour car ride. We hired a car for a week to be able to get to all of the shops and buy all of the stuff we would need. Mainly food and gas and fuel.
3rd April 2024: Paid a visit to customs as our customs form stated we were able to stay in New Zealand on Mai Tai until June 2024. We wanted to stay for the allotted 2 years each boat receives when they first arrive, but somewhere in the purchase this was changed to June. So we started the process at customs. We found out that having a foreign boat in New Zealand allowed us to avoid all taxes on any purchases. Wow so if we needed a new freezer @ $2500 NZ we would get $375 off. Not too shabby.
Tumblr media
5th April 2024: Went to my first yoga class in Opua. So close to the Marina, I just walked about 10 minutes and the community hall was next to the car ferry. Great view of the BOI from the front door. Great class run by a lovely lady called Ines who was selling bananas from her tree.
Tumblr media
We had to sort out our gas cylinders as they were foreign and we couldn't get them filled here in NZ. They didn't meet their high standard but fit perfectly into our cubby hole for cylinders in the cock pit. So on the last day before we returned the car we drove to Keri Keri where a cylinder servicing centre was only too happy to help. They said the cylinders were aluminium and worth about $400 each. They would be good for a few more years yet. Great news as we were thinking of just getting new ones. Back to Whangarie delivered the car, taxi to bus station, bus back to Opua, walk down the hill and now we are truly living on a boat without any other form of transport.
On the morning of the 5th our good friends from Bali were here on a cruise and we were able to pick them up and bring them to the boat. Still no sailing as we were waiting for a sail track installation. It was great to welcome aboard our first guests and they loved the boat. Ironically, they will be back next week on a different cruise, so we will see them again and go sailing.
While we we in Whangarie, the good guys from New Zealand Yacht Services came to check everything was ready for the sail track install. It just happened that they were able to get the boom off easily, remove the old track easily and so they decided to install the new track. We weren't even there. Job done and now we can go sailing.
11th April 2024: Extreme weather conditions saw us stuck on board for nearly 2 days and during the night the font hatch in the main cabin leaked. My pillow and mattress was wet and my enthusiasm dampened. So since we bought the boat, the sail track needed replacing, the gennaker was torn to shreds so a new one was ordered, the helm clutch break knob fell off and had to be repaired and replaced and now the hatch leaked. Luckily the boat came with spares and David re installed a new one and its water proof! yay!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
15th April 2024: Peter and Diana arrived and we took off. We stretched our sails into nearly zero wind and had a fun day trying to make Mai Tai go without much help from the westerly. We picked up a mooring for $600 for 6 weeks in Kororareka bay, just off Russell old town. Beautiful spot.
18th April 2024: Went to yoga in Russell. First time David drove me to shore in the tender and went for a walk while I made new acquaintance with my muscles. Then off to Opua for a Rally meeting. It was extreemly informative and there are about 60 to 70 boats going between May and June. Some are going to Tonga, Tahiti, Fiji and Vanuatu. We are excited to go in 2025, but seriously need to get to know our boat first.
16th April 2024: Yoga again in Opua, washing and we got our yellow customs form! So David bought a fishing rod and some new lines and a custom step we designed so we can easily step up onto the roof when sailing. Looks great. Now we just need some great weather and we are off to explore the Bay Of Islands and catch a fish.

AvA/AvM Fans!
A reminder to those who want the plushes - the price you see on the website DOES NOT INCLUDE THE SHIPPING!
Shipping is extra! $5 per plush in the US, $15 per plush in New Zealand and Canada and $10 per plush everywhere else they ship to!
I am unsure at this time if the full set will count as “one plush” or if you will have to pay shipping on each plush individually, but I am guessing it will be the latter, because if they can squeeze more money out of you they will.
Edit to add: Taxes are also a thing to consider! They can increase the price quite a bit too depending on where you are!
For example: I live in Canada, so I will be paying $200 CAD for the set. If I pay shipping per plush, that’s $20 CAD per plush, so 9x$20 = $180+$200 = $380 CAD and then multiply that by 1.15 to account for taxes… that’s… $440 CAD for the set.
If I’m lucky and the set counts as a single plush for the purposes of shipping it’ll only cost $255 CA.
If I want to take my chances with the blind bag, with taxes and shipping it’s $70 CAD per plush.

Hi! Can you explain more about what you told about Mitch Evans and NZ?
ive covered this like twice before? even posted screenshots of his meltdown which might still be around on my blog somewhere.
pretty much, during the height of covid in 2021 mitch evans went on an instagram rant about not being able to return home to new zealand for his grandmothers funeral.
mitch lives in monaco, because like many many racing drivers he loves tax evasion and parties. he was born in auckland, new zealand. when nz was briefly opened back up for travel at the start of lockdown so people abroad could come home, mitch chose not to reserve a spot to return to nz. nz was strict witn our covid rules because being strict fucking worked. we had one covid death in 2021, and that person actually died the same week mitch had his rant which was unfortunate timing for him to be sure.
he pretty much went on an insta story a tirade about how he couldn't get back in the country cos lockdown and how Jacinda Ardern (pm at the time) and the Labour party were ruining the country and nz should just open up again (rhetoric which went on to trigger a month long invasion of parliament grounds that i had to walk past/through every day to get to work. it also lead to ardern resigning from her prime minister role last year because people got militant and conspiratorial about our lockdown and it was genuinely bad for her safety and mental health.)
evans also retweeted anti-lockdown tweets by the twitter account for the ACT party, which at the time was our furthest far-right party in the country and which is now unfortunately in charge due to a coalition agreement from hell and christopher luxon not having a fucking spine. ACT (and NZ First, another right wing coalition party) got their votes by playing into anti-lockdown cooker crowds and now we've got two racist, transphobic, evil little men for deputy pms alongside a businessman who wanted to be pm for the title alone and is coming to the realization hes become a puppet for the two demons he signed a coalition agreement with.
I've little empathy for mitch evans. He had a solid month (and more, i recall months space between our 2020 and 2021 lockdowns) to return home and certainly had the money MANY nzers didn't to allocate himself a space in one of the hotels for the mandatory 2 week quarantine. It's awful he couldn't attend his grandmothers funeral but he had ample time to move back to nz for lockdown. i just cannot respect someone with the kind of audience and reach he has having the kind of meltdown where you repeat the complaints of sexist nutjobs about the prime minister on your insta and retweet the fucking ACT party. the fucking ACT party.

Hey!
I'm planning on doing a 3-month-long internship in New Zealand next April and while I'm very excited (LOTR!) I'm also scared. Because it's like. The furthest country from mine. On the literal opposite point of the globe. And I know nothing of how to get a flat there or something.
So since you've been there for a time, do you have any tips or piece of advice for me?
Thanks
Hey!
Man, that’s hella exciting! NZ can be a bit pricey, but it’s liveable and a beautiful place. My tip would be to avoid anywhere rainforesty, in my experience it’s more conservative for some reason?? As in more sexist and homophobic out where the rainforest is. Idk why — So like the Coromandel, West Coast of the South Island etc.
That’s just my experience though!
Get yourself a good little Toyota over here and nothing else. Cars suck here for some reason. Plus fuel is hella expensive, so a small Toyota will save you money.
To find accommodation, join the local Facebook pages of wherever you’re moving to and put a post up about looking for a room. Best bet is that way. Also, Facebook Marketplace is generally a good way to go too.
Set up your bank details with a NZ bank account before moving here, including an IRD number for tax purposes. All can be done online. I recommend BNZ for banking.
Unless you’re moving to a city right away, get a NZ simcard at whatever airport you arrive at. More likely to be expensive, but better than being stuck somewhere rural with no signal.
If you don’t look over 25, NZ only accepts NZ drivers licenses or your passport as ID to purchase/order alcohol. No exceptions.
It’s wise to always carry a little cash on you, say around $100 in your wallet. Never know when you’re gonna hit somewhere that doesn’t have signal to use eftpos.
Burgerfuel is elite.
Stay the fuck out of Otago in terms of living, especially Queenstown. Only visit for a holiday or you will be homeless within a week due their housing crisis and cost of living crisis.
Where abouts are you moving to? Flick me a private message if you like and I can help you out some more!

How to Move to New Zealand from Australia
Have you ever wondered about how to move to New Zealand from Australia, but feel like you are lacking some of the practical information to make the transition across the Tasman Sea? While Australia and New Zealand may be close to each other geographically, there is still a lot to consider and plan for when making this move, even if you have the help of international removalists.
At Overseas Packers & Shippers, we are an international moving company that loves helping Australians start a new life in the beautiful country of New Zealand. In this guide, we are going to explore some of the practical steps you can take to prepare for moving to the land of the long white cloud.
Obtaining Visas and Residency Permits
When moving to New Zealand from Australia, it’s important to have a grasp over any visa or residency permit requirements you need to fulfil before you can live, work or study in the country. The good news is that Australian citizens do not require a visa to enter and live in New Zealand given the close relationship between the two nations. Instead, you will be granted a resident visa when you arrive in New Zealand — so long as you meet the required health and character conditions.
If you are not an Australian citizen, then you will need to apply for either a work, study, or residency visa. The eligibility criteria for each of these differs, so make sure you thoroughly research what is required of you and give yourself plenty of time for your application to be processed prior to your move.
Understanding Immigration Requirements for Moving to New Zealand
Moving from Australia to New Zealand thankfully doesn’t pose too many headaches given the close nature between the two countries. In fact, Australian citizens only need to apply for an Australian Resident Visa once they arrive in the country. There aren’t any other immigration requirements beyond this.
So, as long as you don’t have a criminal record that could label you as a security threat in New Zealand, entering the country as an Australian citizen is quite simple and straightforward.
Financial Responsibilities
When relocating from Australia to New Zealand, you’ll encounter several financial responsibilities. Firstly, you’ll need to open a new bank account in New Zealand, as your Australian account may not be practical for local transactions. Ensure you provide the necessary documentation and identification to facilitate this process.
Next, consider currency exchange. The Australian Dollar (AUD) differs from the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). It’s advisable to convert your funds at favourable rates to avoid exchange rate losses. Overseas Packers & Shippers offers a currency exchange service as a convenient add-on to help facilitate this.
You should be prepared for potential tax implications, such as capital gains tax on assets. Consulting a financial advisor can help navigate these financial responsibilities smoothly during your move.

Everything You Need to Know About SMSF Accountants
Tumblr media
Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSFs) are a popular choice for Australians looking to take control of their retirement savings. However, managing an SMSF involves complex financial, tax, and compliance responsibilities that can be daunting for many. This is where an SMSF accountant comes into play. In this blog, we will explore the role of an SMSF accountant, the benefits of hiring one, and how to choose the right accountant for your SMSF.
What is an SMSF Accountant?
An SMSF accountant is a specialized professional who assists SMSF trustees in managing the financial and compliance aspects of their fund. These accountants have expertise in superannuation laws, tax regulations, and the financial strategies needed to optimize the performance of an SMSF. Their primary goal is to ensure that the fund complies with all legal requirements while maximizing the financial benefits for its members.
The Role of an SMSF Accountant
Compliance and Regulatory Advice
Ensuring that the SMSF adheres to the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993 (SIS Act) and the regulations set by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is crucial. An SMSF accountant provides guidance on compliance matters, helping trustees avoid costly penalties.
Financial Reporting and Auditing
SMSFs are required to prepare annual financial statements and have them audited by an independent auditor. An SMSF accountant prepares these statements, ensuring they meet the required standards and are ready for the audit process.
Taxation Services
SMSFs must lodge annual tax returns. An SMSF accountant handles all tax-related matters, including calculating tax liabilities, maximizing tax deductions, and ensuring timely lodgment of tax returns.
Investment Strategy Development
Crafting a sound investment strategy that aligns with the fund’s goals and members’ risk profiles is essential. SMSF accountants provide insights and recommendations on investment choices, helping trustees make informed decisions.
Administration and Record-Keeping
Managing an SMSF involves extensive paperwork and record-keeping. SMSF accountants assist with the administrative burden, ensuring all records are accurate and up-to-date.
Benefits of Hiring an SMSF Accountant
Expertise and Knowledge
SMSF accountants bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table, ensuring that your fund operates within the legal framework and achieves its financial objectives.
Time-Saving
Managing an SMSF can be time-consuming. By outsourcing the financial and compliance tasks to an SMSF accountant, trustees can focus on other aspects of their lives while having peace of mind that their fund is in good hands.
Minimized Risk
Non-compliance with superannuation laws can result in severe penalties. An SMSF accountant helps mitigate this risk by ensuring that the fund complies with all relevant regulations.
Optimized Financial Performance
With their financial acumen, SMSF accountants can help maximize the returns on your investments, providing strategic advice tailored to your fund’s objectives.
Choosing the Right SMSF Accountant
Qualifications and Experience
Look for an accountant with specific qualifications in SMSF management and a proven track record of working with SMSFs. Membership in professional bodies such as CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) is a good indicator of their expertise.
Reputation and References
Research the accountant’s reputation and seek references from other SMSF trustees. Positive testimonials and reviews can provide insight into their reliability and quality of service.
Fees and Services
Understand the fee structure and the range of services offered. Some accountants may charge a flat fee, while others may bill hourly. Ensure their services align with your needs and budget.
Communication and Accessibility
Effective communication is key to a successful partnership. Choose an accountant who is accessible, responsive, and willing to explain complex matters in a way that you understand.

SMSF Accountant Gold Coast: Your Guide to Self-Managed Super Funds
Tumblr media
As retirement approaches, securing your financial future becomes a top priority. One of the increasingly popular options for Australians is the Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF). Managing an SMSF offers greater control and flexibility over your retirement savings, but it also comes with its own set of challenges and responsibilities. That’s where an SMSF accountant Gold Coast can be invaluable. In this blog, we’ll explore what an SMSF accountant does, the benefits of hiring one, and how to choose the right professional for your needs.
What is an SMSF?
A Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) is a private superannuation fund that you manage yourself, as opposed to having your retirement savings managed by a superannuation fund provider. An SMSF can have up to six members, all of whom are typically trustees responsible for managing the fund in accordance with Australian superannuation laws and regulations.
Role of an SMSF Accountant
An SMSF accountant plays a crucial role in helping you manage your self-managed super fund efficiently and compliantly. Here are some key services they provide:
Setup and Structuring: An SMSF accountant helps set up your SMSF correctly, ensuring that it meets all legal requirements and is structured in a tax-efficient manner.
Compliance and Reporting: SMSFs are subject to strict regulatory requirements. An SMSF accountant ensures that your fund complies with all relevant laws, handles the necessary reporting to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), and prepares annual financial statements.
Taxation: Managing the tax aspects of an SMSF can be complex. An SMSF accountant provides advice on tax strategies, lodges tax returns, and ensures that your fund takes advantage of any available tax concessions.
Audit Coordination: SMSFs must be audited annually by an independent auditor. An SMSF accountant liaises with the auditor and prepares all required documentation to facilitate the audit process.
Investment Guidance: While they cannot provide specific financial advice, an SMSF accountant can help you understand the implications of your investment choices and ensure they align with your fund's investment strategy and risk profile.
Benefits of Hiring an SMSF Accountant on the Gold Coast
Local Expertise: A Gold Coast-based SMSF accountant has a deep understanding of the local market and regulations, providing tailored advice that suits your specific needs and circumstances.
Peace of Mind: Managing an SMSF involves significant administrative and compliance work. An accountant handles these responsibilities, giving you peace of mind and more time to focus on your investment strategy.
Cost-Effective: While there are costs involved in hiring an SMSF accountant, their expertise can help you avoid costly mistakes and potential penalties, making their services a worthwhile investment.
Personalized Service: A local SMSF accountant can offer personalized, face-to-face service, building a relationship based on trust and understanding of your unique financial goals.
How to Choose the Right SMSF Accountant on the Gold Coast
Qualifications and Experience: Ensure the accountant is qualified and has extensive experience in SMSF management. Look for memberships in professional bodies such as CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
Reputation: Research reviews and testimonials from other clients. A reputable SMSF accountant will have positive feedback and a track record of satisfied customers.
Services Offered: Different accountants offer varying levels of service. Choose one whose services align with your needs, whether it's basic compliance or comprehensive management and advisory.
Communication: Effective communication is key to a successful partnership. Choose an accountant who is responsive and able to explain complex matters in simple terms.
Fees: Understand the fee structure and ensure it is transparent. Compare costs with the services provided to ensure you are getting value for your money.
