Riprese a camminare.

Colombo Fort
One day in Colombo is enough for me. It’s time to get out of here.
By this point, I have been awake for almost 48 hours, surviving off fitful sleep due to a toxic combination of insomnia and extreme apprehension. My next quest: finding the way to the city’s train station in pitch blackness. I’m jumping headfirst into this for someone who’s afraid of the dark.
I leave my accommodation and am startled by a fellow solo female traveller who seems to be waiting for a taxi. We give each other nods of understanding that only those in our shoes would get before I cross the intersection. I silently wish her all the best.
Remarkably, my sojourn goes without a hitch, minus some tuk-tuk honks and unwanted catcalls, and the rambling structure of Colombo Fort looms on the horizon.
Tumblr media
At five o’clock in the morning, the only sounds you hear are the murmurings of people waiting for trains or the snoring of folks sleeping on benches. There’s barely anywhere to sit, and I still have another hour until the Habarana train arrives.
Meandering down Platform 6 in search of somewhere suitable to plonk down leads me to a Sri Lankan woman who looks up at me with an enormous gap-toothed grin. She is in her late 50s and emanates a motherly warmth that I could really use right now.
“Please! Come sit!” she gestures beside her.
Gratefully, I put my backpack down and perch on the hard pew with a tentative smile. She asks me where I’m going and, in return, offers that she’s on her way to Matara along the south coast. I’ll get there eventually, but I’m heading inland for the first part of my trip.
As with all interactions in the middle of the night, it gets personal quite quickly, and she tells me her husband died and left her with a son. When she inquires where I come from, I perceive that she’s curious about my ethnicity, not my nationality, and I give her what she wants.
“My son always wanted to go there. Unfortunately, he has no money. I have no money either. What am I supposed to do? My husband died and left me with nothing.”
I am increasingly becoming uncomfortable with the glaringly obvious differences between us, as I’m clearly someone of some leisure who has the means to leave my country and travel to far-off lands, and she knows it. I slowly wind the exchange down on my end and merely nod at each additional comment about her lack of prospects, which seem endless.
A train pulls into Platform 4, and she suddenly pokes me hard. This convoy to Trincomalee technically also stops at Habarana, but my ticket and seat reservation are for the one heading to Batticaloa, which is coming in 20 minutes. That doesn’t seem to matter to her, and she keeps pulling my sleeve, encouraging me to get on, and not taking no for an answer.
I’m at my wit’s end, but it’s not her fault. Receiving her enthusiasm with the good intentions it is bestowed, I gather my things, say thank you, and start walking towards the stairs. She quickly disappears from view.
Along the way, I see other backpackers talking about heading to Sigiriya via Habarana, as I am. They are clustered along Platform 6.
So, I go back to my gut instincts and stay put.

Research | An Everyman's Morning
Tumblr media
Bambalapitiya, 7.43 a.m
In order to better understand the obstacles and boons that I can place in my main character's path, I must first garner a better understanding of the world around me during the morning. This research segment will be divided into two facets; my own observations and data gathered from those around me.
This segment will focus on one such study of the former, of which I intend to do a few more of. I have taken some photos around campus between 7.00 and 8.00 a.m. This is just after the sun has risen, but still early enough that people are out and about on the roads, making their daily commute. These photos aren't good, they are meant to function as on-the-go notes which I will elaborate on here.
Looking at the types of people I saw in my commute, I divided them into people who have business being on the road, and those who have absolutely no business on the road. Loiterers. The first group comprises of people heading to work or school in the morning. Some wait for the bus, some low income earners begin setting up shop, sweeping the road, etc, three wheelers begin their daily hires, policemen begin (wrongly) directing traffic, and a few commute to work via their personal vehicle. Even for those who don't have a job, such as housewives/househusbands, they would begin on their journey to buy groceries for the day.
Tumblr media
Then there are those with too much time on their hands. They wake up in the morning to socialise with their friends, maybe over a cup of tea or a smoke. I noticed that since it's earlier in the morning, there is less of an urgency to get to work, but just enough that there is traffic mostly due to school. Additionally, most people who wake up early with time on their hands tend to be old; neighbourhood aunty gossip circles and older uncles walking aimlessly. The young minority with time on their hands tend to put that energy into training, such as running, cycling, rowing, or any other form of cardio.
A phenomena I observed in Galle (the South of Sri Lanka) is the rising abundance of small concerts or performances during the sunrise, to celebrate the new day or simply to greet the morning with the arts. These people fall squarely into the category of people with too much time on their hands.
Here are some observations I made of people themselves. Some taxi drivers fall asleep in their vehicles after long nights, people like jaywalking which might inadvertently cause traffic, the roads of Colombo themselves are built on a terrible infrastructure, and during rush hour, some people just don't feel like rushing which causes problems for other people on the road.
These are the first set of surface level observations that I have noted down on Colombo in the mornings. With this, I have an idea for some obstacles I could place in my character's path;
Beginning -> MC hails a trishaw -> gets stuck in traffic -> MC has to get off -> MC rents a bike on the side of the road -> has to weave through a morning market -> knocks some stalls over -> ditches the bike and decides to run to the look out point -> reaches the sunrise
I intend on conducting more research to inform these choices, which may change over the course of this phase.

Medirigiriya: A Gateway to Sri Lankan Heritage
Tumblr media
Located in the Polonnaruwa District of Sri Lanka, Medirigiriya is a small town that holds great historical significance. The town is home to an ancient Buddhist monastery complex, which dates back to the 3rd century BC. This complex is a testimony to the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lanka and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Let's take a closer look at what makes Medirigiriya such an important part of Sri Lanka's cultural landscape.
The History of Medirigiriya
According to historical records, Medirigiriya was established during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BC. At the time, it was known as 'Methkiriya', which translates to 'Sugar Castle' in Sinhalese. The town was an important hub for Buddhist learning and was home to a large monastic complex that housed over 1,000 monks.
The ruins of this ancient monastery complex are still visible today and are spread across an area of over 30 hectares. The site features a number of impressive structures, including a massive dagoba, a number of stupa bases, and the ruins of a monastery. The architecture and design of these structures provide a glimpse into the advanced engineering and construction techniques that were used during this period.
What to See in Medirigiriya
The main attraction in Medirigiriya is the ancient Buddhist monastery complex. Visitors can explore the ruins of the monastery and marvel at the intricate details and craftsmanship that went into its construction. The complex is home to a number of impressive structures, including the Medirigiriya Stupa, which is one of the largest and most impressive dagobas in Sri Lanka.
Another interesting feature of the complex is the Medirigiriya Vatadage, which is a circular structure that is thought to have housed a relic of the Buddha. Traveling in Sri Lanka.
It is a grate sharing my pleasure in Sri Lankan with you.
I was really exited to travel to Sri Lanka from the start. Me and my friends planed this for months. At first we just wanted to travel somewhere i suggested them about this fabulous island called Sri Lanka. I have read and heard about Sri Lanka so many times they all said this place is the best in South Asia. Mr. Brad (our neighbor) once traveled Sri Lanka with his family months ago, he talked about the country for days and my curiosity met it’s edge.
After a month we arrived at Bandaranayake International Airport we traveled in Colombo for 3 days we went to Green galle face beach, Colombo Arcade and nelum kuluna (Lotus Tower) the second tallest structure in South Asia.
And then we decided to travel to the city called Kandy this city has got many historical values such as Temple Of Tooth, International Buddhist Museum and Royal Palace of Kandy are some awesome places to visit. traveling in here is fun we used public transportation as much as we can and locals a really good people they helped us without any hesitation. We had to travel to some places with private transportation so we looked on internet for a cab service in Kandy and we found Kandy call taxi the driver was very friendly and helpful. I really started to miss Sri Lanka the country I always wanted to go.
