always fishing for trouble i see
give your most unpopular/controversial opinion about love.
it doesn't heal. your hurt is not something love can take away. love is more like. the bandage that you wrap around your scraped knee. the kiss you press on top of it to make it better. it's not a miracle. it's warmth. and sometimes, that's better.
and you can't make people love you. no matter how good and perfect and lovely you are. no matter how much you've helped someone. you can't make them love you. love is not something that can be planned and achieved, unfortunately. and it's okay. not everyone who you love will love you, and it's okay. here's what you need to hear: they don't owe it to you. kindness and basic human decency is your right, yes. but love? it's something EVERYONE deserves, yes. but not from everyone you want. like. you can't just love someone and demand them to love you back. it's not a transaction. it hurts, it really does, when someone who you love and treat with utmost care doesn't love you back. but it happens. it's okay. all you can do is move on when it starts hurting you. and not let bitterness stop you from loving people. because the core of everything is love. loving people and this stupid world keeps us going. don't give up on that.

Hearing @taylorswift say she struggles with not feeling like a person has made it to where I need Taylor Swift to realize that she’s so much more than her music to us. Sure, her songs comfort us, move us, motivate us, sadden us. Sure, her voice is the one that sings us to sleep when we’re happy, or sad, or positively livid- but we love her beyond that. She’s more than lyrics and melodies, she’s more than her name. We love her because of HER. Her absolute devotion to her family, her diehard loyalty and support, her obsession with her cats. We love her for her addiction to scrabble and quilts, we love her for the way she bakes treats, and fangirls over fall. We love her for her smile, and the way her eyes shine. We love her for the way she speaks out about things she finds important, the way she’s there for us without fail. We love her for the way she will stand her ground when needed and also admit her mistakes. We love her for the way she laughs, the way she loves whale puns and cheesy jokes. We love her for HER, not just her music. Not just her brand. And I hope she knows that.

Earthspark spoilers but not too much mostly meant for a discussion! Click read more~!
Tumblr media
Alright, since Earthspark is out we have to talk about something IMPORTANT, cause I'm already seeing some iffy but not judgy complaints for the mcs especially the black boy, Robby. Now, let me start this off by saying, cause I know once I finish writing this people might not see the end, I am not saying you can't dislike him or his sister, Moe. But I am BEGGING this fandom and everybody in general to be glad they are allowing their black child mcs to be immature and expressive just like other white mcs in the past series have been. *cough* Jack *cough* Robby by all means still has a certain level of maturity and ingenuity shown in the first episode despite his own outburst to be suddenly moved to another way too far out of state place compared to the city, which is jarring and scary for a whole slew of reasons, yet he still helps and waits for his younger sister when her bike needs fixing. But he has the right to be upset and the episode frames that in a great way for a black family, where the child gets to express themselves freely but has the space to be angry. And this may not seem "likable" to some but to me, it's a really sweet scene that shows Dot and Alex are understanding of their son's anger but also, they have their reasons for moving. And stick by it, which again for Dot, a black woman, her husband putting her dreams first, peak. We don't see that ENOUGH! So, what I'm trying to say is, try to be a bit more understanding of these emotions and family dynamics we'll see in this show from a black perspective.

Why I Love Maxine Mayfield’s Storyline (spoilers):
I am a mental health clinician and Max’s storyline really hits home for me, especially this season. It is beautiful, tragic, complicated and powerfully explores important aspects of mental health/illness such as grief, trauma, depression and suicide. I know many people are disappointed that Max still fell victim to Vecna in the final episode of the season, especially after seeing that pivotal and inspiring scene in episode 4, but here’s why I personally understand it (I’m not okay with it because Max is mah GIRL): from a psychological perspective, it makes sense and brings awareness to the people dealing with these mental health concerns on a weekly or daily basis. When we get technical, that moment really represents depression and suicide extremely accurately in that people do manage to fight against their depression and suicidal ideations, but the risk of relapse is completely real (similar to addiction). As many people have already deciphered, Vecna represents depression and suicide; he feeds on his victims’ darkest moments, thoughts and feelings, as well as grief and guilt (or perhaps he, or those thoughts, cause the guilt and grief??). These are risk factors I see everyday when I meet with the kiddos in my office (age range is 5-18). To add to the realistic nature of her “death” in episode 9, she tells Lucas she’s not ready as she is dying in his arms. This is also very realistic and relatable because many suicide survivors (including the ones I have worked with) have reported regretting acting upon their ideations, and have shared feeling most terrified of death in the moment where they thought they’d want it most.
Tumblr media
Another important point is that the confusion and disappointment that came after Max’s “death” (which essentially represented a depressive/suicidal relapse) is supposed to happen. Many people who know someone who battles depression often become hurt or confused when they find out that the person in question, who was doing really well for a while, had relapsed back into that depressive state. Some thoughts are “what happened?” “I thought they were doing better?” “But didn’t they overcome that?” These are all logical questions, both in real life and in regards to Max, but the point is that it does sometimes happen. Depression bullies people into believing they are a burden, or that they are guilty of some horrible thing that they realistically had no control over, in Max’s case this being Billy’s death. She shoulders a LOT, if not all of blame for that even when we, as the viewers, know there was nothing she could’ve done; it all happened so fast. She entered the food court where Billy and the Jelly-Mindflayer was and within 3 seconds he had been punched through the abdomen. However, the trauma and grief (much of it being fueled by their indifferent relationship) are running circles in our dear Max, which is leading her to place the guilt on herself, “the shitty little sister”. This does happen and it can be extremely debilitating for those dealing with it (as we saw with her: she was isolating, lost pleasure in fun activities she normally enjoyed, rejected social interactions, her grades were dropping, she was more irritable, was having suicidal thoughts etc.)
As for the push and pull she experienced regarding Billy, that is accurate too because that involves trauma, and trauma is tricky. Many were confused (even angry) that Max shares with Vecna that she experienced dark thoughts about something bad happening to Billy, and that many times she even hoped it would happen. But what about her letter to him in episode 4? I can sympathize with both sides of her dilemma with her step-brother, because, let’s be honest here: Billy was abusive to Max in many ways, was a known racist and made every day hell for her; i.e., driving dangerously with her in the car, pretending like he was going to run over her friends, breaking her skateboard when he found her talking with Lucas, calling her a “little shit” and lord knows what else we didn’t see. As for Billy himself (and as a therapist), I do sympathize with him because given his own difficult and traumatizing backstory, he was made into who he was by his abusive father. Was Billy’s development into that “asshole” understandable? Absolutely, his father can screw off for all I care for ruining what could’ve been a truly wonderful person, but does Billy’s backstory make his actions okay? No. But again, I sympathize and feel truly sorry for him, he didn’t deserve to go through that, but neither did Max. See how complicated is? Max and Billy’s dynamic opens up a conversation about domestic violence, abusive parents, and patterns of abuse sometimes continued on by those who receive it.
Tumblr media
Getting back to Max, I understand and respect both sides of Max’s conflict and can’t even begin to understand how confusing it must be to work her head around such contrasting thoughts, where in one breath she sounds like she truly loved her step-brother, but in the next breath saying she hated him.
I could go on and on and on and on about Max’s storyline: her being a tomboy in the 80s, being bullied because of it (but clearly not giving a shit, which I love), moving to a new town in Indiana far away from her Californian father who she clearly missed (S2), losing her new best friend, El, due to her moving away, her whole life getting flipped upside down following Billy’s death, and simply navigating the confusing stage of being a teenager etc., but I’d be here for a week. Just some of my takes on her story and why I appreciate it, especially coming from the mental health field itself. Hoping she’ll pull through in the end, and her fighting spirit, plus her friends, may be enough to save her.
If you read through this whole thing, I appreciate you ❤️❤️❤️
