Game design hot take: team death match is a shity game mode that shooters should have left behind in the 2000s.

If you analyze them from the perspective of low skill players, in pretty much every other game mode, you can still contribute no matter how bad at the game you are. Your presence is always better than nothing. And even a bar that low, TDM still manages to trip over. For bad players, the game mode consists of being constantly told by the game itself that you shouldn't be here.

Every time that you die and you see the enemy score tick up, and then at the end when you see the stats screen with your 10 deaths and 2 kills, the game tells you: "your presence is actively hurting your team." Not just that your they would be better off if you were replaced by a better player, but that having no one would be better than you. And being told that obviously makes you feel like shit.

Other game modes don't have this problem. In objective based modes like king of the hill or capture the flag, you can still contribute to attacking or defending the objective. And even if you die, it doesn't have the same negative impact that it does in TDM.

Even other versions of death match don't have this problem. In free for all, there's no team for you to let down. And in attrition in Titanfall, which is just modified TDM, there is still stuff for you to do and ways you can contribute even at lower skill levels.

And this problem is compounded even further by how most multiplayer games now-days turn MMR into a score to improve. Every game makes your rank visible and associates fancier icons with higher ranks. So the goal of the game stops being having fun or even just winning the match, instead it becomes to increase your rank. So your low skill isn't just hurting your team for this match, it has a lasting affect on your teammates' scores.

WOO ok now i make you hear about lilifyre. my muse. my daughter. my former self insert. strap in its a long one

so basically when i was in year four i wanted to be a minecraft youtuber so i went on a minecraft skin maker and made a girl with blue purple pink hair and dan tdm glasses. she was named lilyfire cause it sounded cool.

some months after this i kinda gave up on the youtuber thing and decided to make it so that she came from a minecraft universe and somehow teleported out of it into a real world, giving her red orange yellow hair and a purple dress. also i got her a girlfriend her name is sunburst.

around year six she'd found herself a brother named getty who has a girlfriend named imogen because i really liked the name getty images for some reason. also she became a dimension traveller cause i was getting into fandoms. basically the lore at that point was she was born in a human 'verse, which had discovered portals to fandom universes all over earth. the cuphead and bendy universes were like right next to each other btw. but lilyfire was the only one able to shapeshifter to fit the universe. for example my friend zee was big into undertale so i drew lilyfire in the ut universe as a sans-like. there's suiuuiper deep lore including the anti fangirls who were definitely a product of all the animation meme cringe compilations i watched at the time.

anyway, during the pandemic in poland i realised im not cis and identified as genderfae for a time, and also bought cat ears and a pink hoodie in poland. so i started pretending i was fuckin. an oc named klair and was totally mute until my mum made me knock it off so i made her a dimension traveller oc but she couldn't shapeshift. anyway i didn't know what to do with lilifyre (the letters had switched by this point) so i made her turn on her vast menagerie of friends so klair brutally murdered her. and kept a lock of hair as a trophy. what

anyway then there was jordyn but we don't talk about jordyn. now lilifyre is back and so are some of her entourage but she's like a kid to me not a self insert. she means so much to me and im such a lilifyre lore head but no one gets her cause i dont share much abt her. but she's an icon here's an older drawing (early this year)
