K-Pop Scandals 2023
This year had a lot of scandals, from serious abuse allegations and harmless dating scandals, to quite a few contract disputes between idols and companies. There were also a lot of news of members leaving their groups, fans being a pain in the ass and sending embarrassing protest trucks for pretty much anything, etc. So, check out my annual list of the most important k-pop scandals of 2023.

Predicting YG Entertainment New Boy Group (YGNBG) (Requested)
Remember, this is for entertainment purposes only!
Tumblr media
Is YG Entertainment preparing to launch a new boy group?
The tarot cards are hinting that YG Entertainment is getting ready for a new boy group, but they've got a lot of decisions to make and need to plan things out carefully. There are plenty of opportunities, but the company has to watch out for unrealistic choices and pick the best ones. The strategic aspect suggests that they are being very thorough and maybe keeping their plans under wraps. Lastly, while there's excitement, there might also be some uncertainty or dissatisfaction that needs to be sorted out before they can move forward.
When are they going to debut?
The tarot doesn't give specific dates, but the cards indicate that YG Entertainment's new boy group might debut sometime between late 2024 and early 2025. It looks like they'll take their time to plan and prepare before making their big entrance.
How many members are there going to be in the group?
According to the tarot cards, it seems like YG Entertainment's upcoming boy group will probably have 7 members.
What kind of music will YG Entertainment release for the group’s debut song?
The debut song might blend genres, incorporating elements of pop, R&B, and perhaps even some hip-hop or electronic influences to create a distinctive sound.
The lyrics and melody are likely to be emotionally rich, potentially exploring themes of dreams, aspirations, and introspection.
There might be an element of mystery or intrigue in the music, with clever lyrics or unexpected musical twists that set it apart from typical debut songs.
Music Style: A fusion of pop and R&B with electronic undertones, featuring layered harmonies and a dynamic beat.
Lyrics: The song's lyrics might talk about chasing dreams, navigating through illusions, and finding one's path amidst confusion. There could be a reflective bridge or rap section that adds depth and complexity.
What obstacles is YG Entertainment currently encountering with the debut of their new boy group?
The tarot cards are saying that YG Entertainment is facing some challenges with making decisions, planning strategically, and staying motivated while debuting their new boy group. To overcome these hurdles, the company needs to clarify its vision, build trust within the team, and find ways to reignite inspiration and enthusiasm to move forward successfully.

LOOPiN NEVER HAPPENED! DEBUT IF YOU CAN!

TREASURE's J.J.
I don't remember how fresh this information is because I don't know if I've mentioned it enough and in detail in this blog, but Jiahang was actually an YG trainee from age 14 to 16. He spend most of that time under KPlus, their model division, learning absolutely nothing because he's really hard to teach anything music related, God bless his heart. He got transferred last minute to active trainee because his millionaire dad paid the Hell out of everyone in charge to get him into the possible lineup for the at the time rumored YG Treasure Box. As a response to that, this man got BULLIED TO SHREDS by EVERYONE AROUND, and I'm talking SOUTH KOREAN ACCURATE BULLYING. Like, there's a reason why when he joined Boy Of The Week, a whole year after quitting YG, mind you!, that he had the shortest hair he ever had in his life and was desperate to not stand out.
But! Let's imagine a world in which he endured all that or some sort of interference happened so things didn't escalate to the point they had. If he never quitted YG, he would be put on Treasure Box, receive the most majestic and appealing cut in the history of reality television, and make it at the 11th to 13th cut, max. Debuting would make him the first chinese Idol under YG Entertainment, and although that would possibly skyrocket his fanbase in mainland China and a lot of SEA countries - specially because he lived in the Philippines! His tagalog is atrocious but hey! - it would also put an immense target on his back over How That Happened, despite the involvement of his father being very minimal in this canon compared to how tangled he had to get with New Wave Music to give Jiahang a spot in LOOPiN.
Really, I don't think he would stay long as a Treasure member by an infinity of reasons, in fact, I see him exiting the group alongside Mashiho and Yedam in late 2022, or maybe even earlier. I think he could make himself into an Idol archetype that worked for him in Treasure, but without anyone putting on the Produce Line pants and actually training him and making him drop the non ambitious act, as happened here, Idol life would get very boring and unfulfilling to Jiahang very fast.
After quitting Treasure, he would definely go back to the mainland, or maybe Taiwan or Hong Kong if he felt more like depending on his dad's influence, and stablish himself there. Do a ton of CFs, act a bit, model a little, regret back to ulzzang mostly, release one song once in a blue moon... And that's that!
ATEEZ's MINWOO.
Oh boy... So, Minwoo was the second ever trainee under KQ Entertainment, arriving at the company right after Hongjoong, and was immediately cut into the debut team. That ended up not lasting because of his constant fights with superiors and trainers, his push to be made the head of a fully self producing group - sounds familiar? Lmao -, as well as the fact that he couldn't get along with the forming trainee team in any way. Like, the Ateez members in LOOPiN canon hate him, just absolutely hate him, and they only had to deal with him for 8 months. Yet they have great reasons for that because MINWOO USED TO SUCK ASS!
That hatred would not digress all that much if he ended up debuting in Ateez, because he would debut extremely unsatisfied. There's also no reality in which he stays in the group longer than 2 years before getting the boot. Minwoo is not an Idol that can function anywhere outside of LOOPiN with all its particularities and the power that he was granted inside New Wave Music, that is like, almost unheard of for a trainee - the one thing I can compare it to, if I'm not mistaken, would be Bang Chan with Stray Kids, kind of, or Kahi with Afterschool, but even they didn't get that producer-ish status until they were already a) under the company for ages or b) already debuted and successful.
After being excused from Ateez, I don't think he would go down quietly; he would probably Say Too Much and tarnish his reputation in the process, making coming back in a group or even a soloist very hard, close to impossible, I would even say. That wouldn't discourage him from making music, and he would stay in the industry as a music producer, and maybe find career redemption there. And he would be extremely unhappy in a lifetime like that, by the way! Forever bitter his Idol dream didn't work! When I say Minwoo without LOOPiN would have turned out a miserable person, I mean it.
OOO's HANJAE.
Enough with the failures! Let's talk something that would work! Before being added to LOOPiN next minute to fill in Dongwook getting the chop, Hanjae was already under BBC and he was training with the guys that ended up becoming OnlyOneOf. If he hadn't made it as a replacement, he would get integrated into the lineup with ease, and get transferred to 8D with everyone and eventually debut in OOO.
I honestly think there's a lot of room for success for Hanjae in this version of canon, and much like will happen to him in LOOPiN eventually duo to both group's acting heavy concept - a concept that I find it so hard for Hanjae to execute without combusting, but I digress! - I see him getting a Rowoon/Eunwoo sort of deal and reaching popular actor status, as he's always intended to reach, and excel at it. Maybe because of OOO's nuguness, if you will, it would take him longer to get the sort of roles he's gotten up until now, but that would not frustrate Hanjae. He's definely someone that can be happy with moderate success, and that wouldn't fully succumb to the actor disease and ever leave the group - which might limited him more, too... But he isn't in it for glory and recognition, and honestly? That's a good mentality to have.
The only big loss I see in this version is his producing talents going by undiscovered, but he can live without them.
CRAVITY's HAEGON.
Okay, hear me out, I always had a clear vision of Cravity's Haegon. Just picture this: Kim Haegon, who spent most of his formative years as a Pledis trainee up until his favorite hyung Beomseok was dismissed from the company for 'being too old', which Haegon didn't take well back when he was 16, given their growing codependent sibling-ish deal. Now, if Beomseok had been firmer with him at that point in time and abandoned him for good - LIKE HE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO, ANYWAYS! BUT ANYWAYS! - instead of going along with his plan to hunt a place for them to debut and landing in Boy Of The Week, everything would be so different for him.
Would Haegon go apeshit then? Yes. In the same way he's gone apeshit at 22 when Beomseok left the group without discussing it with him? No. It would be so much healthier for them to have gone their separate ways when Haegon was still a teenager. Like, his way of getting 'revenge' at Beomseok would be to get into his former company, Starship Entertainment - the one that really fucked him up - and grind his way to debut there no matter what, literally, no matter what, because he still had a bigger goal. LOOPiN Haegon in 2022 had all his dreams 'fulfilled', in his perspective, and had nothing else to focus his energy on except for the fact that Beomseok was missing - and that Gyujin was taking his place.
A lot of things would happen to him as consequence of him going to Starship, like A LOT, too many to get into here, but most of them would be good development things. I also think his bound with the Cravity members would be way less chaotic than with LOOPiN, that was fucked by Beomseok being his ultimate priority - unless Cravity has members creating vicious circles of codependency between each other and I'm not familiar with that!
Anyways, he would SHINE in Cravity after debut, but I honestly think a Haegon that got separated from Beomseok much earlier and had responsible enough people around him would shine anywhere. Suck that's not his canon, though! It actually really sucks that's not who he is or will ever be, now! It hurts me! It really does!
AND THE OTHERS...?
Without LOOPiN on their way, Taesong, Seungsoo, Haruki, Dylan, O.z and Gyujin would all end up as regular citizens, or at the very least non Idol celebrities! But that would be a whole other post...

Sanghee always had a big personality, she made friends every where she went earning herself the title of a social butterfly from a young age. Despite her fun and social nature, many didn’t like her. Sanghee became a trainee under YG entertainment when she was 16, she trained for 2 years before terminating her contract and leaving the label because she didn’t get along with majority of the trainees and they simply pissed her off! ✯ Lisha Wen is the main vocalist of Bad Girls Club. Lisha was born and raised in New York City, her love for singing and arts in general came from a young age. Lisha has always been a fun girl, despite being a bit childish, she’s very easy to get along with and is known for her sense of humor. When becoming a trainee, Lisha was nervous to be in a new environment, but the girl made herself a name very quickly for insane talent and her almost taboo attitude. Lisha didn’t care who you were, if you disrespect her, she won’t sit back and take it. Though this gave her a reputation that didn’t quite fit her, it’s how she and Sanghee had became friends. Now as a member of Bad Girls Club, she’s earning herself a title as one of the best vocalist of the generation!

✯ Lim Yunseo know mononymously as Cloe is the Center and Lead Vocalist of Bad Girls Club. Growing up, Cloe had many many friends. This was simply because, she grew up in an area that appreciated social status, and Cloe’s family was absolutely loaded. Her personality, grew into one of a snob. Despite her awful personality, the young girl was always a talented vocalist and performer. She did dance and theatre when she was younger along side vocal lessons, later going to an arts high school. When becoming a trainee, she was heavily favored by Mindmix. She participated on Produce 48, nearly making it into iz*one. It soon became rumored among the trainees that Cloe’s parents paid a generous amount to have her debut and promoted well after the show. Despite this, the girl has many sides to her that others don’t know and is overlooked by many of her peers.

She finally expressed her love to her parents, and they couldn’t deny that she was talented at singing and writing so they looked into auditions for their daughter. She became a trainee not long after under Mindmix Media. Despite how much they did to support her, Taehee never felt like they cared about her enjoying it. Rather about how popular and rich their daughter would become. Despite this, she chose to ignore her negative feelings. ✯ Matsuno Erena is the Lead Rapper and Lead Dancer of Bad Girls Club. Erena always had a big passion for arts and fashion. The girl always was bright, but she had a stand-off demeanor and a strong rbf leaving the girl to be a bit of a loner in school. Despite this she focused hard on dance and at the age of 15 she moved to South Korea and joined Heartkind Labels. She soon debuted at age 17 in the group ‘COLORIZED’ which disbanded two years later due to lack of attention and budget. Heavily disappointed, the girl considered returning to Japan and taking a look into the fashion industry. Erena’s former member Addy gave her information on a label holding auditions, a bit impulsively she auditioned. She joined Mindmix debuting in Bad Girls Club two years later.

At school she was the youngest of her grade, at home she was the youngest child and cousin, and when becoming a trainee she was the youngest of her teams majority of the time. The girl always wanted to feel more grown up, she felt as if everyone treated her like a child and she hated it. Despite this, she was quite childish, and hard to treat like an adult. The girl was immature, she was naive and often times referred to as ‘too nice for her own good.’ Her talent in dance lead her to try auditioning for Mindmix, her family disapproved of the idea but told her it was her choice. They became hostile when she began training, and soon she just stopped trying to talk to them for her own sake. Her debut in Bad Girls Club was anticipated due to her participation on Girls Planet 999, and was not surprising, as many fans loved her on Bad Girl Academy and her talents were never overlooked!

I know I know....but can you imagine what Tae could achieve if his company promoted him in the west? I mean the man blew up the internet on the regular just by setting foot on US soil.
You cannot tell me this isn't intentional. A company as money hungry as BH doesn't just give up potential profit unless it conflicts with their larger plans.
To be clear, I don't think it's necessarily competition for JK or even JM. They are doing totally different things with their music and their approach. Do I think BH wants JK as the sole global star? Absolutely. I think they give JM a bit of western exposure because 1) they don't see it as competition and 2) it supports the Official Ship. I think Tae complicates that both in his unwillingness to toe the company line and the natural gravitational pull he has as a soloist and with JK (and honestly even with JM). It's JKK Goes West.
I also don't think they know what to do with Tae's approach. JK is classic pop star. They pull out all the 90s/00s influences. JM is classic K-pop. Tae is full body gold sequins in a cave in Spain. Or he's Peter Pan on his magical mystery ship. Or he's staging the biggest, queerest make out in London. It's why he continues to go outside of the BH inner circle and create his own team to realize his vision. But at the end of the day, promo still comes back to the company and it limits him.
BH (specifically BPD) is profoundly limited in approach and creativity. They are stuck in these old models and can't think how they could (and should want to) promote multiple artists on different, individual tracks.
I still think it’s because of his individual contract. I know I bring this up weekly, but seeing how things are, it’s just obvious that something is up. When the drop of a song with an independent artist is ten times smoother of when the company of the biggest group in the world drops it instead, you know there is something fundamentally wrong in there.
I don’t think it has to do with genre, Jm is not exactly pure pop, and Taehyung does R&B, which is a wildly popular genre (even though the fandom wanna convince you it’s not). Yg got good promo too guys, like Yg got insanely good promo, Nj had a chance there too, Hobi as well, Sj performed with Coldplay, they all had something except for him. It’s mind blowing for me.

"WHO ARE TWIST? - DAZED KOREA ISSUE VOL.1 (OCT 2016)
"One twist for ya mind, one twist for ya soul! Hello, We are Twist!"
TWIST Discuss DEBUT SINGLES 'ATTENTION' and 'WOW THING' & THE MEANING OF TWIST.
TWIST entered the K-pop scene with a fresh and exciting energy, debuting with double title tracks 'Attention' and 'Wow Thing', who both cite influences from 2000s pop and 90s R&B music, Twist make sure to command the public's attention and let the people know that they are here.
On the afternoon of October 1, 2016, TWIST had a magazine interview with Dazed Korea, their first-ever interview, TWIST open up to Dazed regarding their massive debut success, the meaning of the group's name, and where they want to go next.
It's been a month since your debut and you have already received two number ones on Gaon as well as your first music-show win! Did you think you this would happen so quickly?
Mina: We come from a small independent label such as JYL Records, so it is very surprising to us that the public even found out about Twist so quickly. We are very grateful for the public's reception to the music!
Sohye: It feels like a dream. To suddenly go from being a trainee and preparing for your debut for year 3 years to basically overnight success is such a new feeling. When you're in the trainee phase, you're met with many ups and downs to the point where you even doubt if you want to continue... In the end, you realize that your hard work paid off.
Your debut single album, ATTENTION, captures the essence of girl crush as well as a very powerful and intimidating image. As a group, many of you were involved in the creative process. Would this be a proper introduction to TWIST in your eyes?
Chaeyoung: I usually put my hand in the writing and composing of the music, whereas Mina will write occasionally, Hyerim also writes and produces, and both Sohye and Hyerim will come up with the image and creative direction for the music after hearing a final base of it. After careful consideration between multiple tracks, we believed that this is indeed the best introduction to TWIST.
Sohye: Chaeyoung's our main producer of the group in terms of members. She's extremely talented, especially when you learn that she's been composing music since the mere age of 12. I think Chaeyoung did a wonderful job and capturing the sound of TWIST.
Mina: For 'WOW THING', Hyerim was the main producer and that song is personally my favorite out of the three we've released. Hyerim's musical ear is interesting. She made the single by analyzing our personalities just immediately after a week in training back in 2015.
Hyerim: To continue from Mina, I made the instrumental for 'WOW THING' after watching Bratz. This was back when I was a trainee at JYL, I was quite a new trainee, but I had been partnered with these three for the group's lineup and I had made the song after being with them for a week. 'WOW THING' showcases the dynamic and different levels of how TWIST can be.
You work extremely well as a team. How did the four of you become a team?
Mina: It's been 3-4 years of me with Sohye and Chaeyoung, however, as a group, it's been one year of us four together. I meshed really well with Sohye and Chaeyoung in our trainee days, and as of 2015, Jiyeon Lee told us she found someone that would be an interesting addition to the group. Thus, we met Hyerim. Hyerim added the ace feeling that we wanted in the group.
Hyerim: I was only a trainee for a year, but I wasn't supposed to be a trainee at JYL Records. I had originally auditioned for YG Entertainment and ended up in first place, however, Jiyeon Lee actually snatched me! She gave me a tour of JYL and let me watch trainees perform and this is how I came across these three! They were performing "Survivor" by Destiny's Child and I immediately wanted to join them!
Speaking of dynamic and the versatility of TWIST, how would you describe the three songs you've released so far?
Mina: Attention is our debut single, we basically come out the gate demanding attention from the public and peers. It has a very sweet 2000s pop sound to it, and I would liken it to being inspired by Cassie's "Me & U". The choreography, made by Hyerim and Sohye, was made with the intention of being mesmerizing and give a vibe of cheerleading. This song is meant to show our dancing abilities!
Hyerim: Our double debut single, or title track, Wow Thing, has a more R&B sound to it. I previously mentioned making it after watching Bratz, however, musically, I was inspired by a Christina Aguilera track. We showcase our powerful vocals here compared to the other two tracks on the single release. I made sure that the public would know that we can sing.
Chaeyoung: Uh-Oh, the bside of the album, is an ode to 1990s hip hop. I specifically referenced the boom bap side genre with this track. While 'WOW THING' shows the vocals of TWIST, Uh Oh is meant to showcase the rap skills of TWIST.
Sohye: I came up with the overall concept of 'Uh Oh' as a response to the people in my life who didn't believe in me and had doubts of me becoming an idol. However, Chaeyoung helped put my vision to life as I'm currently working on my writing skills.
What does TWIST mean? What are your fans called?
Mina: TWIST means we can do any genre, any sound, any concept, any image by putting a twist to it. We each have individual charms that contribute to the music. We each have an input on the creative process whether its composing or coming up with the concept. We're simply putting our twist on things.
Hyerim: As for our fans, we were considering TWISTERS... but that is absolutely corny. I had to beg the members to not go for that. However, I came up with NADOS. Representing the tornado that is TWIST storming into the industry!
Sohye: That happens to be less corny. But I will add to the possibility of our fanbase becoming huge to the point where their power is equivalent to a tornado.
Would you say you have musical influences?
Chaeyoung: I feel as it may be impossible for someone to not be inspired or influenced by another act. However, I would say as a group, we look to 2NE1 for the goal of being strong of stage like them.
Hyerim: Vocally, I would love to have harmonies like Destiny's Child. I want us to be a vocal force.
Sohye: Individually, I am influenced by The Spice Girls. Each member had a specific charm to them that was quite different from the other, however, they didn't contrast or clash.
Mina: Mariah Carey's songwriting abilities and musical ear is something I would love for us to be likened too.
What are your plans after this?
Mina: Surprising fact, we do have another release planned before the end of the year! We also plan to do more promos and try to get the public to see us more. As of now, we have a couple variety shows lined up.
Do you have any words for your fans and the future ones to come?
Mina: Firstly, thank you Dazed, for having us. We're very thankful for our fans and we will work harder to show many sides of ourselves.
Sohye: I'm thankful for your immediate interest in us and I hope you stay.
Hyerim: I'm very excited for the future to come! I'm grateful for everything that has happened! May we continue to develop from here.
Chaeyoung: For our next release, we will promise to continue to raise the expectations of NADOS. We are grateful for your love.

Build Up Episode 6 Recap Part 3: Team Mismatch v. Team Maknae
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Welcome back to the recap series that follows ALL the rabbit holes: BPR Unnie recaps MNET’s Build Up! In the previous post, we saw a team with not great teamwork lose to a team that had not great rhythm. In tonight’s scintillating tale, we’re going to see a team of maknae (youngest members of the show) take on a team that includes people of all different ages. We’re going to lose one of the teams, and it’s going to be sad no matter what, so… let’s face the music.
Dahee calls the next two teams up on stage. It’s Team Mismatch versus Team Maknae. (These are my names for the teams, but you have to admit, they’re good names.)
Team Mismatch:
Tumblr media
Left to right: Geonu, Seohyung, Soomin
In the previous round, Geonu and Soomin performed Don’t Forget and came in 7th place; new recruit Kim Seohyung performed I Don’t Love You with Hong Seongjun of BDC, and lost to Geonu and Soomin. Hong Seongjun was eliminated, unfortunately.
You might remember Geonu as the one who used to have light pink hair. He’s on Just B with Bain. You might remember Chicago’s own Soomin as the one who sang “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” in the vocal check in. And you might remember Kim Seohyung as just being a kind of lovable weirdo with a surprisingly deep voice and a sort of stiff, formal manner despite his relatively young age.
Tumblr media
Left to right: Yeonwoo, Yunseo, Joohee
In the previous round, Ji Yeonwoo and Jeong Yunseo performed The Little Prince and came in 8th place; new recruit Park Joohee performed performed The Moon with Kwon Euibin, and lost. Euibin was eliminated, unfortunately.
You may remember Yeonwoo as the one who forgot the words to a Mamamoo song in front of Solar even though he’s from her agency. He certainly remembers, I’m sure. You may remember Joohee as the one who cried at the end of his song in the 2x2 mission and couldn’t sing. Meanwhile, Driver Yunseo is the hero of the maknae team, determined and confident no matter what.
Tumblr media
Seeing the two teams onstage, the guys in the green room say the two teams look like villains and “a traffic light.” The judges think that Joohee looks like he’s wearing his dad’s clothes -- I think it’s his loose white pants that give that impression. He also looks terrified.
Tumblr media
Team Maknae introduces themselves as “The Youngest Musicians” and do some anime poses. It’s cyooo!
Soomin from the other team immediately pipes up to point out that he’s the same age as the guys in Team Maknae.
The judges ask Joohee how he’s doing, and he says he has decided to be cooler this time. Well, I hope so.
Then Team Mismatch introduces themselves as “Taco Trio”  because they ate Mexican food whenever they practiced and each had different favorite dishes -- tacos, quesadillas, and burritos. “Just like we like various dishes,” Seohyung says, “we want to show our diverse charms on stage.”
Dahee encourages the teams to smack talk, and they do, and it’s whatever.
We head into the flashback, picking up with the moment when Yunseo and Yeonwoo recruited Joohee. Joohee was really happy to be on a team with his fellow maknae (youngest) and is looking for a song that will go with their image.
They’ve decided on Nakka by Akmu.
If you don’t know Akmu, they’re a brother-sister duo with undeniable talent signed to YG. They’re not really idols; brother Chankhyuk writes their songs and sings on them, and sister Suhyun might have the single most beautiful voice in all of pop, both kpop and western pop. They’re super popular in Korea, and are called things like “The Nation’s Siblings.” They’re also my fella’s favorite Korean-based musical act by a wide margin. He full on just listens to Akmu.
If you want to get to know them a bit, you can check out Suhyun’s solo song Alien, which is probably her most “idol”-like moment. I already mentioned her performance in Hopeless Romantic in the previous post. And then from Akmu themselves there’s always Dinosaur.
Anyway, I actually hadn’t heard Nakka before but it’s great. A collab with IU? Of course I’m on board. It seems to be about taking a leap of faith when you’re in a good relationship….? I’ll let you be the judge. Joohee says that the song represents closing your eyes and sort of letting go and being courageous.
Driver Yunseo says that he thought the song might be a bit monotonous without some form of performance/dance, so they decide to add some movement. They want to provoke feelings, so they… wear sunglasses? Ok.
Tumblr media
They’re rehearsing in a room at Mystic Story, which is Jeong Yunseo’s agency. (Mystic Story is home to Lucy, a boy band, and Billlie, a girl group.) They talk a bit about how they have a chingoo on the opposing team. And again, the subtitles translate “chingoo” as friend, so in the subtitles they’re saying things like “We can’t lose to a friend!” But of course, as you know, chingoo *can* mean friend but it also can mean “someone the same age.” Ok, cool, we’re good.
They’re at some sort of interim evaluation and see their rivals, so they decide to visit them and see… I don’t know, what they’re up to?
Tumblr media
Geonu is up to wearing that hat, so, that’s good.
Driver Yunseo asks, “Is there anything you guys can do better than us?” And I mean, what did he think they’d say back to that? Geonu, reasonably, says, “What do YOU think? I mean, honestly, I do everything well.” It’s so odd -- did Yunseo think the other team would be like, “Actually, we’re bad singers, so you should win”? Soomin says, “In a way, everyone on our team has debuted. We’re pros, and you’re amateurs.” I don’t know if that’s entirely accurate, but I guess it’s true that Seohyung has performed on stage, and I guess Soomin put out a single or something, so, sure. Anyway this whole scene makes me really uncomfortable and I’m glad when it’s over!
It’s performance day. Team Maknae turns their backs to the judges then turns back around wearing sunglasses.
Tumblr media
This isn’t as random as it might seem; when Akmu performed this song live on Sketchbook, they wore sunglasses too. I think they’re trying to look
The performance begins.
Full version without reactions.
My thoughts:
Aww, I really liked this. I think all three of them have great voices and they sound great together.
Tumblr media
Left to right: Yeowoo, Yunseo, Joohee
I think Yeonwoo might hold his eyes open like that to make them look bigger, but it just makes him look scared. I don’t think he actually was scared, though. He sounded great.
It’s funny, I don’t have as much to say about this performance as I do about performances I like less. They all have similar voices; all three have good breath control, no nasality, and an lovely natural vocal color. When they did that bit where they sort of echoed each other back and forth, it almost sounded like the same person singing over and over.
Joohee’s voice is my favorite of the three. It’s just the cleanest and prettiest, in my opinion. I think this is the best I’ve heard him sing this whole time.
Yeonwoo might be the weakest of the three but that’s a compliment to them, not an insult to him. He seems slightly uncomfortable on higher notes -- it’s an issue with agility, I think. He can hit them straight on, but having to hit them suddenly on a run is harder for him. Still, he’s a great singer.
Yunseo’s voice has the most texture, which adds a bit of interest to the trio. He also had that lovely long note with amazing dynamic control (ie, he controls his volume).
I loved the close harmony and almost-acappela moment toward the end. Nice work!
I’m not sure I *loved* the whole stylized, robotic movement thing they did, but it was cute and funny enough. They were doing a thing and it was a way to add interest without using up the breath they needed to sing.
I do worry that maybe the song wasn’t the best choice, just because it didn’t have the emotional resonance or engagement that some of the other songs have had….? But maybe that will work in their favor, helping them stand out in a group of serious, ponderous songs. Regardless, I’m cheering for them to win. I enjoyed this a lot.
In the MNET edit, the judges are laughing during their super serious “bada badas,” but then Joohee starts to sing and Eunkwang loses his SHIT.
Tumblr media
Every time the guys do the badabums in their action poses, everyone laughs -- but when they actually sing, everyone is like, “but they can really sing!”
We see Eunkwang the most, but it seems like everyone’s having a great time.
Tumblr media
Dahee loves it too!
The judges applaud without hesitation when the guys are done, and all theother  guys backstage cheer.
Wendy tells Joohee that when he started to sing at the beginning, she thought they were just playing the pre-recorded song. Fair -- that kid obviously ate the CD for breakfast. Eunkwang adds to the praise, saying that Joohee was like an uncut gemstone that has now become polished.
Eunkwang also praises the teamwork and staging, saying that it made everything fun and light.
Guest Judge Guy -- whose name I never remember so I’ll just have to call him Guest Judge Guy and you’ll just have to make your peace with that -- says, “You were so charming that I thought, ‘I could even become a fan if it’s a team like this.’” Me too, GJG! Me too!
That’s about all the feedback we hear, and then it’s time for Team Mismatch!
Tumblr media
Everyone’s interested to see what the “bad guys” are going to do.
The judges wonder about this combination -- Seohyung seems to be an odd choice to add to the duo of Soomin and Geonu. They had had to choose among Seohyung, Joohee, Gwangseok, and Woong, and I’m not sure if there’s anyone they’d prefer to that.. I think Soomin didn’t want to work with Joohee -- he seems to look down on the young trainees, kind of like, I don’t know, like he’s too good to work with them? I don’t mean to be so negative about Soomin but I’ve been open about how he rubs me the wrong way, so at least I’m not pretending I’m totally objective here.. I also think Soomin wouldn’t have wanted to work with Woong -- the two of them worked together on Ditto and I didn’t sense much camaraderie on the team. I think Gwangseok’s voice wouldn’t mesh well at all with Soomin and Geonu’s lighter tones. So it kind of had to be Seohyung. And a bass voice could add a lot of interest to any team, right?
The judges ask Seohyung how he feels about singing the song the team is going to sing, and he says cheerfully that he’s never sung in this genre before, but that since the song is called Joker, he’s going to be a Joker in this performance. Love that! Imagine, just saying to your teammates, “Ok, I haven’t done this genre before, but I’m ready to try.”  IMAGINE THAT!
We head into the flashback and see Geonu and Soomin entering the Small Room of Serious Decisions, muttering to themselves, “I hope he’s still there!” And quite to everyone’s surprise, they seem to be enthusiastically interested in Kim Seohyung.
Tumblr media
I had assumed that they’d chosen via process of elimination -- that they didn’t want a trainee like Joohee, a low tier like Woong, or a strong, uncontrolled voice like Gwangseok’s. But nope, seems like they really wanted Seohyung, or at least are doing a good job of pretending that they did. Good for them either way.
Seohyung is like, “I can’t believe the ‘Chicago baby’ wants me!” (He says “Chicago baby” in English -- pretty funny.) When he runs into them in the hall, Geonu says in Korean, “We chose you!” and Seohyung replies in good-sounding English, “Seriously?!?”
We get a little flashback montage showing how high energy Geonu and Soomin are, and how calm and polite Seohyung is. I think my favorite is him bumping into a door and then saying thank you to it. Also we’re reminded that he likes to watch car documentaries. WHAT ARE CAR DOCUMENTARIES???
Tumblr media
(The Korean letters phonetically spell out the English words “Welcome, my bro.” Also: s w e a t e r spotting)
The guys meet up to plan and rehearse, and Geonu and Soomin reveal that they already had a song in mind: Joker by Big Naughty.
Ok, Big Naughty is the guy who sang Hopeless Romantic, which we’ve talked about a few times -- the song that guest starred the female half of Akmu (who sang Nakka). Big Naughty’s song Joker features Jamie, formerly known as Jimin Park, who you might know for being a host/personality on a lot of Korean shows, or for her song 3D Woman or maybe April Fools (two awesome songs). She finally got out of JYP’s basement and she’s out and about now!
Joker seems to be about that tension between wanting to have a sincere, genuine relationship with someone, where you let down your guard, and wanting to protect your heart and keep things light. It has a light, sort of jazzy sound that reminds me a lot of And July by Heize and Dean.
So yeah, Soomin and Geonu tell Seohyung about the song they’ve picked, and he says he’s never heard it. Of course he hasn’t. It’s not a car documentary. Geonu explains that he thinks this will help all of them by letting them show something new but also use their talents.
Seohyung interviews, “I contemplated the situation momentarily. Truly, singing a ballad would be easier, but if I were to do so, how would improvement be possible?” See, that’s my guy. He tells the duo that he’s ready to try it -- “use me as a joker,” he says. Soomin challenges him to try smack talk, and he says, in English:  “....… Babies! …. We… we go to the next round!” That’s about all he can do, but it’s great.
Tumblr media
Then they decide they have to make a handshake and help Seohyung develop a “vibe.” I think they’re having fun and getting to be friends. It’s cute.
Cutting back to performance day, the judges are like, I can’t imagine Seohyung singing this song. I can’t either, but that’s mainly because Nakka by Akmu is so firmly stuck in my head that I can’t remember how any other songs go until/unless I listen to another one.
The performance begins.
Full version without reactions.
Tumblr media
My thoughts:
Overall, really great, mainly because of Soomin and Seohyung.
Tumblr media
I wish that Soomin had been entranced by Woong or Bain instead of Geonu, who I think has one of the weakest voices on the show. I really don’t want to feel that way, since Geonu and Bain are in the same group and I want that group to be successful, but I can’t help how I feel --  that Geonu is vastly outshined by nearly every other vocalist on this show. His voice is very nasal, he’s often a bit off key, his high notes are strained and shrill sounding, and he lacks breath support on longer notes. He also is awkward in his movements, the way he kind of jerks around as if he’s semi-dancing.
Geonu’s deficiencies are highlighted by how lovely and sweet Soomin’s voice is. He also has a nice spoken tone that gives warmth to his rapping. I don’t have much to say about Soomin’s performance because it was just sort of universally good.
Tumblr media
Seohyung surprised me, and I bet he surprised the judges, with how well he did here.  I’m calling it now -- they’re going to do an instant replay of his little growl at the 1:35 mark. His high notes sounded supported, and his deep notes were really satisfying.
I’m a bit on the fence about the arrangement and staging.  I love the idea of giving Seohyung the majority of Jamie’s lines, and having him sing them down an octave, so you have a bass coming in instead of an alto. Fun idea. But it did mean that Seohyung hung back for the first third of a three minute performance. I guess we’ll see what the judges think of that. I also wish there’d been more harmonies -- there are only maybe 10-15 seconds total where they’re singing in 3-part harmony. I would have liked to hear more.
If I had to guess, I would assume the judges will give this round to Soomin’s team, if for no other reason than I’ve noticed that Korean judges tend to just sort of prefer awarding wins to older people. It’s a weird sort of age discrimination, where they are indulgent to young people, but also habitually prefer older people. I’m not convinced that Soomin’s team actually did better, though.
In a fight between Soomin and Joohee, I’d say it’s a dead heat.
In a fight between Yunseo and Seohyung, also, a dead heat.
In a fight between Yeonwoo and Geonu, I choose Yeonwoo, no question.
Judging based on team synergy and harmonies, I’d choose the maknae’s team.
So yeah, I’d give the win to the maknae, but I still think the judges are going to give it to Soomin’s team. Let’s see what happens….
Tumblr media
In the MNET edit, naturally, we get a lot of reactions to Soomin’s first few notes. And of course, when Seohyung starts to sing, the judges are delighted too.
Tumblr media
Ah, I was wrong, there’s no instant replay of Seohyung’s growl, but we do see Wendy make this face:
Tumblr media
.. and we do get an instant replay of his lines “... so let’s just play the game.” Checks out.
After Geonu says “take a little nap,” he does this weird little dance and makes weird faces and it’s very like, IDK, your cousin dancing at a party when he’s high on shrooms and no one wants to tell him no music is playing. You know? Very that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Baekho’s face speaks for all of us, I think:
Tumblr media
When they’re done, of course everyone applauds.
Everyone is happy for Seohyung for trying something new and basically nailing it.
Best pals Jay and Wumuti do their best Seohyung deep-voice impression:
Tumblr media
It’s obviously very affectionate.
Dahee asks the judges what they thought. Jaehwan says that he got on his feet almost immediately for this performance. He says to all three, “your free, sexy, and fatal charms mesmerized me today,” then calls out Soomin for his excellent intro notes.
VCG praises the group’s teamwork and harmony, and then reminds Seohyung that he (VCG) had told Seohyung to change not his voice, but his expression and manner. And Seohyung did really well at doing just that. Also, his bass voice added a lot to a team with a high tenor like Geonu.
Guest Judge Guy praises Seohyung for tackling a new genre. Yeah!
Baekho tries his best to tell Geonu to stop dancing like a dorky weirdo. He says, “Geonu, I think you have everything you need -- but the image you’re trying to portray kind of ruined the performance in general.” We’re reminded that Geonu did the same kind of thing in the other two performances. Baekho says that if Geonu could just tone that down, he could win a lot of fans. Is anyone going to mention his pitchiness or nasality or lack of vocal agility….? Just me…? Ok…
So, it’s time to get both teams up on stage to find out their fate.
Tumblr media
The judges vote. Wendy notes that she might feel different if she’d heard the song in the opposite order. Not fair, then. Maybe watch a playback of both or something.
The results are revealed…
Tumblr media
Red is Soomin’s team, and blue is Team Maknae. Only Eunkwang voted for Team Maknae, so Soomin’s team wins.
Dahee asks the winners to say a few words, and Geonu basically says he feels bad about the fact that the losing team is being eliminated, but promises to keep up the good work. Driver Yunseo says they performed with no regrets and enjoyed working together, and hopes to meet everyone again in the future.
Tumblr media
They walk off stage together, and it looks as if Yunseo and Yeonwoo are both comforting Joohee. Aww.  Backstage, they say they’re a little sad that it’s over, but they aren’t crying. I think they were pretty much expecting to lose. Aww.
Well, I really want to see all of them again in the future, and I think we will. Yunseo is signed to Mystic Story and Yeonwoo is signed to RBW -- both good agencies. I don’t know where Joohee is signed, or if he’s signed at all. However, things often shuffle around after shows like this, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Kim Minseo from Bain’s team ends up debuting with some or all of Team Maknae here in the next year or two. Team Maknae, fighting!
Soomin’s team has a group hug backstage and vows to stick it out to the end.
And that brings us to the end of the round, and the end of this post! Thanks as always for being a friend! I'll see you in the next one.

u know jiwon can feel however way he wants esp since he constantly sees Team B banners and OT7 comments on his IG and he wants to nip that in the bud. but like there are much better ways to go about it “we’ve grown apart as of right now so a collaboration seems unlikely, sorry to disappoint” or “I know u guys wish for us to be together again but we are going on different paths. please stop with the OT7 and OT6 comments as they make us uncomfortable. ” like c’mon it’s not that hard. Jiwon’s only human he can feel negative feelings towards hanbin but sharing them online and pushing this harmful narrative of “hanbin doing weed cause his mental health was on a decline = he was a bad person” and “he chose to abandon us” (when he legit didn’t, YG terminated his contract and gave him zero support) when hanbin is already viewed so poorly in Korea for doing something that is morally fine in most places but not over there…it costs 0 dollars to keep ur mouth shut. ur words have consequences and hanbin’s been hurt enough.

post the full ranttttt all the ikonics on twitter are acting like he was looking out for hanbin which i get from some of his replies but the one where he’s like he abandoned us and i hated him like was that necessary?? lost all respect for him especially like why are u saying all this when YOU don’t know what a condom is
pointless rant under the cut!
Like YES in terms of hurting ikons reputation in kr hanbin does come no1 but bobby is a close 2nd so idk why he's running his mouth because when it comes to ikons success hanbin is also no1 and bobby no2 so...
I had such a chill California dude image of him on my mind and it was shattered turns out he has such traditional Korean values.... "bad example for future gen" over some weed like ok mr out of wedlock pregnancy.... like ive been defending him since the news broke out clearly idgaf but why are u acting like a puritarian now?!?!?
and to say he felt HATRED and follow it with "STOP THE WAR" now whta did he expect?!?! "i love him” but the way he was talking about him doesn’t sound like that at all
"he abandoned us" lets put our thinking caps on.... if hanbin hadnt been kicked out then what?? ikn 2 yr hiatus?? feel like their relationship wouldve gotten worse than now.... would he have been able to promote w them in kr?? also im still like 60% he was kicked out/ forced to leave
I think they’re still bitter about the whole situation and honestly I get it I feel that there were/is so many things against ikon and that they couldn’t reach their full potential like the fact that yg literally did the bare minimum for them and then as soon as they were getting the spotlight the drug scandal hit. I get it. But like he didn’t have to bring it up again at least for old times sake like they spent so much time together. Is true that this is all going to bring negative light on hanbin yet again like the drug scandal discourse comes up every 6 months
and like yes they also went through a lot when it all went down and honestly i understand why he just broke down or w.e cause apparently ikonics were fighting on his comment section and sending hate to hanbin and apparently there were team b banners at their latest concert for some damn reason and it hurt chanwoos feelings but then he just kept going like dude YOU CANT WRITE STFU he couldve just idk commented "hey dont spread hate were two separate entities now but still care for each other" or some bs like that like hes been a public figure for a decade now.....
also ids are being RABID on twt rn like wtf did he expect like he's never been good w words to begin with

Not the bc emperor anon but I found this on twitter

Interesting, in case the link gets deleted here are the images:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
bc emperor, is part of the legal team at CAA so is versed in legal language and this does sound very legal in tone. There is a suggestion the YG has gone rouge:
"Exporting a warning for YG management for their attempt to create unhealthy environment."
Though the language used is clearly not by someone who communicates massively in English. Yet this man is the sole international representative at CAA you'd think he'd b more capable of writing in English. Unless of course this was all originally in Arabic and translated using Google.
But still it's interesting.
UPDATE: It's actually from his insta story as of 8.40pm UK time 20.5.21.
So it is his own words so looks quite serious.

Movie Review #15
Review film walaupun sotoy: Avatar (The Way of Water)
Tumblr media
I recommend you all to watch this movie in 3D!
Nice work, James Cameron and team!! Oh tambahan, gua suka banget chemistry antara Lo'ak sama Payakan itu, warms my heart bgtbgt <3 <3
Segitu saja review singkat dari saya, pesan terakhir buat Jake please bgt iya semua tau tujuan lo mulia bgt, mau mewujudkan motto family stick together lo itu dan ga lupa mikirin keselamatan rakyat lo TAPI ya tolong bgt dipikirrrrrr ya mau ke manapun lo pergi selama itu msh di pandora ya lo bakal ttp diincer dan kesian org2 lain yang gatau apa2 jd repot bahkan rugi karna kehidupan mu yg nomaden itu bos :( OKE sekian review kali ini saya tutup dengan nasehat utk jake sully, tidak lupa pake hashtag #FamilyStickTogether biar kaya avatar xixixi
Happy watching~

Today’s Good Message/Quote/Insight:
