Everyone is selfish

This is a little Gravity Falls review-thing or whatever in response to some hate that I see for Mabel, which I find unfair. Unjustified hate strictly because she’s “selfish.” First of all, many characters in the show are selfish, so why treat Mabel like she’s some supervillain? She didn’t cause Weirdmageddon on purpose, she was outright manipulated by Bill posing as Blendin. She exhibited clear shock when Bill showed his true face. Her personal heaven, Mabeland, was yet another manipulation tactic to have her and Dipper separated. Bill knows what a powerful force the twins are together, so of course it works in his favor to have them taking two completely different pills. Even she realized that her bubble isn’t all it’s cracked up to be when finally listening to reason. “Have I really been listening to the same song for a week?”

Secondly, she’s a child, and kids are gonna be kids. Even Dipper is selfish many times, one of them being in Scary-oke. He’s quick to admit it was wrong to cause a zombie uprising just to prove a point to the government agents. I’ve seen some claim Mabel never apologizes, but she often does. It may take a little while, but upon reflection, she realizes her wrongs. People reflect differently.

Grunkle Stan is right up there in selfishness as well. One time that stood out was him trying to prove that one has to go through life demanding respect, resulting in them betting each other who’d run the Shack more efficiently. Mabel indeed learns that Stan has a point and that she needs to be more assertive, and Stan learns that kindness is a required trait. But at the end of the day, he still cares about them.

Gideon is selfish because he attempts to force Mabel to love him. He does it in the most creepish and awful ways, the worst trying to kill the twins. Ironically, it’s Dipper who convinces him to switch sides by telling him what he didn’t want to hear, but needed to hear: that he’s selfish for forcing his love on Mabel when she didn’t feel the same way. He even admits he was guilty of that with Wendy.

So that’s just it. Everyone is selfish, but what’s important is reflecting on those mistakes and offering an apology. No one is perfect, which is why I don’t understand the hate just because Mabel made mistakes.
