#MakeretiPapakura (also known as #MaggiePapkura), was born in 1873 in Matata, New Zealand. Her father was a #White #English shop owner and her mother was a high born #TeArawa woman. As a child she learned to speak #Māori and English. As a young woman she began working as a tour guide in a thermal springs area of Rotoura. It was here she gave herself the surname Papakura, after a geyser in the area. In 1901 she was the tour guide for the future British King George V and his wife, Queen Elizabeth (the current Queen's parents). Her popularity surged and she later published her own guide book. She then formed a musical group that travelled to London to perform. There she met and married Richard Staples-Browne. During WWI, Makereti and Richard sheltered injured New Zealand troops. In 1924 she began studying anthropology at Oxford and later wrote her thesis of Maori culture, specifically on Maori women.
