Felt like showing off the "redesigns" of the Grand Festival outfits that I did for my most recent Today's Work video. I just wanted to see how they'd look with some colors on 'em...and they are nice. ^^ Of course, if/when I do actual redesigns, they'll be a lot more effortful than this...
I've been enjoying the Grand Festival so far, I think. Walking around the grounds and listening to the concerts is surprisingly mesmerizing; they really nailed the ambiance. ^^ It was fun scrolling Twitter during my lunch break yesterday and watching everyone scream about the merch (that they can't have) and the idols (that they've already seen performing a million times before). ^^;;; If there's one defining feature of Splatoon's fanbase, I'd say it's unbridled joy and enthusiasm~.
I think it also goes to show that building an intricate, believable 3D environment can do a lot to make players feel immersed and included, even if they can't really interact with anything. The "Cheer" and "Bounce" etc. options are also great examples of 'a little goes a long way'; they're extremely cute. ^^ I wish we had them for earlier Splatfests...
There's just one little detail of this celebration that nags at me though, to be honest...Splatoon composers, blink twice if you need help. (⊙_⊙;;;)
When I realized that they did new arrangements for the concert performances, AND some of the in-game music, AND the victory and loss music...I began to feel something I call 'consumer's guilt'. :/
Like, of course we should get lots of special music for the Special final Splatfest, but it's been like this for the whole 2 years...special music for every holiday Splatfest, special music from the splatbands for the new seasons, random single drops from the idols throughout the year, dozens of tracks just for Side Order...considering the amount of time and effort that goes into composing and producing just one song it's hard for me to believe that they've had any time to rest, or even to just work at a reasonable pace.
It's only natural for this constant demand for content to take a toll on the quality of their work, and I feel that it has...interestingly, though, I feel the lowest-quality tracks are the earliest ones. '_' Like, splatoonwiki.org has a music page, where the music for each game is separated into sections...and the Multiplayer section for Splatoon 3 is the only one that I have no interest in opening. That is to say, the music we hear most often, while playing the main attraction of the game itself, is in my opinion 90% forgettable slop.
Back when the unofficial soundtrack first came out and I listened to the first 2 hours during a long commute, I remember being really disappointed that not even one C-Side song resonated with me...and the rest to follow weren't much better. To this day, every time some Splatoon battle music gets stuck in my head, it's always something from 1 or 2 (i.e. the games I never played ^^;) I can't even recall what 3's battle music sounds like on command...I hear it every day, and yet it all just slides right off my brain. Even the tracks from established splatbands...none of their 'new' stuff hits the same.
If I had to guess, the composers knew very far ahead of time all the stuff they would have to do, and decided to rush through the generic squid-rock to focus on the interesting stuff. If I had both Deep Cut's and C-Side's music on my schedule, I know which one I would want to devote the most time to. And if I had to develop a totally new sound for Free Association (the entity responsible for the music in Side Order, reflecting its surreal techno-industrial vibes) and H2Whoa (a random new splatband that only exists to ring in Drizzle Season 2023) I know which project would be more interesting to me, and inspire more creative choices.
...In a perfect world, though, ALL the music could be of similar quality and creativity, because they wouldn't have to make so much so often! >_< I mean, I know music is central to Splatoon's identity (it's what got me into the series in the first place) but I feel like things are getting out of hand...something about this constant deluge of new music doesn't feel sustainable. I've seen composer burnout before, and because music is so important to this franchise, I'd hate to see it happen here...

top 5 albums of 2023 your followers need to listen to
Ooh I love this question, ty 🖤
My top 5 albums of 2023 that I want everyone to listen to, tentatively (since there's a LOT, lol), and I know I've already talked high praise of many of these lol, are...
Lead Into Gold -- The Eternal Present. I've gushed endlessly about this album, but my adoration for it cannot be understated. Paul Barker outdid himself; he's been responsible for and/or involved in some of my favorite projects of all time long before now, but admittedly it was this album that really made me reevaluate how much I've almost taken for granted his artistry. It is such a lovely, uniform piece of art from beginning to end, I could go on and on about how excited I am by the composition, but I'll just leave it at: It is an AMAZING piece of modern electroindustrial from one of the legends of the genre and it is worth a listen. Song recommendation: "The Final Blows."
IAMX -- Fault Lines1. IAMX has been one of my favorite artists since, like, 9th grade, but this is another case of IMO an artist completely outdoing themselves. Chris is an amazing musician but Fault Lines takes things up a notch IMO with a whole new level of heaviness and intensity, experimentation, masterful modular synth work, vocal expertise, and the dark, sensual theatricality he's so iconic for. I seriously think this album potentially ushers in a whole new era for him, it's PHENOMENAL and I think everybody should check it out. It's technically an EP, so it only takes like 30 minutes to get through. Song recommendation: "Disciple."
DIN -- Up. Something more obscure, love for local icons in the LA scene. Greg Vand is the second member of High Functioning Flesh and this is his project with his wife Josie. I love their work and I think "Up" is so delightful; it's got a weird, dreamy, dancey electronic feel that alternates between synthpop and something more techno/house. I really love this release and I really loved getting to be there for the release party, too. Heavily encourage checking it out if you're looking for brand new music from a smaller artist who really deserves the attention. Song recommendation: "Try."
Male Tears -- KRYPT. A culmination of the past year or so of dancefloor hit singles, "Krypt" comes together as this extremely explosive gothic darkwave / alt synthpop / EBM blend that just so successfully captures the Los Angeles dark alt scene right now. I think everyone should listen to this album, it's so strong and so fun and just totally to die for. Song recommendation: "SLEEP 4EVER."
Sextile -- Push. Sorry for being from LA and for loving electronic music, but "Push" was suuuuuch a standout release for me. Unabashed party music, blend of a sort of throwback 90s/2000s sound while still being very fresh and very clearly stemming from the dark electronic scene, I love the amount of genre bending that Sextile did here. Inspiration from EDM and rave / house music, electropunk, classic EBM, trip hop, drum and bass, just such a love letter to doing lots of drugs while dancing with strangers. Song recommendation: "Plastic."
There was SO MUCH good music in 2023 and I feel a little bad not diversifying the genres more here, but what can I say 🤷‍♂️ I love weird electronic music it cannot be helped.

A-T-4 005 Manuel Göttsching - E2-E4
Tumblr media
I'm going straight in with what is probably the most enduring and influential pieces of electronic ambient music of 1984. Of all of Manuel Göttsching's compositions E2-E4 was one that has crossed over to fans of Dub Reggae, Disco, Prog Rock, Techno, Vapour Wave, and a many more musical styles
Any nerd will tell you it was recorded in December 1981 but it didn't see a release date until 1984. E2-E4 is a performance recorded for himself in a single take one December evening. Its intention was to help Göttsching wind down from a recent long tour. "“I was flying to Hamburg the next day and I thought I’d record something to listen to on my Walkman during the flight,” says Göttsching. The piece was improvised and entirely in the moment."[2]  There was something about the recording that he couldn't just shelve alongside the many other tapes he'd made for this purpose over the years, he knew he'd hit on something different and special. In interviews from the late 2010s Göttsching continually highlights his delight at how well the recording had come out from a technical point of view. When a friend said he would love to release something by him on their new independent record label E2-E4 was ready to go. Göttsching was a key member of Ash Ra Tempel and he released solo work as Ashra he decided not to do that with E2-E4 and for the first time puts something out under his own name
The initial reaction in Berlin was negative, it was described as "muzak"[2]. In a 2019 interview with LoudAnd Quiet, Göttsching said "“The newspapers said I have not understood anything in the modern developments of electronic music,” Göttsching says of the initial reactions from Germany. “They said I should better listen to Depeche Mode.” The Berlin Magazine apologised to Göttsching a decade later, saying they probably made a big mistake."[1] Luckily E2-E4 was picked up by djs in New York, all articles point at Larry Levan introducing it into the New York club scene of the 1980s. “I was a bit surprised people were actually dancing to it,” says Göttsching now. “I didn’t record it in the sense of a dance piece. The drums were very in the background, and it’s not really a ‘bom bom bom’ bass”[1]
Like many people I first heard E2-E4 when it was used as the backbone of 1989 italo house classic Sueno Latino. It was hidden in plain sight as Balearic Mike discovers "One early Italian pressing [of Sueno Latino] on DFC even names the track, E2-E4"[3]
Manuel Göttsching died just over a-year-ago on December 4, 2022
Last year the supermarket chain ASDA did a range of homewares, duvets/bathmats/etc in a checkerboard with the same coffee and cream colour way that the sleeve of E2-E4 has, it reminded me of the record
It's a stunning piece of music. Hear it in its entirety below

Dove (mostly Dove/John ship) lore master post GOOOO
Things are subject to change ofc when I learn more about Shoreside and we're given more information with new episodes.
Tumblr media
General information ofc
She/they/he basically any! She's bigender so some days she leans toward a more masculine look or more feminine look. Gender at birth is ambiguous. I don't know where I lean. Both appeal to me and exist simultaneously. Shrodingers gender. Bisexual/pansexual :]
5 foot 5 inches tall (almost a foot shorter than John at 6'4")
She's 25 years old, birthday: 5/12/1998 (using the day I first ever talked about the concept of her, may 12th! 1998 since I asked when shoreside is set, and it's set in 2023, time just yknow catches up on you when you make things so in 2023 shes 25. John is 35 in 2023 so this makes him 10 years older than her)
She lives in Florida around the Daytona Beach area with her grandparents! I imagine she's originally from another state (coughs. Pennsylvania) but probably got sent down to Florida to be raised by her grandparents due to some shitty parent drama ofc.
She works in the local library with her grandmother. Does all the running around putting books away that the older librarians can't do. Outside of that she also helps her grandparents around the house. Very helpful woman. Does a lot of the yard work, puts up Christmas lights. She'd be unassumedly strong for how she looks imo.
Some of her hobbies include jogging, writing, drawing, reading, baking. Kind of asocial until you get to know her, then she's a silly fellow. Sarcastic by nature, but harmless. I named her after bleeding heart doves, and which bleeding heart can kind of be used to describe her. Very soft hearted and kind most of the time which can be detrimental lol. Lol. (Her working with John probably makes her morals more aligned with his overtime, changing her personality slightly to be more similar)
Uh. Random facts: She has really bad eyesight. Has an old fat orange cat actually named Garfield funnily enough. Shades of blue are her favorite colors. She smells sweet. Carries uh. A sketchbook, other miscellaneous note taking stuff. Always has candy on her hajfjsjdj favorite animals include ofc pigeons, cats, axolotls, snakes. Her music taste is very all over the place, she likes Frank Sinatra and other that era crooners thanks to her grandparents, while also enjoying hard rock music, metal, pop, some techno, punk. Her faaaavorite TV show is Twin Peaks. Good lord she can't shut up about it. Has a crush on Dale Cooper.
Rest under cut for length reasons. Some shoreside spoilers.
In 2011, when the massacre happened and pieces of people were washing up on beaches, Dove was ~13 at the time and remembers seeing that shit in person on the beaches of Daytona, and all over the news. Traumatizing! But puts a want to understand what's Going On till adulthood. Probably has a phobia about the ocean! Hahaha:)
I've been playing with the idea of maybe doves grandparents being involved in the house club? But I don't think they would be!
when she hits adulthood, and specifically in her 20s, she puts effort into researching this shit in her free time.
(A lot of this is speculation and not knowing shit after this)
The first time she meets John Gein (outside of seeing him on the TV back in 2011 when he used to work for CNN) in person, I'm sure it was because she was probably trespassing somewhere she shouldn't be while he was investigating the area simultaneously where he runs into her. First it's of course all suspicion and you can't be here, and he kicks her out.
She being the stubborn woman she is, she keeps showing up and keeps having run-ins with John who, out of some begrudging admiration for her dedication to discover things, reluctantly lets her begin helping him with the shit he's more interested in, and not the goals of the company he's working for.
(He's both relieved and annoyed that Dove doesn't want payment. Yaay he doesn't have to pay her and ugh. Unpaid labor. That's okay John the only thing she wants is you to pay for both of you when you go out to eat and discuss the things you've discovered)
They probably met and began this whole thing maybe a couple years before the events in 2023, maybe 2020 idk? She'd be just out of college. At first they're just uneasy acquaintances, but eventually as they continue working together, they become friends (as they grow closer you just KNOW dove is sending him silly memes. The more weird the better), the two warming up to each other. They both greatly appreciate each other and enjoy being in the other's company, at some point both crossing a "i have romantic feelings for you but neither of us have admitted this yet" threshold where their friendship holds a more tender feeling, where they begin sharing drinks ("one large strawberry milkshake please. No we don't need two, just one for the two of us please! :]") and what not.
Everyone assumes they're dating at this point. They're not yet, but ofc dove gets teased relentlessly by her grandparents. ("Ooohhh Doveee your boyfriend is here!!" "He's not- not my boyfriend." cue very amused John look. "Oh make sure you're being safe and protected!" Wink wink nudge. "MOM-MOM PLEASE.")
Do they love each other? Of course they do. I think it would inevitably be John to say he loves her first. He'd probably say it while she's panicking about something and being worried so he decides to like. Catch her off guard and get it off her mind via kissing her, which works! Works very well because sure enough she can only focus on him holding her, cupping her face and letting her know he loves her and not to worry about whatever she was freaking out about. Yaaaay entering the actually dating now era yippeeee
Cue them now actually doing couple things outside of their working together... John gifting her sweet things like flowers, candy. Gets her a little pigeon plushie because it reminded him of her. (That plush will now be cuddled to death when she sleeps alone bc of him jfjsjfjsj) Dove's grandparents would probably trust John so much they'd give him a key to their house to let himself in to see Dove whenever tbh. Sometimes he lets her know when he's coming, othertimes not so. Showing up while she's not expecting him and jumpscaring her a lot hahaha. I'm sure he finds it funny (he does). That's fine you keep jumpscaring her like that John, well fuck you get your hat STOLEN loser! Yoink! Ope girl now you're getting grabbed and hoisted into his arms and- ooohh they're cute together actually hehehe
Their relationship is very equal despite the 10 year age gap ("MYS THATS BAD" - they are two consenting adults. It's fine. 35 isn't old. Leave me alone), Dove, unfortunately, would probably be too dedicated to him even as he kind of becomes more uh. Crazy? Ig I can use that to describe it. Not seeing anything wrong with him harassing Noah Risse for answers, only kind of at least being mad at John's attitude toward Porter's and Bryan's deaths and John being fired for it, but being just as eager to get the information they want. Would definitely help him kill someone if she had to. Hah. (Idk why I enjoy the idea of him teaching her how to shoot his gun. Yknow. Just in case. No reason! :] )
Um. I don't know what else to add. If you read this and have questions about her feel free to reply/shoot me an ask.

selected albums ive listened to in 2024
this year I'm just posting the highlights so itll be shorter
[1] [2]
January
1/ VHS Head - Phasia (2023) first new album of '24 for me! "Strange Food" that zap pew beat is a delight! title track is p good, floaty. "Phocus" this is very vaguely leaning into…funk? i really like it. possible highlight? wondering why it shares the title of a different album.
---
4/ VA - FM Synth 2 (2017) yeah i love fm "Mach 5 Fusion Force X" is a god damn tour de force. insane! "Work Without Rules" second fav of mine for its smoov smoov swingy wobs
---
7/ Skee Mask - C (2024) first 2024 album in the list! dusty, crispy, chillout. analogue. deep bass when needed, never too thick of a presence. delightful chillout music. at worst, its a bit varied, as if it were an anthology. probably because it is. highlight: "Bassline Dub"
---
12/ (all OCRemix posts from 2017) all over the place ofc some insano selections: "Multi-track Drifting" N R G!!! "Big Room Gobi" funny but in a goes hard way also: Star Salzman's Katamari mix!!! i keep coming back to that in particular
----
15/ VA - Adventure Time, Vol. 1-5 (2019) they have extended versions of some sc cuts!! "Party With the Chief" esp(!) the biggest thing I noticed overall: this soundtrack is so…wack. meandering. ADHD in control of a quirky ensemble. continually amazed that this's from a hit show
---
16/ Diverse System - JAPAN 2 (2023) a mostly rly good grab bag of bangers with a japan flavor! i adore the koto mixed in with tight electric beats. big big standouts with "灯火" !!! and the much more electric "Amatsu"
---
17/ Patricia Taxxon - Bicycle (2024) laid back (mostly) textures n vibes. instant fav in "Frat Claws" and "I Do" specifically! i really like the FEEL within the sounds. i keep coming back to "Chipshop" and "Boys". visceral.
---
23/ Aleksi Perälä - Starlight 1 (2018) surprisingly solid, albeit a bit all over the place much love for the smooth sounds of "UK74R1823040" much love for the stepfiltered "UK74R1823090" not as much a fan of the techno flavors this time but still!
it's hard to recommend this artist in general but ive been listening to a lot of AP music. just give those two highlights a try and see what you think.
---
February
25/ BT - The Secret Language of Trees (2023) THE GOOD STUFF Producer's Cuts especially!!! "k-means clustering"……. the clicks in "Time Moves So Fast"…. if you ever wished ppl made more music from 2007, here it is. a return to the binary universe.
----
40/ Tom Bragl - Regainable (2024) a few crunchy niceities, but just a few imo. "Klamra" f.ex. feels very 2007, which IS a delight. for anyone who wishes they made more music from 2007. here it is. funny it's marketed as "80s esque" lol. i hear it tho.
----
43/ µ-ziq - 1977 (2023) mike has a very distinct style that stands out from a lot of his peers imo. i wasnt sure about this but the reverbed minimalist drum machine in tracks like "4am" and "Belt & Carpet" win me over. I think those two and the weirdly hazy house of "Houzz 13" are my favs. "4am" especially, with those ethereal (newage?) chopped vocals
----
44/ Autechre - 2005-4-15 Glasgow (live set) apparently there are some old soundboard recordings laying around!!! this is super good. quaristice stuff. i love love love the multiple variations of chence9! the fast version of IO is rly good too. ez fav but still.
----
March
47/ STAFFcirc vol. 9: MIDI MODULE FANATIX (2024) oh hell yes, midi AND rompler!!! "Thunder and Strawberry Wine" is otherworldly. i get how it was made but also. How? ooooghhh… "30 Domcaster St" delightful ooooghhh… "Cascade rev.2023" authentic zest "Yakumotatsu" god i love this trend of pushing msgs midi to the max "tunnel7_r35b" listen i love chimeratio and he brought his slapping
----
57/ Fields Of Mist - Biospore Farmers (2024) try not to compare to boc challenge: impossible. it's lush damnit. but the perc is way way more analogue drummachine. its wall to wall good. that opening track would have blown my mind in 2007. they dont make it like that anymore, except i guess they do!
----
60/ pilotredsun - Achievement (2016) an album misplaced in time. pristine early 00s bedroom musician vibes.

December 13, 2023
New financial plan! I'm going to start 2024 off by sticking ~15% into savings (most generalized, some goal-based) and investing 10% of my stipend each month into my down payment account (up from 5% and 1.5%, respectively). I've done the math based on my spending this first semester, and it checks out. Plan to meet with my (my dad's lol) financial advisor(?) over break and I'll see what they say.
I do think my Spotify Wrapped under-reported the amount of time I spent on vgm, especially in the last couple of months, as I've been using youtube "relaxing walk across..." and various themed music compilation videos recently while working (recently started on The Witcher 3 versions (after watching the skyrim one six or seven times hehe) which are new and fun!).
I think the way that my desire to take up and become good at dancing being at consistently odds with my stiff nature followed by shying away from it is reflective of something fundamental about me: I want to be more spontaneous than I am. Or maybe I want to be more comfortable when it comes to going with the flow. My whole life feels like one choreographed and blocked show with me moving stiffly between the defined beats. I want to add soul to it, to be better at life's "partner work" and improvisation. Detour off the path a bit and find my way back after having some fun. But I keep not being able to do it because I'm scared. Of what? Good question. Not in the mood to think too deep right now tbh. Maybe later.
I watched Skeppy's video about Techno. It was very sweet. I don't know why Techno's loss continues to hit me so hard. I had only watched his stuff for a few months, I don't even think I was officially subscribed. Maybe it's because he was my age. Maybe it's because he was so clever. Maybe I hate being reminded of how unfair life is. It's sad and scary and even a little anger-inducing.
I also watched hbomberguy's video on plagiarism and it was really good. Worth every second.
Today I'm thankful that there was an osteologist in the room with me while I took my measurements on human remains. I've handled countless animal remains and casts of human and fossil bones. But there was something a very eerie about handling the human remains. I remember telling students every term to treat all remains whether real or casts with respect, and I handle everything with so much respect. But it was still weird. So I'm thankful I wasn't alone (the experience was very different, and perhaps rightfully so, from when I was working with the non-human primates last week).
[edit: oh ya i also took my anatomy exam and i will not know peace until i get my final grade back]

[Main image description: An edited image of Elvira grinning in delight while a skeleton whispers into her ear. Elvira's face has been replaced with Garfield, keeping the hair, and her hand is now his paw. Her decolletage remains intact and is Garfield orange.]
Yay October! A month of many things, isn't it. But one of the things has to be a little spooky, just for vibes. Where we live the Santa Anas have blown in and it is dry as anything, and a perfect low 80s during the day to 70s at sunset (and it'll be VERY cold at night). It is fun, on our family discord, seeing folks share their snowy Halloweens.
Related media to some of the songs:
'The Rythmn of the Night' is beloved to me for multiple reasons but also for this perfect moment from a DJ.
I feel like I've been looking for the music videos I remember from back when you had basic cable and sometimes got free Disney for a week to entice you to subscribe (and my family spent it recording everything they could). They were pop songs, with videos that were just semi-related clips edited together into music videos. I only ever saw them individually, but apparently they're from DTV Monster Hits, which is available with commercials over on Archive.org. The Eurythmic's 'Sweet Dreams' is one of the videos I remember the most (it's the final number).
Speaking of seasonal music, Duran Duran has a new charming album out, Danse Macabre, and it's a fun mix of covers and new songs that is very much a Halloween party album.
Anyway here's a link to October's playlist on Spotify, with the track list below the cut.

Throwback: Bjork-Alarm Call
Tumblr media
Bjork's "Alarm Call" was inspired by her belief in music's power to change things. It was the fourth single from her third album, Homogenic. She wrote the words, and Mark Bell of the techno group LFO produced the song's New Jack Swing-ish beats. Bjork was seeking one style of music, which was the purpose of the Homogenic title, and she wanted to pay tribute to her native Iceland. The result was a mash of strings and dance beats as the dominant sound of the album. Alexander McQueen directed the second video for the song after Bjork was displeased with the first one shot by Paul White. The late designer gave her a 100-page treatment for the visual that has her on a raft in a jungle playing with wild animals. "Alarm Call" has several remixes, and the French one hit the Top Ten in the UK. Homogenic has become Bjork's most critically acclaimed album, and most fans believe it is her best work. The artist linked with singer-songwriter Rosalía to release "Help Fight Fish Farming In Iceland" in October of 2023 to raise money to pay legal fees for the people of Seyðisfjörður who are protesting industrial salmon farms.

Elevating the Soul with the new Single "Innerglow"
Stark D, the creative mastermind behind the album "Super Asymmetry," is back with his latest single, "Innerglow." The track features a high and progressive melody, followed by an impactful ethereal techno beat that is sure to elevate the soul of any listener.
"Innerglow" is a masterpiece of sound design, featuring synths and arps that weave together to create an enigmatic and mysterious ambience. The track is a fresh and groovy take on melodic techno, bringing together uplifting melodies and a solid beat that flows effortlessly throughout.
Stark D's previous works have been met with critical acclaim, with his album "Super Asymmetry" featuring 12 exclusive tracks that dive into deep tech and melodic techno.
Stark D's previous single, "Methodic," also received rave reviews, hitting the top 12 in the melodic house and techno category at Beatport. The track was a euphoric state of a static mind, bringing together groovy melodies and an ethereal vibe that captivated listeners.
His newest single, "Acromion," is a melodic progressive tune that takes listeners on a journey of self-control. Inspired by Stark D's own experience with a surgical procedure on his left shoulder, the track features prominent ethereal vibes and percussive vocal chops, which come together to create a beautiful harmony.
Stark D is a true master of sound design and a rising star in the world of melodic techno, and "Innerglow," is a testament to his creative genius and a must-listen for any fan of electronic music.

Weekly EDM Favorites 2023 - Week Three
Best of Week One: Can’t Say No - JJD: Not much to say about, it just hits in all the right ways.
Week three was kind of bad in terms of music. I had a pretty low amount of liked songs compared to the first two weeks, and I think a good portion of these wouldn’t by on this playlist most other weeks. Oh well. They can’t all be winners.
Against The Tide - Delta Heavy, Lauren L’aimant: One of my biggest points of growth in terms of music last year is that I like Drum’n’Bass more now. At first I didn’t like very much, but by the end of the year I would count two D’n’B tracks among my top ten, one of those being Ascend by Delta Heavy. This isn’t quite Ascend, but it’s very enjoyable. I love the little off-beat notes in the main melody.
Can’t Stop Us -  KAKA李奕可: Big Room isn’t looking too good in 2023, but as long as there are artists finding new ways to keep the sound interesting it will have some foothold. This isn’t anything groundbreaking, but it does well for a genre slowly being subsumed by techno. I hope we can keep things like this going forward.
Hollow - Dabin, Kai Wachi, Lø Spirit: Yeah, Can’t Stop Us didn’t stay as interesting on subsequent listens. I found Hollow a bit basic on first listen, but there’s some things that I appreciate more now. The first drop isn’t as impactful as I’d like, but it is emotional. And the second drop has its moments as well. The build-ups are pretty cool.
Leave Me Like This - Skrillex, Bobby Raps: Skrillex bass house works pretty well. This track isn’t all that flashy, but what it has it does extremely well. It has the production you would expect from Skrillex. I love the return of the speedstackinggirl sample.
The Other Side - Au5, Chime: This collaboration is everything one would expect to be. It’s explosive color bass from two of the biggest names in the subgenre. These two names command a lot of hype, and I was not disappointed.
Particles - Infowler: This track has me engaged from the first notes, and it stays at such a high level throughout. Everything about this just works, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it on my year-end playlist.
Try Again - Goodknight.: Goodknight.’s first NCS release, Freedom, was pretty underrated in my opinion. Sure it was simplistic, but what it did, it did well. This track does a lot more, but just as well. Goodknight.’s songwriting and production work together very well.
World’s On Fire - Afrojack & R3HAB vs Vion Korger VIP Remix: A good R3HAB track in 2023. Interesting. They can’t fool me with that title, though, I know the only good parts of this almost certainly came from Korger. I remembering listening to Space Journey from his last year and liking it, I’m guessing he did most of the work here.
Lost - Andrew A, VIANI: This keeps happening with future rave type tracks, where they just suddenly grow off me. Yeah, I guess this is another R3HAB miss. Lost has out-of-key vocals, which is kind of upsetting, but the sound design in the drop saves it. Don’t really have much more to say about it.
Follow the playlist here to hear all these tracks and previous weeks as well.

Song Analysis: Kylie Minogue’s “My Oh My” is a passable Frankenstein’s club bop wielding the artist’s recent hits and aging musical trends
Analysis by Clove Mera, 13 August 2024 Single released 11 July 2024 Track written by: Ina Wroldsen, Tove Lo, Steve Mac Liberator Music
Thanks to 2023’s viral hit “Padam Padam”, Kylie Minogue has been enjoying a level of visibility in the pop culture landscape which she hasn’t seen for decades, perhaps since 2001’s Fever and its breakout hit “Can’t Get You Out of my Head”. From the perspective of a lifetime fan of Kylie, I’m so excited to see the heightened success it has brought her, from a Vegas residency to her new music being visible on Apple Music playlists, and new single “My Oh My” reaching the peak of her Top Songs on the same platform. Releasing a single in July, ten months after album “Tension” is also astute timing, as it prolongs her momentum. In fact, she even performed the song with its featured fellow pop stars Bebe Rexha and Tove Lo to a crowd of 65,000 people at BST Hyde Park 2024, according to Left (2024).
The string like synths which lead the sparser more tranquil sections of the song possess a powerful, punchy, bass. They emerge pretty much right away, and truly they take proper advantage of a decently bassy speaker. The song knows that it wants to be heard in a club, where the bass is pounding, and a multi sensory experience does a lot of favours for the song.
Another asset to the song is its infusing of Minogue’s playful personality into the song’s lyrics. If you watch Minogue in any recent interview, you will shortly see how lighthearted her demeanour can be. Minogue, Rexha and Lo each perform a refrain similar in nature, transcribing a flirtatious exchange, with Minogue singing,“When you asked, "What's your name?”/ "What's your sign?" I'm Kylie, it's Gemini/ What's your drink? Let me buy/ You had me when you said, "Hi”/" followed with an actual spoken, “Hi”.
Lyrically, “My Oh My” is similar in concept to “Padam Padam” in two different ways. The stories told in either song are pretty much about seperate sides of one intimate relationship. Where “Padam Padam" was framed around the anticipation while meeting someone,  “And I can tell you how this ends (padam)/ I’ll be in your head all weekend (padam)”, the tapering flush of infatuation is explored in “My Oh My”,  “Yesterday was just a day/ I didn't know my life was gonna change/ Yesterday, light years away/ You came in here, now, nothing is the same.”  Something I regret is that certain imagery is very similar between the two songs. In the former she sings, “You keep me up at night/ La-la-la-la/ I’m feelin' fireflies” and in the latter she sings, “Shivers and butterflies (padam)/ I get the shivers when I look into your eyes (padam)”
This is part of the overall concerns I have about “My Oh My”. The track feels like a by-the-books attempt at crafting another successful hit, with its ingredients pulled from obvious references. Earlier, I mentioned Minogue’s massive hit “Can’t Get You Out of my Head”. It is not difficult to recognise the interpolated “La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la” refrain, even with its slower pace, higher pitch and heavy autotune effects.
The kicks in the chorus remind me of Tiësto’s moderately recent signature flare. For example, Tiësto’s 2021’s song “The Motto”, deploys a deep punchy bass as its leading danceable element. Typically bass is a subdued element, hidden yet a powerful presence in the soundscape. But Tiësto really subverted the way bass is programmed, with high cutoff, low attack and quick release, turning it into the main element like the lights in a laser show. Tiësto is one of the enduringly dominating names in techno music, and is often with or ahead of the curb on music trends. If Kylie’s team wanted Tiësto, why not hire him for a truly current beat?
But if this song is borrowing from the sound and subject matter of the recent Tension era - while being a seemingly seperate single with a dissonant visual aesthetic in the music video - then I am unable to gauge whether Kylie’s upcoming releases will be an extension of Tension or something new. The ambiguity makes it hard to get excited. Are we to anticipate something new, a pivot from country to disco to techno like we got with her previous three albums, or are we going to linger in the recent and successful sound of Tension?
With its similarity in musicality to 2023’s album Tension, and its dissonantly themed music video, it is difficult to gauge where “My Oh My” stands between her projects. Is it an after shock from the previous era, or an indication of what’s coming next? Am I to expect another genre shift, akin to the shift from country to disco to techno in Minogue’s previous three albums? A big contributing force in Kylie Minogue’s successful decades-spanning career is her ability to reinvent herself, and though I do enjoy “My Oh My”, I hope she doesn’t forget that lesson and remain chasing the high that “Padam Padam” gave her. All I know is, whatever Minogue does, I’ll listen to it.
“My Oh My” is available to stream, the music video is linked below

"I was born in a system,
That doesn't give a fuck about you, nor me, nor the life
Don't be a victim of things I do to survive
Because I won't wish you any good, you Babylonians…"
///

By accident I discovered a set of Promis3 at HÖR Berlin and was stunned: Within art there is a lot of average stuff, similar to already done things (which doesn't mean that it's bad!). But once and then there is art which is...different. Outstanding. It is a great gift to do such art.
Art can be strongly connected to a name, as the name is associated with the art. One of the greatest examples is the channel HATE on youtube, which connects and presents many art-pieces, including great videos for the music from KAS:ST or Hadone. I connect all of it strongly to the channels name, which is itself art – choosing a word for one of the strongest emotions we can have, being opposite to the widespread used love, which is often even thought of the ultimate sense of life.
What I love in addition is the great art of writting it. It is unexpectedly hard to find a certain style of writing letters in a new, expressive and fitting way. It is a great challenge – but I love to try, albeit usually not being satisfied in the end. But it's all about the try :-)
After scribbling a little bit I finally had an idea what could be done – not perfect, but at least at the limit of what I could do (okay, that's just another way of writing I ran out of ideas). The draft went from hard letters to a more soft writing to a finally quiet abstract one. I also decided to use colours, as the style of Promis3 is so diverse – melodies, interrupted by another breaking in bass track. Not to mention the style of clothing, the different ways both sing and so on. However, I also made a black-grey-white design after, using the "classical colours" fitting to heavy-hitting techno.
Overall, I think we are getting into abstract minimalistic art here...
Check out their set:
