Shooting Daniel Pearl’s Infamous Dolly Shot (From Pam’s POV) Or How I Got Lucky In Spite Of Myself.
When I came on the set that morning in Quick Hill, Texas, our make-up artist Dottie was repairing my make-up. I looked out of the corner of my left eye, over at the swing where I knew I was supposed to sit for our next scene of Pam approaching the house. Perplexed, I noticed Daniel Pearl, our cinematographer, lying down on his stomach, hunched over his camera, UNDER the swing, and exactly where I was soon to park my posterior. I noticed Danny wasn’t moving. He was settled in. I asked Dottie as she was powdering my face, “Hey, Dottie, what’s Daniel doing under the swing?” She mumbled something similar to “Idunno…”, and quickly walked away.
They told me they were ready and where I was to sit. Huh?? No way. Yes, the stories are true. I freaked out, 😱 Pam and Tobe began to argue, me refusing to do the shot. Meanwhile, and totally Unbeknownst to me, this was immediately following a giant argument he’d just had with the money dudes, the investors, who didn’t want him to do this new shot that Daniel had come up with the night before, at all. They were ranting at him, telling him that they HAD to stick to the storyboard. .. or else (btw, dpearldp tells that delicious story on his IG - link below). Well, I had No Clue what it was either. I was protecting my cheeks… if you read me. Chewing on his cigar stub, and none too happy with his troublesome actress playing ‘Pam’, Tobe had had enough and said, “Aw, goddamnit, Teri, we’re gonna shoot all around it!!!” Hmmmm, I’m thinkin’, ‘shoot-all-around-it’? Just what the hell does that mean? Anyway, I shut up and sat down, however, remaining highly, highly suspicious. I later learned that everyone, except me, was in on the tracking shot.
All I could think of was my mother 😲 O.M.G. (who was unsupportive at best of my chosen career) and my Aunt Gerry, who were both super-duper religious. I could literally picture them coming unglued when they saw it. Before it was released a year later, I dreaded watching myself on screen and THAT scene, having never seen dailies, I was haunted by the thought of watching it.
When it was released in October ’74, I was living in Dallas and drove with a friend to see it at a Saturday matinee in Tomball, TX, along with 300 screaming kids. When the scene started, my eyes were covered 🫣 I watched through my fingers, scared to death, and NOT of Leatherface. There, up on the screen, in CinemaScope and vivid Technicolor, were my cheeks in those red shorts… O.M.G. 🥶🥵
They certainly did "shoot all around it"!!! The irony of all my worry, neither one of them ever saw it. 😂
That scene has been taught in directing classes across the world for decades, and the 1974 film is held in the film archives of MoMA, The Smithsonian, and The Academy /Oscars.org.
MoMA recently announced a weeklong celebration the 50th anniversary of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre August 8-14, when members of the film’s creative team will join to discuss The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s production and legacy.
How fortunate we are.
As many of you know, I didn’t come out of anonymity as 'Pam for ’35 years, till March 2008, when, Bill ‘Kirk’ Vail and I both first appeared at a humongous Cherryhill, NJ, Monster-Mania Convention.
Cut to 2008 when my sweet Aunt Gerry was in her 90's, I went to visit her in Arkansas at her apartment in Peachtree Village for a few days, and I told her, "Aunt Gerry, did you know I'm famous?" She said, "You are??" I said, "I certainly am." 😎 I got out my Mac, opened it to FB and showed her the shot above. She giggled and smiled. She loved it! We enjoyed a really good laugh together.💞😂
Tobe and Kim had apparently seen my picture in the Austin American Statesman for a play I was doing with Frank Sutton (Gomer Pyle's Sargent) at @Mary Moody Northern Theater. Somehow for many years, I always remembered my eyes were closed in the Statesman picture. When I recently looked at the picture, my eyes were open and it was Frank Sutton's and the corpse of the dead priest that were closed. 😂 Kim Henkel had called the theater and our director, Ed Mangum, gave me the message when I came in for rehearsals that afternoon. I was to return their call.
WHO KNEW??? Certainly, none of us!
🎥 Follow our amazing cinematographer, Daniel Pearl's 50-year career in his posts and stories and get his POV on filming TCSM '74 scenes

Fatal Kiss (2002). I have been waiting for awhile to post this! Awhile back I bought the VHS for the short film Fatal Kiss directed and written by Jeff Rector. The film features Ted Raimi. This was considered lost media for quite awhile. I’m so happy to get to share it all with you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I currently have it in digital format and am gonna be uploading it to a drive link as well as potentially YouTube. Other places I may upload this will be the internet archive to preserve media. I should be posting it by tomorrow if not tonight:) Thank you all for having patience. Ted Raimi nation I see today as an absolute win for his lost media!
Tumblr media
Sorry Teddy that both Fatal Kiss and Fountains Clowns have been found (Although I think he was so good in Fountains Clowns. Still thinking about his chest tattoo they gave him.)

This is the very first original Scooby-Doo instrumental opening theme by Ted Nichols, before they switched it to the one we know. I do like this version, but it sets up a really eerie mood when played for the opening. It definitely fit the title card for each episode well though.

In Every Life - Part 2
Part 1 - In Every Life
Masterlist
It was the spring of 1914.  Grace’s parents received word 2 months before that her Aunt Rose had fallen ill, and help was needed to take care of her.  Uncle Ted would have hired someone, but they were barely making ends meet as it was, and cousin Albert was doing what he could to help his dad on the farm.  After a brief discussion, Grace volunteered to go take care of her aunt.  Loading her up with supplies, she left Colebrook early the next morning for Dartmoor.
When she arrived, she found Aunt Rose was worse than they realized.  Grace spent the next 2 months nursing her back to health while cooking, cleaning, and taking care of both her cousin and uncle.  There was never a moment where she regretted coming.  After all, she loved Aunt Rose dearly and knew her uncle was extremely lucky to marry her.
One lovely morning, Grace went into town, needing a nice walk and temporary get away from the farm.  She’d heard there were soldiers in town and would be there for a few weeks to train as there were rumors of a pending war, and England wanted to be ready.  She’d spotted a few here and there, but they seemed to be moving about.  Observing them, they appeared to be having a break from training and were getting some personal things done.  What those things were, she could not say.
Going through the merchant stalls, she saw one with a number of flowers including her favorite, the peony.  They were hard to find, especially lately, and she could not afford to purchase even one.
“That is a very beautiful flower, ma’am.”  The voice came from behind her, baritone and smooth as silk.  Slowly, she turned around to find a handsome soldier with blonde hair and blue eyes peering down at her.  Grace wondered for a moment if she was dreaming.
“I’m so sorry.  Forgive my impertinence.”  He took off his hat.  I’m Captain James Nicholls.”  He placed his hat on his chest and bowed to her.
James noticed her when she came into the market, mesmerized by her beauty.  It wasn’t until she stopped at the flower stall that he saw his chance and seized it.
She smiled at him.  “Grace Narracott,” she said as she curtsied.  “What brings you to town, Captain Nicholls?”
He smiled.  “James, please.  Major Stewart was gracious enough to give us a couple days off from training, and just about everyone is using it to get things to write to loved ones, stock up on banned items, and the like.”
She smiled at him.  “And what about you?  What are you doing with the free time given to you?”
He looked down at his boots, as if he were embarrassed.  “Me?  I’m using it to meet a very pretty lady.”  Looking back up to her, she understood it was her he was talking about, causing her to blush.
He picked up one of the peonies she’d been eyeing and paid for it before handing it to her.  “I had to make sure the pretty lady received a pretty flower.”  She blushed even more at his comment.
“What brings you to the market, if I might ask?”
“I………….uh…………..” She was speechless from his complements, and it took her a moment to formulate a sentence.  “I came for a walk from the farm, and I love looking around the different stalls, especially the flower one.  Sometimes they get my favorite flower and are kind enough to let me dawdle while admiring them.”
They continued to walk together from stall to stall.  “Do you live far from here?”
She glanced at him.  “I’m staying with my cousins on the Narracott farm just outside of town.  I came to help them for a while, but I’m due to go home soon.”  She played with the flower while they walked and talked.
His face faltered for a moment.  “Your parents must miss you.”
“I miss them as well, but my Uncle and cousin needed some help at the house while my Aunt was recovering from being sick.  It’s been nice visiting with them, but I’m eager to be home.”
“And where might home be?”  He was curious, hoping it wasn’t all too far away.
“Just outside Colebrook.  I leave for home in 3 days.”
They continued to meander about town, neither wanting their time together to end but also not confessing it to the other.  Grace showed James her favorite bookstore.  “The owner is very kind and lets me come in and read a bit when I have a chance to come in.”  They perused the books for a bit.  Before they realized it, sunset was upon them.
“I’m so sorry, James.  I can’t believe I occupied your entire afternoon!”  She felt bad.  With him having limited time off, she was sure he had things he wanted to get done.
“Not a problem, Grace.  I very much enjoyed our afternoon together.  With it getting dark, may I escort you home?”  His voice was full of hope.
“I would like that, very much.”
He offered her his arm which she gladly took.  They walked together in companionable silence until they reached her cousin’s farm.  James stopped for a moment, wanting to look into her eyes when he asked his next question.  “May I call upon you tomorrow?”
She smiled.  “You may, James.  My chores will be finished by lunch.”  They gazed into each other’s eyes.
Tumblr media
“Then I will see you tomorrow at lunch.”  James had to restrain himself from kissing her as there was nothing else he wanted to do right now other than hold her in his arms.  He feared that once she left for home, she would forget about him.
Once she entered the small home, she saw her aunt with a smug smile on her face.  “That’s a handsome soldier you’ve captured.”  She ushered her niece to sit at the table while making tea.  “Tell me about him.”
Nothing could wipe the smile off Grace’s face.  “I met him at the market this afternoon.  The flower cart had some peonies today that I couldn’t help but admire when he approached me.”  There was an obvious dreamy look in her eyes.  “He said his battalion was given a couple days rest.”
Rose was happy for her niece.  “He looks like a polite young man.”
Grace couldn’t help herself.  “He was so kind and nice.  We walked around together all afternoon.  He browsed a few books with me, and we talked for what felt like hours.”
“Will he be coming to see you before you go?  Does he know you’ll be leaving for home soon?”
Grace blushed.  “I told him I’m returning home in 3 days, and he asked if he could come see me tomorrow once I’ve finished my chores.”
Rose was so happy for her niece.  She’d been so lonely and used her time to help her family and her aunt and uncle rather than dwell on not having any suitors.  “I’m very glad for you.  You deserve a nice, young man.”  When they finished their tea, Rose gathered the cups and washed them.
“Well, it’s getting late, and you’ll be wanting to get some sleep.”  Her aunt shooed her out of the kitchen and towards the make-shift room Grace was using for sleep during her stay.
“Aunt Rose?  I’m so glad you’re feeling better.”
“I cannot thank you enough for all the help you’ve given us.  I don’t know what we would have done without you.”
That night as Grace slept, she dreamt of Captain Nicholls, dancing together in a field of wildflowers to music that could only be produced by the wind and birds.  She was wearing a yellow sundress while he was in his uniform, minus the cap.  As they danced, he spoke of how much he loved her and how he wanted to spend the rest of his life in her arms.  Fate was the word he used, saying how glad he was to have found her again.
When she woke up the next morning, she had a dreamy look on her face as she went about cleaning the kitchen and gathering the laundry.  It wasn’t until her uncle came over that she was broken out of her stupor.
“What’s got you smilin’ like that Gracie?”
The smile on her face grew.  “I had a nice dream.”
“Sounds like it was a very nice dream.”  Her aunt called him to come back to the house.
Tumblr media
In the near distance, she saw James approaching.  Her sly aunt must have spotted him and called her husband away so that he wouldn’t embarrass her favorite niece.
He was approaching quickly, holding another peony while smiling which caused her to smile in return.  Once close enough, he handed it to her.  “I thought it only right to bring a beautiful flower to a beautiful lady.”  This made her blush as she accepted the flower.
“Would you like to see the farm?”
He smiled and nodded.  She showed him the field her cousin was trying to plow, training a horse not meant for such hard labor.  “But he’s very tenacious, and cousin Albert has been working very hard with him.  I hope it works out, but it’s extremely difficult for a horse not built for that kind of work.”
Looking out over the field, not only was it on a slope, but it was full of a lot of rocks, varying in size.  “I can only imagine.  I’ve never worked on a farm myself, but the prospect of plowing a field like this looks very arduous.”
They continued to walk around the farm, eventually walking beyond the property line.  A clearing showed ahead with a small stream.  “This is my favorite place here.”
James looked around.  It was lush and green, wildflowers everywhere, and the sound of the stream on top of it made it feel peaceful as well.  “I can tell why.  This is very lovely, but not as much as you.”
Grace blushed at his words.  “It’s true,” he said. He stepped closer to her, picking up her hand with his.  “Both a beauty and a safe haven from the impending war.”
“War?  Is it true?”
“I’m afraid so, darling.  We’re leaving in 5 days time for a training encampment, but I haven’t been told where that will be.  But, if it’s alright, could I write to you?  To remind me what it is we’re fighting for, to keep me sane amongst the madness, and to have a touch of your kindness with me?”
She nodded.  “You may.  I’ll be back at my parent’s then.”
He smiled at her, relieved.  “I’m hoping this war will not last long, but I have a bad feeling about it, and just being in your presence brings me a sense of comfort, one that I would love to keep with me while I am away.”
Grace could help but blush.  “But you have to promise me something in return.”
“Anything.”
She took a deep breath.  “Promise me you’ll return?  That you’ll come home when it’s all over?”
He held both of her hands in his.  “I will do everything in my power to return home, to come back to you if that’s alright.”
“I’d love nothing more.”  The prospect of war had everyone on edge, but his promise gave her a sense of reassurance that he would make it through.
Taking a deep breath, he had one more question for her.  “There’s a dance in town tomorrow evening.  I was wondering if you might accompany me?”
Grace couldn’t help the grin that spread across her face.  “Alright, but I warn you.  I’m not much of a dancer.”
He smiled in return.  “It’s okay.  Neither am I.  I just want to spend more time with you before you go home and before I’m sent off for more training.”
“I’d like that too.”  They spent time just relaxing in that clearing, watching the clouds move by, listening to the birds chirping.  At one point, Grace took off her shoes and walked into the stream, and James followed, rolling his pant legs up.  When the breeze started, they could hear the music being carried through the air from the band practicing for tomorrow’s dance.  So James held her close, swaying back and forth with her in the stream to the faint notes.  To anyone who might have been looking on, it might have seemed a bit silly, but it was obvious these two were very quickly falling in love.
Tumblr media
As evening came upon them, they made their way back to the Narracott farm.  Grace’s hand was wrapped around James’ arm for support, especially as she was still barefoot.  Crickets chirped in the background.  It was one of her favorite sounds, finding some bit of comfort in it.
When they arrived back at the Narracott house, Albert and his father were arguing.  His father’s anxiety was skyrocketing, thinking the field wouldn’t get plowed timely per the agreement with their landlord.  On top of that, the prospect of war had everyone on edge.
James gave his farewell to Grace with a gentle kiss on her hand and bid adieu until the next day.  Once out of sight, she made her way inside.
“You don’t understand.  We have to sell the horse!  It’s not up for discussion.”
Albert wouldn’t give up that easily.  “Just give me some time, please?  1 week.  1 week is all I ask to see if Joey and I can fix this.  Please!”
Grace knew how much the horse meant to Albert and stepped in.  “Uncle Ted, surely it would be reasonable to give him just 1 week?  If it doesn’t work out, Albert will go with you to sell Joey.”  Her aunt agreed with her.
After a moment of quiet and a deep sigh, her uncle conceded.  “You have 1 week.  If I’m not satisfied with the results in 1 week, we sell the horse.  Deal?” He held out his hand.  She could see Albert practically jumping for joy.  He shook his dad’s hand.  “You won’t regret this.  I promise!”
With that settled, Grace helped her aunt prepare dinner.  Once everyone had eaten, Albert bounded upstairs for bed, determined to get an early start.  Ted, however, muttered grievances as he went outside for a while, walking about in order to try to get his anxieties to settle.
As she and her aunt were cleaning up after dinner, Rose made a sudden admission.  “I have a feeling this won’t end well, Grace.  You mark my words.”
Grace nodded.  Uncle Ted wasn’t one to give concessions lightly, and he tended to make rash decisions.  She could only hope he kept his word about giving cousin Albert 1 week to make things right with Joey.
“Captain Nicholls asked me to the town dance tomorrow evening.”  She spoke up, knowing it would be best to change the topic of conversation stuck in everyone’s head.
“As he should!  You are an exceptional young lady, and he couldn’t do any better.  He’s lucky you even say hello to him, I reckon.”  This was one of the many reasons why Aunt Rose was her favorite.  She was always very encouraging to her niece.
“You really think so?”
“I damn well do.  And if he does anything to hurt or upset you, he’ll be lucky if Ted makes it to him first.”
Grace laughed.  Her aunt may be small, but she was fierce, and no one dared cross her, except the occasional exceptionally stupid decisions made by her husband without her knowledge.
“Well, we better make sure you have something nice to wear to the dance.  If he ends up being a cad, there may be other nice gentlemen there.”  They went upstairs to look through both of their clothes.  It took a while, but they found a dress.  “It needs a bit of mending and some adjustments, but I’ll have it ready for you well before the dance tomorrow evening.  I’m sorry I don’t have anything nicer.”
“I love it!” Grace declared.  “Then it’s yours, darling Grace.  It’s the least I can do for all the help you’ve given me the past two months.”
“Are you sure?”
“Very.  Now, no more arguing.  Let's get this on you so I can measure the adjustments.”  Grace tried on the dress, and Rose grabbed her sewing things, placing pins where the dress would need to be adjusted.  “Now that we have that sorted, I’ll get working on this in the morning.  It’s getting late, and you ought to get some rest.”
Grace wasn’t about to disagree with her.  All her excitement about going to the dance with James tomorrow was catching up to her and making her tired.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
James arrived early the next evening, eager to see Grace again.  As she was still getting ready, her uncle took the opportunity to speak with him.  “I’ve heard how she talks about you.  You seem a right good fellow; however, if you hurt her in any way, I’ll come after you myself.”  While James knew this was not much of a threat considering Ted’s age and health, he still took it very seriously because it would more likely be his wife who’d come after him, and that prospect scared him more than the upcoming war at the moment.
“I promise I will be at my best behavior, sir.”
By the time they finished talking, Grace was ready.  As she made her way to the front, James’ jaw dropped, thinking perhaps he’d died and gone to heaven. He was stunned into silence, but the look on his face spoke volumes.
“You look like an angel come down from the heavens.  I’m not worthy to look upon you for fear of incurring the wrath of God himself.”
His words made her blush to no end.  She felt similarly about him.  He’d come in full officer’s dress uniform, and she thought he looked most handsome in it.
He turned to her aunt and uncle and assured them he would have her home timely.  He proffered his arm to her, and she gladly took it.  Together, they walked to town where they could already hear the music playing.
Throughout the evening, they danced together.  There were women there shooting her daggers as Grace was in attendance with the handsomest man at the dance.  Similarly, there were men doing the same to James but held back as he was obviously a soldier.  The only time they parted from each other was when Grace was feeling warm.  So he helped her find a seat and then left to fetch them some lemonade.
This was when the other ladies seized their opportunity and tried to (not so subtly) flirt with him at the drinks table.  One girl even bent forward too far over the table in order to show her cleavage; however, James was merely polite to the ladies and quietly rebuked their advances.
Something similar was happening with Grace.  One particular gentleman had been eyeing her all night.  Once this gentleman saw James distracted at the drinks table, he took his opportunity and sat next to Grace.
“Might I say, you look ravishing tonight.”  While his words were flattering, the tone made her very uneasy.  Something about this man did not sit well with her.
“Thank you, sir.”  She kept her response very short, trying to get him to understand she didn’t want anything to do with him.  He, however, did not take the hint.  He slowly slid his hand onto her knee as he spoke.  “You could do much better than a soldier like him.  And I’m a much better dancer as well.”  He leaned forward to whisper in her ear.  “Let me show you?”
This was the most uncomfortable she’d ever felt in her entire life.  She tried to move away from this man, but he grabbed her arm.  “Come now.  Don’t be shy.”
“I believe she wants nothing to do with you, sir.”  Grace had never been so happy to see James than at that very moment.  “I ask you to please unhand the lady.”
The gentleman stood up, slightly taller than him.  “Or what?  What are you going to do if I don’t?”
James smiled.  “I’m afraid I'll have to ask you to leave.”  The gentleman shoved his shoulder.  “I think not.  This young lady and I were just having a very nice time.”
James looked to Grace who had a terrified look on her face.  “Grace, if you would excuse us for just a moment.”
James took the arm of the gentleman and used his leverage to throw him back away from the growing crowd.  When the man tried to get back up, James hit him forcefully in the jaw and again on the nose.  “You forget yourself sir.  When a lady is uncomfortable, you depart.  I suggest you leave now before making matters worse.”
The man nodded.  Once he was finally back on his feet, he turned as if to leave.  When James was turning to check on Grace, he felt a blow to the back of his head.  Turning back around, he saw the man was not about to give up easily.  Before he could get in another blow, another gentleman came to stand with James along with a couple of his fellow soldiers, showing the man that he would not get away with such behavior.  Before James could strike a blow, another gentleman came and slammed his fist into the man’s gut, knocking the wind out of him causing him to double over.  “We don’t take kindly to your sort around here.  Leave or we’ll make you leave.”
Two other gentlemen grabbed the man by the arms and dragged him away from the dance.  James turned back to Grace and dropped to his knees, checking on her.  “Are you alright?  Did he hurt you?”
All she could do was shake her head.  “Do you want me to take you home?”  She shook her head again.  “I just need a moment.”  He sat down next to her.  One of his fellow soldiers came over with drinks and handed them to James.  James offered one to her.  “Here, you should drink something.”  She accepted and sipped the refreshing lemonade.
“Thank you, James.”  He smiled at her.  “No thanks needed, love.  I simply did what was right.”
After a while, both were feeling more settled, more at ease.  The band began to play a waltz.  James stood up and held out a hand.  “Would you care for a dance?”  Accepting his hand, he led her to the dance floor.  They waltzed around the dancefloor.  Lost in each other’s eyes, they quickly forgot about everyone around them.  For just a moment or two, it was as if only they existed, at least in their own private little world.
Once the waltz came to an end, he escorted her off the dance floor.  “It’s getting late.  Would you like me to escort you home?”
“Yes, please.”  She took his arm as he led them away from the dance.  They walked more slowly getting back to the Narracott farm.  Just as they reached the farm, she looked up at the stars in the sky.  When they approached the porch swing, they sat down.  Neither was ready for the night to be over.  As they gazed up at the stars, he placed his arm around her shoulders.  When she laid her head on his shoulder, he placed his head on hers.
He was the first to speak.  “I don’t think there could be a more perfect moment than this.”  She agreed.  Turning more to face her, he placed a hand on her cheek, angling her face up towards his.  Moving slowly as to give her a chance to refuse, he closed the gap, giving her a short, sweet kiss.  Once broken apart, he leaned his forehead on hers.  “I’ve wanted to do that since I saw you in the market.”
“I’m glad you did,” was all she could think coherently enough to say.  From the moment he spoke to her that first day, Grace felt butterflies in her stomach.  She’d never believed in love at first sight, not until yesterday.  If she had the ability to freeze just one moment in time, it would be this very one.
“May I come see you tomorrow morning before you leave?”
Grace nodded.  “Yes, I’d like that very much.”
Tumblr media
When James arrived back at camp, he approached Major Stewart, saluting as protocol dictates.  “What is it you want, Nicholls?”  It was obvious that Major Stewart was busy, but James had a request.
“I would like your permission to escort a young lady back to her parents tomorrow.”
“And why exactly does she need an escort?” Major Stewart sounded slightly annoyed.
“It’s a long journey, sir.  I thought, perhaps, it would be beneficial for her safety.”
Major Stewart looked up at him, slightly annoyed.  “While your intentions are admirable, I cannot spare you tomorrow.  We have to begin sourcing horses for the officers before we move to the training grounds to prepare for the war.  Each officer will need to ensure they have their own horse in the next 2 days.”
“I understand, sir.  I shall begin the search for one for myself tomorrow.”  He saluted the Major once more before departing.  Dejected, he trudged back to his own tent.  He’d start early tomorrow on his search to find a horse, but also so that he could keep his promise to see Grace off on her long journey.
With that, he was at the Narracott farm just after dawn.  Grace had planned to leave just after breakfast, and he wanted to spend whatever little time he could get just being near her.  When Rose saw him approaching, she invited him to join them, even pulling out an extra chair so he could sit next to Grace.  Rose had a feeling that he’d be there to see her niece off and had prepared extra just for him.  He could already see Grace’s bag next to the front door.
Tumblr media
Once breakfast was over, he and Grace went outside for a few minutes to have some privacy.
“My uncle has a friend who is heading towards my parents house and offered to let me ride with him.  With any luck, I should be back at my parents' house before nightfall.”
This brought him a sense of relief.  “I had asked Major Stewart if I might accompany you, but he declined, stating there were things that needed urgent attending.  I didn’t want you to have to get all the way back by yourself.”
This made her smile. “I appreciate the sentiment.  I would have loved that, but I understand you have obligations you must fulfill.  Thank you for coming to see me off this morning.  It means a lot.”
While sad he could not escort her himself, it gladdened him that she understood the responsibilities he had.  “I couldn’t let you go without seeing you one last time.  I’m hoping this war does not last long.  The only thing that brings me peace is your consent to write to you.  That way I’ll have a piece of you with me through everything.  And also a reminder of what I’ll have to return to?”
She blushed, and he adored that he caused it.  “Yes, I would love nothing more than to have a part of you with me, a reminder that I will get to see you once again.”  Thinking for a moment, she remembered she had something for him.  She pulled something out of her pocket and handed it to him.  “A token.  Something to remember me by?”
He looked down at his hand.  It was one of her handkerchiefs with her initials embroidered in a corner along with peonies and forget me not flowers.  “I will keep it with me always, my fair lady.”
James had something for her as well.  He pulled it out of his own pocket, messily wrapped in a piece of parchment.  She opened it to find a small broach.  “They call it a sweetheart brooch.  I was wondering if you might accept this as a promise that I will return to you.”  It was small, simple, and silver, but she thought it was just perfect.
She leaned up to give him a short, sweet kiss.  “I will never take it off until you return back to me.”  He helped her attach it to her dress, just above her heart.  “This way, you will be with me always, my dear James.”
He double checked to ensure he had the address to her parent’s place so he could write to her, and in return he gave her the address his regimen gave for loved ones to write to their soldiers.
It was only a moment later that her uncle’s friend, Steven, arrived with his small cart to pick up Grace.  James picked up her bag and placed it in the back of the cart for her.  Ted came to greet his friend and thank him for giving his niece a ride back so that she could get there safely as well as more quickly.  Rose came out with food wrapped up for their journey.  Albert stopped his work in the field long enough to give his farewells to his favorite cousin.
As a group, they all waved her off; however, it was only Rose who noticed a tear running down her niece’s face as she said goodbye to James one last time.  Once she was out of sight, Rose pulled him aside.  “I know you’re still around for a couple more days, and we’d like to invite you to dine with us when you have a chance.  Grace let us know you have to leave for training early next week, and we’d like to make sure you get some good, home cooked food before you leave.”
“Thank you, ma’am.  I appreciate that very much.  The food they make at the camp isn’t quite fit for dogs to be truthful.”  This made everyone laugh a bit.  “Major Stewart has tasked me to find my own horse by tomorrow.  We depart Monday, but I know not where at this time.”
Ted’s ears perked up when he heard this, quickly formulating a plan.  Albert went back to working in the field, and Rose went to work on the laundry, leaving the two alone.  “I know exactly where to help you get the best horse.”
This piqued James’ interest.  “That would be amazing!  How much would you say the horse will be?  I only have £30.”
“Don’t worry about it, son.  I’m sure I can help get you the best horse for what you have.  I’ll meet you in town tomorrow morning, shall we say?  About this same time.”
“Thank you very much, Mr. Narracott.  You have no idea how much this helps me.”  James knew that if it didn’t work out, for some reason, he still had one more day to find a horse that would hopefully work for him, but he had a good feeling about this, and he’d rather bargain with someone he (sort of) knew.
“It’s no problem helping out a fellow soldier.  I fought in the South African War.  That’s how I injured my leg.”
“I thank you very much for your support, sir.”
They parted.  James used his day to procure writing utensils so he may write to Grace.  There was no telling what he’d be able to get a hold of once dispatched and decided it’d be best to stock up now rather than hope he could get a hold of the materials later.
Tumblr media
Word of the pending war was spreading fast.  When James went to purchase the writing materials, he was in full uniform per regulations.  The shopkeeper gave him quite the discount as a way to support this soldier in the war effort.  James tucked the writing materials into his leather binder to preserve them.  What he hadn’t noticed was that the shopkeeper gave him a few extra sheets of paper.  He also gave him a leather pouch to hold his pens and pencils.  “I insist.  I only wish there was more I could do.”  Giving the shopkeeper his thanks, James left and walked to the market.  Grace’s favorite flower cart was in sight, and he stopped by to purchase just one peony.
Once back at camp, he placed the peony on the table and placed books on top to flatten it so that it could more easily travel with his first letter to Grace.
Tumblr media
That evening, Grace arrived safely back at her parent’s house, and they were overjoyed to have her back.  They were eager to hear about her journey but let her get settled back in and rest overnight before she told them about her journey.
She told them how, thankfully, the journey was mostly uneventful.  Mostly she told them about Captain Nicholls, James, and how he’d come early that morning to see her off.  She proudly showed her parents the sweetheart brooch he gave her.  They’d heard quite a bit about him in her letters, but it was nothing compared to watching their daughter gush about him in person.
“He sounds like a very fine young man.  We can’t wait to meet him.”  Her father, Michael, knew the perils of war.  His own wife had written to him when he was fighting in the South African war with his brother.  He’d seen too many good men die.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, James was in town waiting for Ted.  While waiting, he decided to get some charcoal pencils as well for sketching since this is the last of the free time he would have before heading off to the training camps.
Ted caught him off guard.  “Best horse in the county.”  He was holding the reins to Joey.  “That is a very fine horse, Mr. Narracott, but I only have 30 guineas.  This horse is worth much more than that.  Not to mention, isn’t he supposed to be helping with your farm?”
“Nonsense, young man.  Joey here is a great horse, but he’s no work horse.  Truth be told, we could use the money.  At the next auction, I’ll be looking for a horse built for farm life.  Joey will do much better with you.”
Reluctantly, James gave Ted the 30 guineas for Joey.  There was no sattle, but his regime would take care of that.  Pulling an apple out of his pocket, he gave it to Joey who ate it happily.  It wasn’t even a moment later that he heard someone yelling, telling him to stop.
“Dad, you can’t sell Joey!  You just can’t!”  Albert turned to James.  “Please sir.  I’ll pay you back for him.”
Tumblr media
“I’m sorry, sir.  I just bought him fairly with all the money I have on me.”
“Then let me enlist.  Let me join, and I will take care of Joey for you.”
James looked him up and down.  “How old are you, boy?”
“I’m 19 sir.”
James loved his bravery, but Albert was clearly not 19.  “No, you’re not.  Do you know what it is to lie to an officer?  To try to join when you’re not old enough?”
Ned dropped his head.  “Yes, sir.  I’m sorry, sir.  It’s just…..”
James interrupted him.  “I understand you are very attached to Joey here.  He’s a very fine horse.  What I will promise is that I will do everything in my power to bring him back to you once this war is over.”
Ned’s face popped back up.  While this was not what he wanted to hear, it was better than nothing, and it gave him a bit of hope.  “Thank you, sir.”
Ted pulled his son away and took him back home.
James had Sergeant Perkins take Joey over to a makeshift stall and was placed next to a beautiful black horse named Topthorn.  Over time, Joey and Topthorn became best friends, training together with their owners, preparing for the impending war.  While the horses became fond of their new owners, they never cared for Perkins.
By that evening, the peony was flattened and dry enough to safely travel with his first letter to Grace.
My darling Grace,
I hope your journey home was smooth.  It’s only been 2 days, but I miss you already, dancing under the stars, perusing books, or just laying in the field near the brook.
Training is going well, so far.  I’m not sure if your Aunt has told you, but your Uncle Ted sold me their horse, Joey.  Ted told me he was forced to sell Joey in order to cover their rent.  I wish there was something I could have done so they could keep Joey; however, I promised Albert I would do all in my power to return his horse to him.
I’ve enclosed a little something for you.  It’s not much, but it reminded me of you.
Yours always,
James

Grace smiled like a loon when she received his letter.  Her mother helped frame the flower and place it on the wall.  She then took the opportunity to write back.
Dearest James,
I miss you very much as well.  My trip home was, thankfully, uneventful.  I was very excited to see my parents.  They say hello and send their best wishes.
My mother took the opportunity to ask all sorts of questions about you, but I’m sure I told her much more than she wanted to know before she could get most of her questions spoken.  She asked what you look like.  I did my best to describe you, but I found myself falling short.  I wish I had a picture of you to show her, to keep for myself, but I have memories of our short time together to get me through until we meet again.
Thank you again, oh so much, for the brooch you gave me that morning.  As promised, I wear it every day.  I’ve started seeing some similar ones pop up with other ladies who have loved ones signing up for war as well, but none of them compare to the one you gave me, not that I’m biased.
With more men signing up for war, they’ve needed help at the bookshop near my parent’s house.  The bookshop owner is a friend of my father’s and was happy to offer me a job.
I’ve included a book to help keep you company and hope you like it.  With everything going on, I thought you might like something to read that didn’t involve war.
All my love,
Grace
Tumblr media
With her letter was the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.  James had never read it but was most glad to receive it.  As for her desire for a picture?  There had been a photographer the week before taking pictures for those who wanted them to send to families back home.  While he sent one to his parents, he had a second one for Grace, his angel.
My darling Grace,
Thank you very much for the book.  Not only was it kind of you, it’s a book I have not had the opportunity to read until now.  Other soldiers started to give me a hard time about it, but then I found several asking if they might borrow it sometime.  You can imagine the look on their faces when I said there was no way in hell I was letting this book out of my possession.
As for your request for a picture, your letter came just in time.  I had one taken just a few days ago to send to my parents, but I asked for a second copy and have enclosed it, if you would like it.  If not, feel free to throw it into the fire as I know I am not much to look at.
I am happy to hear you get to work in a bookshop.  I can imagine you dusting the shelves, placing books back where they belong, and getting to read whenever there’s a moment.
I hope all is well.  I miss you very much.
Yours always,
James

The moment she received his letter and picture, she showed it to her parents.  “Such a handsome young man,” her mother declared.  Her family could not afford to take portraits, or she would have one taken to send to him in return.  Instead, she sent another token, a lock of hair tied with a satin ribbon to include in her next letter.
My dearest James,
I cannot tell you how delighted I was to receive your last letter along with your picture.  While it does not do you justice, I will keep it with me and cherish it always.
There has been a new type of recruitment in town for nurses to help with the war effort.  Father has forbidden me from signing up so that I may do my part.  He wants me to stay home where it is safe, but I long to do my part.
I’m afraid I don’t have anything new for you other than this letter.  Things have been slow but well at the bookshop.  The books keep me company, the recurring dust being a reminder of the passing days.  I’ve managed to convince the shop owner to consider having a small poetry section.  Those books should start arriving in 2 weeks’ time, and I’m very excited for it.
I think about you every waking moment of everyday and sometimes in my dreams as well.  I hope you are safe, and I long to see you again.  I look forward to your return not just so that we can be together again but so that I can show you around where I live and to introduce you to my parents.  I’m sure they’re sick of me telling them about you by now.
Yours always,
Grace

When he received the letter of how she was doing, her father’s wish to have her refrain to sign up as a volunteer nurse, it hurt his heart to think that without her father’s explicit instructions, she could get hurt in this very war he was fighting in order to keep her safe, and that he could not have.
Darling Grace,
The days have been long and hard.  Training has been brutal.  We have been dispatched to France, arriving only yesterday.  Ever since we arrived, I’ve felt uneasy, as if there is a dark cloud hanging over us, and I cannot seem to shake it no matter what I do.  So I’ve thrown myself into additional training to distract myself.  Rumor has it we may be heading into battle in the next day or two.
I must say that I agree with your father.  I, too, wish for you to stay safe at home, away from the perils this war will inevitably bring to all.  It is not something I wish for you to experience.
As I write, I am leaning against a tree, surrounded by wildflowers.  I found the enclosed and could not help myself in sending them to you.  I have not seen these ‘forget me not’ flowers in the wild much and felt it was a sign that you should have them.  I have placed one in my pocket as well, tied in with the lock of hair you sent.  Even without it, I could never forget you, my lovely girl.
In fact, I have a question I must ask you, one of great importance.  If I could come to ask you this in person, I would; however, I must ask it.
Although we have only known each other a few weeks, I find my heart calls out to you constantly, longing and yearning for you.  I love you, my darling Grace, and it would be an honor if you would agree to be my wife once I return to you from this wretched war.  I do not have a ring, but I hope this will suffice in the meantime.
I look forward to your answer.
All my love,
Your James
Tumblr media
Enclosed was a ring made from the stem of a forget me not with the flower placed where a diamond would be.  She didn’t have to think to know what her answer would be.  Resolved as to her answer, she would pick up paper tomorrow during her lunch in order to respond to him.  All she had to do was figure out how to tell him yes, feeling that just saying the word was not enough to convey her utter surprise and joy as his marriage proposal.
Of course her parents were beyond happy for her.  Her mother rummaged in their attic for her old wedding dress and had Grace try it on.  It needed some alterations, but Grace was thrilled to know she’d be married to the love of her life in the same dress her mother wore in her own wedding.
If she only knew what was coming, that her doorstep would be forever darkened that next morning.  She’d had this awful feeling she couldn’t shake for the past few days.  The only bright spot in the last few days was the letter from James with his proposal, causing her to (temporarily) forget the dark clouds she felt over her head.

She was getting ready for work when there was a knock on her parent’s door.  Of course her mother answered, seeing an officer at the door.  He asked for Grace with a somber look on his face.  Her father saw the man, knowing exactly what his presence and the look on his face meant.  He called for Grace to join them in the front room.
“Father, I have to get ready for work.  You know this.”
“Work can wait.  This is very important.  We need you out here for just a moment.”
Huffing, she joined them in the front room.  She hated being late.  Seeing the soldier in their house, she was curious.  The soldier took off his hat, placing it over his heart.  “Ms. Grace Narracott?”
She nodded.  “That’s me.”
“I was asked to bring this to you.”  He handed her a small parcel.  “It was found among his personal effects.”
Her eyebrows scrunched.  “Found?  What do you mean found?  Who’s going through his belongings?”  She refused to read the room, to acknowledge what everyone else already knew and understood.
“Captain Nicholls charged into battle in the fields of France and did not survive, ma’am.  I am so sorry for your loss.”  He bowed to her and took his leave.  Grace erupted in tears, falling into the arms of her father.  Sobbing into his chest, he could barely make out what she was saying.  “We………..marry………..don’t know……..to do.”  Looking down at his only child, his heart broke for her.  He and her mum tried their best to console her.
When her parents were able to calm her enough, they led her to her room.  Her mother sat with her while her father went to the bookshop himself to let the owner know she would not be in for a bit and why.  The shop owner understood and offered his condolences.  She had talked his ear off about James, especially when she received a letter from him.
She was never the same after that, unable to really recover.  Others in town suffered the same fate, but each time a soldier did come home to their loved ones, she would break down and cry.
The bookshop owner gave Grace some much needed space, having her help with organizing rather than working directly with customers.  Over time, she began to talk to customers and interact with people in general, but it wasn't the same Grace. It never would be, and everyone understood that.
It went on this way for a very long time.  People tried to set her up with ‘suitable young gentlemen,’ but they weren't right for her. They weren't her James. It wasn't that she didn't try. She did, but it hurt too much, felt too much like betrayal.

Early spring of 1918, rumors swirled of a new kind of flu, one that was very unforgiving. Newspapers started to report more on the rising death toll it was causing.
Grace didn't pay any attention to it. Neither did anyone else in the town really. Well, that was until some started getting sick. Symptoms matched those listed in every newspaper.  Her parents told her to be careful, to stay away from anyone who looked remotely sick, but it was already too late.
She woke up the next morning with a sore throat and a fever along with not being able to keep anything down. Body aches came next followed by difficulty breathing, and her mother did her best to take care of Grace, but things kept getting worse for her daughter.
It wasn’t long after that when Grace died. Laying next to her on her night stand was her favorite book which contained the letters James had sent her along with the pressed flower and flower stem engagement ring.
