Why Luck Feels Unfair: The Truth About Probability

Probability influences our decisions daily, yet it is often misunderstood. Many rely on intuition rather than statistics, leading to false beliefs about luck and fairness.

On a recent flight, a lottery promised that "every fifth ticket wins." Two families bought four tickets each—and lost. They felt unlucky, even calling it "impossible." One suggested buying another ticket, assuming it would win. But would it?

Understanding the Odds

Each ticket has an independent 1 in 5 chance of winning.

The probability of losing all four tickets is 41%—not uncommon.

With eight tickets combined, the chance of losing all is 17%—unlikely, but far from impossible.

Buying another ticket does not change the odds; it still has an 80% chance of losing.

The Fallacy of “Due Wins”

The idea that past losses make a win more likely is a classic gambler’s fallacy. Probability does not "owe" a win.
