Delicious Cake

With the end of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, I've seen a tone of discourse about it’s climax. Now, I'm not here to talk about the shows politics as a whole. Personally, i didn’t have a problem with what they were trying to say, more with how they were saying it. I watched the first three seasons and the show was pretty bad. The writing was absolutely horrid. I could tell that this show was only green-lit on the merit of it’s politics, not it’s substance or narrative. We were living in a Post KorraSami, Steven Universe world so i understood. I wasn’t mad about that, i just found the writing to be so goddamn heavy-handed and pedestrian. That said, i absolutely adored this version of Catra.

Catra was the only character in that entire show who was an actual person. She had emotion. She had pathos. She grew. She changed. She was real. Scorpia maybe had moments, but the best aspect of the new She-Ra, hands down, was Catra. Imagine my non-surprise that she was actually in love with Adora the whole time. Look, that ship or reveal or whatever you ant to call it was so goddamn obvious, it hurt. It felt like bad fan fiction. That entire plot arc, the Catradora relationship or whatever, was Stephanie Meyers level of cringe. The whole show is written about as well as a Twilight novella and it really began to show toward he end there. I’m glad Catra got her happy ending, i just wish it would have been executed better. Interestingly enough, there is a very vocal part of the interwebs that hate everything about that ending, for all of the reasons they wanted it.

We are in a renaissance of visibility and representation across all forms of media. “OscarsSoWhite” has forced Hollywood to address the bland saltine-ness of most of their film and sh*t like Euphoria is killing it on the tele. I actually really like that show. It continues to demonstrate how dope Zendaya is at her job and the little Trans kid, Hunter Schafer, ain’t too shabby either. Hell, the Harley Quinn cartoon just had Harleen and her best girl, Pammy, lock lips all over that streaming shenanigan of a show. And yet, cats are upset about the type of visibility being presented. I’ve legit read articles about how "girl-girl is the laziest, safest, LBGTQ representation” there is. What do you want? Wold you prefer “Active and dangerous”? What the f*ck does that even mean? Another article tried to claim all of these shows fetishize lesbian relationships which are, in fact, extremely abusive? Really? The fairy tale, fan fic, cartoon for child aged girls, about a transforming Princess and her cute cat-girlfriend, is invalid because it didn’t end with one of them punching the other out for authenticity? Holy sh*t!

I don’t know what these people want. you scream about making Bubbline happen and when it does, you scoff. You yearn for HarleyPammy, you get just that, but it wasn’t how you wanted it executed, so it’s the worst. You want Catradora to happen, and then you attack the very premise of the entire relationship when you get it? This is the representation you all have been pining for. This is the visibility that you’ve been demanding for the last decade. It’s here. It’s prime time. It’s f*cking visible and successful, in spite of poor writing or corporate meddling. It’s resoundingly positive. Some of this sh*t is really well executed. I adored the Bubbline stuff, that was organic and beautiful. I hear the HarleyPammy thing was okay. I haven't seen that episode because i refuse to pay for whatever the DC streaming service is called. I’m ecstatic that Catra got her happy ending, even if it was poorly written and executed with the deft touch of a vertigo-afflicted, drunkard. This sh*t is progress. This sh*t is growth. This is exactly how we move forward. Cats can do more, diverse, representation now that these shows have taken those “lazy and safe” first steps. It’s like being given moist, chocolate, cake and getting mad it’s chocolate fudge even though you wanted German chocolate instead. They’re both chocolate cake, asshole! Rich and tasty. Shut the f*ck up and eat your cake, man. It’s delicious and you can always get the other flavor next time because the cake shop is finally thriving.

The Sacred Texts

Look, I really, really, love Star Wars. I know it seems like I don’t considering all of the hate pieces I’ve written about the current state of the mythos, but I actually really enjoy a great deal about the canon. I’ve been a fan since I was a wee lil’ Smokey, watching A New Hope on the tele all those years ago. I was watching a few clips of Rebels, which ain’t that good, and found myself almost in tears over the Vader/Ahsoka battle and it got me thinking: What are my favorite things in Star Wars? So i wanted to kind of captured those aspects here, for posterity. I wanted to have a place where I could just, you know, remind myself of what exactly made me fall in love with this franchise.

Darth Vader - Vader is what sparked my love for this entire franchise. That stark contrast between his jet black armor and the stark white of the rebel ship stayed with me for years. And that booming, authoritative voice of James Earl Jones? My goodness! Over the years, certain writers have nerfed him, others have embellished him, but Vader has endured. Even now, as Disney tries to completely erase his legacy, Vader is still one of the mst popular characters in the entire franchise. Even if the Mouse House usurps his pwn goddamn tale and gives it to their Mary Sue, Vader still endures. He is my absolute favorite aspect of this entire franchise and a ton of my other favorites are Vader adjacent.

Ahsoka Tano - Ahsoka is my second favorite character in the entire goddamn franchise and I never expected that to happen because I was one of those cats screaming about Anakin getting a Padawan. Color me surprised when she was just like her master but better. Ahsoka is basically the POV character to the absolutely brilliant Clone Wars, another one of my favorite things about the Star War, and she earns that distinction with the most growth, characterization, and pathos. I loved witnessing her journey over those six, now seven, seasons. She’s an amazing character and Disney is bullsh*t for neglecting her in favor of their own OC sh*tstorms.

Chelli Aphra - Doctor Aphra is one of the few Disney Star Wars characters that I actually really enjoy. She was introduced in that first Darth Vader comic run and immediately proved her worth. Obviously, the Vader comics are also on this list but it was Doc Aphra that really sold me on that first run. Her own solo adventure was pretty legit, too. It’s weird that we haven’t seen her in anything outside of the funnies though. I mean, she’s mad compelling, brilliant, resourceful, and funny as sh*t. That said, I heard rumors that Disney might be looking to cash in on certain characters after that L they took with Rise, Aphra being one of those cashgrabs so we’ll see...

Knights of the Old Republic - So, full disclaimer, I’m not super on board with Shadows of the Empire. I didn’t care for the independent tales outside of the Skywalker saga when i was a youth. That said, KOTOR killed for me. That was the first time i realized there were entire stories in this world that had nothing to do with Luke, Annie, Leia, or Han and they could be straight up excellent. That first KOTOR was damn near perfect and the second, while not as good as the first, was still one of the better RPG narratives I’ve experience. Hell, even the spin-off MMO, The Old Republic, is pretty dope and all of it started with that very first tale about Revan and his conflicted ass second life. Malak is whack, tho.

Mara Jade - Before Ahsoka, I was wildly infatuated with Mara Jade. I kind of still am and hate the fact that she was one of Disney’s biggest casualties because, holy sh*t! Ma Jade was stupid boss! The development of her character throughout her various Legends appearances was outstanding. Some of the best character writing in the lore. I was irate when they just erased her from the history. Like, how could you? Mara Jade was one of the most marketable aspect about the entire goddamn franchise and you just dump her? In favor of what? Erasing everything about the Skywalkers? The Mandalorian - I actually wrote and entire thing about Mando. Suffice it to say, this is the best thing Disney has created under the Star Wars banner by the widest of margins.

Kylo Ren - Look, Vader wank, man. I really liked Kylo Ren. I thought his passion and petulance was a legit contrast to Vader’s cold pragmatism. I thought his design was dope and the potential he shows in Awakens had me looking forward to what came next. Now, what came next was the assassination of the entire Skywalker saga, but Kylo was dope in it. I cannot say the same about Rise. Still, two out of three ain’t bad. It’s the best numbers anyone in the series has gotten. Seriously, Kylo is the bet thing about the Disney trilogy, outside of the score.

Asajj Ventress - Bro, Ventrus probably has the most complete arc after Ahsoka in the entirety of Clone wars. Even her growth, post show in Legends material, is some of the best in the expanded universe. I adore this character, man! Watching her develop from devout Sith follower, to a disillusioned shell of herself mirroring Ahsoka’s own story, to a redeemed Jedi with substantial power, to her final heroic sacrifice was an absolutely wonderful journey. Her arc reminds me a lot of what the MCU did with Black Widow only, in reverse; We got to see all the sordid sh*t was into and had to read about what came after instead of the other way around. Even so, Asajj became a legit powerhouse in the franchise and i have to than Clone Wars for that.

Maul - I didn’t like Darth Maul at first. His appearance in Menace left me wanting. Cats were hung up on his double lightsaber and fancy fighting style or whatever but, to me, he was one dimensional and expendable. Apparently to Lucas, too, because the motherf*cker got cut in half. That said, fans loved him an, somehow, he found life after bisection becoming one of the dopest characters in the entire lore. Clone Wars, literally the best thing in the entire Star Wars lore, gave this cat a character and developed him into a real force. Rebels turned him into a goddamn legend. I sit here, today, confessing how wrong I was about Darth Maul and we have Dave Filoni’s excellence in storytelling for that. F*ck was Clone Wars good, man! Also, he has some dope ass concept art.

Clone Wars - F*ck it, it’s going on the goddamn list! Clone Wars is everything a long form Star Wars story should be. It’s rich with world building, fantastic characters, dope as story lines, excellent set pieces, massive stakes, legitimate pathos, palpable emotion; Bro, this thing made me fall in love with the franchise all over again and I was already in a committed, long term relationship with my Galaxy far, far, away.

Look, I still love Star Wars,  just don’t care for what Disney is doing with my franchise. There is a lot of great stuff in the preceding forty years and it’s a shame to just ignore all of that because it’s not “canon” anymore. Admittedly, there are a few things that Disney knocked out of the park but most of what they’ve done is the worst. Still, Star Wars will endure. There’s too much love for the franchise to be killed off but corporate nonsense, especially considering the sheer girth of accessible material.

Indagare la società di oggi con tutte le sue contraddizioni, la bellezza malinconica del breve tempo dei fiori e la poesia del paesaggio che sa suscitare poetiche emozioni.  Questo il concept della mostra che vede esporre l’artista specchiese Luigi De Giovanni nelle sale di Palazzo Risolo dal 20 al 30 luglio. La mostra è organizzata da Il Raggio Verde, Arteluoghi e l’associazione e20cult con il patrocinio del Comune di Specchia in collaborazione con la Pro Loco di Specchia con allestimento dell’arch. Luigi De Giovanni con la sua pittura istintiva, traboccante di tracce dei percorsi del pensiero, si apre all’esterno seguendo sensazioni che muovono dal suo Io. I suoi soggetti sono i paesaggi, in quest’occasione, soprattutto del Salento dipinti nei mutamenti stagionali, i fiori recisi che dalla rigogliosità piena di speranza dei boccioli di vita lasciano cadere i petali nel tramonto dei loro giorni, le carte dove le garze suturano ferite troppo profonde e troppo spesso nascoste nei cuori delle persone che soffrono, i jeans nel loro racconto di lavoro e rivoluzione delle idee, purtroppo deluse: jeans diventati apparenza, strappati e lisi prima d’essere usati in una finzione vuota. La mostra è tutto questo: un’indagine profonda della società dove l’essere conta meno dell’apparire, dove la finzione è più vera del reale.

Testo critico Gli ossimori pittorici di Luigi De Giovanni di Raffaele Polo «Da dove cominciamo, con luigi de Giovanni? Verrebbe da suggerire che è importante, più che sufficiente, scorrere i suoi dipinti, le sue creazioni, per avere una esperienza esaustiva e completa di questo artista multiforme che ci impressiona con il suo linguaggio diverso ma sempre coerente  in una sorta di ossimoro pittorico, De Giovanni convince e si fa comprendere sia che percorra le vie tradizionali del figurativo (i fiori, i paesaggi) sia che solleciti con l'intrigante astrattismo sia che ci inviti all'informale dei suoi 'jeans', messaggi espliciti di una società contemporanea anch'essa permeata di contraddizioni e nonsense. Forse, la ricerca dell'intellettuale potrebbe essere articolata nella per nulla peregrina intenzione di scoprire a quali di questi 'generi' il bravo De Giovanni si senta più portato. se, cioè, nel suo intimo artistico alligni con pi�� radicata fermezza il testimone del secolo scorso oppure se l'uomo nuovo del XXI secolo sia quello che i suoi colori, le sue composizioni vogliono annunciare. Fatto sta che la piacevolezza riservata al fruitore dei lavori di questo artista è comunque univoca e di uguale spessore: ci si addentra negli scorci delle terre genuine del Salento e non solo, in una sorta di 'natura universale' ben codificata da colori e soggetti. oppure si sposta lo sguardo sulle spontanee composizioni floreali, percependo quasi il delicato, naturale odore dei fiori e delle erbe appena colte... o, ancora, le appena abbozzate figure femminili ci fanno partecipi di una introspezione a metà tra il drammatico e l'erotico, sintetizzando esitazioni e pudori ricchi di sfumature.   il discorso diventa più intrigante con le composizioni che utilizzano il tramite dei 'jeans', oggetto-simbolo di una planetaria rivoluzione del costume e della moda, indubbiamente capaci di comunicare messaggi sublimali e silenziosi soprattutto con le recenti scelte relative a strappi e tagli. come non ricordare la rivoluzione di Fontana, le sue ferite sulla tela tese a far vedere cosa c'è 'dietro' la tela, ancor più importante di cioè che è davanti... ma ricordiamo, così, su due piedi, le invenzioni di Enrico Bay, dedicate alla satira delle grandi uniformi militari o ecclesiastiche, campite sulla superficie con dovizia di ammennicoli, intrusioni e interventi, in un chiaro discorso dissacratorio. o, ancora, le realizzazioni con pezzi di manifesto di Rotella e, scendendo nel particolare, il materismo sempre più presente nei messaggi di tanti artisti che simboleggiano, via via nei loro lavori, le più evi- denti rappresentazioni totalitarie di scritte e oggetti, sino a raggiungere i più scalmanati writer della street art, mai sazi della propria espressività mutuata da muri e vagoni di treni... con de Giovanni, le frasi, i simboli, gli oggetti-simbolo sono mutuati in un completo contesto di interventi cromatici che scuote e denuncia, ponendo l'attenzione via via sulle tematiche prescelte per lanciare provocazioni e messaggi. un mondo pittorico colmo di pathos e movimento, che richiama, per certi versi, quello che fu il Futurismo nel secolo scorso. ma poi, senza parere, l'artista torna ai suoi soggetti ricchi di introspezione e, pur nella loro spesso evidente immobilità, al mondo di sogni, colori e atmosfere che lo chiamano a ripetere, ogni volta in maniera unica e particolare, quel groviglio di vegetazione o le canne palustri di un angolo di creato... per non parlare del mare, che affiora quasi a sorpresa, ad irradiare tutto il suo fascino e la sua maestosità, a riempire con toni immutabili di disponibile umanità, le tele paesaggistiche di grandi dimensioni che paiono voler abbattere qualsiasi confine pittorico, riversando sulle fiancate della struttura dipinta le proprie colorazioni, affermando con forza che non esistono, non devono esistere limiti, pastoie e argini tecnici per chi vuole rappresentare, pur se in uno spazio limitato, tutta la bellezza dell'universo. ancora un ossimoro: l'infinito racchiuso in uno spazio finito. ma quanta abile professionalità, frammista alla poesia di un animo sensibile, in queste fresche composizioni che coinvolgono appieno con la loro presenza e testimoniano la grande capacità affabulativa di de Giovanni. non è facile, in realtà, decifrare completamente i meccanismi che l'artista di specchia ci sottopone, quasi senza parere e ci lascia lì, guardandoci di sottecchi, attento ma con aria indifferente, quasi a scusarsi per ciò che ci sta mostrando. ma quei soggetti, quei colori entrano profondamente nel nostro animo, riescono a coprire ed annullare le ombre e le mostruosità che spesso vogliono annientare il senso positivo dell'arte, e intendono donarci pace, cultura, sicurezza nel sentimento e nella poesia. ecco allora, come per miracolo, che il caleidoscopico mondo pittorico di Luigi De Giovanni diventa una medicina miracolosa, un vero e proprio rimedio all'indifferente trascorrere di grigie quotidianità, ravviva- te spesso solo dall'indossare uno scolorito jeans... no, i jeans di luigi sono coloratissimi e ricchi di umore e sapore. i suoi messaggi sono pieni di fascino e intenzione positiva. il suo sguardo sereno e pacato è proprio lì, nei suoi quadri, nelle composizioni che, in maniera diversa ma sempre efficace, si susseguono in una infinita galleria di Bellezza e sapienza.»
