listen, i've been seeing a lot about palworld and about how people want "better alternatives" to pokemon and if you want a monster taming/collecting based game that's more mature than your average pokemon game and like. i'm telling you, cyber sleuth and hackers memory are Right there. they're even turn based like pokemon. sure they take some getting used to, especially if you didn't grow up on the digimon story formula, but that's okay. there's more out there than just palworld with it's weird knockoff designs and more people just need to be nicer to digimon if you ask me. especially after years of it getting shit on regularly for "just being a knockoff" when it has its own world and characters to explore.

ok anyway the reason i embarked on this whole big stupid textfile adventure in the first place, the actual reason i wanted a quick/easy term search, was to satisfy a little nagging question i had regarding word choices. which is:

john very rarely uses the word "human" in an othering way.

i.e., he doesn't really use "human" to denote some outgroup that he isn't part of. he actually primarily just uses it as a neutral descriptive term when describing like, bones or corpses or monsters, lol. the closest i could find to him using "human" in a way that implies distance is probably this line about lilly in part 20, when he's contrasting the king's attitude towards mortals:

or maybe this in part 30, reminiscing about things he saw as the king:

and maybe in part 43 when the witch is specifically challenging his humanity:

but by and large, he doesn't really, like... idk, call anyone "human" directly, especially not in a way that belittles them or emphasizes their weakness.

when he's not, as mentioned above, describing some bones he found on the floor, john actually mostly uses "human"/"humanity" to refer to a sort of abstract notion, one he appreciates or even idealizes. or he'll use it for himself, to describe the self-determination that separates him from the king.

which, yknow, makes sense! of course john doesn't want to use that word in that way. he doesn't want to distance himself from humanity. he might not think he's totally there yet, but that doesn't mean he wants to constantly remind himself that he's something other, separate from his friend and everything he wants to be. constantly referring to arthur or the people they encounter as "humans" would just remind them both that he isn't one, which is at best awkward and at worst actively hurtful, depending on how he's feeling about himself at the moment.

...you know who does love to use "human" in an othering, derogatory way, though?

yellow picks up this habit almost as soon as he knows what he is. a distinctive difference in speech patterns between the two of them.

like, atp yellow's already drawing a clear line between himself and humanity. they're other, irritating, beneath him, lower than animals.

and arthur responds with, "you don't have to be human to be a person."

do you have any advice for those just starting out using renpy/ making games?

im still learning my way around renpy and making visual novels and what works best ..here are some personal findings:

..try to replace renpys default ui and mess with the options.rpy and screens.rpy right away , the more time put into it the easier it will become to make something unique to your senses. you can change basically everything. you dont have to make a widescreen vn either..4:3, square or portrait mode are possible as well

..look into layered images, the feature is really awesome if you want sprites that change outfits or want to be able to do unique expression combinations without having to save a png of every one

..its good to define characters, atl(animations), images, transitions etc each in their own .rpy file. you can make as many .rpy files as you need and you dont have to only use "script.rpy" to write your story. i divide my script into act files to make it easier..

n some not renpy stuff:

..this software helps you take breaks and avoid RSI and it is pretty invaluable for me. it will track based on the time you spend moving your mouse or keyboard. this also helps keep on task n if you get distracted you're more aware of it.

..if you are a writer, i cant recommend getting an alphasmart neo2 enough. especially if you cant handwrite. its an old device that lets you type textfiles without a bluelight screen. you can 'send' what you write directly to your computer through a printer cable and it types it out. it fits plenty and its useful for writing script outside the computer. refurbished ones on ebay are good.

..its easy to get really overambitious and perfectionist and then not make anything as a result..my advice if this comes up is to prioritize the existence of the thing rather than its ability to match the impossible image in your head. that ideal picture will always be shifting into more impossible territory as you improve anyway, so think about what you're actually capable of and make it actually happen!! important to remember ur not triple A studio.. being independent is an advantage cuz you can do anything!

thts all i can get from the top of my head tht i havent said here before(ithink?)..i think about the last one a lot honestly i think thats my best advice i have if you can call it that

Howdy everyone, I finally had the time to sort all my screenshots today. Roughly over 2000 files. Even if it's so many I am probably lacking screenshots from certain levels.

So you guys are always free to send asks for screenshots you need, but as a small info! I won't be able to access my PC in a week because I'm finally starting my new job. Which means my setup will stay in my old apartment up until I can move into the new one in November. (God I will miss my big drawing tablet so much)
