Oh, thank you so much for this ask! These are two fics that get very little attention, so I love that you're taking me back down memory lane to look at them again!!

This Is What It Tastes Like

2: What scene did you first put down?

I always write from beginning to end, so I first put down the beginning! 😉

5: What part was hardest to write?

For me, since I was working from an existing drawing by @msrafterdark, the most difficult thing for me was to create a scenario in my head where I could imagine the two of them in this situation. I needed to it to be believable to me in order to write it.

6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?

I believe this is the only fic I've ever done where I wrote a story about one of Meg's drawings vs the other way around (her creating a drawing based on my fic!)

7: Where did the title come from?

I usually pull my titles from lines of text after finishing the fic, and this line of text is repeated several times throughout the fic.

11: What do you like best about this fic?

I like that I was able to figure out a believable way for the masking tape heart to be on the window!

12: What do you like least about this fic?

I'm sure that when Meg drew the drawing the fic is based on, she imaged a happy, peaceful situation, so I'm sorry that I ended up making the fic so angsty instead lol!

The Quest

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?

Well, I knew from the premise that it would need to be a humorous fic, so I kept it pretty light-hearted.

3: What's your favorite line of narration?

The very last line of the fic!

'Beware, all ye squirrels and monsters.  Fox Mulder is the master of this unremarkable little house.'

6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?

I do remember that I wrote this fic in one day, which is unusual for me. Plus the fact that it was literally inspired by a real event! (see next question!)

8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?

The morning I wrote this fic, there was a squirrel in my son's room. I went in to try and rescue it from on top of the curtain rod, and it literally jumped at me and landed on my glasses for a second! And thus, the idea for the fic was born lol!

11: What do you like best about this fic?

I love the extended metaphor of Mulder as a knight in battle during the whole fic- it was so fun to write!

Miraak:

👄 What is your OC’s smile like? Is it bright and wide, or thin and reserved? Does your OC wear any lipgloss or lipstick? Do they chew their lips?

So, similar to Jia, Miraak's smile is quite reserved. He had not an easy life either, and as he grew up in an era of draconic oppression, tyranny, blood, and constant death, I believe Miraak was pained and emotionally inhibited from a young age. Not to mention an almost death blow dealt with by his friend, whom Miraak considered brother (Vahlok), and right afterward, his endless imprisonment in Apocrypha. I think he has forgotten how is it to feel and thus smile, so at the beginning of his liberated life in Nirn, he mostly smirks--imperceptible and thin, so whole-hearted smiles are quite rare for him. But similar to Jia, he will gradually find his smile, and together they might be able to feel again. 👀 🥰

🪞 How does your OC perceive themselves? Do they believe themselves to be attractive, unattractive, or average? Does their view of themselves affect their self-esteem, or are they unbothered by their physical appearance? (If your OC does have things they’re confident or insecure about, what are they?)

Ahh, that's my favorite question! Well, I personally imagine Miraak as a handsome man, maybe not with the typical norms of beauty, but still a man with an imposing bearing. I believe that before he became tainted with Hermaeus Mora's ink and his appearance altered, he had sufficient self-esteem, and he comprehended he maintained a distinct, mightier aura than the rest, not necessarily because of his towering Atmoran physique, but mostly because of his dragon blood which made him stood out significantly. But after the color of his eyes, his skin, and generally his whole being was marked by Mora, his self-esteem became non-existent, and in my headcanon, he feels uncomfortable and ashamed when people notice the Daedric impact on him (poor boi Miraak 😢).

Jia:

🪞: As for Jia, her self-esteem about her appearance was mostly non-existent. And although she is attractive, or more like unique considering her features, she views herself quite differently than the rest of the world. She wasn't always like this, but after the most traumatic experience of her life, in which, among others, she was constantly being humiliated for her mixed-raced blood, she gradually started to hate the way she looked, and she ended up not particularly caring about her physical appearance at all. Of course, this quite changed when she fell in love...🥰

💇 What is your OC’s hairstyle? How do they maintain their hair? Do they wash it and/or cut it regularly? Have they ever dyed their hair?

Jia has long hair, so in her adventures, she cannot but bound it. She plaits half of her hair in multiple little braids that usually are entwined with each other so they look like dragon scales, something very close to Daenerys' braids! When she is in her house she leaves her hair entirely free (again, something very much appreciated from *someone* 👀). She washes it regularly with her favorite lavender-vanilla soap, and she had dyed it only once when she had to sneak into the Thalmor Embassy incognito; the color then was black as coal.

it doesn’t matter where he is, the second you switch on the water he’s there. you pick up your towel in his general vicinity and his head snaps up, watching you until you head into the bathroom and he’s immediately trailing at your heels.

or, you get home, hear the shower running and before you even enter the bathroom your pants are hanging from one leg. Jason thinks it’s hilarious when you fumble your way into the shower with him, hands already reaching out to touch his soapy skin, all warm and soft and safe.

you both write stupid little messages and make silly drawings on the mirror when it gets all steamy and more often than not it’s a simple ‘I love you’ or ‘let’s fuck later’ with a horrible picture of two stick people laying on top of each other, (you tried your best, okay?).

you know that joke about dads and knowing when you touch/go near the thermostat?? yeah. that. but it’s Jason and his shower sensing ability.

he’s out on patrol, you start the shower and all of a sudden you get a text message from him saying ‘don’t you dare shower without me.’

here’s the thing. the absolute joy and wonder i feel whenever someone tells me they came across ahb! and are now taking an art history course / majoring in art next year / went to their local art museum for the first time in ages is exponential. when yall send me your favorite artworks and tell me about them or tell me you went to x museum to see x painting mentioned in ahb??? it’s just so so wonderful. because never did i think something i wrote out of love for art and love for art history would lead anyone else to research art or talk about it or seek it out for themselves and that’s so much more than i could ever imagine would come out of a very timid first attempt at creative writing/fandom involvement.

i wrote it out of love and y’all have all reciprocated that love tenfold and ran with it to talk about art and explore it and share it with me and those around you. and it’s just been a very special incredible thing that makes me emosh. :,)
