Pride Petty Watch
Long story short, I owe the BL gods, so I'll be watching TWO series from my Petty List during the month of June. This list includes shows I haven't watched for purely petty reasons, so I'm asking the crowd to pick the two shows I will watch from all the MAME series, some censored Chinese bromances, a few sexual tension-filled Korean bromances, and one wild card.
I'm making my first ever poll, so whichever two series get the highest numbers will be the two I watch. And for all the kind people in the crowd, this is not the time to think about me. Pick your favorite. And for all the people who I annoy on the daily with my wild ass takes that piss you off, pick TharnType. But there is a possibility of a secret thirteenth option that would hurt me much worse . . .
The petty ass reasons are below the poll.
Disclaimer: If you're going to read the petty ass reasons, I need you to understand these are PETTY ASS REASONS, so don't try to hit me with 2,000 words about why me not watching censored bromances is a problem or why me not liking your fave hurts your feelings. Nah. Pick a show!
MAME
Tumblr media
Love By Chance
This show came out at the end of 2018, and I watched the first episode, maybe first two, and thought it was boring. Then, in 2019, I saw a GIF of the locker scene, so I recommitted. I made it past the first episode just when the PerthSaint drama started spilling out everywhere, so I chucked the deuces and haven't returned since.
Tumblr media
TharnType
For some reason, I couldn't find the first episode when it aired. Then, I found out how the first episode ended. Then, I found out about Type's past. Then, I just kept finding out more awful stuff until eventually the MewGulf shit finally hit the fan, and I was still reeling from the PerthSaint drama (and the emerging ZeeSaint chaos). At this point, I've built this show up so much that I'm afraid to see what it is actually about.
Tumblr media
Don't Say No
A story of another GIF of a locker room scene sucking me in! After the first two MAME pairs blew up, I believed her shows were cursed, so I opted out of watching this one even though I thought it would be the one to vibe with me the most. But the biggest reason was because the main characters came from TharnType, so I felt like I would have to watch TharnType to understand this show, which was a big hell nah.
Tumblr media
Love in the Air
I watched this through mutuals on my dash, so I feel like I did watch it. It is also the highest rated MAME series, so I had faith in it. However, when I found out about Sky's past, TharnType's ghost popped back up, and I realized this demon of a show is gonna haunt me in every MAME series.
Tumblr media
The Wedding Plan
Y'all hated one of the leads so much while it was airing that I now hate him, and I don't think I can let that go, so I'm coming in with pre-hate and TharnType's ghost, but on top of that, some of y'all said it was boring. But what is boring in a MAME series? Consent? Not kidnapping someone? I never got answers, so I'm very conflicted about this show.
Censored Chinese
Tumblr media
The Untamed
It's color coded, but FIFTY FUCKING EPISODES! What is this shit? Grey's Anatomy? The fuck! Second, once China pulled Addicted, I was holding grudges for life because it crossed from entertainment censorship into real-world oppression, so I could not bring myself to support media from a country that openly discriminates against the queers when I live in America where our highest court is just one Supreme Court Justice away from making us all live in the damn Mojo Dojo Casa House.
Tumblr media
Word of Honor
It's color coded, but THIRTY-SIX FUCKING EPISODES! What is this shit? Supernatural?! The fuck! Second, I don't know the difference between this and The Untamed. Both are color-coded, one of them has a lot of uncles (?), one of them has awful facial hair, and they all have pretty outfits. Every time someone makes a reference about these shows, I just nod the same way I do when people mention Star Wars because none of it makes sense.
Tumblr media
Guardian
I spent two years believing Killer and Healer was Guardian. I haven't watched either, but I thought they were the same show. Honestly, if this show wins, I might just watch Killer and Healer because I will forget they are not the same show. Don't they both solve cases? And because it's China, past lives must be involved, no? I'm looking at their MDLs as I write this, and I'm still not convinced they are different.
Tumblr media
Stay with Me
It's color coded, but I know how it ends, and word on the street is that IS the ending since a second season seems unlikely. China couldn't just let me be hurt over Addicted, the original. No. Gotta hurt me again with Addicted, the remake. Rude af.
Tumblr media
The Spirealm
First off, SEVENTY-EIGHT FUCKING EPISODES! What is this shit? Law & Order: SVU?! The fuck! I know how this ends, and it ain't happy! I don't care how people are trying to spin it, so to sit through SEVENTY-EIGHT DAMN EPISODES just for that ending already has me irate. And don't try telling me Viki combined episodes so it's only thirty-four. That's still a lot. However, everybody who has watched it says it's phenomenal, so is the pain worth it or are these people all lying so they convince themselves it was worth it?
Korean Bromance
Tumblr media
Beyond Evil
With most Korean dramas, I feel like I missing something important. Like some part of the story does not click with me and I stay lost for the rest of the show. I suck it up for the queers, but the not-queers-but-it-is-queer shows . . . nah, and especially one about cops . . . (-_-). Also, The Worst of Evil just showed, and it was another reminder that I need these cops to quit their jobs and just screw each other. Embrace "Be Gay. Do Crime"
Tumblr media
The Devil Judge
I know enough about Kpop to know GOT7 would not let one of its members kiss a man in this show. I looked at those GIFs of Jeff Satur and Jackson Wang on their show knowing damn well that if Wang got too close to Satur, an entire management team would have ascended from hell and kidnapped both of them, so the promo for this show was so wild because it felt queerbait-adjacent, and I was salty about it.
WILD CARD!
This option will be automatically unlocked IF this stupid little poll gets 216 votes, so I have high hopes this will not happen since I ain't that popular and I hate this wild card which is . . .
Tumblr media
SOTUS
This show is my original TharnType. It came out in 2016. I watched it live. I watched the sequel. I remember neither. New was in it? Off was in it?! WHAT?! I have no memory of this show except Krist wiping his mouth, and I have carried that with me for eight damn years. I loved Be My Favorite, so I thought I moved past whatever strange grudge I was holding against this man who doesn't know I exist nor care, but then I saw that trailer for The Ex-Morning, and unlike Elsa, I can't let this shit go, so I'm willing to play Jumanji and go back into the jungle to finish this once and all.
So what it's gonna be, mi gente. Which demons am I facing for Pride and what shows do I get to stay petty about? Help me decide!

Favorite Kiss Game
Rules: create a poll with five of your all time favorite onscreen kisses, setting any standard for qualification you choose. Then tag more friends to join in!
Tagged by @he-is-lightning-in-a-bottle. For my poll, I am going with bl kisses that marked a major transition in a romance arc, because for me, the best kisses are the ones that have real meaning to the characters and their emotional journeys. To narrow the pool and eliminate some heavy hitters, I am excluding first kisses here and focusing on important kisses that came later in a relationship.
TharnType: Type Reaches out for Tharn
Tumblr media
For all that this show is remembered for all the high heat sexy sex, this simple chaste kiss is the most important one in the story. It's the first moment of casual affection between them and the first time Type reaches for Tharn without trying to fight what he wants.
Bad Buddy: All In at the Beach
Tumblr media
This beach trip is the moment Pran and Pat decided they were all in on fighting for this relationship, even if it meant a lifetime of half truths and hiding. Their kiss on the beach sealed it and led to their first time.
History 3: Make Our Days Count: Engaged
Tumblr media
This proposal was so wild and so fast, but it made perfect sense for this couple. Bo Xiang needed to show that he was serious and Zhi Gang needed to feel secure. The way Zhi Gang cried while they kissed said it all.
Lovely Writer: No More Hiding
Tumblr media
This is the moment when everything for Nubsib and Gene is finally out in the open with both the public and their families: who they are, how they feel about each other, and what they are willing to fight for. It was cathartic to see them kiss in the street in front of their childhood homes in full view of their families.
The Eighth Sense: It's Not the End of the Story
Tumblr media
Oh, and I'm afraid that's just the way the world works
It ain't funny, it ain't pretty, it ain't sweet
Oh, and I'm afraid that's just the way the world works
But I think that it could work for you and me
Just wait and see
It's not the end of the story
Brb gotta go rewatch T8S.

one thing i really love about mame's stories is that every time i get the certain feeling that yes, these two people are just right for each other. she has such a deft hand at writing characters that fit together in very specific and unique ways, that make sense together, where there is never a sliver of doubt that their relationship is going to work out. sometimes just by virtue of the fact that both guys are so messed up they wouldn't be able to make it work with anyone else (yes, i started watching tharntype a few days ago, in case you're wondering).
this is also the feeling i got in the love sea finale: tongrak and mahasamut are exactly right for each other and they fit together in every possible way—at the start of the series, i thought that they would probably end up spending half their time on the island, half their time in bangkok, and i am so glad i was right, because that feels so fitting for the relationship these two have. they both have strengths that shine most brightly where they're at home, and it wouldn't be fair to either one of them to be expected to uproot the entire life he has built for himself.
mahasamut was ready to sacrifice a lot to give their love a chance, but there was a line that he wouldn't cross, and that line was giving up his own dignity. he helped tongrak get over the fear of his father, but it was on rak himself to get over his fear of being hurt by commitment, being hurt by love.
it was so fitting for everything to come full circle, for them to be back on the island where they first met, facing each other after everything they'd been through, and rak having to make an effort tearing down the walls he had built between them. i love that it wasn't easy. that mut didn't fold the moment he saw him. that he made it clear he would not accept anything less than for rak to say the words, out loud, to his face.
i love the way they talked about their future together. that rak immediately went completely overboard and bought a house on the island and mut was like "i'm not mad because i know you did that for our relationship, but you gotta talk to me before making similar decisions in the future". i love that they're figuring out their path together. that rak is unsure about how to be in a relationship and mut is going to be by his side every step of the way. that they're going to wake up next to each other every morning. that they're going to laugh together. (yes, i am still emotional over rak's speech, don't touch me 😭😭)
anyway, i had an amazing time with this show, and i'm really happy with how it ended. now please show me what happened with vi and mook in the special episode 🥺🙏

khun abl when do you think we'll get thailand flexing their marriage equality muscles? will we be getting our first non-fantasy wedding later this year or sometime in 2025? (sorry if this is very vague, i'm just very happy)
Immediately.
I wouldn't put it past GMMTV to do a special reshoot for something currently airing and then shoehorn it into final ep: We Are or Wandee Gooday, just so they can be the first to depict a legal Thai gay wedding on screen. Hell, they might already have shot it.
All things being equal though, the pulps are usually more nimble, so it might one of them that scoops the glory of primacy.
And if those don't moves fast enough, we all know it's gonna be Mame and Love Sea that takes the gold at the end of this rainbow.
Tumblr media
Behooves me to say:
We have had marriages on our Thai BLs already (TharnType 2, My Secret Love, Laws of Attraction, and Cherry Magic spring to mind).

Thank you Turtles for yet another great piece on IFYLITA. I'm so excited that you picked up the novel. So having known the context, how would you have fixed the IFYLITA finale, if you were the director and didn't know if it was possible to have a S2 or not? Would you still have included all 3 Yais or do you think you would have tried to extend IFYLITA into a 16-18 episode series in order to adapt everything from start to finish? Is there anything from Part 1 of the novel that you are glad/happy that it wasn't adapted into the series or things you like that the series have done differently/taken different approach from the novel?
You must be so tired after your work trip and I'm really sorry for bothering you about IFYLITA even though you just wrote such a long post about it 😭
@clairedaring, I will take ANY EXCUSE to keep talking about I Feel You Linger In The Air -- I LOVE this extended conversation, thank you for engaging me in it! <3
Here's my thinking on how this first season shaped up, and a lot of this comes from conversation that I had with @lurkingshan and @neuroticbookworm before I read the novel last week into this week.
The material for the 1928 Chiang Mai era clearly fit a style and a tone that director Tee Bundit knew he could do a lot with. (@clairedaring, my recent history with Tee Bundit has been in watching many of his shows -- TharnType and Lovely Writer in particular -- for my Old GMMTV Challenge project, where I'm watching older Thai BLs to learn more about the genre. I also watched Step By Step -- TT and SBS are two of my most passionately hated shows, and I utterly LOVED Lovely Writer, so I have a real love-hate relationship with Tee Bundit, lmao.)
Since I've read the novel -- I'm glad he stuck with one era for the first season, and I really liked how he expanded it. We know that Eaung Peang and Robert have much more minor roles in the novel, and Tee Bundit greatly expanded EP's role to include a lesbian main couple, as well as a dialogue about women's reproductive health and freedom. There was Yai's arranged marriage in the drama that got extended, as well as the criminal downfall of Uncle Dech, Robert, and Yai's father by proxy. Yai's mother gaining power to run the family after that, etc., etc. -- these are all themes that Tee clearly glommed onto in expanding that era, and @clairedaring, to the point you made in the reblog tags of my previous piece from yesterday, I am SUPER glad we spent most of our time in this era. Tee also just made it GORGEOUS for us to watch, which was a treat.
I think if Tee had tried to include all three Yais, we would have felt short shrifted. The Seehasingkorn/Ayutthaya era of the novel is so lengthy. And there are HUGE behavioral change moments for both Jom and Commander Yai in that era. Especially for a Thai audience that's familiar with the novel, if that had gotten shortened, then there definitely would be public criticisms and outcries. (Plus? That era was so much FUN in the novel. Jom was SO SASSY and bold to start courting Commander Yai first!)
I think, if Tee Bundit gave a huge bunch of energy and attention to 1928 Chiang Mai, he'd want to do the same for an even older, more nomadic era. I cannot imagine how beautiful it would be to see that depicted.
And then Tee could fix the order of some scenes from the first season, and we could see more reveals in context, as well as the present day? A season 2 would just be ridiculously awesome for all of that.
The one thing I would have liked fixed was the redundancy from episode 11 to episode 12. I also would have liked more specific clarity about pieces of Jom being lost every time a drawing was made -- we saw that he froze and transcended himself, but that was illuminated pretty early on in the novel, and I think the same could have been done in the series without losing dramatic effect.
But these are minor quibbles. We got to center ourselves in the development of the incredible relationship between Khun Yai and Jom to start the dramatic introduction to this series, and the way Tee Bundit did it defied nearly all of my expectations about this work. He didn't miss any of the big themes of the novel, which I so appreciate, and I think he enriched our experience of the novel by expanding greatly the plight of women in that era. I'm glad we had mostly one Yai to deal with, because more of them would have been a lot!

TharnType ep 5
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm concerned that I talk too much about my past in these reviews. Maybe too much all together on my blog. I’m extraordinarily fortunate; I’m a survivor, not a victim. I’ve only mentioned my past because, like others, I have a complex backstory, which shapes my fears, my interests and my opinions. Furthermore, I never forget that inner complexity when I’m writing. Maybe if I were actually known versus anonymous, I would be less detailed and direct. More like MAME who hides her story beneath layers.
We start the series off with them buying bedsheets. It's one of my favorite scenes because it shows the huge development of Type. It's light and fun, but while Type walks away, he doesn't get angry. He's uncomfortable, but he's not truly angry. Book excerpt: But the person who is shyer than the shopping guide is Type.
I am not one for expensive gifts, but this is a different culture and there is a lot more meaning behind it. See, in America it is about bragging rights. Here it says, I value you and I have the resources to care for you.
Lots of things to point out in this next scene. Even though Type is uncomfortable and done eating, he doesn't leave Tharn. He stays, and he even starts to ask questions about Tharn. Type shows Tharn in so many little ways that he does care. When Tharn looks up, Type says never mind because he doesn't want to see Tharn upset. When Tharn reaches over to touch Type, Type lets him. He doesn't yank away. He tells him to let go, but remember, victims and survivors are very uncomfortable with surprise touch. Book excerpt: “Let go of me!” Type yelled, Tharn let go of his hand and Type immediately grabbed his hands, then asked. See, in the book, Type actually grabs Tharn's hand. This tells us that it wasn't a gay thing, it was a touch thing.
The communication is getting so much better. Tharn tells him, "if you remove the sex part, aren't I just a friend." "I hate when you call me wifey." Tharn immediately understand that Type just isn't able to, yes we are friends. He understands that this is Type's way of saying, yes okay, but don't call me this. Tharn understand Type. Book excerpt: Type's fear made Tharn worried. At this time, Tharn can see clearly, Type was afraid to love him.
Type invites Tharn to eat with him in the Cafeteria, and you see the excitement in Tharn. This is a huge step. It says, Type really does see him as a friend. Book excerpt: Since they went to buy sheets that day, Type's attitude has been much softer, but he didn't expect him to be softer enough to ask him to have breakfast together. Now Type's book excerpt: It wasn't until finally, after eliminating some subjective prejudices, that he finally felt that it was true he really hurt Tharn's hearts in many things. Well, although he hates gay from the bottom of his heart, if he lies, he will go to hell! He swore that he always regarded Tharn as a friend. Sometimes he said words that were serious and hurt others because it reminds him of the shadow of the shadow of his past. But then, Ai’Tharn didn't hurt his heart... But also helped him many times. The only idea left at this point is that… He suddenly didn't want to hear Ai’Tharn say he was hurt. This is a victim finally pushing past their all consuming hate. Finding a reason to let it go, and this is when the victim grows into a survivor.
The breakfast scene is everything to me. When I say that, this show means the world to me. This is why. When I say I relate to Type, this is why. For me, this is special because it's such an accurate portrayal. It's actually hurtful to hear some of the comments about Type, never mind that there might be truth. But those comments are directed at me, even if I wasn't the intended target. Because Type is us when we go into our cocoon with our hate and fester, but he is also us when we turn into a Butterfly.
The bar date. Everything going well, lots of communication. Then one of the bar owners comes. Notice that Type this time doesn't get upset. He's nervous with her, but there is no anger. Well, not till Tharn comes back and we see a tiny bit of jealousy.
Then the kiss, which is visually stunning. The chemistry is felt through the screen. Book excerpt: When his soft lips were covered, Type sat there at a loss. It's just a kiss. It won't cause any harm. But the soft touch made his heart beat very hard. Second kiss For this kiss, Type's heart was still guilty. It's all alcohol fault, which made him sit still like this. He used to be very confident that he will just restrain things at sleeping together and had the chance to be an ordinary friend. Now, he has to ask himself again… He and Tharn, are they really just friends?
It's too much too fast for Type. It took him this long to get here, but for Tharn he feels rejected.
I really do like Type and Techno's friendship. It is a true friendship. When Techno says, but I really want you to play. Type looks at him to decide if he is serious and, seeing that he is, relents. Even though Techno puts in humor about being the captain. There is no doubt now that Type will stay on the team. Type is a lot of things, but he is a loyal friend. You especially see this in Techno's story.
Tharn is purposely giving Type the silent treatment, just to see if he cares at all. Which is causing Type to lose his shit because he cares. Type does everything he can think, but Tharn is holding cold because he needs to know there really is hope. Which Type gives when he kisses him. Then Tharn lets slip what he was doing. Which upsets Type, but then he listens to Tharn and understand that he was really upset. Type has wrestled a lot of demons, but he isn't there yet. I know that's difficult for a lot of people. But thinking of it like this. Type had an infected wound. It took a long time to fester to infection and though he got medication and bandage now, it's still going to take a little longer to reach the point of healing.
Emotional damage can be every bit as damaging as physical and as a human race, we need to start respecting that. Not pushing people to heal when they have a deep ass wound. Some emotional hurts equal to a paper cut, but not the traumatic kind. And it will take more than a magic dick to work his way through it. Excerpt: He admits that he likes sleeping with Tharn, asking him to go shopping or eat with him, which he doesn't think is strange, but there is always a voice in his mind to remind him that he is a boy.
Type suddenly felt satisfied. He could not help turning his head to look at those affectionate and focused brown eyes, but he shut his eyes and turned his head quickly and when he opened his eyes, he felt that he was about to be seen through, and he was a little scared.
The kiss on the foot. It's not less romantic. Maybe even more so because it says, would a casual lover do this?
Once again, Techno is the neutralizer, speaking out the truth. Type says he still hates gays, but he doesn't hate Tharn. We see Tharn smile. Because Tharn see's the butterfly that's trying to break free from the cocoon to fly. And honestly, that's everything. Tharn seeing past all the defenses. Seeing the devoted friend and caring person beneath.
And so Type begins to wonder if he can escape his attraction to Tharn. I know this makes Type look like a jerk, and he is, but let me try to explain. Sometimes when you start a relationship it's nonstop triggers, and Type has been constantly triggers for a period of time now. So much fight or flight and very little normalcy. Even though he cares for Tharn and he appreciates him. Is it really surprising that a part of him wants to run from the triggers?
That's it for this episode. Hope you guys are still enjoying it. 💜💜💜 This post is dedicated to @rinkitsune and @pose4photoml

Beyond acting, @ mewsuppasit has made considerable achievements in his singing career too. In just four years, he has collaborated with some of the most notable stars globally, including British electronic pop duo Honne and South Korean singers Sam Kim, Bumkey, and most recently, EXO’s Suho.
At the link in bio, we talk about his thoughts on the big “Thai wave”, acting vs singing, and his aspirations for the future.

Presenting L’Officiel Hommes’ Nº14 June/July 2024 cover star: @ mewsuppasit
Actor, singer-songwriter, model, producer, and CEO of his own company — Mew Suppasit seems to nail it all. Having started out in the entertainment industry by appearing in various music videos and commercial advertisements, the 33-year-old began acting with roles in Thai boys’ love series I Am Your King and What the Duck: Final Call, but it was his portrayal as Tharn in TharnType: The Series (alongside our April 2024 cover star, Gulf Kanawut) that truly propelled him to heady heights.
Head to the link in bio to read the full cover story.

Hi! apologies if you've answered this before, but can you recommend some bls that deal with homophobia, be it internalised or external? or more generally, bls that are not set in the bl bubble where gayness is 100% accepted?
Thank you very much <3
Ooo, sure thing!
BL's Not Set in The Bubble
BLs that deal with homophobia (internal or external) and rough coming out sequences
Tumblr media
Began Beginning from Myanmar is all about this. It's not a BL I would necessarily recommend but it is interesting for many reasons. Both leads are dealing with massive internalize homophobia, among other issues.
Similarly: Like in the Movies and Tie the Not from the Philippines.
And Goodbye Mother and Nation's Brother from Vietnam.
From Thailand
To Sir, With Love - witnessing his family's massive homophobia that results in major tragedy as a child is what drives our main character's whole personality and self hatred. Massive trigger warning.
Tumblr media
Until We Meet Again - the pair in the past, of course, it's the driving trauma of the relationship reincarnated. Massive trigger warning.
I Feel You Linger In the Air - fear of being caught is a through line in this drama.
Tumblr media
More modern set stuff:
City of Stars deals with having to leave the closet as a super star. So does Close Friend Season 2 a little. The OhmFluke pair also deals with coming out to parents. Love Stage!! (Thailands version) contains one couple that chooses to remain closeted for the good of a career and another that risks it.
Moonlight Chicken - mostly about self hatred and difficulty in being out, to the point where his young nephew challenges him on it and provides a foil.
Tumblr media
Also, ya know, TharnType and Why R U. Both have self hated and challenging coming outs because of trauma and daddy issues.
Dark Blue Kiss - Kao is terrified of being outed and it's used to blackmail him.
Tumblr media
Similarly although he is out of Ae, Pete is being abused and blackmailed because he is gay in Love By Chance. Also Ae doesn't manage to come out... yet.
I Told Sunset About You - of course.
My Gear and Your Gown final episodes contain homophobic (or are they?) parents.
Second Chance heavily implies that there is something going on with Paper's inability to accept Fah.
Tumblr media
Similarly Gene accepting Sib in Lovely Writer.
I'm pretty sure there's a ton of homophobia at the back end of My Tee, but honestly it's been years sicne I watched that mess.
Charming little pulp 21 Day Theory deals with quite a bti of this, but our main character has a lovely gay uncle to guide the way.
"Punch the homophobe" my favorite trope of all time, happens in Oxygen. But otherwise they neatly circumvent the patriarchs objection by defacto adopting a child to inherit.
Tumblr media
TonhonChonlatee is all about one characters inability to acept his own queerness as encouraged by his homophobic family and various other evil characters.
My Only 12% actively tackles and calls out cultural homophobia and damaging misrepresentations.
"Why does everyone think that both of them are strange? If it's not wrong, why does everyone hurt?"
Tumblr media
The show he's talking about is Thailand's first proto-BL, love of Siam and it is about an inability to come out.
Tumblr media
From Japan
Life: Love on the Line - it's parental disgust and personal self hatred and paranoia that breaks them up (they get back together but he as to get over it)
Tumblr media
Similarly His - is a kind of reunion romance after self-homophobia drove one half of the pair to marry someone else.
Tumblr media
Actually the original series with the same characters, His the series, also deals with self acceptance around gayness, and it's subtle (Japan) but it's pretty clear one of them was kicked out of/ or left his previous school because he got outed. (Light on Me references a similar situation, but it's ultra subtle.)
If It's With You also kinda falls into this category. Not sure these can be called "dealing with" it tho, more side stepping and alluding to it.
Tumblr media
Tokyo in April is - yeah it's kinda the whole thing from one half of this pair
What Did You Eat Yesterday also has a coming out to the parents thread throughout, and a coming out at work thing, but it's not really the point of the show.
From Korea
Most Korean BL are gonna be out. The specialize in the bubble. Although a case could be made for Love For Love's Sake and Love Class. And, see comment, Jazz for Two.
Tumblr media
One noted exception is Just Friends which is a short piece about coming out to mom while on leave from the military. This is one of Korea's earliest BL pieces and not strictly BL, but it's fascinating in that neither theme (military nor coming out) would reall be reused again.
From Taiwan
My Tooth Your Love - has a kinda different take and we aren't sure, as viewers whether it's because he's gay or because he's not doing what the Patriarch wishes. But trigger warning for [physical abuse.
Tumblr media
DNA Says Love You deals with this and other forms of queerphobia during the later half. Slow start but I do love this show.
Faded is a propaganda piece (pro marriage equality) which is all about coming out to a parent.
In H4CTY Xing Si (of the side couple) is having a hard time coming out but that's complied by the fact that he's fucking his stepbrother, it's a mess, bit I enjoy them - v problematic couple tho.
Tumblr media
Papa & Daddy actually has a coming out sequence (GASP!) where the parents don't take it well as does Love is Science? (sides) - but the later is mostly because disaster bi is also baby daddy.
Red Balloon, of course, and it's sibling movie Your Name Engraved Herein are kinda all about self loathing and suffering because of gayness and lack of acceptance.
Tumblr media
Unknown is certainly tackling some of this.
In which I talk about some of my favorite coming out sequences:
He's Coming to Me has my favorite series of coming out sequences to both friends and mother.
Tumblr media
A few more that I really don't like (Promise) and probably Together With Me should be here, but I willfully can't remember them.
