Why are good teachers leaving the profession?

Good question. Teachers are held to ridiculously high standards. Just in the schools I have been in or have friends in, teachers are required to have long hair pulled back at all times, we have to wear tennis shoes (sometimes heels), only pink or low toned nail polishes (or in some cases, none at all), very minimal makeup, and absolutely no hair color that is anywhere close to being ‘unnatural’. Tattoos must be covered always. No more than one piercing per ear for females. In the school I work in, if you get the tiniest bit of anything on your clothing, you must change immediately, but there isn’t always someone available to take your class if you need to change. Teachers often work six plus hours without the hint of a bathroom break. Not to mention, the children are getting worse. Let me rephrase that, the parents are getting worse. A lot of the parents don’t care that their child injured you or another student. They don’t care that their child is unruly. They don’t care that their child is misbehaved. They don’t care that their child doesn’t do class work. If their child is failing? It’s the TEACHERS fault. Child gets suspended? The TEACHER is picking on their kid. While I agree that teachers have to do their best to reach every child, I also believe that we can only do so much, especially since many schools have strict policies on what we can and can not do to help a child. Class sizes are going up and parenting is going down.School boards and Boards of Education are putting more and more pressure on teachers to be perfect. We are judged on class averages, test scores, and our appearances. Teachers are required to put in long hours for very little pay. Most teachers have to provide the majority (if not ALL) of their classroom supplies. When Summer comes around, most teachers have to work part time jobs, and that’s if they aren’t already working a second job. While most teachers do love their job and the students they teach, it IS getting more difficult to live up to the standards set and its increasingly difficult to live off a teachers salary.

Being a teacher is a pretty hard job. No matter what grade you teach, it’s pretty difficult to get everything done in one day (let alone in a school day).

Not only are you dealing with kids all day, you deal with their parents, your administration, the district, and the state, too. While being a teacher is hard work, there’s a silver lining that we professionals like to call–dark humor. Laughing at our struggles, it’s what us teachers do best.
