Guitarist, Former Notting Hillbilly Brendan Croker Dies at 70

- “He was a true artist in every way,” Mark Knopfler says

Guitarist Brendan Croker, who played with Mark Knopfler in the Notting Hillbillies, has died.

Croker was 70 and “succumbed to leukaemia,” Knopfler said in a “sad farewell” to his former bandmate. He did not say when Croker died.

“He was a true artist in every way, appeared eccentric to many but was positive, brave and generous to a fault,” Knopfler said. “We had many happy years sharing music including touring and singing … in the Notting Hillbillies.”

Croker founded the 5 O’clock Shadows in the mid-1980s and in 1990, teamed with Knopfler, Guy Fletcher and Steve Phillips to form the Hillbillies. The band made one album, Missing ... Presumed Having a Good Time.

Phillips credited his friend and collaborator with “encourag(ing) me to keep playing when I had given up all hope of trying to make a living as a musician.

“He has been a massive part of my life and he will be so dearly missed,” Phillips said.

Years of climbing was supposed to prepare her for aches. A soreness that clung to her muscles for days after the woodsy lodge exploded in the light of early dawn. Mines searched and no body found. Six words that still hung in her chest, aching. ( not again she lost someone again. ) So she went back to what worked out aches, she kept climbing. Mountaintop after mountaintop she conquered just to work out the ache. At nights she would shoot up from bed in a cold sweat as the boy’s voice she failed echoed in her mind. (“ D—don’t hit me anymore please.” ) She squeezes her eyes shut she didn’t deserve to cry. There wasn’t any point, the ache still yanked from behind her ribs no matter how many tears she cried. She felt hopeless, aimless in life just scaling a mountain she couldn’t see the peak of. Two whole years of climbing took her to a bookstore in a quint town tucked away in The Rockies. As she reads through the pages of a horror novel the author’s voice woven through the writing speaks louder and louder. The ache dulls for a moment and that’s all she needed. For the next few weeks she poured through publishing websites, online news articles and more books. The best part about having chronically absent parents was that no one was home to check where she went. After chasing ghost-writer address after ghost writer she was on the doorstep of the peak she had been clawing toward. Something had to make the aching end, anything and that release when first hearing that voice in those pages was it. It was clear then that she had to face him again. She had to talk to Josh. Now the climber was facing her fear once again, staring down the wooden door was all she could do to keep surviving. Was that vertigo she was sensing ? ? ( Just breathe and keep moving up. ) The knock is brisk but assertive enough , she hoped. / @lifesliced was home.. ❛  Josh ? ? You there ? ❜
