WHEN HOME BECOMES YOU CHAPTER 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
/ Hello!! Hey!! At last Chapter 3 has arrived. I know the set up has been long but finally their worlds collide in Chapter 4. Things are going places. Thank you for sticking by me!!
/ I want to preface this by saying I know NOTHING about motorcycles. I’m doing research but mostly flying blind
/ Thank you so much to @taeminsung, my lovey dear helped me come up with some things for this chapter and the last. your help was GREATLY appreciated.
/ Genre: Fluff, comfort, angst (if you squint)
/ Warnings: Anxiety, Fear, Felix is sad, talks of food, swearing?? (knowing me yeah..)
/ Summary:
“Promise promise??”
“Promise, promise,” he gave Felix a good squeeze before he reached into his sweatpants to fish out his own phone. “How about we get the others in here yeah?? Then we can laugh at the videos,” he felt Felix giggle into his chest as he typed a message into the group chat.
“Still not funny,”
“I thought it was quite funny,” the rest of the tour in America went well, their new album was a hit all around the world. He was happy. Without a doubt, yet when their plane landed in South Korea he felt relief.
Tumblr media
When you crawled into bed (Axel’s couch) that morning..seeing as it was 1 am when you two managed to get back from the concert you barely managed to strip to your underwear before you passed out. With no plans of waking before 12 the next day. Not a chance. But come morning Axel had other plans. At 10 you were rudely forced from your blissful slumber by the sound of the coffee grinder. The shrill sound had you groaning as you shoved your head into the couch in hopes it drowned out the sound further.
“Morning,” you groaned louder at the greeting. Your response to him was your middle finger high in the air. “Did you check your email??” He asked when your cup of coffee was settled on your designated coffee table coaster. He kicked your legs out of the way as he sat on the couch.
“No,” you grunted as you sat up, hair stuck out of your braid in all directions, a blanket still wrapped around you. “Why do you care so much??”
“Dunno. Just open it,” he pointed to your phone watching with a pointed look as you lifted it off the floor where you deposited it early that morning.
“It’s dead,” you tossed it into the couch before you leaned forward to sip at your coffee. “Mm perfect,”Axel took your phone and reached behind the couch where the designated living room charger lived right there. He shoved the port into your phone and watched as the 0% display appeared. He fiddled with it a moment before he stood.
“Guess we'll just have to have breakfast first,” he left you there on the couch back to the kitchen to make something for the two of you to eat.
“Let me help,” you offered as you slipped your legs into a spare set of sweats you deposited on the floor many nights ago. With the two of you working, breakfast was made fast. The pure bliss of comfortable silence fell over you both as you settled down at the dining room table. The mid morning light cast a soft light as it peeled through the half open curtains at the balcony window. It was pleasant, a calm morning. Something you had desired in the recent weeks. It was just as you finished that you saw your phone screen light up with the indication it had finally powered on. Axel took your empty plate with a wiggle of his eyebrows.
“Go on!!” You shook your head as you wandered back to the couch. The first thing that caught your attention was a missed call from your boss, their voicemail. Then lastly the title of the email that had been sent last night. You started there, the email. The title of it in all bold letters across the front of your screen was enough to grab your attention. The contents were unbeknownst to you. ‘Congratulations Y/N.
You have now completed the training program for international security!! It’s time to pick the place you’ll go!! Thank you for your dedication to this team.
Good Evening Y/N,
We are proud to announce after having participated in tonight’s event you have finished all of your training and qualifications for the international program. 6 months of hard work have paid off!! Based on your skills and abilities Halo Safety and Security have picked these three locations for your next 6 months. Once you have decided where you would like to go please contact your supervisor for further transfer details
Sydney Australia: Sydney Opera House
Paris France: Louvre Museum
Seoul South Korea: JYP Entertainment
Thank you once again for your dedication to this company
Warm Regards,
HSS Upper Management,’
You paused, read it again then looked at Axel.
“I shouldn’t have qualified,” confusion was written all over your face. The training program you entered 6 months ago should have been void due to your inactivity with the company this last month. This program had been your dream since the minute you knew you could do it. Not only traveling abroad but seeing the world had been a huge part of what you wanted to do in life. Axel stood in the kitchen, a toothy grin shining over his face as he looked at your confused stare. Your stare down ended when your phone vibrated in your hand. When you looked down your supervisor's name flashed across the screen her contact photo along with it. You were quick to answer having missed her first call.
“Did you pick??”
“Hello to you too Ivory. No I haven’t. I..I just saw the email. How did I even qualify??”
“All you were missing was attending an event where you were security at a high volume event with an international group,” you paused, eyes back on Axel as you flipped him off. It all made sense why he dragged you to that event. “Look Y/N I know how important this program is to you. If you can make a choice in an hour I can have you on a flight to your new job today,” fuck..she was fast. But you had also given her the full details of your life over the last month. She has been so kind and offered you all the support she could muster from inside the company. You’d never forget the kindness she showed to you the day you showed up at her office with a bruised face and a broken heart. Ivory and Axel were the two people who saved you that night. Something you vowed to never forget.
“Korea. I want to go to Seoul, South Korea,” it was a no-brainer, after years of studying the language and culture there was no place you’d rather take a job. “And the bike. I want to take the Ninja with me,”
“Done. I’ll see you at HSS’s private plane. I’ll send the transfer paperwork and job details to your email. You can read them on the flight over to your new job. Good luck Y/N you deserve this,” when the dial tone of Ivory hanging up the call had met your ears the first thing you did was wrap your arms around Axel’s torso. You held on tight to the man. Your best friend just made your dream come true.
“Go pack ducky,” he shoved you lightly off and watched as you scampered to the corner of the room that held your boxes. “I’ll mail you what you don’t take,” you nodded, you didn’t need or want much. Not when the job of your dreams had just been gifted to you. One bag, that’s all you needed. In under twenty minutes you were dressed in your riding attire backpack in hand helmet under your arm. Down in the parking garage Axel held onto your bag as he watched you pull the cover off your Kawasaki Ninja Motor Bike. You hadn’t touched it in months but the familiar roar of the engine as it rumbled with life under your legs was enough for your heart to explode. It was only then did you take your backpack from Axel. It settled on your back with an even weight your gps displayed your route to the private airlines. It would only take you 40 minutes maximum to get there. It left you the perfect amount of time.
“I’ll text you when I land,”
“I promise Ducky. He won’t find you,” you smiled at your dearest friend, your savior.
“If he does I’ll handle it,” you pat his face just as your helmet settled into place on your head. “See you on the other side Dopey,” with one final fit bump you were sent on your way. The heavy rumble of the engine provided an added comfort as you tore out onto the streets. Part of you wondered..a distant thought. The man with the dreamer eyes, maybe he was your savior in some way too.
**** **** **** ****
It didn’t take long for social media to EXPLODE with his stage accident. Fans had captured his tumble from all angles. Cameras focused on him the moment he fell, to the help from security, to Bangchan getting him back onto the stage. Felix was the first to see the edits. They all knew he’d fallen off the stage. There wasn’t any sense in hiding it. Especially after you had come to the dressing room to check on his condition. It was funny the seven pairs of eyes that bore holes into the back of his head when the word fall was mentioned. So it wasn’t a surprise that three nights later when they’d settled into the new hotel at the new location a loud knock was heard from his door. When he opened it he wasn’t surprised to find Yongbok was the one standing there, phone in hand, a video on replay. The music looped with the horrid front view of Changbin’s stage accident. He laughed as he watched the video Felix had on play. It was funny to see the blurred mass he was take a near literal stage dive.
“It’s not funny!!” Felix barked, his tone shifted Changbin’s eyes from the video to Felix. Oh..the young Australian was taking this seriously. Despite the constant assurances he was fine, Changbin could see what had happened to him, and now the edits frightened the blonde.
“Oh Bokkie,” he dragged the Australian into his hotel room, his arms wrapped tight around the teary eyed boy. “I’m okay. Nothing happened to me. I promise I am okay,”
All of them missed home in their own little way. Changbin missed the city and the hustle and bustle of familiarity. His bed though yeah that’s what he missed most. Maybe not most but after a shower to pile into his sheets for a nap. It was a perfect way to end the long travels they’d been on. JYP had told the group that they had 3 days to take off. In that time they could do whatever they desired. Though none of them took it. By mid afternoon each of them were at the company building. Changbin wanted to continue his work with Bangchan in the studio. He was sure he saw Danceracha “hidden” away in one of the dance rooms. Han joined them on the couch being their personal TikTok filmer for the day. Changbin wasn’t sure where Seungmin and I.N. Wandered off too but it was likely they were tucked away for vocal practice and lessons. That left him and Chan. When he opened the door to the studio he was unsurprised to find Chan already there laptop open, headphones on. Changbin tapped his shoulder as he settled his bag down at his usual chair. Chan looked up, tipped his head back and acknowledged him before he sat in his chair. Days off really weren’t a thing for Stray Kids. Why would it when you not only loved what you did. But you could spend your free time perfecting what you felt you lacked.
“Be sure to check your email Bin. JYP left us some notes on a few tracks. He scheduled a producer to come in and work with us next week. I also emailed you our schedules for Comeback it starts in two weeks,”
“No rest for the wicked,” Changbin laughed as he fished out his laptop and a notepad he always kept with him. Any important notes he needed to know were pinned to a board in his room at home. As he shifted through his email he made sure to read and note anything important before moving each piece of mail into its perspective folder. The level of organization he kept was fast, be it better than the other boys. Still chaos to the untrained eye but he could find what he needed in seconds. After he sifted most of the emails a new one appeared. The distant chime of Chan’s abandoned phone was heard as it came through to his fellow band member.
“Is it important??” Chan asked as he used the distraction to stretch his back out headphones now dropped around his neck.
“Uhh,” the shorter of the two refocused his energy into reading the email title. “JYP Entertainment is Proud to announce??” With a quirk of Chan’s brow he continued to read the full email. “Dearest Company, as you well know the safety protocols and regulations of our Idols and Staff is top priority here at JYP entertainment. That is why we are proud to announce a special partnership with a private security organization called ‘Halo Safety and Security’. After their work with us in the United States we are confident that they will provide the utmost security to our company. All idols and staff that work with our idols will be fitted with a detailed team. ‘Halo Safety and Security’ is an international based company, most of the selected team members were selected here in Korea. But some will come from other countries. Please provide them with care and hospitality as they settle into their roles amongst your team. Further details will be given to each idol, and staff individually as necessary. Thank you for your time today. Sincerely, JYP community and HR team,” there was a deep pause in the room as both men pondered the contents of the email they had just received.
“Well..shit,” Chan chuckled. “That’s a surprise. I know JYP does care about security but this..”
“It’s different. We will have a team that goes with us everywhere. Rather than teams that are fitted by location, or tour,” Changbin liked the idea of having a familiar security team on hand. Over the years it had become hard to fully trust the security teams the company had hired for them. Being so temporary most of the time it was hard to know the team at all. Putting your life in the hands of strangers was hard for anyone. But Changbin knew the members of his band, himself included, had an extra hard time due to different and difficult experiences they’d had.
“I’ll be sure the rest read the email,” Chan stated as he typed a quick message into the team chat before he slipped his headphones back on. Their short reprieve from work was done. Not that they were supposed to be at work anyway. Changbin thought back to his time in America, specifically his fall. He’d wondered if you were part of the same security company. He knew it was wishful thinking for sure. But it would be nice to have someone like you on their team. He didn’t get much “work” that afternoon, his brain flooded with new ideas. A self indulgent piece, maybe it was his way of piecing together his scrambled thoughts. But one thing was for sure. He couldn’t stop thinking about you, who you were, and the missed opportunity to know the name of the woman with the most whimsical smile. He felt a fool for having never asked your name.

No. 17 - 2012
Character: Erza Scarlet (Armorless ver.)  Series: Fairy Tail by Mashima Hiro
Cosplayer Credits: - Natsu : My brother - Gray : Jaiden - Lucy : Eridan
Photog Credits: - Axel - David Ho - Nikki Smith Photography
==========
This is genuinely one of my absolute favorite costumes, and one of the ones I'm still so proud of today!
Like Shiki, I decided to make this particular version of Erza's because I saw an opportunity to make something I'd always wanted to make: a hakama! Does she actually wear a hakama? Not really, but who cares?!
==========
My wig is from Epic Cosplay Wigs. The top is two parts. The first was made from white spandex and is essentially a tube top. I then cover it with drug-store gauze that sticks to itself once it's in place. The bottom, which you can't really see, is made from the same white spandex as the top. I made a pattern from a pair of tights I already had only it goes down to just before my knees.
The hakama is made from red denim-like cotton. I used Folkwear pattern 151, Hakama and Kataginu. I used appliqué (HeatnBond Lite) for the flames at the bottom; the fabrics were similar to the red. For my back board, I fused some spare red to a few pieces of 16th of an inch-thick piece of interfacing. It is washable this way but still stiff as a board and bendable like professional hakama.
I originally wanted to do the tattoo with Hollywood Ink Henna pens and a stencil, but when we got to the convention Friday, we saw they had temporary tattoos in all of the colors we needed and we figured that'd be easier and faster. Plus, most of us were wearing things the next day that would've shown the guildmark so we didn't want them to clash. I later bought actual temp tattoo pens from Stargazers.
I made Benizakura to go with this costume in 2017. It is made of 1/4 plywood for the core blade and hilt. The tsuba (guard) is made of 3/4 plywood that I sanded down to about 5/16 of an inch. I also sanded the hilt pieces from 1/4 to about 1/8 so the hilt came to 1/2 an inch. I used thin foam to finish the designs: the over-layer on the tsuba, the swirls on the hilt, and the pummel. Lastly, the tassel is made out of actual tassel, three wooden craft beads painted red, and screw in loop painted gold. The tassel was beaded and then, after strung through the loop, glue into the top bead.
And speaking of late add-ons... I also didn't have the time to make her earrings but I did eventually, so look out for them in some of these shots. They are made out of a half-inch square acrylic rod that I sanded down using a grinder wheel. A friend carefully drilled a small hole for the wire that I twisted, covered with a bead, and attached to a clamp earring, since I don't have pierced ears. Everything was spray painted to match.
Now my brother's costume was also a lot of fun to make. Aside from his height, he really does have a lot in common with Natsu, so it was a lot of fun to be these two. We got the wig from Fantasy Sheep on eBay; came pre-styled.
The scarf was made out of white fleece. Essentially, I made a pillowcase-like piece, inserted a thin layer of polyfoam, sewed the fringes between the "pillowcase"'s sides as it was shut, and sewed the different sections with black thread. I'm very proud of it because it bulges up and sections off like the references.
I used dark navy blue broadcloth for the front fabric and I insisted it should be reversable as per the Tenroujima Arc, I used grey broadcloth as the lining fabric. The trim is gold poly-cotton. I modified a simple shirt pattern I already had as the vest was not very complicated. We actually bought both the belt buckle and interchangeable belt from PiercingPros on Amazon.
Same fabric and idea as the vest, for the "skirt." I measured his waist, marking the middle, and then halving that measurement to add to it to get the bottom measurement, lining up the middles. (In case that was confusing, here's a formula: W = waist measurement; B = Bottom measurement; W + (W/2) = B) It connects at the top, under the belt with hook-n-eye clasps.
I modified the pants pattern from Kouma. I used white broadcloth held up with an elastic waistband. The calf ties are extra navy broadcloth fashioned like trim after bunching the ends of the pants and have hook and eye clasps on the inside seam. The knots are made separately and then sewn into place They were actually made by my friend Kirky.

Upgrade hand grinder from Time more chestnut G1. Only drip coffee.
Upgrade hand grinder from Time more chestnut G1. Only drip coffee. I’m tired of all the small problems the grinder has and want to upgrade. I don’t have any specific budget. I just want a problem free and good grinder. The grinder I have right now loses the axel screw after 15 seconds and I got uneven grind. The container fell of if you isn’t careful and it’s not a pleasant experience to grind more than 30 gram. Submitted January 16, 2023 at 02:30AM by andigo https://ift.tt/46gxpvR via /r/Coffee

Go well, Celia
The first time I saw Celia Mancini was on celluloid.
Three years ago, my flatmates and I headed out in the rain to catch a screening of Margaret Gordon’s documentary about the Christchurch band Into the Void at Alice’s, a theatre in the centre of town that holds about 30 people.
Most of the documentary consisted of the band laughing about how they drank together far more often than they made music.
But the atmosphere changed when a clip from King Loser’s ’76 Come Back Special video jumped off the screen. A presence appeared: a femme fatale with jet black hair and red lips. She sprinted in short heels through the streets of Auckland, picking off men with whatever she had lying around: a car, a rifle, a karate chop.

“Wow,” I breathed.
Tumblr media
Onto the next one... Still from the ‘76 Come Back Special video. Get it, Celia.
One of the people she murdered in the video was her bandmate Chris Heazlewood. Their personalities sparked when they met in Auckland in 1992. Celia spit venom, and Chris liked it. Celia liked him, too. King Loser was born shortly afterwards.

“That whole video was all her idea!” he cried. “She’s got a real good eye for iconography. She was like, ‘I need to be in a black vinyl catsuit, and I need to be killing everybody, and I need to die at the end.’”
Celia was larger than life. She was also still very much alive. Unlike the actual members of Into the Void, who were somewhat useless at remembering the finer details of their history, Celia had scrapbooks full of newspaper clippings. More than 20 years after the fact, she still had everything saved, as if she always knew that someone would need it one day. She was a rock star and an archivist. My heart glowed. As disparate as our lives seemed, I could relate to her in that one small way.
Media is often talked about as if it is some evil, homogenous lump of globalised ephemera with no real connection to anything or anyone other than capitalism and corporate profits. But in New Zealand, people step out of celluloid and cross over from the screen into everyday life all the time. You just have to know where to look, and who to find.
At one point in the documentary, Into the Void played in a gravel lot on High Street where their practise room used to be. One kid watched from the sidewalk, his hair bouncing. An hour after the screening, Mary and I were at the darkroom, and so was he.
“We just saw your movie,” we crooned. “Loved your scene.”
Though Celia first became known for her presence in Christchurch bands like The Stepford 5 and The Axel Grinders in the 80s, she didn’t live in Christchurch anymore.
(You can hear one of The Stepford 5′s songs here).
Although King Loser was born in Auckland, the band also lived in Dunedin for a bit. Part of that history included joining Peter Gutteridge in a reformed line-up of Snapper. The New Zealand poet David Merritt referred to their triumvirate as “an axis of good and evil”.

Though their relationship didn’t last, they remained close friends.

Celia always used to introduce Chris to people with the line, “And this is my guitarist, Chris Heazlewood.” Photo courtesy of Chris Heazlewood, who said: “Note proprietary position of hand on shoulder.”
Celia’s and my paths first crossed two years ago in a bar on Karangahape Road in Auckland. Though I had killed a lot of time on K Road – I had written a novel there in another life, years before moving to the South Island – I had never seen Celia before. This time around, I was doing an oral history project on Peter Gutteridge. This time, I knew who I was looking for.
Chris Heazlewood was playing at the Audio Foundation, though I missed it (what gig finishes by ten?). Apparently, Celia appeared with a drummer and demanded that they play. Chris conceded. They smashed it.
After the show I ended up at Verona, and Celia was there too, in a black silk dress. Her arm was in a cast. One of her front teeth was chipped. The bar was loud and crowded. She talked with a drawl, and a bit under her breath. Her words rolled together like liquid and I couldn’t make out a thing she said. After a few moments she held up her cigarette and announced: “I’ll leave you for more conversation with this one.” She nodded to me. “Scintillating.” That I understood. I broke into a smile. I had just been insulted, but I didn’t care. She was funny.
Later that night a boy at the bar leaned in my face when he heard I was writing about Peter Gutteridge.
“Who?” the boy spat.
“He’s a musician,” I replied.
“Who?” he asked again, louder.
“Uh…” I tried to think of which band to mention first.
“I know who he is,” the boy seethed. “He was a friend of mine. Do you think he would have wanted you to write about him?”
He hit a nerve. I almost cried.
Celia wasn’t like that at all upon learning I wanted to write about Peter.
“I have no questions to ask you,” she said. “I’m just grateful.” She championed the project to several of their mutual friends, and put me in touch with all of them.
We did her oral history on a sunny winter day in Auckland in 2015. Celia didn’t have a permanent address, so we met at her friend’s flat in Grey Lynn.
Celia wanted food: she requested a pizza with anchovies, capers, and olives. I had a rockmelon. “Bring both if you can,” Celia said. Before I left, she doubled down. “I’m not joking about the rockmelon. I am half Indian, you know.”
When I arrived, Celia was waiting in the backyard.
“Hi!” I said as I approached. “I’m Hannah.”
She smiled slow. “I know.”
I had brought along the rockmelon, but by that point it had been long forgotten.
Oral histories ought to be recorded somewhere quiet, but Celia wanted to go find some sun.
“Lindsay, we need your keys,” Celia announced to her friend. “Hannah’s going to borrow your car.” It came off a bit abrupt, but Lindsay didn’t seem to mind. He tossed me his keys. I also needed power; he handed me eight rechargeable batteries and told me to keep them.
Boxes of Celia’s archives formed towers around Lindsay’s toilet. Even though she didn’t have a home, she hadn’t lost them. Her friends seemed unusually patient and generous.
As I drove, Celia drank.
“I'm a bit confused lately because I don’t live in Auckland,” Celia said. “I really want to be going home. I’ve been trying for two years.”
“Where’s home?” I asked.
She looked as me as if I was blind. “Dunedin!” she cried. “Always.”
We ended up on a park bench near the lake in Western Springs, where ducks were basking in the late afternoon sun.
Celia poured whiskey into a mug from her flask. “Would you like a drink, darling?” She doled out the word darling like candy.
“I would, but I can’t,” I protested. “I drove us here. I need to drive us home!”
Celia’s mind moved a mile a minute. As she talked, her words started to blur again, and I struggled to separate them, just like at the bar. My replies were flat. Most of the time I managed only a generic response once she had finished. “Oh. Hm.” I wondered if she was making any sense.
Later, when I listened back and slowed down the recording, Celia was totally lucid, and I sounded like an idiot. She would go off on three separate tangents in the middle of a sentence – but at the end of every sentence, she offered up about seven ideas.
Much of what Celia said blasted apart the two-dimensional statements that have been repeated so many times about rock music in New Zealand, they are often passed off as truisms. One is that the scene is full of amateurs who learned by the seat of their pants.
Celia didn’t ascribe to any of that bullshit. She loved classical music, played ragtime and honky-tonk on the piano from the age of five, and was a brass player in several orchestras as a kid.
Tumblr media
And then she fucking rocked.
Another one of the two-dimensional truisms was that being on stage came with no pretence. Everyone wore street clothes.
Celia didn’t give a fuck about precedents. The world was her stage, and she was going to own it.
youtube

“People turned their back on the audience,” Roy Colbert told me over coffee. “Then, here comes Celia walking the stage like it’s a runway in a nightie. People had never seen anything like it before. Jaws were on the floor.” Roy laughed.
Celia and I reminisced about Peter and purred.
“I miss his tone of voice,” she said.
“So gentle,” I agreed.
She smiled. “So sweet.”
Although our first encounter was a bit acerbic, Celia treated me like gold ever since I wrote about Peter. She said my dissertation rendered her speechless. A rarity, one of her friends mused. Don’t worry, another chimed in. I’m sure it’ll wear off soon. Her reputation remained contentious, but she also remembered my birthday.
About a year later, word spread that King Loser had started to play together again. Shows were scheduled across the islands for September. As the dates neared, rumours rumbled through Dunedin that communication in the band had started to break down. There was talk the band might not make it.
But they did—curiosity regarding their arrival turned into cries of lament from Port Chalmers that Celia had demanded the entire stage be moved at the last minute.
Danny and Nikolai of Elan Vital had been drinking at Mou to mourn its last day before being sold; a brief sojourn to pick them along the way turned into a two-hour detour.
“Have shots with us,” they pressed.
“I’ll have a beer; I can’t have shots though,” I said. “I really want us to make this show.”
That night outside the Tunnel Hotel, the atmosphere was giddy. Nikolai leapt at Danny and pulled down his pants. Renee was draped over the fence outside the hotel in a fur coat, eyes glistening and grin demented. King Loser was back.
Chris Heazlewood passed us on the street on the way in.
I lit up. “You made it!”
“Agh,” he muttered. “Dragged that bitch all the way from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South...”
I smiled. “Well, we’re glad you did.”
The bar was packed. There were black leather miniskirts that looked like they had been dusted off from 20 years back.
There was no sign of Celia. Sometime after midnight, the band started to play without her. Eventually Celia stalked in an oversized fur coat from stage right. Her hair was teased and piled up a mile high over a white collared shirt buttoned up her neck and a black silk tie.
Tumblr media

Celia threw her coat behind her over a lamp. Their drummer—Lance Strickland, aka Tribal Thunder—carefully removed it.
Once they started playing, it all came together. Chris and Celia taunted one another. Lance was on point. At one point Celia almost knocked the keyboard into the audience, but Lance leapt out and caught it. Elan Vital and Death and the Maiden threw themselves into each other in front of the band, manic.
“I love you Celia!” Renee crowed.
“Another whiskey, please, somebody?” Celia posited to the audience.
“Somebody get her a whiskey!” Renee hollered, carrying the decibel of the request over to the bar.
“Thought she wasn’t going to make it for a minute there,” I mused to Roy Colbert, who happened to be standing in front of me.
“Don’t be fooled,” he said. “Celia wanted all eyes on her. She loved it.”
Word of King Loser quieted down a bit again after the shows.
The following summer I moved to North East Valley, and not long after that cycled past Chris Heazlewood walking a dog along North Road.
“King Loser is playing at the Crown this Sunday afternoon,” Chris said. “So, Celia’s down obviously.”
The cover charge was only five dollars. My whole flat came; those with a bit of extra money covered for the ones who couldn’t afford it.
By the time I arrived, Connie Benson was on her last song. Afterwards, King Loser were even tighter than before. There was no false starts, no long wait. The first song came like a bullet train. Wham! Celia introduced another. Wham! Then another came straight after, without any introduction. Wham!
youtube

“Shall we have Connie Benson come up and play our last song with us?” Celia asked before the set ended.
The crowd cheered. Connie’s eyes widened.
“Come on, Connie.” Celia started a chant. “Connie! Connie!”
Connie slowly took her guitar out of the case.
Connie glanced between Celia and Chris as the band launched into a riff. She watched Chris’ fingers and slowly started to imitate them. Lance lifted his chin at Connie, encouraging her to go faster.
Celia stopped the song after about 30 seconds. ““All right, Connie,” Celia insisted until the beast ground to a halt, it’s E, F#, A...” Celia rattled off the notes they were playing.
I melted for the girl for being put on the spot to play a song that she didn’t know. Connie didn’t seem to mind, though.
“Isn’t she amazing?” Celia asked the audience at the end. “Connie Benson!” I couldn't tell whether Celia had been trying to humiliate her, or not. Celia ran over to Connie after the set.

“Man,” my flatmate Caitlin marvelled. “What do you think she is like in person?”
“I’ve met her a few times,” I said. “I think what you see is what you get.”
Caitlin wouldn’t have to wonder for long. That weekend, Celia turned up at our flatwarming in the valley with a small entourage round midnight.
Marcus apologised on her behalf. “You know Celia,” he said. “She wanted to make an entrance.”
“Doesn’t matter,” I smiled. “Come as you are, whenever you like.”
It was a great night. Celia insulted the music, the lighting, and everyone at the party straightaway.
“What is this?” Celia’s head swiveled. “You’re living in some student flat?”
Tumblr media
Yes. But it has a band room...
Caitlin tried to tell her a joke. Celia didn’t let her finish. “I’ve got a joke!” she declared. Then she forgot the ending, and cracked herself up anyway.
Caitlin stared. “I’m laughing. Your joke is really funny.”
“Cunt!” Celia crowed.
Caitlin put an arm on her shoulder. “Celia. I’m glad you’re here. But this is my house…”
Celia had already moved onto the record player. I tried to apologise for Celia, but Caitlin didn’t care. “Oh, I think she decided I was all right in the end.”
“What is this music?” Celia cried. My flatmates had put on something... electronic. “Change it!” she hollered.
I was more hesitant. “Someone wanted to hear this...”
“Put something that you like on,” Celia insisted. “You have good taste.”
She had no knowledge of my taste, but was charming enough to get people to go along in spite of how little what was said stacked up against facts.
At one point she sallied up next to me as I messed around on the organ in our hall. “That’s really good,” she encouraged, her eyes locked onto mine.
Immediately after I put on some rock and roll, a boy started dancing in our lounge with a broom.
Celia smiled. “See?” She cranked up the volume.
“We have to keep it down,” my flatmate Icky insisted. “Noise control already came. I don’t want my stereo taken away.”
“The neighbours only called noise control because of that shithouse music you were playing before,” Celia insisted. “They didn’t like the BASS. It has to do with FREQUENCY. This is a higher frequency, it’s fine.” She cranked the volume back up on her way out to the backyard.
Icky stared after her. “I think I’m in love.” He turned it back down once she had left.
“This lighting is awful,” Celia mused. “Lighting can make or break a party.” We turned a few lights off. “Better,” she insisted.
“She wasn’t that bad,” my flatmate Jenny said later on. “She wasn’t causing drama for the sake of it. Everything she was saying was about trying to make the party better.”
Celia was still putting records on when I slithered off to bed around two in the morning. The next day my flatmates told me that she was one of the last to leave.
Our time together was so short when compared with those who loved her and spent decades by her side. Yet as her spirit drifts from the bottom of the South Island to the top of the North Island and flies out over Cape Reinga, it feels still like I ought to share the little that I knew. If there was a legacy to carry forwards from the short time I spent with Celia, it was to engage. Celia can be channeled anytime someone moves with a certain modus operandi: Pay no mind to precedents. Focus on making the music good. Improve the party.
I have been lucky enough to find something in New Zealand, though I can’t quite yet describe it. If all of the people who had an impact on each other’s lives all over these islands could be seen at once, it would light up the night like rich constellations in a cloudless winter sky. But as time passes, clouds are forming. The brightest lights are slowly fading, and some are disappearing altogether from sight.
Yesterday, another soft glowing star faded from the constellations that tell the story of a time and a place.
Go well, Celia.

Celia Mancini (King Loser) Interview
New Zealand rock ‘n’ roller Celia Mancini is the genuine article. She’s been hit by cars, broken bones at venues and yet continues to come back for more, no stranger to playing shows likely against doctor’s orders.
Performing since the 1980s, Mancini’s played in various bands whose influence can’t be measured in record sales and whose music generally ran contrary to what was popular in New Zealand at the time. (Take her former band, Christchurch’s seminal the Axel Grinders, who would’ve been more at home on Estrus Records than Kiwi label Flying Nun. In fact, the group only released a record on American Lee Joseph’s Dionysus imprint.) Celia is best known for starting King Loser with Chris Heazlewood; the duo also backed Peter Gutteridge in a 1990s incarnation of Snapper. Celia stresses that King Loser was “never a Flying Nun band,” which is true. Nevertheless, Flying Nun released three King Loser albums in the 1990s, all of them musically varied—from surf rock to experimental—and excellent. When the group ground down in the late ‘90s, Celia formed the short-lived Mothertrucker.
King Loser has been active again. Late last year (2016) they toured New Zealand. The shows were filmed by Andrew Moore and a King Loser documentary appears to be in the works. As mentioned earlier, Mancini is no stranger to injury and is currently recuperating from injuries sustained from getting hit by a car; she’s currently biding her time on house arrest. King Loser is set to record and start again once Celia breaks free from the long arm of the law.
Interview by Ryan Leach
Tumblr media
Ryan: Did you grow up in Christchurch?
Celia: No. I was actually born in Auckland. I had a really good childhood—one of the best in the world. I’d go sailing and shit like that. My dad was a doctor. My mother’s side was from Scotland. She was fifth-generation Port Chalmers which is part of Dunedin. I realized Auckland sucked by 1985, so I went down and lived in Christchurch.
Ryan: You skateboarded when you lived in Auckland, didn’t you?
Celia: I was a New Zealand skateboarding champ in 1976. There are photos of me that I still have from the newspaper. I was really interested in sports when I was in school. In the 1970s, I was doing slalom. I always rode my trucks loose as. We’d clean up the trophies. It was wide open. There was no designation for men and women in the competitions then. I started skating again in the 1980s. I remember buying a Vision board. I’d skate with my boombox, listening to the Beastie Boys.
In 1988, Duane Zarakov, who was an early drummer for King Loser, asked me to play in his band The Axel Grinders. I was up in Auckland again at the time for some reason. I would move all over the country. I wasn’t into one scene. I remember getting Duane’s postcard to move down so I quit my job. I was in Christchurch two days later. They went from being a covers band to performing original material. We started writing songs together.
Ryan: Had the Axel Grinders released their sole vinyl release yet—the “Apparatus of Love” single on Dionysus?
Celia: No. I wrote “Apparatus of Love,” but they recorded that later on. I had gotten Rita (Le Quesne) to replace me and she appeared on that one. I had gotten kicked out of the Axel Grinders for being too Iggy. They were a bit jealous because I was playing in four different bands and managed Into the Void. Rita played in one of my other bands, The Stepford 5, who had a release on Munster Records. I had a group called The Ono Band which was a Beatles cover band that had some members of Into the Void in it. I also had a lounge band in the ‘80s. David Bowie’s entertainment lawyer was in Christchurch and he used to see us. It was very flashy and we’d play very nice places. All of that was fine by me because we liked the music and I loved the dresses. David Bowie’s entertainment lawyer said we were the best lounge act he’d ever seen. This was sort of pre-lounge, though. I called the music “easy listening.” I’d make enough money off the lounge band to support my rock bands.
Ryan: Was the lounge group the one you had with Bill Vosburgh (Perfect Strangers), After Dinner Mints?
Celia: He was in After Dinner Mints and we also had a duo. Not many people know about the duo we had. Christchurch was really amazing.
Ryan: Right around the time you and Chris (Heazlewood) got King Loser together, you were also both playing in a latter incarnation of Snapper.
Celia: Chris and I were in Dunedin. We had formed King Loser before we joined Snapper. We are both so flexible—into different styles of music. I had just arrived back to New Zealand from a trip I had taken to the States. Pete needed a keyboard player so he asked me to join. And of course, Chris was in on guitar. It was great playing with Peter; we spent a lot of time together. Gutman and I blended so well. Peter had stage fright. He used to drink vodka before playing; skull it. That’s all it was. Chris and I heard some tapes last year of our time in Snapper. We really liked them. I told Chris, “Chris, I thought we were shit in Snapper. This sounds quite good.” Chris said, “I thought so too!”
It was incredibly sad when Peter died. I was busy in court for some rubbish. Heazlewood was on the phone getting Gutman back from Los Angeles to Auckland. We got him back and then he died shortly afterwards.
Ryan: You appear on Snapper’s A.D.M. (1996) record. Snapper was essentially Gutteridge and Mike Dooley by that point, correct?
Celia: Yeah. Brendan Hoffman was involved too. He was a sound-mixer guy. He lives in the States now. Chris and I were quite busy with King Loser by that point so we couldn’t really play with Peter anymore. A.D.M. wasn’t recorded how I would have liked to have heard it recorded. Pete’s vocals needed to be more pronounced. Simple, little Phil Spector things would have helped a lot.
Ryan: I like the single you released on Flying Nun, “Kiasu” (1996).
Celia: I did that in one afternoon! I fucked around, fucked around and then they needed the tracks. I made up “Kiasu” on the spot.
Ryan: What was your relationship like with Flying Nun? Was Lesley Paris your point of contact at the label?
Celia: Lesley is my second cousin. Paul McKessar was at Flying Nun at the time handling A&R. He was a total cunt. Paul McKessar hated me. Shayne Carter informed me that the label wasn’t too happy with me right before a New Zealand tour. At the end of it we arrived at Flying Nun’s offices in Auckland and Paul McKessar started yelling at me. It was like the voice from the intercom on the cartoon show The Peanuts. Unbelievably, he tried to kick me out of my own band!
Ryan: Did this happen around 1996’s Nunfest and the release of Caul of the Outlaw?
Celia: Yeah. Paul was just an A&R guy. I still can’t believe he tried to kick me out of my own band.
Flying Nun was told by other people to sign us. We didn’t care about being on Flying Nun. David Mitchell (3Ds, Chug, Ghost Club, etc.) was telling Flying Nun about us. We rejected their contracts. We signed a three-record deal and we retained the rights to our work—all our merchandising and publishing. We had the right to release records with other labels as well. When I say we did three records with Flying Nun, one of them (Sonic Super Free Hi-Fi) was a rerelease.
Ryan: Right. That one came out on Turbulence Records first.
Celia: Yeah. They were from Belgium. We’ve honestly got about thirty records completed. Chris and I were and remain prolific. We just couldn’t help it. Sean (O’Reilly) is a songwriter now and he’s doing really well. But, again, we were never a Flying Nun band. I just looked at them as a distributor for our records.
Ryan: Looking back on your three LPs, is there one you prefer over the other two?
Celia: I like them all. And like I said, we’ve got heaps more. When we toured last September (2016), new songs came together. That’s why Chris and I were always recording. We were never certain we’d remember songs later on. We’d record stuff and just shove it into a bloody box. The only time we didn’t do that was when we were consciously making an album. Chris would record us on our reel-to-reel.
Ryan: When Flying Nun was presumably spending more money on records and getting slicker, you and Chris were recording on the cheap on your eight-track.
Celia: We always made our own recordings. We didn’t want to spend thousands of dollars on recordings. We didn’t need to do that.
Ryan: I remember chatting with Andrew Tolley (Hasselhoff Experiment, Blood Bags, Perpetrator Records, etc.) and he mentioned Axel Grinders being revelatory. King Loser as well. You were doing something very unique in New Zealand in the 1990s, especially compared to what was popular at the time.
Celia: I’ve always felt that King Loser was really different from other bands. Axel Grinders were too. King Loser was one of the weirdest bands around. Musically, we were always doing different things. Duane and I used to release Axel Grinders tapes ourselves. We’re starting to digitize all of our old stuff, so it’ll start coming out all over the place. There’s Snapper stuff too.
Ryan: There’s footage of you and Chris playing at your old place on K Road. I heard stories of you guys endlessly recording there.
Celia: Yeah, yeah. We were together then….We went on tour to Australia.
Ryan: Was that the tour with Garageland?
Celia: Fuck that band. We went on tour with Loves Ugly Children as well. Garageland opened for us. People came to see us, not them. We were on every fucking magazine cover in New Zealand. It was kind of weird. Once I get out of my criminal situation and get this damn ankle bracelet off of me I want to go back to Australia. I want to go to Japan too. But this ankle bracelet shit is ridiculous. The judge said I was “a danger to society.” So stupid.
Sean (O’Reilly) lives in Auckland currently. We get together. Tribal Thunder and Chris are in Dunedin. Chris is coming up here to Auckland in about six days. So we’ll have a powwow then. We’re going to record again when I can get mobile.
Ryan: How were those King Loser shows that you played last year (2016)?
Celia: Fucking awesome. Great. I loved it.
Ryan: Isn’t Andrew Moore making a King Loser documentary?
Celia: Yeah. He made a New Zealand skateboard documentary (No More Heroes). He left us ladies out. It was such a small subject. I was a skate champ in ’76. He held a question and answer session after the film premiere in Auckland and I could tell he was frightened when he saw me standing up: “Oh, god, Celia’s grabbing the mic!” I wasn’t going to be unpolite. I politely asked him where the ladies where and walked off. But I guess the film was big for him. We’ll see how the King Loser one shapes up.

10/04/2021 - A Frame Headache
Oh how i wish things like this could be simple, with an opening line like that you can imagine how this went. This job will hopefully rectify the knocking noise that most Defender owners eventually will experience/notice when pulling off in 1st or in reverse. (One of the potential reasons anyway)
There was always an expectation that changing the rear A-frame ball joint wasn't going to be straight forward and even more so when there doesn't seem to be much online coverage of the rover diff axel variant and more the easier Salisbury axel one.
Parts were purchased from Paddock spares, so part numbers won't align with LRworkshop site.
So we'll start with the parts you need;
Fulcrum Bracket inc A Frame Ball Joint (DA1129) Bolts and Nuts Fitting Kit (DA1129KIT)
There was always an expectation that changing the rear A-frame ball joint wasn't going to be straight forward and even more so when there doesn't seem to be much online coverage of the rover diff axel variant and more the easier Salisbury axel one. To remove in situ, will need to modify a standard 30mm socket to get good access by adding a HUGE chamfer to the base of the socket. The proper way and now looking back at it as the sensible way to do this would be to remove the fuel tank subsequently resulting in plenty of room and no tool modification.
The ball joint nut still wouldn't budge that much and required slotting out using a Dremel mill attachment(s) which ended up blunted. This is followed by the x2 bolts that hold the A-frame arms to the axel/bracket, one came off with some great physical effort and the other well... the angle grinder made an appearance.
In the end it was rewarding changing this out and i still have this to do on the 110, But that can wait as it's not necessarily a priority at the moment (I can't be bothered).

Has there been any parts that you guys have enjoyed watching? Like, I know you are seeing yourself in lots of danger and almost dying, but you are all like the main characters in the story, and main characters almost never die in stories.
Jesse: I guess that’s... one way to look at it...
Axel: I mean... knowing no one gets hurt during it, that scene with the grinder was really cool.
Olivia: You’ll find it a lot less cool when we’re living it.
Axel: Eh, my point stands.
