I’ve been rewatching Star Trek: The Original Series instead of starting anything new (of course) and I have some thoughts about season 1! I love this show. Here are some random things I love.

1. Kirk and Spock wordlessly communicating. They’re in love, okay.

2. In ‘The Naked Time’, everything is falling apart, the bridge is in chaos, Kirk loses his temper, Uhura loses her temper. Then Uhura takes a breath, and she is immediately back in ultra professional mode, damn whatever she’s actually thinking and feeling. And Kirk immediately apologizes. It’s amazing.

3. I appreciate random shirtless Kirk. And that time Sulu was randomly shirtless and attacking people with a sword. (The look on the two dudes’ faces when he is brandishing his sword at them in the corridor is PRICELESS.)

4. The unicorn dog. Fave.

5. Spock playing the ka’athyra, and then Uhura sings with him, and she’s totally good-naturedly poking fun at him the whole time, and Spock accepts it with such good humor and he has no feelings my ass.

6. Obviously Kirk’s shirt tearing all the damn time, sometimes with no plausible reason. My favorite is when McCoy just rips the shoulder open to jab him with a hypo on the bridge.

7. There’s some pretty nice work done in the pilot establishing that Kirk and Mitchell have a long history and a deep friendship, and that makes what happens in the episode so much more tragic. I also love Spock’s easy acceptance of Kirk wanting the record to state that Mitchell (and Dehner) died in the line of duty.

8. Uhura competently taking over other positions on the bridge at a word from Kirk. The implication that all members of the bridge crew/senior staff have their specialties but learned all necessary functions in case of emergency is really nice. (I’ve noticed Sulu taking over navigation sometimes, too, and Scotty’s taken the helm at least once, and Kirk himself operates various positions.)

9. One of my favorite things about Star Trek is its optimism, and also the enduring sense of hopefulness and compassion it and the characters embody. In ‘Charlie X’, even after all the shit he did to them, you can see that they are nevertheless moved by Charlie’s genuine terror and Kirk tries to come up with a different solution that will help him. Or in ‘The Corbomite Maneuver’, after the alien has threatened to destroy them, and he puts out the distress call, Kirk’s response is still to help.

10. Kirk is in love with the Enterprise and the show doesn’t even try to be coy about it, it just comes right out and says so. Multiple times. <3

11. It’s clearly a product of its time and some things are... not great, but I love that it tries, and it honestly wants to portray a future where everyone is treated the same and things like race and gender don’t matter, even if it isn’t quite there in the execution of it. (Yeoman Rand in particular gets some wince-worthy moments in the first season, unfortunately.)

12. Evil!Kirk wears eyeliner, because of course he does. LMAO.

13. The green shirt! I love Kirk’s green shirt. (Actually I love the TOS uniforms in general. Best Trek uniforms, fight me.)

14. McCoy and Spock making fun of each other. <3

15. The number of times Scotty tells Kirk he needs hours/days to fix/accomplish something and Kirk is like ‘you have ten minutes’ and Scotty is just like ‘...fuck, okay’.

16. In ‘What Are Little Girls Made Of?’ Kirk sabotages his android by thinking negatively about Spock because THAT’S the thing he knows will make it clear something’s wrong. OMG. And then Spock makes fun of him for using an unsophisticated insult. Hearteyes.

17. Every time Spock calls Kirk Jim. Also, every time Kirk calls McCoy Bones.

18. Their food is hilarious, it always just looks like little colorful blocks. And their idea of futuristic fashion is completely ridiculous and also the best. 

19. Kirk is so charming, but it’s so genuine, which is I think why it’s so devastating. When he’s looking at people, and smiling at them, you know he really genuinely gives a shit, and actually cares about them, and tbh I think I’d do anything he asked if he looked at me like that, lol. 

20. McCoy is a gift. He’s so grumpy! And he calls everyone out on their shit, especially Kirk, and he’d never say so but he cares so goddamn much.

21. I just ship Kirk/Spock so fucking hard, OMG. Every time they interact I’m just like YESSSSSS THEY’RE FUCKING IN LOVE DAMN.

22. “Fascinating.” <33333 Oh! And the eyebrow raise! Especially when he does it at Kirk. Or McCoy.

23. Kirk’s absolute faith in Spock at the beginning of ‘The Menagerie’. It’s a bit heartbreaking, considering. And the moment you can see Spock choose Pike over Kirk, at the end of Part 1, stabs me right in the heart. And when Kirk agrees that Spock is guilty during the “trial”. (Also I love that they found a way to use the rejected pilot and turn it into what’s really a compelling pair of episodes.)

24. ‘Balance of Terror’ is so good. It’s just a battle of wills between Kirk and the Romulan commander, with how difficult the pressure of command can be for Kirk, and that look into racism with the navigator who distrusts Spock.

25. McCoy and Spock having a battle of wills over Spock needing/not needing medical attention and raising their eyebrows at each other. Love. I understand the Spock/McCoy shipping. (Speaking of, in ‘Operation Annihilate’ when McCoy doesn’t want Kirk to tell Spock he said he was the best first officer in the fleet but Spock overhears and says thank you, McCoy’s face, lmao.)

26. When they find Kirk’s brother dead in ‘Operation Annihilate’ Spock actually attempts to offer comfort!!! Also Kirk holds Spock a couple of times in that ep, it’s great.

27. Every time Spock gets offended because they’ve accused him of having a human emotion or reaction. <3333

28. I think ‘City on the Edge of Forever’ works not just because it’s a truly compelling question of not holding one life, no matter how dear, over the lives of millions, but because Edith herself is genuinely lovely. You can see the tragedy in the death of a woman like her, and the soft romance between her and Kirk is beautiful.

29. And even in the midst of what’s easily one of the strongest (if not the strongest) of Kirk’s relationships on the show, you get Edith saying that she can see that where Spock belongs is by Kirk’s side. My heart.

30. The Gorn. Come on. Iconic.

31. As compassionate as Kirk is I also love the moments that remind you that part of the reason he’s such a good captain is that he’s ruthless when he needs to be. He will make the hard decisions firmly and surely and he won’t let his crew know if he’s internally struggling with them.

32. Kirk’s fighting style!! He’s just throwing himself at people and hitting them with his ass and clinging onto their backs and I LOVE IT.

33. In 'Court Martial’, I think Kirk’s lawyer ex might wear a female dress uniform for the only time ever on the show (certainly the only time in the first season). All the times when the dudes are wearing them, the women are all still wearing their regular duty uniforms. It’s sort of hilarious to me that the men’s look so fancy but hers is just a slightly different collar and a longer skirt, lol.

34. When Spock mindmelds with the Horta in ‘Devil in the Dark’! It’s so sad, and I think that’s the first time we really get a look into what it means for Spock to meld, to share so deeply with another being. 

35. I’m into how Kirk looks in that old-fashioned suit in ‘The Return of the Archons’ but definitely nothing beats him and Spock in short tunics and tights in ‘Errand of Mercy’. Plus Spock gets a half-cape!

36. ‘The Conscience of the King’, responsible for so much woobie Kirk backstory, even in AOS fic where it’s not even canon, lol.

37. McCoy strolling out with those women at the end of ‘Shore Leave’, all “well I am on shore leave”, lmao.

38. Of course McCoy’s iconic declarations of ‘I’m a doctor, not a ‘insert occupation here’. 

39. The computer programmed to seductively purr at Kirk is hilarious.

40. The origin of the redshirt. Classic.

My Fan Expo 2017 Experience

Such a crazy couple of days!! FAN EXPO WAS AMAZING!!

Thanks to my experience in HVFF Nashville, I felt more prepared than ever to take it on and take it on I did!

SATURDAY

I arrived Saturday morning and immediately got in line to get Tom Cavanagh’s autograph, I’ve been a fan since Ed so I was BEYOND EXCITED. I got even more excited when I realized Tom’s table was right next Stephen Amell’s table. Sad/not sad, Tom was an hour late and Stephen Amell was right on time. I had no choice but to stand and look at Stephen Amell for an hour – it was pretty tough to take. As I had gotten Stephen’s autograph in Nashville, I was skipping this time but I had hope to get a glimpse and what a prolonged glimpse I had!!

 The only slightly negative – was I talked to the people in line with me and once I said I was a HUGE Felicity Smoak fan – one of the guys proceeded to tell me for several minutes how awful she was using the examples of the break up, Helix and others. It was funny because when he finally stopped trashing her, I think he expected me to fight. I simply said you are welcome to your opinion, I like her enough for the both of us. Think I disappointed him – oh well.

  When Tom arrived, I was super nervous to meet him so I said the first thing that popped in my head – I’ve been a fan since Ed. And he joked – since 1942 then. I also told him I watch The Flash because of him. And he asked if I liked The Flash, I explained that I started out by watching Arrow and Felicity Smoak is my favourite character. And he jumped in trying to sell his show, she was just filming our show this week, she is amazing, truly one of those amazing people in the world – all these truly lovely things about Emily Bett Rickards – it was delightful!

I then met up with @almondblossomme and her family who had been getting Stephen Amell’s autograph, they moved onto David Ramsey’s line and I followed. They had an amazing family experience with David and I got to take photos – so got to be close to him again. David got everyone to sing Happy Birthday to @almondblossomme’s son! It was AMAZING! What a wonderful man!

After this we all went down to catch Tom Cavanagh’s panel. The man is truly a class act. Said lovely things about his co-workers and talked seriously about his work as an actor. Also interesting insight into his directing The Flash. He also spoke kindly of his time on Ed and Scrubs. I left feeling more enchanted with him than I was before and I was already a big fan. 

Spent the rest of Saturday wandering and checking things out. Great Day!

 SUNDAY

I got up extra early today to get in and rush to the Stephen Amell panel line up. It worked I was like 10 people back in line waiting to get in. I chatted with some cool people in line. I didn’t talk to her but the woman behind me was dressed up as Laurel Lance as the black canary and she, looked A LOT like Katie Cassidy – kind of freaked me out.

 I ended up 7 seats from the front, dead centre – Stephen Amell was RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!!!! SQUEE!!!

Stephen was awesome – I know there have already been posts about this so I won’t say much. But I really liked how kind he was to all the people asking questions. I’m also really glad after his story about the well-fed artist comment, that he was such a supportive wife now. I really do wish him all the happy. I’m happier knowing that people like him exist in my world. I also just saw his video about having such a wonderful time in Toronto – I’m so happy for him.

 The second panel I attended today was Bob Morley or Bellamy Blake from The 100. So glad I knew he was Australian before I walked in the room! He was gracious and lovely and answered all the questions well. He gave a good explanation for why Bellamy supported Pike against the Grounders in Season 3 that had slipped my mind. He said that Bellamy had risked his life entering Mount Weather to save the Grounders so they could help fight and get Sky Crew out…and the Grounders deserted them. So that was just another reason for Bellamy not to trust the Grounders….something to think about. He will have a beard in the new season. He watches iZombie. Best of all he’s just like me – supposed to wear glasses all the time, does not, goes around blind, as he does not want to wear contacts – I feel we may be kindred spirits.

After this panel, I had time to kill – lots of wandering around before getting in line for my final panel David Ramsey – and boy that was worth the wait! David Ramsey is amazing – I know we all know that – but it MUST be said again! He opened by confirming Diggle does not die, everyone cheered, when that stopped he said but if you liked Felicity… The room went silent. He was joking – have to say my heart was in my throat. As we are so cute (his audience) he struggles to lie. This is where it gets slightly spoilery so skip the italicized part if you don’t want any spoilers but these are mild:

 Apparently, as we have already heard Diggle will be having a rough year. He’s be dealing with a lot. Now that Oliver has become a fully-fledged hero, yoda Diggle is not really needed anymore, usually this is the point where they kill this character – David Ramsey has been promised that Diggle will not die. So since he is not dying, they had to change his characters. So his issues will lead to struggles with Oliver and Lyla. ARGUS will be big this year. He also mentioned he will be wearing the Green Arrow suit and Spartan will have a new suit, still military inspired. He also said he loves the idea of Felicity and Curtis being behind the computers in the lair while the rest of the team fights bad guys. He mentioned Smoak Enterprises as being where Felicity and Curtis work. Both Ramsey and Amell talked about each character having their own bad guy this year instead of one big bad – in fact Oliver and the Arrow would have separate bad guys.

 Non-spoilery, he told his version of the story Stephen had told the morning about the two of them meeting for the first time.  They both told of David Ramsey asking Stephen Amell during pilot season, are you good? Leaning in closer – are you good? He also answered that he became so buff after seeing Amell shirtless in Season 1 and being impressed – but knowing he was supposed to be this guy’s bodyguard he needed to step up his game. Also look for David’s own represent campaign coming soon about a cause that is super important to him.

Top Ten Worst Elfquest Outfits Part Two

Okay, let’s just get this over with, if I have to look at one more shirtless shirt I am going to vomit.

5. Cutter’s Vest

Cutter’s never really been the most aesthetically pleasing in terms of sartorial taste. He always gives you the impression that he grabbed whatever smelled best out of a pile of clothes in the corner of the tree. He’s here to be comfortable, not to look good. Winnowill broke this rule in volume three, that was her downfall.

In this case it looks like he snuck up behind Moonshade while she was sewing, grabbed a bison hide, cut some holes in it, and acted like he had no idea what she was talking about when she came looking for it.

4. Redlance’s Beard (and Turtleneck)

Redlance has been a fan fave since he showed up in the first issue, bloody, beaten, and vulnerable. He retained that popularity through to today, you almost never find him on a least favourite list. He’s been on the periphery of almost everything that’s ever happened in the entire history of the comic, by virtue of being Nightfall(Cutter’s BFF) lifemate, and he’s remained pretty much good, sweet, and terribly bland throughout. In the first couple of arcs, he had a decent vest and shirt combo, which was actually cute. Then, in the beginning of KOTBW, he had a cute, off the shoulder number.

Then, Wendy made the worst choice of her entire career in terms of character design. Apparently, once they reach about the equivalent of thirty in human terms(Wolfriders live about three thousand years. I don’t know what the fuck this is, except for more of her shitty grasp of science and biology), Wolfriders grow fucking fur out of their faces. Apparently they’ve never heard of a razor, either.

Most of the Wolfriders look like fine, not perfect, but fine. Strongbow has a goatee, Scouter has barely visible sideburns, and Redlance, well…

He looks like he should be asking Mabel to be his gnome queen.

Someone commented that Pike has a similar beard, but honestly? It kind of works for him. It takes that whole jolly, happy addict thing he has going on, and adds to it.

On top of, or underneath, the whole beard is this. This bizarre, applique mess that kind of… I mean, it’s a, well, what can you say about it? Like many of Wendy’s efforts, it’s got big blocks and dark patches, and basically looks like the seventies met Moonshade’s scrap basket.

I can’t say anything more about it. It’s yucky.

3. Skywise’s…Jewelry?

K, but, like, doesn’t he get cold? How does he wear that all winter without getting frostbite? Are those things on his arms really heavy? 

Why do people think he’s so hot, when he looks like a pre-beard Santa Clause?

2. These Shirts(and every iteration of them)

I really feel like I need to point out that this scene takes place not long after Chitter and Dart decide to move in with Ember and her group. I also feel the need to point out that Chitter’s comment to her mother on moving is that she is going to be the tribe’s tanner and make everyone nice and warm. 

Um…

Look, besides the general rudeness of that comment comment when you consider that Ember’s tribe HAS a tanner, and that Moonshade TAUGHT said tanner, I feel the need to point out that, unlike the two above pics, Tyleet managed to make shirts that covered more than a person’s arms. I don’t know about anyone else, but chest coverage is a big deal to me when I’m trying to stay cosy.

This is not the kind of shirt you make to keep someone warm. It’s the kind you make when you want someone to die of pneumonia. 

This is the trend that started with Rayek’s buckle outfit, and has continued to this horrific abomination.

Worth noting, this is the start of the couple that broke apart years of build up and backstory and left us all sort of cold and missing Kimo.

1.The Dress

This one.

Actually, I have to question, is she wearing a dress? Is this technically a negligee? Are there kids around?

It’s like one of those puffballs made of net that you put the shower gel on. I have no idea what’s going on here, and that’s not even my main problem with this dress. 

My main problem with this dress is what it symbolizes, back from its earliest appearance, in New Blood.

New Blood #4 is the story of Ahnshen, the Sun Village tailor, falling into an infatuation with Moonshade. The art(this example not withstanding) is very sweet, like a girl’s manga, and beautifully coloured, with what looks like watercolours. The storyline, about acceptance, love, cultural differences, and essentially, accepting all of someone and not controlling them. It includes a Strongbow who, rather than being jealous, or controlling, is offended on Moonshade’s behalf for what he sees as insults. Ahnshen himself is never insulting, or hurtful. Instead he comes across as young and naive. He thinks he can bring out Moonshade’s true self, with a lovely, princess like gown and cosmetics. Instead, he exposes his own self-deception, and grows. 

The dress doesn’t fit. Moonshade cannot make it fit. It is not who she is, and not what she wants.

This story is considered non-canon. That’s unfortunate, because it would have been great to see Moonshade ask Ahnshen to make it for her again, to explain that it would would fit now, both her figure, and who she is. It would symbolize her changing wants and needs.

Instead we got a few oblique exchanges here and there, and suddenly, Moonshade was living in the Palace.

Moonshade making the decision to change her life wouldn’t be entirely unexpected. Changing her life in a way that Strongbow wouldn’t be able to do would be a natural outgrowth of the early wild hunt issues, where Moonshade did begin to question the Way, and her own role in it.

But Final Quest didn’t really address this in a satisfying way. It tells us over and over again that Moonshade is happier, that she’s learning, gaining new knowledge and new skills, that she has new wants and needs. Yet, we don’t really see this. We don’t even see a montage. 

I’m not the kind to say you have show and not tell in writing. I think writing, by necessity, includes telling. But a character making a life changing decision, especially the kinds of decisions Moonshade made, we need to actually see some of it. We need to watch those experiences, understand what’s happening through her eyes with more than a few sad thoughts. 

Yeah. This is Moonshade’s penultimate goal, supposedly. A barbie doll with cut and paste hair. 

This art accomplishes only one thing. It gives an idea of how the dress is actually supposed to fit. It’s as if Moonshade sewed it in anticipation of attaining this form. 

Savah and Sun Toucher look kind of dead eyed and robotic behind her. It kind of fits the whole theme, an unwitting comment on how this pretty shape wears Moonshade’s flowers, her hair, and isn’t actually the same character at all. 

Where did this new Moonshade come from?
