Watching Don and Betty parent (together or separately) on Mad Men is so so sad (because I don’t think either of them ever wants to be mean to their kids! I think they both genuinely want to be better than their horrifying parents! The bar is just very very low!) but also kind of funny. It’s like if somebody gave some kids to the most neurotic of the popular junior girls at a private high school and a confident teenage drifter. How do they have a house??? They should be in a road movie about two college freshmen who couldn’t be more different but their boyfriend and girlfriend go to the same college so they carpool and hijinks ensue.

Sam Claflin + well developed female characters

I once posted a list of Sam's female-directed films [x], but as @jesstasticvoyage points out, it's also true that a lot of stuff he stars in features well developed female characters (I'm kinda tired of the "strong female character" phrase, so using this one instead). So, let's have a look at them.

The Hunger Games series (dir Francis Lawrence) - still the most obvious example for Sam as a role he's known for, and the purpose of this post. It's safe to say most people know Katniss Everdeen.

Their Finest (dir Lone Scherfig) - Gemma Arterton's character, Catrin, is an aspiring screenwriter hired to work on a script for a film about Dunkirk evacuation--this is a movie about a movie set during WW2. Sam is a fellow writer, in fact he is the one who discovered her. It's funny bc this takes place in 1940s and she gets the job of writing female characters, when even in our times we don't always have that. Worth noting is also Rachael Stirling's Phyl, a minor character but memorable and a lesbian--who doesn't die at the end. It's the straight relationship that gets treated like bury your gays trope this time!

The Nightingale (dir Jennifer Kent) - also known as the film in which Sam plays an absolute monster (you think Billy Dunne is bad, lol). The film centres on young convict Claire (Aisling Franciosi) seeking revenge for the indescribable harm done to her family. Basically, trigger warning for everything.

My Cousin Rachel (dir Roger Michell) - adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's novel. Sam plays Philip, the narrator, but Rachel is so intriguing, the whole story is named for her. She's played by her namesake, Rachel Weisz. There's also Louise (Holliday Granger), Philip's childhood friend. She's the relatable, girl next door type, but she is smart, in fact I think she is the one with the most braincells. (Also I have a theory about her, I think this version of Louise has a darker side!)

Enola Holmes (dir Harry Bradbeer) - title speaks for itself. Enola's mother is missing and the teenage heroine goes on a quest to find her and thus becomes a detective herself. Sam plays Mycroft, the eldest Holmes sibling, though he's far removed from the original Mycroft Holmes of Arthur Conan Doyle's books. Edith, who runs a teashop, is another notable female character.

Adrift (dir Baltasar Kormakur) - based on a true story of Tami Oldham, an amateur sailor, surviving 41 days adrift on the Pacific Ocean after a hurricane. Sam plays her bf Richard. Shailene Woodley has the role of Tami and is also the film's producer.

Riot Club (dir Lone Scherfig) - okay so what's this doing here, you ask, it's a film about an all-male elite club at Oxford. Yes but that's exactly the point, bc even though it is about an all male club, the female characters are surprisingly well developed. The play this is adapted from, Posh, was written by Laura Wade and the director is also a woman, so maybe it's not so surprising. We have Holliday Granger who plays the gf of one of the boys and Jessica Brown Findlay in the role of the pub landlord's daughter. Holliday's character certainly doesn't take any shit from the posh boys. Even Natalie Dormer in the role of a sex worker has enough self-respect to refuse their deranged requests, despite the amount of money it would earn her. Hence I include it on the list.

Charlie's Angels (dir Elizabeth Banks) - title speaking for itself, yet again. Sam's role is relatively minor.

Book of Love (dir Analeine Cal y Mayor) - a romcom. When Maria, played by Veronica Echegui, translates Henry's (Sam) unsuccessful book from English to Spanish, the book becomes a huge hit in Mexico. Turns out that while translating, she inserted some seriously hot steamy scenes. Sam travels to Mexico for promotion and the two of them now have to work together on the next book. So without Maria, the story would not exist and also, once Henry accepts the situation, he is happy to collaborate with her--and at the end, supports her in her own writing efforts. (If you can get round the premise, it is an enjoyable film.)

Daisy Jones and the Six - mini series based on a book of the same name. We have not one, not two, not three, but four amazing ladies to root for: Daisy, Camila, Karen and Simone. While Sam gives performance of a lifetime as the band's frontman Billy Dunne.

Other Notes:

Honourable mentions are Snow White (Kristen Stewart) in Snow White and the Huntsman, a film I have a definite soft spot for though there's many ways it could have been better. In The Corrupted Sam plays a convict who just got out of prison and reunites with his gf and son. The gf is played by Naomi Ackie. She's wary at first but does allow him back into her life and they get back together and raise their son. Unsure if another one of my faves, Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides apply. Sam's romance with the mermaid Syrena is my absolute favourite of his. She might seem helpless for majority of her screentime, bc she gets captured, turns human on dry land and is unable to walk as she's not used to having legs, Philip (Sam's character) has to carry her. But she was the one who saved him first. And POTC overall is not without good female characters.

Francis Aytown, Stoker and his salty grudge against those damn gay artists

(Remaking this post cause it didn't show up in the tags for shadowban reasons)

Hey, DDs, wanna know how our boi Bram saw a gay guy treat his crush without enough respect and went: “Welp, I’m gonna write about you going mad as you fall in love with him, how do you like that, huh, huh??” and then didn’t write shit?

Anyway, there’s a list of characters deleted from “Dracula” at different stages of writing and among them is Francis Aytown - the artist who goes mad trying to paint Drac. And scrolling through the artists of the time one of the first names that pops up is Frederic Leighton, the president of the Royal Academy. If you bought any of them modern books with classic art on the cover you most likely have seen the guy:

And I sat there like, welp, that sounds familiar, so I did some googling and of course our man Bram had beef with him.

So, at some party Leighton said a toast on how the highest form of Art was Painting and our man Henry Irving, the light of Stoker’s life, rose and said, the fuck man, what about acting. Leighton was like, ok, dude, that’s much art too, chill. The incident was documented by Stoker in his doorstopper “Personal reminiscences of Henry Irving” in a delightfully salty way (Bram, my man, if you put all that salt into getting laid, I’m pretty sure you’d be drowning in dick):

“At the banquet that night there was something of a faux pas, which was later much commented on. In the toast list was one: Science, Literature and Art. This was proposed by the Marquis of Dufferin and Ava, and was responded to for Science by Lord Kelvin; for Literature by the Bishop of Derry; and for Art by Sir Frederic Leighton. The latter was, of course, quite correct, for the President of the Royal Academy is naturally the official mouthpiece for the voice of Art in this country. The mistake was that, in speaking for Art, Sir Frederic limited himself to Painting. He spoke in reality for himself and Alma-Tadema, but ignored completely the sister Art of Acting, the chief exponent of which was a fellow recipient of the honour which he himself had received that day and who was present as a guest at the banquet. The comments of the press on the omission were marked, and the authorities of the University did not like the mistake. Leighton evidently heard of some comment on it, for a few days afterwards he wrote to Irving to explain that he did not think he was intended to reply, except for his own Art.”

And Leighton very much fucked dudes. There’re surviving letters from one of his bfs where the guy writes to him about plopping with bronchitis, missing him terribly, and being horny as fuck. You can go google them they’re very sweet. And Leighton was pals with a guy who was a boyfriend of another writer who wrote things about vampires - count Stenbock. And Stenbock had some beef with Wilde. So pretty much everyone in the queer community of London of that time knew each other, like everyone was everyone’s ex which, as a queer man living in a pretty small city, is kind of a mood.

Drabble request: Broadway star Arthur has has been cast as Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde in a production of Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical and his BF Francis comes to opening night. Don’t do all the songs, please, just Confrontation. The choreography is from a YouTube video on the channel The King's Academy, WPB. There’s a really cool effect in the video. There’s a transparent curtain between the actor and the audience and whenever Hyde sings, they turn a red light on him and cast a shadow on the curtain

Here it is! I’m really sorry if I butchered it — I know very little about theater/musicals tbh, and while I know the general plot of the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I’ve never actually read the novella (though I probably should lol). And describing in words what’s happening on the stage during a performance that relies heavily on choreography/visuals is difficult because it’s hard to capture the same atmosphere of the moment (I applaud screenwriters). But I tried! :D 

Opening Night

The beauty and thrill of performance — they are what get Arthur out of bed even on unpleasant mornings. He doesn't mind the dozens of hours spent during rehearsals. The costume changes, the hot spotlights on his skin, the sore — they're all minor inconveniences. The day he finally walks out onto the big stage, with hundreds of pairs of eyes all secured on him, everything comes full circle. He takes a deep breath and becomes the character he is playing in both body and mind.  

Being cast as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde on Broadway would have been nothing but a farfetched dream three years ago. But somehow, he found his way here, at the Plymouth Theatre. His boyfriend, Francis, is somewhere in the mezzanine, watching on. Arthur expected to feel nervous having him here, but the pressure has melted away. All he feels is performative adrenaline flooding his veins — a sensation that never grows old. This is his stage, and he is no longer Arthur Kirkland. 

“Lost in the darkness, silence surrounds you. Once there was morning. Now endless night,” he sings, clutching a dagger between his hands. "I will find the answer. I'll never desert you. I promise you this...Till the day that I..." 

The spotlights abruptly go out, and the music becomes sinister. A single red light against a transparent curtain illuminates Arthur's shadowy silhouette, and an audible jerk of surprise rises from the audience. In this scene, Jekyll struggles to keep the evil being inside of him, Hyde, at bay. 

"Do you really think that I would ever let you go? Do you think I'd ever set you free? If you do, I'm sad to say, it simply isn't so. You will never get away from me!" he says as Hyde. 

It is the scene Arthur relates to the most. What human doesn't have both good and evil inside of them? Isn't life a constant journey of discerning right from wrong, and sometimes, not knowing the difference? 

The red light momentarily goes out, and the bright spotlight returns to signify the change of character. "All that you are is a face in the mirror! I close my eyes and you'll disappear!" he continues as Jekyll again.

"I'm what you face. When you face in the mirror! Long as you live, I will still be here!" he sings when the red light returns and he becomes Hyde once more. 

We all wear masks and put on different personas around others, but does that mean they're not still a part of who we are? 

"Can't you see. You are me?" Hyde says later in the song, and Arthur channels his own anger and the mistakes he's made as he lets out each note. 

"Take all your evil deeds, and rot in hell!"

"I'll see you there, Jekyll!"

"Never!" 

The lights go out. End scene. ***************************************

"Did you enjoy the show?" Arthur asks Francis over dinner and a glass of pinot grigio. His head is still spinning. Opening night always has this effect on him.

"Enjoy it? I loved it! You were amazing!" Francis commends him, and his smile makes Arthur's heart soar. "Although, I must say, whenever you turned into Hyde, I felt uneasy. You play the role of the villain incredibly well. I hope you're not secretly harboring invisible demons inside of you and going around killing everyone in the middle of the night." Arthur chuckles and shrugs his shoulders. "I might. Sleep with one eye open."

Georgie can see the moment Robbie realizes what he said, what he implied. He can see Elliott wince out of the corner of his eye.

“Neither can Douglas,” Georgie says quickly.

All the monster boyfriends will be 25+ and varying degrees of Bara (muscular, big, etc)

Tommy is very particular about tea. Each customer will have a personally customized cup that is served in a cup they pick out from the dozens upon dozens Tommy has in his possession - this all helps him with readings

There will be an overreaching plot that’ll go throughout all the routes but there will be a couple routes where it isn’t as apparent 

So far, there are five monster bfs (all still under considerable amount of work): 

Wist (Blooming / Floral Tea), whose monster form will involve wood / bark / petals, very druid (glamour is bright colors, bright colors and more bright colors, accompanied with a bright smile and multi-colored hair, very fashionable), and he will be the happy-go-lucky one who just wants to make everyone happy (created from suggestions made by @arourallisreborn!)

Mint (Iced / Sweet Tea), whose monster form will involve ice / snow (glamour is undecided), and he’ll have a personality that’ll be a mix between a Southern Belle and Southern Gentleman   

Fea (Coffee), no monster form yet for this dude (glamour is undecided), but he’ll be kind of the black sheep, very passionate about coffee (thinks you should be drinking it black, no sugar, no cream, nothing, otherwise you’re insulting the flavor), and hates tea 

Tu (Unknown), again no monster form yet (in human form, tho: he’ll be tall, dark skinned, long white hair, always smoking a pipe), owner of the tea shoppe, kind of like the master of the shop, very imposing, stoic, serious and distant, but cares deeply for his workers (he’s going to be the True Route)

Lovelace (White Tea), glamour will be one of a smaller, cuter, younger bara but underneath that facade, this monster boyfriend will be a Cthulhu monstrosity, very serious, very serious boy who looks bored half the time
