Mary-Kate Olsen's Singular Style
She came to fame as a twin, but the actress's cultish look is entirely her own. Here, with Lauren Hutton, she pays homage to another fashion inspiration, Grey Gardens. Written by Laura Brown, with photography by Peter Lindbergh (Harper's Bazaar, 2007)

Mary-Kate Olsen may be the only young actress who breezes into her local Starbucks wearing towering, fashion-fierce Balenciaga boots, who arrives at her latest premiere (in Mary-Kate's case, for the new season of Showtime's Weeds, in which she plays a devout Christian with a pot fetish) sporting an oversize cross, and whose favorite band is Led Zeppelin. She may, in fact, be the only young actress who knows who Led Zeppelin is. MK, as she is known to her friends and family, is also a punctual and professional sort. She arrives for a poolside tea in Los Angeles 10 minutes early, ordering a hot chocolate while explaining her fetish for all things sweet — "I'm a candy girl, like Tootsie Rolls and Swedish Fish" — and objecting when the waiter tries to take the sugar bowl away. She is wearing a nautical striped T-shirt (her mom's, from the '70s), tucked into two black Wolford slips rolled down and turned into a tight, Robert-Palmer-video-style mini, and multicolored sparkly Christian Louboutin stilettos. She's just had her hair colored, returning to a sunnier shade after some experiments with both peroxide ("I woke up one morning and was like, I want white-trash hair today") and the dark side (an auburn-haired near-Goth moment last year). She's carrying a large black fringed leather Prada tote — she doesn't do small bags — and her fingers are covered with rings, most notably two vintage coiled gold snakes stacked on top of each other. ("They remind me of twins, sort of double headed.") Altogether, the effect is less her famed "bag-lady chic" than an edgy, body-conscious, and, yes, sexy silhouette. If she weren't 21, she could be 40. And French.
Few people need reminding that Mary-Kate — with her twin sister, Ashley — literally crawled into celebrity aged nine months (courtesy of Full House) and has not been out of the spotlight ever since. She has been a celebrity for more than two decades. Perhaps that's one reason she seems as if she came out of the womb worldly, the textbook old soul. "Yeah," she says with a small shrug. "I get that a lot." With all of that attention and all of the money (her and Ashley's company, Dualstar, has famously become a "billion-dollar business"), Mary-Kate could easily have ended up the type who wears pink terry cloth and carries a variety of small dogs. "Could you imagine?" she says with the politest version of a snort. "No way." She credits her exceptionally close-knit family (she has five siblings) and, interestingly, early stardom with helping her keep her perspective. "I think it helped that I started in front of the camera, so it didn't come as a shock. If I was a teenager and was thrown into the spotlight, I don't know how I would react, to be honest." Though the tabloids are all too keen to brand her a skinny, nervous deer in the headlights, in person Mary-Kate is easy in her skin, confident and surprisingly tactile, curling up in her seat and touching you on the arm to make a point. She laments the generic style of most actresses and cites only men as style inspirations: "Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp. Men, they just dress the way they want, and they don't think about Who Wore It Best." She doesn't much care for Who Wore It Best, noting she avoids those pages by "wearing vintage so often. I just dress the way I feel instead of looking for what's the new handbag." If Mary-Kate and Ashley have their way, more people will be wearing clothes and carrying bags the way they do. They have just shown the fifth collection of their ready-to-wear line, the Row, and recently launched a contemporary label, Elizabeth and James, named after a sister and a brother. The Row's holiday collection (in stores next month) is a slick mix of skinny leather pants, razor-cut blazers, butter-soft, slouchy tees, and a destined-to-be-cultish pullover fur. Lauren Hutton, who stars in the Row's Spring '08 look book, says, "The clothes are extraordinary. A man I was with just loved them. The pieces are just so genius, soft like a baby's skin. Simple minimalist stuff, but really spectacular." Mary-Kate, designer, faces an interesting challenge. She has to marry Dualstar — which has made its fortune selling tween-tastic DVDs and pastel Mary-Kate and Ashley T-shirts at Wal-Mart — with her increasingly edgy and subversive taste. Dualstar executives, some of whom have worked with her since she was a child, often nag her, mom-style, about pulling her hair back "or wearing a color," she says with a laugh. "I had this event recently, and I was like, They're going to be so happy that I'm wearing ... purple. I actually have to think about those things, though, you know, so I don't get trashed." Get trashed sometimes she does. Hutton says, "Once in a while, she'll wear something and I'll think, Oh, baby doll, take another look. But to have the bravery, to take the chance to do that, is pretty wonderful. She is making her own way, which is hardly ever done in Hollywood." Of Mary-Kate's penchant for gigantic Balenciaga heels, Jenji Kohan, the creator of Weeds, says, laughing, "I'd be like, 'It's Tuesday. Do you really want to be wearing those shoes?' But she pulls it off." Designer Giambattista Valli, a friend, says, "She likes to take risks, but because she has such strong personal style, she always manages to make it work. Even if she had nothing on, she'd have style." And MK chic is spreading. "Sometimes I'll look at people or at a magazine and I'll do a double take because I'm like, Oh, my God, that's my outfit, but that's not me," Mary-Kate says. Playing with her wire-rimmed aviators, she jokes wryly that she should have bought shares in Ray-Ban. (She and Chloë Sevigny pretty much brought back white '80s Wayfarers.) She tends to fall in love with a look, then wear it until she's done. "If I put together a good outfit, I'll wear it for three days and then switch it up with a blazer," she says. "I still love my vintage jeans, my tights, and my pants, though." She didn't start wearing heels, in fact, until a couple of years ago: "I kept watching Ashley walk around in them so gracefully, and I'm such a klutz. But I ended up loving heels, and I don't usually take them off." She wears precisely one pair of flat shoes: Chanel's knee-high patent-leather gladiator sandals. This season, it's Balenciaga's fall collection — all of it — that has Mary-Kate obsessed. She is close to designer Nicolas Ghesquière and says, "He is so talented, but he's the nicest, most down-to-earth guy, and that makes everything he does more brilliant. I bought everything, but I haven't got anything yet," she says like a girl impatiently waiting for Christmas. Will she wear the new pieces with her infamous clodhopper boots? "Uh-huh. Wore them the other day, actually." Mary-Kate always goes with her gut, even if some people (back to those tabloids) don't quite get it. "The tabloids say things about me? What do they say?" she asks archly. "People are going to write what they want, and everyone's going to have their own idea of who I am. But I'm not trying to be friends with the people who are reading them, really." After a rough couple of years filled with near-forensic scrutiny of her weight, she'll have you know that she does eat. "This is not going to sound good," she laughs, "but I like making crispy tofu sticks with peanut sauce. I love my sashimi and my salmon and my vegetables." She observes, "Stress plays a big role in how I look day-to-day. I've always been very active — Pilates, yoga. I grew up horseback riding every day for hours. I love dancing. I usually last longer than anyone on the dance floor." A common image of Mary-Kate has her emerging from a coffee joint with an oversize cup. "I always get creamed for having my Starbucks cup," she says, sighing. "But the only time people get photos of me is when I'm getting coffee, when I can't sneak away from the camera." She also resents the pictorial implication that she and Ashley are dilettantes. "They take photos of us going into our offices, and it's 'Mary-Kate and Ashley shopping again.' But I'm going to work for eight hours, and we're working so hard. ..." She trails off. "It just shows how people want to think of you." Mary-Kate is not above celeb watching herself, however. Newly obsessed with Victoria Beckham, she notes she avidly watched Beckham's Coming to America documentary: "She's running around in a bikini and heels, and I'm like, Oh, my God! I do that, too!" How positively Grey Gardens. "I run around my house naked with heels all the time. It's so funny. All my friends will tell you I love running around in kimonos and jewelry or naked with jewelry." More people will be watching Mary-Kate soon, thanks to her role in the Emmy-nominated Weeds. "I am a very good Christian girl," she says with a wink. "She has her moral beliefs — and she happens to smoke pot." Of her newest cast member, Kohan adds, "Mary-Kate is complicated. She's a big celebrity, a huge media icon, but you have to separate the media images from someone who has the same issues, the same desires, as anyone else." Of course, Mary-Kate's image, in all its incarnations — from high fashion to small screen — is her strongest asset. And she has yet to settle on one. "I feel like I've lived 10 different lives already and I'm only 21," she says, almost as a reminder to herself. "But I also feel like I'm entering a new chapter." One thing on which she is clear, though: She doesn't need to be looked at all the time. What would she do for a day if she were invisible? "I would probably go to a restaurant with my friends, who would be able to see me, of course," she adds pragmatically, "and I would sit outside and enjoy a nice lunch with them. Then I would walk down the street." The old soul takes a sip of her little-girl-sweet hot chocolate. "That's what I would do."

A Mother’s Love by Nes22
George’s mother find out he’s gay and it doesn’t go well for him: he’s kicked out, loses contact with his friends. Watch as the internet and his friends freak out over his online disappearance and Dream struggles with the realization of his feelings for his best friend.
Act III by overthejune
He leaned down and smiled sensually. "Your name would be nice."
The brunette seemed to consider this for a moment, then leaned forward until their faces were inches apart; a direct challenge. Clay could feel the boy's breath softly ghosting onto his face.
"George Davidson."
Clay's smile grew as he tallied himself a point. "Well, my name is Clay Dream. It's very nice to meet you, George."
George stared straight into his eyes, a light going off in them that signaled his intense disapproval of Clay's condescending tone. The boy leaned back in his seat but didn't relax. After a single moment, the dark eyes discarded him.
"Wish I could say the same."
-- Everyone loves Clay...everyone, that is, except for the sarcastic, edgy guy in the third row of Clay's English Language class.
Clay has always enjoyed a challenge, but he never thought that it would be so hard to get someone to notice him.
George has always enjoyed staying away from people like Clay, but he never thought that it would be so hard to ignore him. It will be quite a battle of the wills (or pills), and it will change their lives forever.
After School Special by AoifeAnAdam
Montague versus Capulet, Taylor versus Katy, Dream versus George.
It was one of those fueds, the kind you barely even had to acknowledge. The sky is blue, we breathe air, Dream hated George.
Needless to say, neither of them were over the moon when they found out they had to spend two months working together in weekend detention.
All is Fair in Love and Football by graciegirl2001
The first time George Vincent meets Dream, he is passed out on the grass outside Sapnap’s house in nothing but his boxers, the beer can in his hand leaking into the dirt.
Charming.
In which George is the captain of the cheer team, Dream is an up and coming football star, and George spends a great deal of time avoiding said up and coming football star like the plague.
Call It Wishful Thinking by darlingsdream
George liked to think that he was the realistic type. He never believed in clichés or falling at first sight, they were all things that just happened in fiction anyway, right?
After receiving letters of endearment from an anonymous sender for four years, and he is determined to find out who it is before his senior year is over. At this point, he's willing to do whatever he must to find his Dream.
Curiosity Killed The Cat by alliewrites
It was common knowledge: humans were born seeing only black, white and shades of grey and when a person meets their soulmate their world bursts into bright and vibrant colours. It seemed pretty simple, but it was much, much more complicated.
Everything George had learnt about soulmates had been against his will, and mostly from Karl.
George had always been a glass-half-empty type of person, and unlike his friend, finding his soulmate definitely wasn't at the top of his to-do list. Currently, his biggest priority was getting a stupid tabby cat to stay off of his balcony, and due to the fact that the cat happened to be the most stuck up and stubborn creature on the entire planet, it wasn't an easy job.
In hindsight, it may have been a bit foolish to think he could solve the problem by sending a note to the owner attached to the cat's collar. On the other hand, it wasn't nearly as ridiculous as accidentally forming a relationship with the owner though sending notes back and forth via cat.
But George doesn't realize just how crazy his life is getting until he realizes he can see the green colour of the cat's collar, and, suddenly the stupid little cat is the least of his problems.
Falling For You by fluentharmoney
In a newly repetitive dream, George falls for a breathtaking stranger— literally. Every morning afterward, it feels like less of a dream and more of a memory messing with George's mind.
George and the Dreamcatchers by Ship_On_The_Sea
George, fresh out of college and attempting to fit into an office job, gets thrown into the lives of the members of an aspiring band, and finds just what he needs in the world to keep him on his toes. (on hold/discontinued but still worth a read)
lucky charm by persona_kath, sleepytime_cal
George has had bad luck before.He’s stubbed his toes on doors, dropped heavy pounds onto his feet, nearly cut open his fingers trying to cut potatoes-- but nothing like this. Nothing in his life can compare to the misfortune of having just been crowned king.
---
In which George, down on his luck, is crowned king and meets Dream, the luckiest knight in the world.
Number Neighborhood by Depressed_Anon
Dream- i’ll literally bark at you
George- fucking e x c u s e me?!
Dream- you heard me
Sapnap- BARKBARKBARKBARK
Karl- BARKBARK GROWL WOOF WOOF WOOF
(OR)
Sapnap decides to hop on a trend that happened in like, 2018, and makes a group chat of number neighbours. Chaos ensues. (hysterically funny and i’m recommending it so hard)
Saltwater Secrets by earlgay-milktea
George may be a mermaid, but his feelings for Dream are drowning him.
teachers pet by niyuha
Clay’s students were always so concerned with his personal life. It wasn’t like he minded, he hardly kept up the professional persona he portrayed to their parents around them. He allowed them to read him like they read his reading assignments. He loved his students, truly.Until they start inquiring about his odd behavior towards the British computer science teacher in room 297.
That would be enough by darkseid_of_the_moon
When his childhood best friend, George, moved away, Clay was devasted. As the years passed, he often wondered what happened to the indomitable sunshine boy who left without so much as a goodbye. Eventually though, he moved on and the memories faded.
Ten years later, Dream meets GeorgeNotFound online. There's something achingly familiar about him; that voice, that laugh, that unmistakable smile. It's not possible and, yet, here he is; the one that got away. There's just one problem: George has no idea who he is.
 --
“Um, hi.”
With just those two words, Clay felt like he’d been punched full force in the chest. Catapulted back through his memories, he choked back a pained curse as a litany of impossibly intense images and emotions threatened to overwhelm his senses. It had been almost a decade; he’d thought himself far stronger than this, and yet here he was helplessly drowning.
“I’m George, and I’m excited to be working with you all.”
The Stone Prince by CynthiaLost
It all started with a myth – an old-wives’ tale circling through a small town called ‘Raymore’.
“There’s a statue.”, the townsfolk would say. “Deep into the woods by the lake.”
~~~or~~~
Dream is a Prince, cursed to remain a statue until 'true love' supposedly frees him.
George is the village chief's son, tormented by his mother into doing heaps and heaps of chores, solely as punishment for having a dream that was just too selfish.
The dream?- simply wanting an adventure, outside the little town, he calls his home.
Would George find that adventure, when he sneaks out of town one day, falling into a clearing where a mysterious statue resides?
Well...
'Tis the story of the Stone Prince,Will you stay for the telling of it?
Got any more dark link headcanons sfw and nsfw. I'm always a slut for that boy and not many people write for him :(. So thanks for writing for my fav emo elf lol
Bro who isnt low key a slut for DL
Dark Link
SFW
His hair is a wildcard each morning.
Sometimes it's white, sometimes grey, or maybe a mixture between the shades.
He's woken up with a white base color with black fringe and he never heard the end of it.
His best buddies are Lost Silver, BEN, Red,  (They share a stuck-in-a-video-game bonding background), along with LJ.
He's a total flirt and may have gotten a punch in the nose from Jane once or twice.
Or three times.
Still thinks she's hot, though.
He tolerates Jeff, he'll say hi to him if they're passing by or have a short convo on the forest's edge.
But Jeff is a bit too edgy for his taste.
The phrase "Goth elf aesthetic" describes his fashion choice.
Speaking of fashion, he wears his tunic too much.
But he will resort to jeans when someone finally pries it off of him to wash.
He also has the most beautiful crimson eyes.
He's amazing at sword fighting, not that this skill will ever come in handy.
Uness a home intruder challenges him to duel for his prized belongings.
Which contain one (1) OoT beta cartridge, a tunic, and a half a bottle of Tylenol.
Unlike BEN, Dark doesn't have much skills in hacking or games in general.
bUT LiSTEN
He has the BEST jawline.
That's it. That's his redeeming quality.
He also has a rockin' body.
All of the sword fighting and training he does gives him also of upper body strength.
Scratch that, just strength in general.
He's not ripped, but he has some toned muscles.
Abs? Yes.
MUcSLes? Yes.
NSFW
He's worse than a guy who just discovered porn for the first time.
Easily has the testosterone levels of a porn star.
He'd fuck you all day, if you'd let him.
He's had so many lovers in the past, being the flirt he is.
So he's very experienced.
And if he sees so much as an ankle he'll take that as a flirty signal.
He'll enjoy eating you out and pin your squirming hips.
He likes to manhandle you too.
He'll yank you towards the edge of the bed and then rip off your jeans.
Or pick you up and sit you on his lap to attack your neck in kisses.
Always finding new ways to show off his strength.
He's got a lot of stamina, and self-control for that matter.
So he's gonna last for a while in bed.
He's not too vocal, but he will give the best dirty talk and gowling you've ever heard in your life.
And he loves hilting when he cums.
And make sure none of it leaks out.
Coughs, he has a breeding kink, coughs.
Even though he hates kids.
He'd also be into cock warming now that you mention it.
He tries to give good after care, but he's worn out, not to mention lazy.
So he'll toss the blanket over you a give you his water from the nightstand.
And a lil kiss on the cheek.
H E A D C A N O N S
Christian Fields was born as the oldest to a younger sister, LUCY FIELDS, in Massachusetts to a fairly wealthy family. The family didn’t want for much, they had the means to obtain what they needed and were comfortable in their lifestyle thanks to their parents jobs (a lawyer and a real estate agent).
Christian was thirteen when their mother fell pregnant again, and having spent far too much time bickering with Lucy growing up, he wasn’t thrilled to learn about the new member of the family at first. It was only as time went on, he became more comfortable with the ideea, growing into the big older brother he knew that he could be. The family became closer than they had been.
When his mother went into labour, Christian had enough of an understanding to know that whatever was going on, wasn’t exactly good. If things were normal, there wouldn’t have been a mad rush to the hospital, there wouldn’t have been as much panic as there had been. All he could do was try and keep calm, try and keep Lucy calm, and wait for any news that might come.
Good news didn’t come at all though, with APH and fetal hypoxia resulting in the loss of not only their baby sister (Hazel, as she was henceforth known), and their mother.
Things got harder from there on out, with their father withdrawing from them completely when he wasn’t completely berating them for the choices that they were making in their lives. Christian put his head down in school, not only to keep on his father’s good side but to be that role model for his sister that his father was no longer stepping up to being.
Christian went on to attend Princeton University, flitting between medicine and law as his father had tried to talk him into a number of times. Despite that however, he had always felt more drawn to medicine, and went on to study at University of Maryland.
It was while studying at the University of Maryland that Christian met BROOKE WALKER, who was also studying medicine. To say that he fell for her charm would be an understatement, and the two continued their romance throughout their time at med school. It was only when it came to being matched to different hospitals, Brooke’s being Seattle and Christian’s being New York, that ultimately pulled the two apart and their relationship ended.
Christian had a natural flare for plastics almost as soon as he started his residency, and it became a no-brainer for him. He worked hard, he proved himself, and he secured not only a fellowship at Tulane - which is where he met Angelica.
Angelica was a neuro fellow at Tulane for the same period that Christian was, and they clicked from the moment that they met. Everyone could see it a mile off, as if it might have been written in the stars, meant to be. They were careful though, knowing that the promise of getting attendings positions in the same place were slim to none.
But it came through, and the pair headed back to the same hospital where Christian had done his residency in New York to kickstart their careers as attendings. It was picture perfect, a fairytale to say the least.
Christian struck up a good working relationship with LUCAS WILLIAMS, with Christian taking a special interest in the reconstruction surgeries of Lucas’s patients, it only became natural that their strong working relationship grew into a friendship that extended beyond the confines of the hospital walls.
When Angelica fell pregnant in 2018, Christian was excited. It hadn’t been their plans as such, but nonetheless he was more than excited to take on the challenge to be a father. He shared the news quickly with his sister, there was nobody else he wanted to know before her.
October of 2018 Angelica and Christian welcomed a baby girl, Annabelle Hazel Fields, who became the centre of his universe very quickly. It was perfect, they had the jobs, they had the house, they had the little girl. Their lives were coming together, almost complete.
That was, up until the winter of 2020. Shortly after Annabelle’s second birthday, Angelica was involved in a car accident on her way to the hospital. It had been late at night, an urgent page for one of her patients that had her leaving their home and moving with haste to the hospital, only for a drunk driver to run a red light, and ultimately take Angelica’s life.
Christian was broken, but had to hold himself together for Annabelle. He knew they he wouldn’t be able to get through it alone - opting to call on the support network of his sister and uproot their lives to Seattle.
https://izetarion.tumblr.com/post/189410998186/theres-two-versions-of-adam-taurus?is_liked_post=1
Monty!Adam: Created by Monty Oum, a minority. Focused on the Faunus, while wanting to get back at the humans for their mistreatment of his kind, a man of revolution who was focused on the safety of his people - seen as how he was strong-armed into working with Cinder Fall after getting her maiden powers, wasn’t so psychopathic that he would turn on his own kind and kill humans out of sheer glee (seen with Cinder and her lot, as he gave them a chance to leave), prioritizes the cause over a cat girl, who was his student - sharing a “student-mentor” relationship as established by the show’s creator as well as said cat girl (“Forget it! It’s time I headed back to Mistral!”), has a legitimate reason to hate humans - especially those affiliated with the Schnee Dust Company, very charismatic, somewhat of a fallen mentor figure given the way the catgirl described him, his cause steadily consuming him (“I had someone I care for, who changed…”), is one of the most popular male characters in the series in the first half of RWBY - despite having little screentime, has an aesthetically-pleasing look to him, compared to DMC!Vergil and Jetstream Sam - two of the most iconic video game characters, in terms of looks and fighting style, Adam Taurus fans signs his adoption papers so that Miles and Kerry would never touch him. People use this version in their fanfics and RPs, turning him into a redeemable person while still keeping his morally grey aspects. Tauradonna is more mutual than lovey-dovey.
Okay so let’s break this down and show this is bullshit.
“Focused on the Fanaus-”
He is never shown to actually help any Fanaus and all White Fang activity, ESPECIALLY in Volumes 1 and 2, revolves around fucking over human. In fact, considering Tuskon, the fact that Vale does not have discrimination against Fanaus and V1 E1 openly says a peaceful protest of Fanaus was interrupted by the WF (” In other news, this Saturday's Faunus Civil Rights protest turned dark when members of the White Fang disrupted the ceremony. The once peaceful organization has now disrupted...”): Adam has acted AGAINST the Fanaus since LITERALLY the first episode.
“A man of revolution who was focused on the safety of his people-”
Which is why, in an EARLIER episode than the one you cite (Volume 2 Episode 12 meaning MONTY was in charge here as we know since he was cited with putting in the Raven scene in the SAME EPISODE against Miles and Kerry’s wishes): Adam gave no shits about his men DYING when he openly said he’d convince them to work with Cinder without so much as a glare at her. BTW, Adam specifically cited Cinder being HUMAN for the reason why he didn’t want to kill his men (’I won’t sacrifice my men for a human cause’). If the human part wasn’t the reason why he wasn’t agreeing with Cinder, why would his dialogue not be ‘I won’t sacrifice my men, no matter what.”?
“ wasn’t so psychopathic that he would turn on his own kind and kill humans out of sheer glee (seen with Cinder and her lot, as he gave them a chance to leave)-”
Nuh uh, in the same Volume Adam out right STABS Blake and says he wants to destroy everything she loves, in the previous Volume he didn’t care about his men dying and said nothing about trying to DESTROY VALE killing THOUSANDS if not MILLIONS of people (including FANAUS) and at the VERY beginning, he tried to blow up a train car full of people who hadn’t even raised a finger against him even though, as Blake shows, he could have detached the train.
“ prioritizes the cause over a cat girl, who was his student - sharing a “student-mentor” relationship as established by the show’s creator as well as said cat girl (“Forget it! It’s time I headed back to Mistral!”),”
Except that, again. Adam STABS Blake and outright shows malice towards her in the SAME VOLUME, Arkos shows mentorship and romance are NOT exclusive and even THAT line is delivered with Adam looking furious clearly showing he’s hung up about Blake.
“ has a legitimate reason to hate humans - especially those affiliated with the Schnee Dust Company-”
Not really, especially since Adam was shown to be selfish in previous Volumes so why would he care about other people? In fact, the ‘fuckboi’ Adam you’ll bitch about later has the reason to hate humans, especially those with the SDC. This version, since he’s apparently completely seperate, is just racist.
“very charismatic”
Never shown OR said. Just projecting.
“ somewhat of a fallen mentor figure given the way the catgirl described him,”
Notice how here they don’t actually say WHAT the description is despite KNOWING about quotes? That’s because there’s nothing actually said in the show that is ambiguously about a mentorship.
“ his cause steadily consuming him (“I had someone I care for, who changed…”)”
Doesn’t prove anything AND it coinsides with ‘fuckboi’ Adam.
“ is one of the most popular male characters in the series in the first half of RWBY - despite having little screentime,”
So is Kirito, wanna guess what V1-2 Adam and Kirito have in common? They don’t have defined personality and their popularity came from people projecting onto them.
“ has an aesthetically-pleasing look to him, compared to DMC!Vergil and Jetstream Sam - two of the most iconic video game characters, in terms of looks and fighting style”
Both of which are incredibly common in anime.
“ Adam Taurus fans signs his adoption papers so that Miles and Kerry would never touch him”
Too bad according to you, they weren’t the ones who ruined Adam. No no, your issues, as I have shown, existed with MONTY. So you better start smack talking him... what’s that, if you did that you couldn’t profit off his name and his fanboys would rip you to shreds? Maybe you shouldn’t be a disingenuous fuck.
‘ People use this version in their fanfics and RPs,’
And people turn Jaune into a generic self insert and Ruby into an edgy angsty psuedo anti hero- that means nothing.
“ turning him into a redeemable person while still keeping his morally grey aspects.”
So basically making him a generic anti villian instead of a tragic case of someone not being able to get over their past tramua.
“ Tauradonna is more mutual than lovey-dovey.”
And it’s more ‘abusive’ than mutual.
Fuckboi!Adam: Created by Miles and Kerry, two amateurish white guys noted for writing sub-par comedy segments and part of the upper echelons of Rooster Teeth. Born out of the criticism of “show, don’t tell aspect” of the show - barely having any visible evidence of Faunus racism, born out of the two admitting they couldn’t write a racism sub-plot - despite having the money and resources to do so, established as an abuser by CRWBY and demonized heavily by them and the fanbase despite little evidence of such prior to because of catgirl’s various descriptions of him pointing towards someone “dear” (“More of a mentor, actually…”),  “hElLo, My LoVe!” “tHe bElLaDoNnAs HaVe CaUsEd Me NoThInG bUt GrIeF!”, “sO i JuSt wAsN’t GoOd EnOuGh FoR yOu.”, A fedora wearing crazed nazi ex-boyfriend, DMC-Reboot!Vergil but with the edgelord turned to 11, “Tauradonna? More like Tauradon’t!”, How many zippers does your dumbass outfit need? lol, Why did your voice crack?, Even his own VA hate him, Is an incel-ass bitch, Gaston apparently, Lol he’s attempting the birdbox challenge, That stupid ass face reveal did nothing as the damage was done, The fandom - primarily BMBLB, and CRWBY sing of his death (“Ding-dong the bitch is dead!”) - with the BMBLB fandom using his death as major evidence of their ship becoming canon. Also, his death caused such dissonance in the fandom that shit hit the fan in all kinds of ways, not to mention his death started the slow deterioration of RT - embodying the spite element that Blake attributed him, probably because he was pissed at CRWBY to the point where his hatred manifested as a curse - causing their various injustices against their employees to come out and be heavily criticized as a result (No, seriously, RT is visibly crumbling shortly after his demise).
“ Created by Miles and Kerry-”
And yet will somehow completely overlap with the Volumes Monty had the most control over.
“ two amateurish white guys”
Miles is part Mexician.
“ noted for writing sub-par comedy segments”
While Monty is noted for never writing whatsoever so i guess that means you think Miles and Kerry are better.
“ Born out of the criticism of “show, don’t tell aspect” of the show - barely having any visible evidence of Faunus racism, born out of the two admitting they couldn’t write a racism sub-plot - despite having the money and resources to do so,”
The criticism being located SOLELY in Volumes 1 and 2 Aka MONTY.
“ established as an abuser by CRWBY and demonized heavily by them and the fanbase despite little evidence of such prior to because of catgirl’s various descriptions of him pointing towards someone “dear” (“More of a mentor, actually…”)’“
You know...despite the fact that every single aspect of Adam’s character has been shown WITH MONTY, as I showed above.
“ “hElLo, My LoVe!” “
Located in Volume 3, which you cite as a Volume where ‘Monty!’ Adam existed.
“ “tHe bElLaDoNnAs HaVe CaUsEd Me NoThInG bUt GrIeF!” “
Huh, if you spelled “Belladonna” as “Miles and Kerry”, that sounds an awful lot like you...oh
“ “sO i JuSt wAsN’t GoOd EnOuGh FoR yOu.” “
They scream as Rooster Teeth ignores them.
“ A fedora wearing crazed nazi ex-boyfriend”
Never actually shown wearing a fedora or ever showing any personbality traits associated with it...but then again, you know what they say about mirrors...
Also at least it’s better than ‘blank edgy emo teen’ he was in Volume 3 which you loved apparently.
“ DMC-Reboot!Vergil but with the edgelord turned to 11″
Uh oh, Op’s brain rotted so he can’t actually make arguments....oh wait, he was always like that.
“ “Tauradonna? More like Tauradon’t!” “
So basically ‘wah wah wah. my otp is not canon’.
“ How many zippers does your dumbass outfit need?”
Dunno, why is wearing a tux as a freedom fighter and sticks out like a sore thumb?
“ Why did your voice crack?”
Why did he sound fourteen in Volume 3?
“ Even his own VA hate him,”
Ever since Volume 3 which you cite as “Monty!Adam”
“ Is an incel-ass bitch, Gaston apparently”
Or you know, a Beats who never grew up and never became a better person. But who needs insight?
“ Lol he’s attempting the birdbox challenge”
*insert Family Guy skit here*
“ hat stupid ass face reveal did nothing as the damage was done”
They say as most of the fandom did a 180 on how they view his character and gave him more justification for his actions than “Monty” Adam ever had.
“ he fandom - primarily BMBLB, and CRWBY sing of his death (“Ding-dong the bitch is dead!”)”
Which considering he was meant to be hated is a GOOD thing.
“ with the BMBLB fandom using his death as major evidence of their ship becoming canon”
Basically ‘wah wah wah make MY otp canon”
“ Also, his death caused such dissonance in the fandom that shit hit the fan in all kinds of ways”
all kinds being two ways: accepting it and throwing a fit because you didn’t get your way. Also inadvertently justifying wasps being assholes because they did the same thing during Volumes 4 and 5.
“ t to mention his death started the slow deterioration of RT - embodying the spite element that Blake attributed him, probably because he was pissed at CRWBY to the point where his hatred manifested as a curse - causing their various injustices against their employees to come out and be heavily criticized as a result (No, seriously, RT is visibly crumbling shortly after his demise).”
And said curse infected many of his fans where they all became monsters after his death like say, using the suffering of others AND THE DEAD *cough* MONTY *cough* all over a fictional character that didn’t even exist because as I have shown Adam is completely consistent with his characterization from the Black Trailer to his death. Something I am certain OP knows deep down because half way through this point they completely abandon any attempt at actually proving what they are saying to instead spout a bunch of memes in a vain attempt to appeal to people’s confirmation bias because they can’t actually make an argument to prove Adam had changed AT ALL, especially since their obsessive behavior, attempt at creating an abusive/parasitic relationship with RT and their own childishness has all but prove Adam is in no way unrealistic as they act like him except with NO justification whatsoever.
But sure, scream loud enough and people will think you’re right. That hasn’t BACKFIRED before.
Brief explanation and update on my blog
I decided that I have too many random thoughts, and collectively everything that goes on in my head is a fucking circus, so naturally I came to turn my blog into my shitposting hellhole where you all have to suffer with what I post. So, for starters, the most important update is that I’m going to be talking more about my DID here. A lot of my close friends and loved ones know about it, and I’ve really come to terms with how it is and how I am with it. That and my Alters are cool so it’s not that big of a problem. I don’t like calling them “Personalities” because they’re a bit more complex than that and you’ll see that over time, it also just sounds dumb. Who am I? My name is Jack, I have DID, I like guns, anime, books, card games, random mobile games about waifus, vidya games (400+ steam games, lmfao) and petting people’s pets while I run deliveries. I deliver pizza. It’s a great job. My DID is annoying but the alters I have are cool so I guess it makes up for it.
How does my head work? Well my alters occupy my imagination, and as a result, I can enter what I call my “Mindscape” a place where I can associate with them and talk to them, as well as interact on a weird physical level that’s a lot like a lucid dream. It’s really confusing, and I was scared as hell for the first year of it but after a while I got use to it. We’ve got a big house, and nice forest, and a lake somewhere in that forest. It’s nice. I’ll probably end up describing the house and then posting a map I’ll draw in paint later.
Who are my alters? Well, I’ll tell ya.
Jason: A British-American, but a patriot all around. Jason has a love of firearms, the good ol USA, BBQ’d ribs and a cute girl named Diana. Outwardly he seems like a responsible, keen, and very kind man. Once you get to know him you discover that he’s a hybrid of a conservative and a hippy. The man likes his weed, his booze, and his guns, but that doesn’t make him any less of a helpful friend who’s talked me through a lot of shit. Jason has short, parted brunet hair that Diana keeps well trimmed, a strong, square face, and sharp grey-blue eyes. The man could stare through your soul, and usually wears military style clothing, he’s use to it and it’s comfy to him. Absolutely head over heels for Diana.
Diana:  A plucky, cute and thoughtful girl, Diana is basically the mom-friend of the group. She takes care of everyone, loves everyone, and tries her best. She likes books, anime and gardening. She’s also a bit of a pyromaniac, earning the title “Fire Demon” from Stevey, from the numerous times she’s set him ablaze for pissing her off. Which he deserved. Diana is a helpful girl, she’s talked me though a lot, and has helped many others. If you ask anyone, they’ll say she’s a pure, kind soul who loves to offer advice and has helped them in some way or another. Diana has brunette shoulder length hair, soft blue eyes that make your heart melt, a cute button nose and blue glasses. She’s typically in some color of blue because its her favourite, and she likes to wear comfy clothes that are still fashionable. If there’s one thing she loves above all else, it’s Jason. The two are inseparable.
Stevey: The only man to ever piss Diana off that she used violence against him. Stevey is... well... Stupid, absolutely fucking retarded really. Despite this, he’s incredibly smart and agile, he does dumb shit “for the lolz” and has gotten himself in trouble with me more times than I can count. He likes pranks, and sometimes takes them too far. He never learns through words, which is why I beat him like a redheaded step child. But despite this, he’s hilarious, absolutely horrible, and I love him. A short, blonde haired man with blue eyes full of mischief and a dark sense of wonder. The man only wears white shirts, blue jeans and black sneakers, anything else is some sort of elaborate prank.
Rick: A Russian genius in the scientific fields, mostly biology and chemistry. At first, he may seem like a cold, calculating genius who has all but lost his compassion, but the truth is that he’s forgetful and has resting bitchface. Rick is a teddy bear of a man, who likes hugs, hot cocoa, good books, cooking, tea and snacks. His favourite thing to do is collaborate with Asher on some grand elaborate idea that would likely not work in the real world, but is still challenging and fun to build, he likes to test his knowledge and skills. Rick has light orange hair, green eyes and big square head. Sarah lovingly calls him “The Big Russian Blockhead.” he likes wearing slacks, tight shirts, and loafers.
Jiro: A Japanese fellow who’s trained in martial arts, and the art of the shinobi. At first he seems cold, distant and rude. But he’s just got social anxiety, Jiro is a nice guy, friendly and always open to talk about anything and nothing at the same time. He likes to spar, throw knives, and practice his skills. Outside of that he’s a big fan of baseball, old books and card games, as well as D&D. He’s a massive nerd. Jiro has trimmed black hair, and grey eyes. He likes wearing black like an edgy emo kid. He spends a lot of time with Stevey, sometimes sparring, other times just playing around with a baseball or lazing around in the sun. Asher: TEXAS INCARNATE. Asher loves the old west, the pioneering spirit, and engineering. His mind was engineered to be an engineer, everything from mechanical to electrical, it fascinates him and he’s taken it upon himself to do everything in his power to learn it and work with it. Outside of that he’s a big fan of playing poker, drinking with friends, and hockey. Asher spends a lot of time in his workshop, but when he’s out and about he loves to talk and get along with people, he also likes to tell stories and embellish them a little bit. He and Rick go together like popcorn and cheese, its a weird combination when you first think about it, but once you see it in action you realize how horrifying the potential is. He has short blond hair that’s usually tucked under a cowboy hat or ball-cap. He’s got shiny blue eyes and likes to wear welding masks. He also likes to wear jeans, button up shirts, and cowboy boots. He’s handy, dandy, and all around a great person to hang out with.
Sarah: Sarah is a laid back, tomboy kind of girl. Sarah can be a bit hotheaded, but otherwise she’s chill. Sarah likes sports, mostly playing them, she also likes to play with explosives, and she’s good at it too. She’s also come to enjoy some vidya, mostly FPS games. She likes to sing loudly in the car, in the shower, or wherever there’s music playing, she likes to drive around, and she loves dogs. Sarah has a firm and respect and love for me, the first time we met, we drew guns on eachother and neither one of us let up until Diana came in the room and said “Oh hey look it’s my sister.” At which point Sarah came to discover, and continued to delight in the fact that I treated her like everyone else. Quote “You don’t treat me like a girl. You treat me like you’d treat Rick, or Jason, and I really respect that.” Sarah has blond hair that she usually ties up in a ponytail and blue eyes that are full of determination and fire. She likes to wear athletic clothes, mostly jogging shorts and tank tops, she doesn’t really care what she looks like but that’s because the only person who’s opinion matter’s to her, says she looks great anyway.
Anyway that’s all for my alters, if you have any questions or want to get to know us better, feel free to ask questions, we’ll be running the blog sort of like an “Ask Me” blog except we’ll also be shitposting at random because that’s just how we do it.
Othercide Review — The Suffering Other Has Won
July 27, 2020 6:00 PM EST
The presentation and atmosphere on offer are fantastic, but Othercide’s gameplay sadly cannot match. So much potential that’s regrettably not well utilised.
It only took one trailer to sell me on Othercide and cement my desire to review it. A tactical RPG where you fight eldritch horrors, with a gorgeously stylised black/white/red visual style that evokes Sin City? Anyone familiar with my work can probably tell that I gravitate towards these games, so I was keen to sign up. Regrettably, my positive initial impressions didn’t last for long before disappointment at the awkwardly balanced systems and wasted potential set in. There’s an incredibly solid core to the game, but it was quickly apparent that many of its aspirations weren’t going to land.
youtube
“If there’s any one thing that stands out about Othercide, it’s the visuals.”
I have to say from the very outset that Othercide’s presentation is fantastic. The art style and colour scheme are gorgeous to behold, with the black and white only punctuated by red highlights. Each of your characters has a long flowing scarf that starts completely red but becomes increasingly greyed out as their health bar depletes, for example. If there’s any one thing that stands out about Othercide, it’s the visuals.
This is further compounded by the designs of the eldritch abominations you’re fighting. The enemy design in Othercide is full of twisted, fleshy and misshapen creatures that wouldn’t look out of place in Bloodborne or any Lovecraftian tale. Couple all that with strong voice work and music that works well to establish the gritty, sombre setting? It’s really an impressive package. Your mileage may vary as to whether it ends up creeping from stylised to “edgy”, though. The story certainly compounds that potential of going too far, with tales of twisted surgeons and corrupt priests. Nonetheless, it is unsettling and well presented throughout.
Othercide starts off with a brief tutorial mission where you play as the Mother, introducing a few of the gameplay mechanics you’ll be using in battles. Once this tutorial ends, you’re established in the core of the game. Each Recollection — a run of the game — is set out like a calendar, and each passing day adds a selection of battles to choose. Your units can only partake in one battle per day, so you’re encouraged to keep at least two full squads going before long. These missions also have limits on characters taken, starting with 1-3 but building up after the first boss to allow more.
Tumblr media
Every four days, the boss of this particular sequence will be made available to fight. Come the seventh day, the boss fight becomes mandatory if you haven’t already challenged it. These are the biggest, toughest, and most dynamic encounters in the game. Beating the boss moves you to the next week/era, but losing instantly ends the Recollection. Starting a new Recollection lets you select from unlocked perks and bonuses going forward, with better bonuses and more currency to spend based on your previous performances. Rinse and repeat, getting stronger each time until you make it to the end.
“The enemy design in Othercide is full of twisted, fleshy and misshapen creatures that wouldn’t look out of place in Bloodborne or any Lovecraftian tale.”
The major gameplay loop of Othercide is split between battles and team management. The daily missions will primarily be Hunts (kill all enemies), but there are occasional variants. I’ve seen Survival (wait until an exit zone spawns, then get your units to it), Rescue (escort a helpless unit to an exit zone), and Ritual (delay and kill one enemy before it completes a ritual that instantly kills your squad). I found these alternate types to be very sparsely occurring though. For the most part, you’ll be deployed with the intent to clear the map.
With all that preamble, let’s talk about how the battles work. You’ll select your units and then be taken to the stage. There, a timeline will display at the bottom of your screen, with units moving up or down it based on their actions. When they hit 0, they act. As such, you’ll want your units at the front of the timeline and need to stall or focus fire enemies down before they can act. Managing the turn order is the crux of any battle, and minimising the enemy’s actions while maximising yours is the aim.
Tumblr media
When your units get a turn, they can spend Action Points to move and use any combination abilities. You’ll have 100 by default and can get more as they level, with instant actions typically requiring 25-30. However, if you end your turn with at least 50 AP remaining, that unit will act again much sooner than if fully depleted. What this means is that you’re incentivised to play conservatively, saving your burst windows for when you can avoid being punished for it. It’s a good system at heart.
You’ll frequently find enemies that will set up Delayed Actions, which usually hit hard or affect targeted areas. Avoiding these or delaying the enemies becomes the aim of the game. Your units can also utilise Delayed Actions, but you’ll have access to extremely few of them, which is a shame. More common are Reactions and Interrupts; these are abilities that have a health cost to use, but will do powerful damage and effects when their trigger conditions are met. Interrupts also have the benefit of canceling enemy attacks and performing a counterattack.
As an example: my gun-wielding Soulslinger has 100 AP. Her Shoot ability costs 25, so I can use any combination of one to four attacks. I might stay in place and use two shots, preserving 50 for a faster turn. Or, I could move 17 points of tiles and shoot three times, dishing out more damage when I can avoid the reprisal, and then moving back a single tile to break line of sight. If I cannot avoid a counterattack, I can still burn a HP cost reaction to interrupt the first attack on me. There are lots of theoretical options.
Tumblr media
With a wide variety of hideous creatures arrayed against me, each with unique patterns and abilities, the possibilities for Othercide’s combat seem pretty varied and intricate. Unfortunately, my disappointment blossomed when I found how little reward there is to actually do anything except play safe and utilise basic moves. This all hinges on that single flaw: HP costs for many abilities. See, characters will permanently die if reduced to 0 HP (unless a rare resource is spent to revive them), and healing options are almost non-existent. To properly explain why, we need to talk about the unit management.
Your units are all Daughters, borne of the Mother from the tutorial. You spend a resource called vitae to create them, assigning them one of three classes: Shieldbearers (tanks), Blademasters (damage dealers), and Soulslingers (ranged damage/support). Each class has a unique set of abilities, and you get to choose one of two when the Daughter reaches a level milestone (2, 5, 10 and 15). There’s some variety in starting stats and ability configurations, but each class is generally going to have the same core abilities.
Daughters can be powered up in four different ways. The first and most obvious is leveling. Experience is given by completing missions and daughters level up from this with increased stats and potentially new abilities. You can spend vitae to equip Memories to their individual abilities, which add various modifiers. Memories drop from enemy kills, and can do things like increase damage, critical chance, or add effects like armour reduction or turn delay. Lastly, daughters have the chance to gain traits after combat, granting them permanent bonuses (though some also come with negatives; reducing XP gain for higher crit damage, for example).
Tumblr media
Of these three methods, the gains from leveling up are the most significant. Even with identical traits, abilities and memories equipped, a level 7 Blademaster will outstrip a level 5 one by a good margin without fail. The only way to gain experience is through doing missions, with more gained the harder the difficulty of the battle. You can supplement it through other ways, but if the daughter doesn’t fight, they don’t become very strong.
“Should you want to do as I did and make a “Flesh Voltron“, that’s a possibility.”
But there is a fourth way to power up a character: Sacrifice. It’s possible to kill one of your characters off in order to grant a powerful trait to the recipient, as well as fully healing them. You can also stack these traits if you like; though you’ll only ever see one listed, the stats do go up. If you can spare the units and the vitae to produce more, this can definitely add to their power. Should you want to do as I did and make a “Flesh Voltron“, that’s a possibility.
This is, unfortunately, where the entire system begins to unravel. Sacrifice has the caveat of requiring a daughter be the same level or higher as the recipient in order to be used. Beyond sacrifice, you cannot heal your characters any other way. It’s possible to revive a dead daughter, but the resource to do so is very rarely acquired outside of new Recollections. If your highest level character is on low health? You either leave them on the bench, risk them in battle, or feed them into a lower level character to hopefully make them stronger. To make it worthwhile, that lower level character probably also wants to have an injury that needs healing, which means they’re likely still being benched until such an occasion.
Tumblr media
But this ends up slowing your progression even further. Remember how I said that higher levels are the biggest crux of your power? Well, even a character with a sacrificed trait is still going to have to grind up. Sadly, Othercide’s XP gains make it just that: a grind. When you can’t have a character fight more than once a day, you only get a handful of chances to net them experience.
That wouldn’t be an issue in itself if the battles were fun, and up to a point, they are. Astute readers may remember, however: all your reactions and interrupts have a HP cost to use, which is a percentage of the unit’s max. And this is why it all started to come apart before too long.
Enemy damage can be pretty high, so you’re encouraged to avoid taking it. Unless you’re going to take more damage than it would cost to use a reaction to negate it, there’s very little point to actually doing this. All the intricate combos you can perform hinge on these conditional triggers, so instead of doing anything interesting? I just found myself playing safe and utilising basic AP consuming attacks. And this got immensely dull and grindy very quickly.
Othercide’s systems have so much potential in them, but they fall so short because of these few design oversights. It’d be really fun to set up intricate combos and manipulate the timeline, but the reward is not worth the risk and cost. Instead, the best way to get ahead is just to play safe, delay opponents, and use your most basic abilities. Playing things interestingly just doesn’t do enough extra damage or effects to warrant the effort. Nothing kills the desire to experiment with interesting combos when just “move and attack twice” is easier and more effective by a good margin.
Tumblr media
The only caveat to this is during the boss fights. In fairness, the boss fights in Othercide are pretty awesome. Bosses are well designed and fit a specific theme of the enemy types, and they’ll chime in during your runs with sinister warnings and threats. Mechanically, they’ve got large health pools and different phases of combat, with different abilities and tactics required for them. Their ability set is such that sacrificing your HP in exchange for extra damage and mitigation just might be necessary to get through.
What’s less awesome is having to fight the bosses (or even general enemies) again on subsequent Recollections. Enemy stats don’t scale, so after overcoming the boss for the first time, they’ll probably be a cakewalk on subsequent playthroughs. It’s possible to spend points to skip these earlier Eras and get back to where you were before, but that’s also less opportunity for gaining XP. This is mitigated somewhat by later Eras just having more XP from missions in general, but I still couldn’t help but feel like I wanted to spend my unlocks elsewhere. It was just one more little annoyance in an increasing pile.
I really struggled to continue to play Othercide. Eventually I was going through the motions for so long that I just couldn’t bear to carry on. It’s entirely possible that later abilities or unlocks could mitigate the situation, but if there’s no sign of reprieve for multiple hours of grinding at a time, players are unlikely to struggle onward. This is where I found myself, and while some may press on and find more satisfaction from the core gameplay, I couldn’t do it. I can’t stress how disappointing this was to me, because I seriously wanted to love it from the outset. There is so much potential in the systems here, but they’re either not well utilised or balanced in such a way to disincentivise more creative play styles.
Tumblr media
Games like Darkest Dungeon or Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark mitigate this with a variety of character classes or potential builds, but there aren’t nearly enough to do that in Othercide. Likewise, the long-term research and base management of something like XCOM does a lot to help a campaign’s variety. There’s just not enough of that here — even with at least one new class to access later — and doing interesting things just sabotages my run and forces additional grind on top of an already high baseline.
The only real standout feature here is the presentation, as mentioned earlier. There are times when the creepy, stylised nature crosses into overly edgy territory though; particularly when a daughter will activate a HP cost ability by slashing their wrist for the rare spurt of red colour. Othercide’s narrative isn’t a primary focus either, though it does have fascinating lore and worldbuilding. It’s just not enough to carry it forward, and too often devolves into being proper noun soup until enough intentionally vague information is uncovered to figure out what’s happening. There’s definitely stuff to pick apart and digest, but it really wasn’t enough to encourage me to push on when the gameplay simply didn’t land.
Tumblr media
“It seriously hurts that I didn’t like Othercide.”
As a quick note, the technical state of the game on PC is fairly solid. I experienced almost no technical hiccups that weren’t already accounted for and should be absent from the release build. I will say that the game was likely designed with a controller in mind; playing with a mouse and keyboard as I was, I’d frequently have little moments were movement or controls would be “sticky” and unresponsive and would need a couple of clicks to get it right. Not a big deal for a turn-based game, but it happened enough to give pause, and tends to be common in games designed around a controller.
It seriously hurts that I didn’t like Othercide. I can see the potential in it, and I really can’t overstate how impressive I found the presentation and style of it all. I wanted to like it and recommend it so badly, I really did. The core gameplay idea is solid, and it’s still quite possible to find enjoyment here. There are just too many little issues however that snowball into an avalanche of gameplay problems that I couldn’t reconcile.
The end result is that Othercide just failed to land for me. It’s entirely possible that the developers are able to adjust numbers and patterns a little to make something more enjoyable, but until that time? I struggle to see myself recommending it to most people. Give it a shot if you’re a devout fan of the genre or really revel in the graphical style, just don’t expect anything too significant.
Tondy: I liked her designs a lot, but I wish they weren’t all the same dark grey and black! She seems to really excel in draping, but I do want to see more color. Score: 3.5
Bolo: Very clean, professional-but-fashionable looks with a masculine edge. Lots of dark fabrics, though, but draping skills are a nice bonus. Score: 3.5
Ayana Ife
Tumblr media
Age: 27, Home: Salt Lake City, Utah
Tondy: My favorite design was the long flowy pants with the spaghetti straps in the back.  I also liked the versatility of the boyfriend shirt. Score: 3.5
Bolo: Ayana had some really cute looks and I absolutely loved her color palette. I even love the colors she’s wearing in this picture, even if whichever one of the judges that was (Mondo?) didn’t like the color of her hijab. I love it! Score: 4.5
Margarita Alvarez
Tumblr media
Age: 30, Home: San Juan, Puerto Rico Tondy: I adored the purple and pink skirt that she showed first. I didn’t think that anything she showed was in the least matronly! (One of judges thought it might be) Score: 3.75
Bolo: Margarita had some gorgeous Dior-inspired looks, and I didn’t think they were matronly at all. At one point she was wearing this cute short-sleeved tunic dress with a plantain print, and it was adorable! Score: 4.25
Samantha Rei
Tumblr media
Age: 36, Home: Minneapolis, Minnesota Tondy: I like what she said about not having to apologize for the size you are! There was a black dress in one of her photos with a little black top hat that may be the cutest dress I have ever seen!  I also thought the purple print dress she was wearing was adorable!! I think she will do well. Score: 3.75
Bolo: Samantha’s looks are vibrant and fun, some looks on the lolita spectrum and others that had that had an anime quality to them. Some a bit costumey but still very lovely. Excited to see her challenge work. Score: 4.25
Deyonte Weather
Tumblr media
Age: 36, Home: Chicago, Illinois
Tondy: I loved the dress on the model and the first print dress was beautiful  I would buy whatever that was that he was pinning pleats on on the mannequin because it is going to turn out gorgeous! Score: 3.5
Bolo: I really liked the architectural quality to some of his looks. Since he’s a fan of architecture, it’ll be interesting to see how that influences his looks. The cityscape dress was nice and different from others I’ve seen. Score: 3.5
Age: 37, Home: Atlanta, Georgia
Tondy: She is too cute for words. I think she will keep things lively and fun on the show! I love peplums, and she had a pic of an adorable black dress that I think could be a best-seller! Score: 3.75
Bolo: I wish I could remember what she said, but it was something about designing for a working class girl or something along those lines. I liked that idea of cute, fashionable clothes for an everyday girl. Score: 4.0
Shawn Buitendorp
Tumblr media
Age: 27, Home: Grand Ledge, Michigan Tondy: Shawn makes amazing leather jackets. I can see rock stars wearing these. The lion one and the one that looked like mosaics were particularly awesome! Score: 3.5
Claire Buitendorp
Age: 27, Home: Grand Ledge, Michigan
Tondy: Claire’s designs are not quite as edgy as Shawn’s. I like her first little black dress a lot, and I liked her aesthetic of making classic silhouettes embellished into a statement piece. Score: 3.5
Bolo: She had a black lolita dress that I thought was really nice, and she had some mosaic work and nice jackets as well. She also seems to like incorporating words into her looks, which I’m on the fence about. Score: 3.5
Aaron Myers
 Age 23. Home: Ridgewood, New York
Tondy: Hmm... I’m not sure how I feel about these clothes if they are for men. That said, I thought some of them were really cute and would look good on women too. I worry a little bit that he is trying too hard to be different! Score: 3.0
Bolo: This guy had some unique ideas. In my notes are the actual words “wank pocket” and “penis but not...” I think he said something about gender neutral, but I really got more of a “dresses for guys” vibe out of him. Could be very interesting or not so much. Score: 3.0
Brandon Kee
Tondy: I love his fabrics and that jacket with the laces was amazing! I’m with the judges as I want to see more of his designs as well. I hope we get to see him make the fabric! Score: 3.5
Bolo: Brandon’s looks were a lot of oversize/baggy menswear in neutral colors. Some of the textiles he showed looked nice. Score: 3.25
Michael Brambila
Age: 25, Home: Oakland, California
Tondy: His clothes are different, but I liked the orange blouse. I would have liked to see more of the iridescent jacket that was hanging on the rack. It’s going to be exciting to see what he comes up with. Score: 3.25
Bolo: Michael was into what he called “fetish undertones,” which were things that tie up, rings, straps, etc. He likes to play with gender identity and looks with feminine undertones. Strikes me as more art than fashion. Score: 3.25
Kudzanai Karidza
Age: 32, Home: Atlanta, Georgia
Tondy: I liked him and I liked his dog, but sadly his designs did not impress me. I see where he is coming from, but I just didn’t get it. Score: 3.0
Bolo: Kudzanai uses a lot of color, texture, and African-inspired style. Some of his looks had a shabby chic/post-apocalyptic look to them, and others were more tribal avant-garde. Score: 3.75
Vincent “ChaCha” Yu
Tumblr media
Age: 24, Home: Taipei, Taiwan
Tondy: Well, these designs were just a little too childish or costumey for me, and I am surprised that he got through, honestly.  He is as cute as a button, but maybe he would be better off doing children’s wear? Score: 3.0
Bolo: TBH, I didn’t think this guy was for real, so I was shocked as hell that he’s an actual contestant. I am using not a drop of hyperbole when I say all of his designs looked like unconventional challenge looks. Unusual fabric choices; strange mixes of colors, textures, and prints; odd embellishments--I’ve never seen anything like it. That good be good or really really bad. Score: 3.25
It was a typical day in Underfell.  Nothing was blooming, the air full of the sweet, sickly smell of rot, trash strewn everywhere, and screams and battle cries of monsters could be heard for miles.  The birds who bravely flew the troubled skies, took careful care to avoid the two skeleton monsters who were walking through the darkened forest.
“UNDYNE HAS PROMISED ME A REMATCH FOR THE TITLE OF CAPTAIN IF I CATCH A HUMAN.  THEREFORE, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE MUST MAKE SURE THAT MY TRAPS ARE FULLY FUNCTIONAL AND SET IN CASE ONE COMES BY.  I WON’T LOSE MY SHOT BECAUSE A FLESH BAG THINKS THEY CAN WEASEL ON BY ME WITHOUT DIRE CONSEQUENCES.” The tall, dark Papyrus told his brother.
“i don’t think that can help your case, bro.” the much shorter Sans replied nonchalantly, sticking his hands in his pockets as he quietly waited.  As usual, his brother fell for the bait.
“WHY?  DO YOU THINK I NEED MORE TRAPS?  OR PERHAPS I NEED THEM TO BE MORE DEADLY?” Papyrus asked, his scarred brow now rising in worry. He was truly desperate for that title of Captain.  It was what he had been determined to become all his life, even as a baby bones.
Sans chuckled.  “no because a weasel isn’t a human.  it’s an animal.  you wouldn’t be able to use that to get a rematch with undyne.”
Papyrus reacted immediately.  His pale skull flushed with bright red magic, his eye lights shrinking in on themselves.  “SANS!  YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I DESPISE YOUR STUPID PUNS! CAN YOU SAVE THEM FOR GRILLBY’S WHERE THE REST OF THE DRUNKEN PATRONS FIND THEM MILDLY AMUSING?” he spat, trying to ignore the twitching of his jaw.
He wasn’t as lucky, unfortunately for him, as Sans noticed it.
“come on boss… you liked it!  i see ya smiling!”  Sans began to laugh.  He loved it when Boss enjoyed his jokes but still played tough to crack.
“I AM AND I HATE IT!” exclaimed the edgy skeleton, his jagged teeth flashing in the artificial sunlight.  Sans stared at him.  With his lean and tall figure, his blood red eyes and sharp teeth, Papyrus was definitely the coolest. He was surprised when clawed red gloves grasped his jaw and pulled him closer to him.  Papyrus’ eyes were narrowed.  “YOU HAVE A SMART MOUTH, SANS,” he told him, “BUT I CAN THINK OF OTHER WAYS THAT YOU COULD BE USING IT…”
Sans gulped, stunned at the sudden change in his demeanor.  It was still a surprise when Papyrus switched from brother mode to lover.  “b-b-boss… i…” he stuttered, his broad tongue already forming in his mouth.  Papyrus stared down at him, his skull holding his signature knowing smirk and half lidded eyes, a finger leisurely stroking Sans’ cheek.  But Sans wasn’t looking at Papyrus right now.  Instead, he was looking behind him.
“boss… didn’t you have traps set up in this area?” he asked quietly, trying to remember.
Papyrus turned around, now also puzzled.  “I HAD A ROPE SNARE… IN THAT TREE… JUST IN CASE SOMEONE MANAGED TO GET BY MY SPIKE PITFALLS…” he whispered.
Shallow footsteps, previously unseen, had cut through the fresh snow.  Almost in front if the two skeleton monsters, right where the snare was, it looked like someone had fallen and been forced to the ground.  Looking at each other first, Sans and Papyrus looked up into the tree at the same time.
The lowest branch was where the snare had been attached.  Instead of seeing just the dreaded rope trap though, there was a grey and black haired being, clothed in a dark hoodie and deep red pants, a red bandana around their neck, with Papyrus’ rope wrapped around their boots.  Several bandages were wrapped around their arms, giving them a slightly mummified look.  Sans wondered if, under their pants, that their legs were the same too – not that it made a difference in the long run.  Calm, black eyes stared back at skeletons.
 No one said anything at first.  Papyrus was transfixed at the sight of the human… the human stared silently back at them, while Sans was trying to withhold his surprise.  This wasn’t Frisk or Chara… had the timeline cycle finally broken?  Were they finally free?
But… that aura… it was different… deadly… toxic… it sent shivers down Sans’ backbone.  This human was even worse news than the kid.
Of course, Papyrus was the first to break the silence.  “HUMAN!” he shouted, causing even the most courageous of birds to fly away from the area in fear.  “HUMAN!  YOU HAVE BEEN CAPTURED BY THE GREAT AND TERRIBLE PAPYRUS!  THE STRONGEST MONSTER OF THE UNDERGROUND!  NO ONE, OTHER THAN UNDYNE AND ASGORE, HAS EVER SURVIVED A DUEL WITH ME!  BUT, YOU’RE IN LUCK TODAY, HUMAN!  TODAY, I AM FEELING NICE, AND AM IN A GOOD MOOD.  DEPENDING ON YOUR NEXT MOVE I MAY YET PROVE MERCIFUL AND GRANT YOU A QUICK AND PAINLESS DEATH.”
The human blinked and sighed.  “Listen, I was supposed to meet up with a buddy so…”  A gleaming knife appeared in their hands and, quick as a blink, they had sliced through the rope, falling from the tree.  The person turned midair, falling into a superhero crouch.  Even Papyrus was stunned into silence.  The grey and black hair wasn’t the only thing unusual about this human.  They had a single dark, calculating and cool eye, one that seemed to watch the both of them intently, as if they weren’t even shaken by the sight of two walking skeletons, both with jagged and sharp teeth.  A mask, appearing to be of cow or goat, covered the other eye, and its eyes too stared back at the skeletons – the tiniest sliver of red watching the skeletons.
“I’m already late.” The human said, turning on their ankles and beginning to walk away.  Papyrus and Sans were in shock.  Not a single monster, let alone a human, had ever talked or treated them with such disrespect before.  Even Asgore made sure that he made time to listen to them when they held audience. “HALT!” screeched Edge.  The human stopped and stared at them with that lone blank, uninterested eye.  Sans could see Papyrus seething.  He, like Sans, didn’t like this reaction.  It was unnatural.
Papyrus, for once, was unnerved.
“I AM THE GREAT AND TERRIBLE PAPYRUS!” he said again.  “AND I CLAIM YOU AS MY CAPTIVE.  YOU SHALL BE TAKEN TO THE CAPITAL, WHERE YOUR SOUL WILL BE HARVESTED FROM YOUR BODY.  BUT, AS YOU HAVE TRIED MY PATIENCE, I WILL NOT BE AS GENTLE ON YOU.  YOU MUST LEARN RESPECT IN THE LITTLE TIME THAT YOU HAVE LEFT IN YOUR MISERABLE LIFE… WHERE ARE YOU GOING?” he demanded.  The human had started to walk off again in the middle of his speech!  How rude!  How dare they?
The human sighed again, turning again to face them.  “Listen, I’m already late.  I don’t want to be held up any more than I already have by a couple of hot air balloons.”
Sans would have laughed at the look of Papyrus’ face if he was in a different situation.  Papyrus was flushed deep red in colour, and was a complete sputtering mess.  His eye sockets were blank and empty….
A bad sign.  Papyrus was no longer unnerved but instead was angry, very angry… he always did stupid things when he was angry.
“SANS…” he whispered, dangerously.
Sans shrugged, he knew this was coming.  “welp.  nice talking to you kid.” he said, his ruby eye flaring to life as he performed a check. He saw:
Nikki Half-Demon. HP: 220/220 Level: 18 (it was here that Sans had to pause.  This… human, its LOVE was almost as high as Asgore?) SHE changed her into the monster she was forced to become.
“WELL?” asked Papyrus, once Sans finished his check.
He looked over at his brother, his lover.  “we’re in for a bad time if we continue down this path, boss.  are you sure you want to continue?”
Papyrus snorted at Sans’ warning, looking back at the human.  “I CAN’T LET ONE LITTLE, BRAT TARNISH MY REPUTATION.” He snarled.  In an easy, well-practiced movement he summoned his glowing bone sword, and bolted forward, swinging a long slash at the creature.
Just as it looked as if it was over for the human, the bone sword just about to cleave her in two, the human jumped back, landing well clear of Papyrus’ attack. “There’s one thing you should know about me…” their voice had changed to stone-cold, their eye… how could Sans describe the changes to their eye?  The white of their eye was no longer white, but instead as dark and black as the winter night, and their irises had changed to a deep, blood red.  “I HATE BEING CALLED LITTLE!” she screamed.  It was with a burst of wind and energy, swirling around her, that sent Papyrus flying backwards against Sans.  Sans, managing to catch his beloved brother before he crashed against a tree or worse, attempted to keep his sockets open to watch the creature, but was forced to close it against the raging windstorm.  When at last it had quieted, Sans opened his eyes again, his own magical iris activated, staring at Nikki. Oh boy.
If he had thought that the eyes and the voice was bad… well… Papyrus and him were in for a real shit storm now.  A long graceful tail, appearing to be like the ones he had heard that lion’s had, the tip being covered in the same grey as their hair, wrapped around her figure.  Wings, appearing to be more like demon hands, one blue and one red, had sprouted from their back, gnashing their summoned teeth and growling at the monsters.
“Who’s ready to play with me?” she mockingly asked, the tail wrapping around her tighter and higher.  A long, thin and deadly red spike appeared at the end of the tip, completing the strange and deadly look.
Papyrus, for the first time in a long time, was uncertain.  Well, Sans smirked, maybe he’ll be more careful.
“ready paps?” he asked, his eye shining brighter as he shoved his hands in his pockets, grinning a savage grin, the light glinting off his gold tooth.  This could be fun.  Would be exciting to have a new, unusual challenge for once.
Papyrus looked over at him.  Seeing Sans’ battle stance, he too smiled. “READY WHEN YOU ARE, BROTHER.”  Several glowing red bones appeared behind him, with regular white ones, just for good measure.
Nikki let out a cool sounding chuckle.  “If fools are in such a hurry to die, I’ll grant your wish.” With a loud roar she leapt to the trees and at the two brothers, a knife in each hand.  She was truly ready for battle.
Sans teleported away, landing in a high branch to watch for an opening.  With his 1 HP it made him a target.  Besides he was more of a long distance fighter.  His bones, gravity attacks and Gaster Blasters were effective at a distance, where he could weave his complicated web of death… making the human dance their way foolishly into his grasp… and the final blow.
Papyrus was more of a mid-range fighter.  His Gaster Blasters were not as strong, big or as developed as Sans, but his bone attacks were second to no one.  He was a true opponent of Undyne, and had even survived the few skirmishes he had made against Asgore.  He would not fall as easily as the human thought.
Bones erupted from the ground and appeared everywhere in the sky.  Front, left, behind right, above and below.  Nikki was completely surrounded.  With simply a wave of his clawed hand, Papyrus let them fly.  To his astonishment, Nikki dodged every single one with absolute ease.  Every move she made was thoroughly calculated.  She wove her way forward toward them.  Always advancing.  When she was in front of Papyrus, she made her own slash with her knife, attempting to sever him from the pelvis to the shoulder.
For a moment, time stood still for Sans.  He wasn’t going to watch his brother die again, was he?  Not like he was with the usual abomination?  No… he couldn’t let that happen!
Before he could do anything though, Papyrus spun and moved, appearing directly behind the human.  Swinging his foot out far, he kicked the human in the back, sending her forward and tumbling into the snow.  “IMPRESSIVE HUMAN, YOU ALMOST HAD ME THERE.  BUT NO ONE DEFEATS THE TERRIBLE PAPYRUS!”
The snow began to melt around the human as a sinister laugh rang out.  Tremendous amount of heat radiated from the human where they stood.  Sans checked them again.  They had taken some damage, but not a lot.  Nowhere near enough.  Their defense was too high.  “Ah… you need to shut your mouth bone man.” they said, brushing off the snow from their clothes.  To the brothers’ surprise, orange sparks briefly gleamed before dying out in the cold.  “I like your style Papyrus,” they admitted, “but can you keep up with me?”
All Sans saw was a flash of wing and Papyrus was once again driven backwards, this time because Nikki had punched him in his lower jaw, hitting him hard enough to crack the bone.
“PAPS!” he screamed.  He summoned his bones then, as the human pivoted to make another attack.  The bones erupted between Papyrus and Nikki, sending her jumping back to avoid damage.
“I thought you would have been stronger considering how you moved your mouth at the beginning of all this.” She smirked.  “But I guess you showboat to make up for a lot, don’t you?”
Sans’ eyesight went red with fury.  “SHUT THE FUCK UP!” he screamed, setting off a single Gaster Blaster, which she easily dodged.  “YOU KNOW NOTHING!”
Nikki chuckled.  “Come on Sans.  I know your moves and I know you’ve read my stats.  How about you give up while you have the chance, hm?”  Her own eyes flared, red as the sparks she had summoned.  “It’ll turn out better for you after all!” she cackled.
Sans jumped off from where he was in the tree, and summoned three of his Blasters. One after another they went off, slowly driving her backwards.  Just as Sans thought he could drive her away from the two of them, a single snowball hit him in the face.  “Got you!” she cried out triumphantly, rushing forward, her hand in a power-thrust position.
Shit!  Sans teleported away, summoning his bones to take the hit.  They crumpled into dust upon impact, not startling her… she didn’t even take any damage.
This might be one enemy that the two of them just couldn’t win against… Sans felt the movement behind him.  Papyrus.
He was holding his jaw, and one leg shook to hold his weight but he was in one piece.  Sans was relieved but he knew that he wouldn’t survive another hit.  “let’s finish this.  right now.” he told Papyrus, reverting to their secret language.
 Nikki’s eye furrowed in confusion.  Good.  She didn’t understand.  They could use that as an advantage.
Papyrus eyed Sans warily.  “HOW?”  he asked
A large, shit-eating smirk spread across Sans’ skull.  “undyne and the gaster technique of course.  overwhelm and punish.” he said easily, loving the growing confusion and annoyance on Nikki’s face.  But she was a honourable warrior.  She paced around them, looking for an opening, but not attacking.  Waiting for them to be ready.  But that’s when the kill felt even better.  No cheap shots.  Just honour.  And determination.
Papyrus snorted, he actually snorted at Sans’ statement. “I LIKE IT.  I ALWAYS KNEW THAT YOU WERE A SMART ASS.” he said, once again summoning his long bone sword, and posing.
“I don’t care what tricks you have planned.  I can take you on!” declared Nikki, as she reached into her pocket and threw something.  Papyrus and Sans dodged as one, separating from the other as the sound of metal whistled past their skulls.  They were shuriken!  Some sort of ancient human weapon.
It was time to be done with this.  This had gone on far too long and Papyrus was hurt.  Sans summoned his bones, creating a maze that Nikki attempted to navigate, while again advancing towards them.  She suddenly jumped back and flung something else at Sans, causing him to teleport to Papyrus’ side.  A thin, glimmering needle was stuck in the ground where had stood, seconds before. Was there any weapon that this person didn’t have on them?
Their wings unexpectedly flapped open and down, sending Nikki high into the air as she dropped something from above.  Sans didn’t take any chances, he couldn’t afford to.  Clutching his brother tightly, he teleported them away, behind a rock.  A small explosion erupted from the clearing.  Sans scowled.  Damnit this chick was packing heat, and she was unpredictable… and a damn good fighter.
 As much as he hated to admit it, Papyrus could learn a thing or two from her. “Come on out guys…” Nikki sang, as she lightly landed on the ground.  “You know I’ll find you eventually…~”
Catching Papyrus’ eye, he made a sign.  Papyrus stared at him for a moment, smirked and nodded.
* * * * *
“Come on guys, I haven’t got all day!  I told you I’m already late for my meeting!” Nikki said, annoyed now.  The fight had been fun at first, sure she had taken some damage but she was kicking the Fell’s asses!  She couldn’t wait to tell Precious about this!
She saw two shadows hiding behind rock.  The two skeletons must be trying to hide from her, make a break when they could.  Nikki chuckled again, reforming into her normal, almost human form again.
Stealthily making her way over to them, she took care to be quiet and duck behind everything that she could.  She didn’t want them to hear or see her coming.  Surprisingly, they didn’t make a move.  Just sat there, still as stone. This was going to be easier than she thought~
She jumped in front of the stone, knives drawn and at ready.  To her surprise, no skeletons greeted her.  Just two, smaller Gaster Blasters, magic formed in their jaws and ready to fire.  “Damn it!  Fuck me!” she explained as the magic was released and sped towards her.
As the world faded to white, she heard Red chuckle.  “Can be arranged for later, sweetheart.”
* * * * *
She awoke much later.  Groaning she attempted to move her aching body, only to find her arms hanging above her head.  She woke fully with a gasp and stared upwards.  Handcuffs were on her wrists and attached to the ceiling, while a body-cuff held her waist to the wall.
They obviously weren’t taking any chances with her escaping.
“Those cuffs you wear are anti-magic.”  Papyrus told her from her side.  “Any magic you attempt to use will be absorbed and then used against you.  You shall be taken to the Capital in the morning, where you will find your death by King Asgore himself.  You should feel honoured though,” Papyrus said, “not many creatures do so well against me and my brother in battle.”
He closed and locked the door behind him, confining Nikki to the dark prison, with only the window for light.  She sighed, uncomfortable.
A shadow passed by the window and Nikki looked up to see a familiar furry face staring at her, its buck teeth glinting in the moonlight.
“Took you long enough.” she told the other.  “What happened to you?”
The beaver sighed and readjusted her hat.  “Hey.  Figured I would give you guys some alone time, see if anything happened…” the beaver replied, shooting the bound demon a wink.
“Oh fuck you!”  Nikki spat.  She usually enjoyed Buck’s jokes, but here and now was far too much.
Buck just sighed.  “And I had just got the key for your chains.” She sighed in dramatic fashion, showing a tiny silver key.  “Sans hid in it his mustard bottle… disgusting…” she shuddered.  “But if that’s the way you’re gonna be I can mosey on out of here and be on my way…”
“Buck no wait!  I’m sorry…  Precious!” Nikki called out, to the disappearing beaver.  She was once again alone.
A sudden weight on her left hand had her looking up.
Buck.
“Now, would I ever leave you hanging?” she asked, unlocking the one hand and then the other, moving on to the body-cuff.
Nikki took in a deep breath as the cuff released around her.  “No you definitely would not…” she admitted.
Buck nodded, crawling to Nikki’s shoulder, careful not to jostle the mask.  “Come on.  We have salami pizza at the base.  It’s spicy…”
Nikki quickly climbed up the wall and immediately had the two of them out the window.  As they made their way over to a familiar portal Nikki chuckled.  “Stretch and I are so going to need to plan some revenge for you taking your sweet-ass time though.” she said chuckling over Buck’s surprised squeak and blush.
DESIGNING AN AIRBNB RENTAL IN SOUTHEND-ON-SEA
Out of the blue, this summer I was contacted by Fresh Kidz Lets, a company based in Southend-on-Sea who bought and renovated run down flats to then jazz them up and put on the short term letting market (most of the time, Airbnb). Since a) I like designing and b) I love using Airbnb's I was well up for it. I was even more up for it when Yemi, the founder (and now friend), was like 'do what you like. I trust you'.
WHAAAAT! This is music to the ears of any designer. And trust me he did. I was basically allowed to do what I wanted.
THE BRIEF
Yemi wanted something to suit weekend travellers, couples mainly. Fresh Kidz lets have a theme of naming properties after music, so this one was named 'The Love Below' after Andre 3000s seminal work from 2003 (such a freakin' good album) which triggered the idea for the design scheme.
The budget was very small which helped me to get creative and made me look at some options that I might not have before! Was a good challenge as a designer I think, even if it can be a little stressful at times. The fact that it was going to be rented out on Airbnb helped me make some decisions too. It meant I could be a bit more crazy - after all people are looking for something that's a bit different to their home and is totally instagrammable!
Now because this was my first flat with his company I didn't wanna go too crazy - because most people's crazy is my version of tame. So I decided on cool, but edgy, and I went for a bit of a boutique hotel vibe.
These were the plans...
BEDROOM
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the bedroom I was super keen on doing black glossy walls with bright colour pops for the furniture and accessories. I wanted it to feel cool, sexy and a bit retro in this room, so I went for the dark style with a neon sign to give it a pop. Think 70s sleazy motel but like, way cooler. And Of course I made sure to include a ridiculously comfy mattress from my fave mattress brand, eve.
Pieces:
Alana gold bed, £349 from Made.com
Arnie clothes rail, £18 from Habitat
Bumble side table, £70 from Habitat
Zans velvet cushion cover, £50 from The Cuzon Market
Custom neon sign, POA, Bag & Bones
Vintage film noir poster, Etsy, from £6.95
eve memory-foam double mattress, £599
LIVING ROOM
Tumblr media
In the living room I wanted something bright and fresh. I decided on ice cream pink walls with a paprika red velvet sofa. Who says that red and pink is a colour clash hey? I wanted to connect all of the rooms in the flat by using the same flooring throughout - I knew I wanted something black and white, perhaps diamonds (I actually ended up going for something slightly different to the above). Even though this was a low budget flat I still wanted it to have some luxe finishes like velvet and brass.
PIECES
Atworth Red Velvet sofa bed, Willow & Hall, £1320 - Can I just say...  how bloody sexy is this for a sofa bed?! I think it's possibly the most gorgeous of any sofa bed I've ever seen.. you'd never even know! This was definitely the star piece of the whole property.
Martini side table, West Elm, £159
Crosley record player, Urban Outfitters, £89
Pink cushion cover, H&M Home, £12.99
White geo cushion cover, H&M home, (similar here), £3.99
TILES FOR THE BATHROOM AND KITCHEN
I didn't get heavily involved in the design of the bathroom and kitchen this time round, but I did get to pick out some uber cool tiles from British Ceramic Tile for use in both areas. For the kitchen I chose the from the Feature Floors HD distinction range, the grey matt wall & floor tile which has an incredible marble effect like so...
and then I chose the White Gloss Wall tile from the cosmopolitan range and decided to lay them out as demonstrated on their website as I thought it was an interesting adaption to the usual brick style subway tiling we see so often.
Tumblr media
Now I'll let you in on a little secret... the flat is finished and there are a few more extra fun surprises. Just for a laugh, here's what the living room started out like before the renovation...
Tumblr media
It's like a completely different place now! Here's how it looked before the reno.
I'll be doing a reveal within the next couple of weeks so keep your eyes peeled!
We have a new one-shot for you ;) A/U Laura is the new teacher at a high school in England. On her very first day she meets one of her new colleagues, a certain blue-eyed someone...
(There’s a very little crossover hidden in the story, in case you wonder about 2 certain names ;))
Laura stared at the lounge’s kitchen unit. They had just brought in a freshly brewed pot of coffee, the smell was delicious. The woman who had showed her in - what was her name again, Ella? No, Elsa… something like that – had told her to make herself comfortable and help herself to any refreshments she needed. Headmaster Adar was still in a meeting, but he’d be with her as soon as possible. Another wave of coffee drifted over to the settee she had settled down on. A glance at the clock, located above the door, told her she had only been waiting for a minute. If the woman had been right, Richard wouldn’t be out within the next five minutes. Making up her mind, Laura got up and strolled over to the unit, opening cupboards until she found coffee cups. There were countless of different cups and she chose one decorated with an old ship. It somehow appealed to her.
“That’s mine.” A deep, rough voice startled her. She almost dropped the cup, but was able the compose herself. Turning around, Laura discovered the voice belonged to an even rougher-looking man. He appeared to be slightly older than her, his hair was black with the occasional grey stray showing and it was pulled back into a ponytail. His attire was very neat, he wore black trousers and a dark blue shirt covered with a black waistcoat. The most prominent and catching part of him was his face though. It was covered in scars, Laura suspected they were the remains of a nasty acne in his youth, and his features were interestingly asymmetric and yet, he had the most beautiful pair of blue eyes Laura had ever seen.
“Sorry, but that’s my cup you’re holding.” He repeated himself, though trying to sound more polite than before. Laura collected her thoughts and offered him his cup. “I’m sorry.” she said, then added “I didn’t know.”
“Don’t worry. You’re the new one aren’t you?”
It was a normal question; however, she found it difficult to figure out whether it was sincere small talk or whether he just felt obliged to say something. “Yes, I’m Laura Roslin.” She said, trying to sound passive. The man nodded, but still showed no signs of interest. Laura turned back to the cupboard trying to decide which cup she would use instead. She hated to admit it, but that man made her edgy. It took her a lot of effort not to simply leave the room. Just as she was about to take another cup, he spoke again. “That one belongs to Jack.” She rolled her eyes.
“Maybe you could just point out which cups do not have an owner yet.”
Instead of replying, the man bent down, opened another cupboard and pulled out a white mug. He simply placed it in front of Laura and then went back to sipping his coffee.
Laura stared at the mug for a few seconds, then decided two could play this game. Without one word of gratitude, she took it and filled it with coffee, milk and sugar. The first sip of the now semi-hot liquid was bliss. It surely wasn’t the best brand of coffee she had ever tasted, but at this moment it was just the relief she needed. Closing her eyes, she hummed.
“Literature department?”
“Yes.” It was difficult to retain a polite tone through clenched teeth.
“You’re American.” Somehow she could detect scepticism in his voice. Laura sniffed.
“How well observed. Doesn’t mean I’m unable to read and teach literature though.”
They stared at each other for a moment. Neither blinking. Then, to her surprise, the stranger raised his eyebrows and chuckled. He bowed his head. “You’re right of course.”
Her reply was a triumphant hum. “Thank you, Mr. ?”
“Adama, Bill Adama.” He offered her his hand now. “I work for the history department.”
She nodded in acknowledgement.
“So this is your first day?” It seemed she had mastered and passed his strange trial, for now his tone of voice was much more inviting.
“Yes. No. I’m only here to meet Mr. Adar and get to be shown around. He’s still in a meeting though, one of the other teachers welcomed me and led me in here, a E… -”
“Elsie?” He offered. Laura instantly nodded. “Yes, her. It was a bit difficult to remember. Her accent, is that the local accent?”
Bill chuckled again. “No, she’s Scottish. You’ll recognise the Yorkshire accent when you hear it, though barely any of the pupils speak it. Only the older generations; was a quite a challenge getting used to it when we moved up here.”
“Oh, so you’re not ‘native’ either?” She asked.
“Not exactly. I’m from London. Moved up here when I got the job offer a couple of years ago.”
Another hum, but this time it was warm and inviting.
“Which part of the States are you from?”
“Los Angeles.” she replied. She dreaded questions about her home, about her past.
“What brought you here?” Good. That way she could luckily avoid talking about her former life.
“Richard. Um, Mr. Adar, I mean. We are old friends, he was an exchange student at my university ages ago.” To Laura’s surprise Bill didn’t seem to find these news a cause to smile like she did.
“I see.” He simply said.
She was glad that in that very moment Richard and another man entered the room. She wasn’t sure why, but the lack of interest and joy in her connection with Richard suddenly hurt her.
“Laura!” Richard greeted her in a tight hug. “How are you?”
“Fine. I’m fine. It’s good to see you Richard, thank you for this opportunity.” Her gratitude was sincere, her smile wasn’t though. Laura still hadn’t learned how to react to being questioned after her wellbeing, even if it was only meant as a polite inquiry.
Richard seemed satisfied. “Good. We’re glad to have you here.” He then turned around, inviting with a gesture of his arm the other man to join their conversation. “This is Charles Carson. He’s the head of the Literature department, he’ll be showing you around in a second.”
Mr. Carson shook hands with Laura. He was a tall man, with a very stern expression. However, once having exchanged a couple of words, Laura got the feeling that she shouldn’t trust her first impression with this one. When their convoy left the lounge to move on to Richard’s office, she also noted that Mr. Carson waved good-bye to Bill, whereas Richard simply seemed to ignore the other man. She hesitated, then turned around and nodded at him. Bill was leaning against a table, his coffee in his hand and his face fixed in a stone-like passive expression. But nonetheless he nodded to her as well.
H E A D C A N O N S
christian fields was born as the oldest to a younger sister, lucy fields, in massachusetts to a fairly wealthy family. the family didn’t want for much, they had the means to obtain what they needed and were comfortable in their lifestyle thanks to their parents jobs (a lawyer and a real estate agent).
christian was thirteen when their mother fell pregnant again, and having spent far too much time bickering with lucy growing up, he wasn’t thrilled to learn about the new member of the family at first. it was only as time went on, he became more comfortable with the ideea, growing into the big older brother he knew that he could be. the family became closer than they had been.
when his mother went into labour, christian had enough of an understanding to know that whatever was going on, wasn’t exactly good. if things were normal, there wouldn’t have been a mad rush to the hospital, there wouldn’t have been as much panic as there had been. all he could do was try and keep calm, try and keep lucy calm, and wait for any news that might come.
good news didn’t come at all though, with aph and fetal hypoxia resulting in the loss of not only their baby sister (hazel, as she was henceforth known), and their mother.
things got harder from there on out, with their father withdrawing from them completely when he wasn’t completely berating them for the choices that they were making in their lives. christian put his head down in school, not only to keep on his father’s good side but to be that role model for his sister that his father was no longer stepping up to being.
christian went on to attend princeton university, flitting between medicine and law as his father had tried to talk him into a number of times. despite that however, he had always felt more drawn to medicine, and went on to study at university of maryland.
it was while studying at the university of maryland that christian met brooke walker, who was also studying medicine. to say that he fell for her charm would be an understatement, and the two continued their romance throughout their time at med school. it was only when it came to being matched to different hospitals, brooke’s being seattle and christian’s being new york, that ultimately pulled the two apart and their relationship ended.
christian had a natural flare for plastics almost as soon as he started his residency, and it became a no-brainer for him. he worked hard, he proved himself, and he secured not only a fellowship at tulane - which is where he met angelica.
angelica was a neuro fellow at tulane for the same period that christian was, and they clicked from the moment that they met. everyone could see it a mile off, as if it might have been written in the stars, meant to be. they were careful though, knowing that the promise of getting attendings positions in the same place were slim to none.
but it came through, and the pair headed back to the same hospital where christian had done his residency in new york to kickstart their careers as attendings. it was picture perfect, a fairytale to say the least.
christian struck up a good working relationship with lucas williams, with christian taking a special interest in the reconstruction surgeries of lucas’s patients, it only became natural that their strong working relationship grew into a friendship that extended beyond the confines of the hospital walls.
when angelica fell pregnant in 2018, christian was excited. it hadn’t been their plans as such, but nonetheless he was more than excited to take on the challenge to be a father. he shared the news quickly with his sister, there was nobody else he wanted to know before her.
october of 2018 angelica and christian welcomed a baby girl, annabelle hazel fields, who became the centre of his universe very quickly. it was perfect, they had the jobs, they had the house, they had the little girl. their lives were coming together, almost complete.
that was, up until the winter of 2020. shortly after annabelle’s second birthday, angelica was involved in a car accident on her way to the hospital. it had been late at night, an urgent page for one of her patients that had her leaving their home and moving with haste to the hospital, only for a drunk driver to run a red light, and ultimately take angelica’s life.
christian was broken, but had to hold himself together for annabelle. he knew they he wouldn’t be able to get through it alone - opting to call on the support network of his sister and uproot their lives to seattle.
