That's from The Conscientious Moomins!
After Snufkin and Moomintroll meet up and head towards Moominhouse, the comic's obligatory Some Guy comes in and Snufkin subsequently ditches everyone since he didn't like the new guy's vibes.
Turns out the new guy's there to basically shame the Moomins and their Valley about not being productive or progressive enough and it really hit Moominpappa in particular straight in the fragile masculinity so he decides they'll change things around starting tomorrow. The next morning he wakes up early and gets out of bed, then the rest of his family get up and assume he's a burglar. Thankfully he wasn't shot...
Tumblr media
From the atleast 5 attempts aimed at him.
He's really lucky that his son's an awful shot, huh.

Sadling
A minor character in The Conscientious Moomins, he is a representative of the Widow's Weal insurance company and with his gloomy personality manages to make Moominpappa sign up for the insurance if Moominmamma were to ever become a widow.
Wimsy
A recurring minor character in the comics, he is Moominpappa's old best friend from his youth. He is a constant smoker, poker player and prefers to sleep under the table rather than a bed, but he is a charming and fun man who also became friends with Snufkin as they were building a jetty in Moomin and the Golden Tail. He also played a major role in Moominpappa and the Spies, in which he and Moominpappa try to relive their youth but get caught up in Soviet espionage.
He also gets adapted into an episode of the 90s second series, though with a new look and an original plot.

The Length Of Almost Every Episode In The Moomin Comic Strip
The Moomin comic strip written and drawn by Tove Jansson, then written by Lars and drawn by Tove Jansson, then written and drawn by Lars Jansson, had a total of 73 distinct stories under its banner after a lifetime of 21 years, but how long are those individual stories, by strip number? If you want to find out, this post is for you!
Unfortunately unlike some Moomin fans I don't have every single story (especially the later ones) in my grubby little paws so I can't tell you the length of those, but if you happen to be one of those fans who do have those comics in their grubby little paws, please be a dear and tell me for how many strips those stories took to tell their truly wonderful stories of borderline illegal shenaniganary committed by the main characters, underbaked political commentary and benevolent racism (uhm. Just talking about Lars' writing choices there).

I have SLEPT and I can’t help but remember some of the small things from ep 1 again. Just how episode 1 Moomintroll differs from the end of season 3 Moomintroll and how he’s presented as a boy still trying to be a grown moomin in the eyes of everyone and himself.
This isn’t meant to be a hot take or anything, I mean, even Gutsy says that one of the big focuses is Moomintroll growing into adulthood and what develops through that process. But I’m just eyeing the little things like how the first time we see him (awake) he’s got his head stuck in a cloud mobile above his bed, everyone treating him like a child despite him insisting he’s grown (though, as we’ve witnessed, he’s got a lot of growing up to do outside of insisting he’s not a child), his standing on his toes while greeting Mymble to appear taller, even when the mymble children are terrorizing the family, Moomin’s expected to “play” with them to keep them occupied (I use the term expected loosely, it’s more like an assumption put on him by family who are used to treating him like a child). This is a boy trying to appear older to his family and their friends because he’s finally decided that he’s not a child anymore, he’s ready to make the leap into adulthood.
ALSO also, I can’t wait to see him grow up some more, because boy does he need to be more conscientious of his actions and how they affect his loved ones, and there are moments in s3 that remind me that...yeah he is still a bit selfish and he needs to work on that.
So like, bottom line, I love seeing how much Moomin’s grown since e1 s1. He’s still got a lot of growing to do, but at least we can see the differences from the then and now.

my thoughts on snufmin <3
note to all of you who are oblivious: snufmin = snufkin x moomin.
it’s actually pretty clear to me that this ship is at least semi-canon just via some interactions sprinkled about the comic and cartoon -
take this scenario from one of the comics for example, which can be found in the comic ‘the conscientious moomins’: moomin and little my had found a burnt out campfire as well as some flowers dropped on the ground that led moomin to believe snufkin had been there. he follows the clues, which puts him in a lot of tight spots, given how moomin’s body isn’t suited for the tight squeezing and climbing snufkin must have done.
little my, as moomin squeezes between two trees: pursuing snufkin has certainly put you in some tough spots!
...
little my, a few panels ahead: don’t look so pleased. snufkin must drop them [the flowers from his wreath] on purpose.
moomin, holding a flower: of course! he wants me to find him!
little my: you looks silly. do you like him so much? >:)
moomin, looking away: er...i...i suppose so...
little my: don’t you know?
moomin, blushing: yes, but one doesn’t say it.
also take this line from the cartoon ‘adventures in moominvalley’: episode 13, the last dragon on earth:
little dragon: *squeaking as he looks out the window at the departing snufkin* :’(
little my: he only seems to like snufkin! >:(
moomin: well, we all like snufkin...
also how earlier in the episode moomin told snufkin about the secret long before he did anyone else, and how dismayed he was about snufkin saying he’d go south. but then again, these could also just be attributed to how close they are as best friends.
either way, moomin and snufkin do value their time together a lot and have a very good relationship. despite snufkin generally liking his time alone with his thoughts, he often does go to moomin for company. likewise, moomin often goes to snufkin to relax and get life advice.
very wholesome no matter how you look at it. good job, tove <3
(i’m not even covering ‘moominvalley’ the 2019 series, as i have no easy way to watch it, but it probably has enough snufmin material of its own :’] there’s a video having to do with it that you might as well watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSGCye50WCs)
have fun folks! be gay, do crime B)

I think one of my favourite Moomin comics so far is Conscientious Moomins.
Besides being a bit of a commentary on society valuing duty over passion, and the culture of ambition and feeling guilty when you’re not ‘making something of yourself’ (*cough*HMM*cough*), it’s probably got some of my favourite interactions between Moomin and Snufkin.
It’s the same comic that has Moomin tracking Snufkin...
Tumblr media
... but everyone’s talked about that part, so I’m just going to go to the shenanigans. Snufkin knows that things are about to go nuts from the get-go and makes himself scarce.
Tumblr media
This eventually leads to each Moomin character getting a job (even though they don’t really need money in this setting and can just provide for themselves). Still, they all become self-conscious when they feel they’re not doing anything ‘meaningful’ enough or dutiful.
Moomin doesn’t get a job initially, but eventually feels pressured to improve himself in the eyes of society. Snorkmaiden gives him a personality building course.
Tumblr media
I think I just love Snufkin’s ‘Dude, what are you on about?’ expression in the 2nd and 3rd panels. The following strip kinda resonates a bit on certain days, I admit. But I like Moomin’s idealism about the whole thing, as if building a personality’s something like writing a paper. ‘Wanna get this done so we can go do fun things.’
Snufkin’s pretty patient with the Moomins in general in this one (though he also hides for most of this strip and bails as soon as things start changing at the start).
Tumblr media
He even helps Moominpappa construct the office for his business, even if he’s solidly skeptical about the whole thing.
Tumblr media
It doesn’t really work out, needless to say, and Moominpappa starts up a gambling den in there, instead.
Meanwhile, we’re unfortunately at that time in history where comical couples butted heads about stuff frequently and it’s always played for laughs and that’s just how it was. Snorkmaiden’s drawn to a fellow worker because he’s more responsible than Moomin, which leads Moomin to give up on this brand of self-improvement.
Tumblr media
What I do find funny about this strip is Moomin going “See?? SEE?? I showed her!!” and Snufkin (who probably isn’t really tuned in to the scenario) is like “yeah just a smidge i guess. you go, bud.”
Anyway, Snorkmaiden quits the job after the ambitious dude isn’t quite up to her speed, personality-wise.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, and by this stage Snorkmaiden was the only one working a proper job. I love how they’ve set up a Payday Party. Nowadays we celebrate that by feeling invincible for maybe a day. Or very relieved. Or, well, low - but let’s not get too into that.
Meanwhile, Moomin takes up a job that seems to be a perfect fit for him! Folks want paths decorated with seashells, so he’s been hired to collect some!
Tumblr media
Yeah, this resonates too, unfortunately. It probably also resonated with Jansson, who reportedly came to tire of working on Moomins after working on this comic strip for so long (She would soon meet the love of her life, though, so things looked up eventually. Plus her brother would willingly take the reins of this particular beast, and she was soon free to do as she liked).
Speaking of freedom, Moomin finally gets tired of capitalism this hectic and diligent way of life, and turns to Snufkin for help.
Tumblr media
I find it funny that Snufkin was just waiting in the background for Moomin to figure stuff out. He probably could have thrown a spanner in the works of this whole thing from the start, but he also probably wouldn’t have bothered unless Moomin specifically asked him to help out.
I also like how he’s like ‘Alright, I’ll help. But first - here’s a song to chill to.’ It’s a warm kind of setting.
The rest of the comic is basically Snufkin convincing everyone to give their jobs to folks who really need them - and for Moominmamma (who was wrapped up in the idea of being conscientious and hating it) he convinces her to stop making all the jam she produced in her fit of diligence. She’d made so much that it was starting to ferment.
Which leads to this happy ending.
Tumblr media
Anyway, I guess it’s not this simple nowadays, or perhaps anydays.
I don’t really have much more to add on this front. Only that this was fun.
I recommend giving this stuff a read, if you prefer the sillier (but occasionally more societal commentary-ish) side of Moomins. Oh, and it’s got a wealth of standalone images, but I think folks have already dived deep down that well.

MEET THE MUSE POWER HOUR! 🌿
Tumblr media
━━ take a seat and REPOST this detailed little bio with criteria to introduce the world to your muse.     no reblog karma or tagging ━  if you see this on your dash, feel free to partake in it!
Minä tulen milloin minulle sopii. Ehkä en tule ollenkaan, ehkä menen aivan toiselle suunnalle.
🌿 ━ B A S I C S .
NAME: Jaakko Heikki Järvinen → officially Suomen tasavalta / Republiken Finland / Republic of Finland. Or Suomi/Finland, simple as that.  NICKNAME(S): Jaakki, Jaakka, Jaska, Muumipappa. AGE: Physically he’s around 25 years of age, his real age is unknown due to vague dating of the past, probably around 1800-ish, give or take a century. Probably less than that though. GENDER:  Cis male, masculine appearing. NATIONALITY:  Finnish.
🌿 ━ A P P E A R A N C E .
EYE COLOR: His eyes are blue and one would call them icy [ LF-01 ] has it not been for a certain warm vibe they send out. They’re not hollow, neither are they two voids embed in their sockets. They’re tired but certainly not washed out of feelings or emotions. His eyes truly are the mirror of his soul, deep and enshrouded with a mist of ambiguity and yet if you’re familiar with him it’s unnecessary to ask him how he’s doing – you can read it all in them. HAIR COLOR: It’s not platinum blond, neither is it blond of dark hue. It’s somewhere in the middle [ or “Beeline Honey” here if you require a full name ]. It’s a color very pleasant to the eye, reminiscing the fields scattered all over the country. HAIRSTYLE: To put it simple, it’s messy. It’s most usual to see him with his hair parted in the middle of his forehead and running down a cascade of split ends, grim reminders of his famous and somewhat magnificent dreads he wore in the late 70s until early 90s and the fact that he’s perpetually at odds with probably every single hairdresser on this planet. It’s just not easy to trust someone with a sharp object in hand working around your neck. HEIGHT: He’s not short but he’s not the tallest either. He stands at 178 cm (or 5′10″). It’s not difficult for taller people to underestimate him and his abilities to wreck some shit despite not having several inches more in his height number. This has been a fair warning. WEIGHT: Last time he checked it was something around 90-92 kg (198-202 lbs). He just cannot deny himself something good to eat every now and then and this beer is just a bit too tempting to say no to it. BUILD: Because of the reasons stated above Jaakko is chubby and his cheeks are pudgy. Sometimes he feels a bit self-conscious about his appearance but it does not happen often enough for him to particularly care. He likes to joke that he’s as round and soft as a Moomin and he’s honestly not too far from being right.  TATTOO(S): His most prominent ones would be a bear on his right arm and a piece of forest on his left leg. He also has two smaller tattoos, a ‘sisu’ written on his left wrist and a Snufkin on inner left forearm. Jaakko’s not planning on getting any more tattoos. SCAR(S): This is a touchy topic for him and confronted about his scars he’ll withdraw into himself and just leer at the asker if they’re not close enough to him (but those are familiar with the meanings and reasons behind his scars so no conversation about them should occur). There’s one on the central side of his chest, leaning a bit towards left side, just about where his heart is. This one tells a tale of losing Karelia in Winter War. The other looks more terrible and represents the loss of Petsamo, or Finland’s Left Arm, to Soviet Union in the aftermath of Continuation War. It’s a long and writhing around his left shoulder – just where the arm connects with the corpus – scar that resembles the loss of his entire arm for several years to come. On the side of his neck there is also an ugly scar he bears after having been shot in artery what caused instant death on the battlefield (also during Continuation War). If one is a careful watcher they might also notice a shot scar on his left calf during Civil War of 1918.
They’re his relatively fresh scars, otherwise he’s covered in more or less faded ones, products of endless wars conducted on his territories in the past. He’s not certain where each of them comes from anymore, there’s too many, especially on his back and sides. There’s also several cut scars on his hands, he practiced the knife game on his hands very intensely. PIERCING(S): He wears them only occasionally but he has at least one eyebrow piercing and an industrial in right ear, alongside a few helix piercings on both ear flakes [ here’s a picture with explanations in case anyone needs it ]. There’s at least one pair in his upper lobe, too. He used to wear a lip piercing as well but he sort of forgot and he’d have to re-pierce it if he wanted to wear it again. PREFERRED FASHION: A disaster. He’s actually quite happy with his thrift store clothes, only slightly modified by his Finnish sister figure or human friend so they fit him better or embrace his personal style and taste a bit better. He’s either wearing checkered shirts with jeans, black band shirts or your local grandpa sweaters. All together with just tragic socks someone should get rid of immediately. And crocs. Jaakko can dress properly when he has to but it’s always an adventure as well. There’s this one suit he has but it could as well pass for a part of a museal exhibition. TYPICALLY SMELLS LIKE: It’s usually his aftershave, soap he uses during morning shower and cologne – if he doesn’t forget about it. His natural smell could be described as this earthy smell that lingers in the air after the tempest in a birch forest; smell of fields of grain rippling in the wind;  freshly baked crispy rye bread; tint of licorice, sea salt with faint alcoholic breeze accenting the whole. OTHER: He has several moles on his body, not too many, and mostly located on his neck and back. His right arm is stronger and longer a bit than left one which gets weary much faster than its right equivalent. His eyebrows are rather thick but not overly so, he’s more likely to be seen with some facial hair than with none at all. He enjoys simple jewelry and wears pendants such as Ukko’s hammer or a bear claw pendant.

💡Lightbulb Moment💡
You've heard about Snufkin's boldest fashion statements, but have you considered the humble but fabulous attire of Moominpappa? Pappa de Moomin? Mr. Moomin? No? Let's fix that.
First, we start off strong with his bold departures from his classic tophat. One must say, he does strike a certain fancy even in different hats!
Tumblr media
[Pith helmet - Moominvalley Turns Jungle; Captain's Cap - Moomin Under Sail; Chef's toque - Emancipated Moomins; sau' wester - the Conscientious Moomins; the Lighthouse Keeper's hat - Moominpappa at Sea; Soup pot - Moomin and the Comet]
Then we continue with a step back into the times he has decorated his classic tophat - rather fashionable statements I must say! It's always a delight to see some natural floral decor on something that very much represents an overwhelming formality.
Tumblr media
[Roses, flowers, grapes - Moomin Begins a New Life; 2 roses - Moomin and Family Life; Feather, forester star badge - the Conscientious Moomins; Captain's gold braids - Moomin Under Sail; Flower and boots - Moomin Lives Dangerously]
Then we move onto his most uncharacteristic styles: having both a hat AND an outfit to go with it! Some may contain his classic tophat, others are other hats we've already seen on him, while there are also others with their own exclusive hats! Amazing!
Tumblr media
[Sau' wester, coat, pants, socks(?) - Moomin Under Sail; Gold braided tophat, coat, pants, boots - Moomin Under Sail; Striped pajamas, sleeping cap - Moomin Builds a House; Tophat, swimsuit - Moomin and the Good Old Days {also seen in Fuddler's Courtship}; {Amish or Derby?}cowboy hat, belt with holsters, spurred boots - Moomin Goes Wild West; tophat, frog button striped pajamas - Moomin Falls in Love]
And to top it off we have other outfits that don't fit the previous categories, usually it's an extra accessory involving his classic tophat, others are of him WITHOUT the hat! (Shocking!)
And then we have him in the Hobgoblin's hat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[the Hobgoblin's hat - Finn Family Moomintroll; Tophat and scarf - Winter Follies; Tophat and necktie - Club Life in Moominvalley; dark frog button bathrobe - Comet in Moominland {stage-play}; light frog button bathrobe - Comet in Moominland {book}; tophat and towel - Fuddler's Courtship; Tophat, black gloves - the Conscientious Moomins; Tophat, fur scarf, gloves - Moomin Christmas]
After witnessing this fashion show, in honour of the days where Moominpappa wasn't quite so fashionable, I would like to share this snippet from Finn Family Moomintroll, from when he tried on the Hobgoblin's hat;
'How do I look?' asked Moominpappa.
'It's all right,' said Moominmamma. 'Yes, you look very handsome in it, but it's just a tiny bit too big.'
'Is it better like this?' asked Moominpappa, pushing the hat onto the back of his head.
'Hm,' said Moominmamma. 'That's smart, too, but I almost think you look more dignified without a hat.'
Moominpappa looked at himself in front, behind and from both sides, and then he put the hat on the table with a sigh.
'You're right,' he said. 'Some people look better without hats.'
