But when the battle of the five armies was won and Y/N walked through the vast doors of Erebor, all changed. For the first time in his life, Nori felt like there was a chance -perhaps maybe small- for them to be together.
He quickly learned that having romantic feelings for someone and acting upon those were two very different things, leaving him unsure how to handle the situation. He did return to his old ways of watching her though, often hiding in secret passages and rooms that had a good view of the hall of kings. And while he sat there, he wondered in what ways he could ask her to court him.
So far, he had zilch good ideas.
Nori knew he needed to up his game, which was why he had brought some food and drinks with him today, to make the passing time more enjoyable. But his thoughts combined with the food proved to be too much distraction and before the real burglar of the company of Thorin Oakenshield knew it, Dwalin stood before him.
‘Nori.’ The burly warrior declared. ‘I did not know ye used this as a hideout.’
‘This isn’t what it looks like.’ Nori said quickly, knowing how weak this excuse must sound to his tough warrior friend. ‘I was just enjoying a… picnic. In solitude.’

How Efinix is Conquering the Hurdle of Hardware Acceleration for Devices at the Edge

In previous articles, we established the many ways FPGAs surpass other AI chipsets for running machine learning algorithms at the edge in terms of reconfigurability, power consumption, size, speed, and cost. Moreover, how the microarchitecture-agnostic RISC-V instruction set architecture (ISA) marries up with the architectural flexibility of the FPGA seamlessly. However, the apparent lack of mid-range, cost-effective FPGAs and their less-than-straightforward design flow are a major bottleneck — the software skills required for the fully custom hardware description language (HDL) implementation are difficult to find and often come with a steep learning curve.
Efinix fills the gap with FPGAs built on the innovative quantum compute fabric made up of reconfigurable tiles known as exchangeable logic and routing (XLR) cells that function as either logic or routing, rethinking the traditional fixed ratio of logic elements (LEs) and routing resources. This allows for a high-density fabric in a small device package where no part of the FPGA is underutilized. The potential of this platform transcends the typical barriers facing edge-based devices today: power consumption, latency, cost, size, and ease of development.
Possibly the most striking feature of Efinix FPGAs is the ecosystem and state-of-the-art tool flow surrounding it that lowers development barriers, allowing designers to readily implement AI at the edge using the same silicon — from prototype to production. Efinix has embraced the RISC-V, thereby allowing users to create applications and algorithms in software — capitalizing on the ease of programmability of this ISA without being bound to proprietary IP cores such as ARM. Since this is all done with flexible FPGA fabric, users can massively accelerate in hardware. Efinix offers support for both low level and more complex custom instruction acceleration. Some of these techniques include the TinyML accelerator and predefined hardware accelerator sockets. With approaches such as these, the leaps in acceleration accomplished delivers hardware performance while retaining a software-defined model that can be iterated and refined without the need to learn VHDL. This results in blazing-fast speeds for edge devices, all while consuming low power and functioning within a small footprint. This article discusses precisely how the Efinix platform simplifies the entire design and development cycle, allowing users to take advantage of the flexible FPGA fabric for a scalable embedded processing solution.
Barriers at the edge — a dam-blocking progress
From massive wireless sensor networks to streaming a high-resolution 360o immersive AR or VR experience, most of the world's data lies at the edge. Disaggregating the compute burden from the cloud and bringing it closer to the devices opens doors for next-generation, bandwidth-hungry, ultra-low-latency applications in autonomous driving, immersive digital experiences, autonomous industrial facilities, telesurgery, and so on. The use cases are endless once the enormous roadblock of transmitting data to and from the cloud is sidestepped.
However, the very defining factors of low-latency, power-hungry compute at the edge are the very same factors that pose a significant design challenge for these small but prolific power-limited devices. How then is it possible to design a device capable of processing the power-hungry relevant ML algorithms without having to invest in elaborate technologies? The solution has been to implement any hardware deemed sufficient to run the suitable applications and algorithms (e.g., CPU, GPU, ASIC, FPGA, ASSP) while accelerating the more compute-intensive tasks to balance the compute time (latency) and resources used (power consumed).
As with any innovation, the landscape of deep learning is continually shifting with updating models and optimization techniques, necessitating the use of more agile hardware platforms that can change almost as rapidly as the programs running on them with little to no risk. The parallel processing and flexibility/reconfigurability of FPGAs seem to line up seamlessly with this need. However, making these devices available for mainstream, high-volume applications requires lowering the design barriers for configuring and accelerating the FPGA fabric — a time-consuming process that normally requires a high degree of expertise. Furthermore, traditional accelerators are typically not granular enough and incorporate large pieces of a model that typically do not scale well. They also generally consume far too much power and are, more often than not, proprietary — causing engineers to relearn how to use the vendor-specific platform.
The Sapphire RISC-V core
Creating an application on the RISC-V Core in C/C++
Efinix squarely addresses all of these potential obstacles by taking on the challenge of making FPGAs available to the AI/ML community in an intuitive way. The RISC-V Sapphire core is fully user configurable through the Efinity GUI; this way, users do not have to know all the VHDL behind implementing the RISC-V in the FPGA and can exploit the straightforward programmability of common software languages (e.g., C/C++). This allows teams to rapidly generate applications and algorithms in software at speed. All the required peripherals and buses can be specified, configured, and instantiated alongside the Sapphire core to deliver a fully configured SoC (Figure 1). This RISC-V capability includes multi-core (up to four cores) support and Linux capability, delivering a high-performance processor cluster to a designer's FPGA application as well as the ability to run applications directly on the Linux operating system. The next step — hardware acceleration — is greatly simplified with hardware-software partitioning; once a designer has perfected their algorithm in software, they can progressively start to accelerate this within the flexible Efinix FPGA fabric. However, before we move on to the next step of hardware acceleration, it would be important to understand the inherent benefits of the RISC-V architecture and how it can be exploited for use within the FPGA fabric.

Custom-instruction-capable RISC-V
The RISC-V architecture is unique in that it does not have all of its instructions defined; instead, there are a few instructions left open for the designer to define and implement. In other words, a custom arithmetic logic unit (ALU) can be created, and it will perform whatever arbitrary function when called upon by the custom instruction (Figure 2). These custom instructions will have the same architecture as the rest of the instructions (e.g., two registers in, one register out) granting a total of eight bytes of data to work with and four bytes that can be passed back to the RISC-V.
However, since the ALU is built within the FPGA, it can both access and pull data from the FPGA. This allows users to expand beyond the eight bytes of data and make the ALU arbitrarily complex — giving access to data that was put out on the FPGA previously (e.g., access to data from sensors). The ability to have an arbitrarily complex ALU is a multiplying factor for speed when it comes to hardware acceleration. Efinix has taken this ability of the custom instruction and adapted it for the AI and ML communities with the TinyML platform.

The TinyML platform — a library of custom instructions
Hardware acceleration with the TinyML platform
The TinyML platform streamlines the process of hardware acceleration where Efinix has taken the compute primitives used in TensorFlow Lite models and created custom instructions to optimize their execution on accelerators in the FPGA fabric (Figure 3). Through this, the standard software-defined models of TensorFlow are absorbed into the RISC-V complex and are accelerated to run at hardware speed, taking advantage of the rich, open-source TensorFlow Lite community. The entire development flow has been streamlined using the popular Ashling tool flow to make setup, application creation, and debugging a simple and intuitive process.

Efinix TinyML takes these TensorFlow Lite models, and using the custom instruction capabilities of the RISC-V core, accelerates them in the FPGA hardware.
Many of the TinyML platform's libraries of custom instructions are all available to the open-source community on the Efinix GitHub for free access to the Efinix Sapphire core and everything that is needed to design and develop highly accelerated edge AI applications.
Accelerations strategies: an overview
The combination of the RISC-V core, the Efinix FPGA fabric, and the rich, open-source TensorFlow community allows for creative acceleration strategies that can be broken down into several steps (Figure 4):
Step 1: Run the TensorFlow Lite model using the Efinity RISC-V IDE,
Step 2: Use the TinyML accelerator,
Step 3: User-defined custom instruction accelerator,
Step 4: Hardware accelerator templates.
As stated earlier, "Step 1" is a standard process through the Efinity GUI where users can take the Tensorflow Lite models and run it in software on the RISC-V using the very same, familiar process one would with a standard MCU — without having to worry about VHDL. After Step 1, designers will, more often than not, find that the performance of the algorithm they are running is not optimal and therefore requires acceleration. "Step 2" involves hardware-software partitioning where users can implement the fundamental building blocks inside the TensorFlow Lite models and literally click and drag to instantiate custom instructions and get a massive acceleration on the way the model runs on the Sapphire RISC-V core.

User-defined custom instruction accelerator
"Step 3" leaves it open for designers to create their own custom instructions without leveraging the templates found in the TinyML platform, allowing users to innovate and create acceleration on top of the RISC-V core.
Hardware accelerator templates
Finally, after the required fundamental elements are now accelerated on the RISC-V, "Step 4" involves burying them inside the free Efinix SoC framework with "sockets" of acceleration. The quantum accelerator socket allows users to "point at" data, retrieve it, and edit its contents to, say, perform a convolution on bigger blocks of data.
The Sapphire SoC can be used to perform overall system control and execute algorithms that are inherently sequential or require flexibility. As stated earlier, the hardware-software codesign allows users to choose whether to perform this compute in the RISC-V processor or in hardware. In this acceleration methodology, the pre-defined hardware accelerator socket is connected to a direct memory access (DMA) controller and an SoC slave interface for data transfer and CPU control, which may be used for pre-processing/post-processing before or after the AI inference. The DMA controller facilitates communication between the external memory and other building blocks in the design by (Figure 5):
Storing frames of data into the external memory,
Sending and receiving data to/from the hardware acceleration block,
Sending data to the post-processing engine.
In an image-signal-processing application, this can look like leaving the RISC-V processor to execute the RGB to grayscale conversion as embedded software, while the hardware accelerator performs Sobel edge detection, binary erosion, and binary dilation in the pipelined, streaming architecture of the FPGA (see "Edge Vision SoC User Guide"). This can be scaled up for multi-camera vision systems, allowing companies to turn their designs into a product and deploy them extremely rapidly.

MediaPipe Face Mesh use case
The simplicity of this process might be better highlighted with an example. The MediaPipe Face Mesh ML model estimates hundreds of different three-dimensional facial landmarks in real-time. Efinix took this model and deployed it on the Titanium Ti60 development kit running at 300 MHz. As shown in Figure 6, convolutions on the RISC-V core contributed the most to latency. It is worth noting that the FPGA's resource utilization of close to 60% does not actually reflect the size of the ML model. Instead, this is due to the fact that the entire camera subsystem has been instantiated in the FPGA in order to perform acceleration benchmarking in real-time.

Simple custom instructions with the TinyML platform (Step 2)
Creating and running a simple, custom two registers in, one register out convolution instruction shows a four- to five-fold improvement in latency. This improvement continues as custom instructions used to accelerate the ADD, MAXIMUM, and MUL functions. However, latency improvements hit a plateau since the RISC-V is spending less time doing these operations (Figure 7).

Complex instructions with DMA (Step 4)
An arbitrarily complex ALU is also generated to replace the original CONV. This changes the slope of the original curve and dramatically improves the latency once more. However, FPGA utilization has also jumped up since the complex instruction has taken more resources inside the FPGA. Once again, the resource bar standing at nearly 100% is simply due the fact that the FPGA here contains the entire camera subsystem for demonstration purposes, what is important to note is the relative decrease in latency and increase in utilization (Figure 8).
What's more, switching to a larger FPGA, such as the Ti180, would run all of these complex instructions for massive acceleration without using even 50 percent of the FPGA resources available. These apparent tradeoffs are precisely what allow engineers to readily visualize the balancing act between latency, power consumption, and the cost/size of the FPGA. An edge application that has stringent latency requirements but more lenient power constraints could opt to increasingly accelerate the design for a drastic performance improvement. In power constrained applications, this increase in performance can be traded off by reducing the clock speed for a more moderate improvement in performance at a dramatically lower power.

A paradigm shift in AI/ML development
In a nutshell, Efinix has combined the familiar development environment of the RISC-V ISA and exploited its custom instruction capability to function within the architecturally flexible FPGA fabric. Unlike many hardware accelerators, this approach does not require any third-party tools or compilers. The acceleration is also fine grain with the acceleration of machine instructions — a level of granularity that only makes sense with an FPGA.
The fact that edge devices can be prototyped and deployed on the innovative design architecture of the Efinix FPGA means the solution is future-proofed. New models and updated network architectures can be expressed in familiar software environments and accelerated at the custom instruction level with only a small amount of VHDL (with libraries of available templates to use for guidance). This degree of hardware-software partitioning where 90 percent of the model remains in software running on the RISC-V allows for an extremely fast time to market. The combination of all of these approaches yields an elegant solution that truly lowers the barriers to entry for implementing an edge device. Designers now have access to a world-class embedded processing capability that can be accessed with a state-of-the-art tool flow and instantiated on the revolutionary Efinix Quantum fabric.

Those who have seen a Pik-Up before will immediately recognise the silhouette of this new model, but Mahindra has given the vehicle’s styling a big freshen-up with a new grille, bonnet, headlights and fog lights, as well as the addition of LED DRLs on the S10 model. The new look is more aggressive than before, and it certainly brings overall styling up to date.
What’s The Interior Like?
Compared to some of the Japanese (and German) 4×4 dual-cab utes on the market, the Pik-Up’s cabin is quite narrow, but the upright windscreen, deep window line and tall roof height provide airiness and feeling of generous space.
The driver’s seat offers loads of fore and aft adjustment, and height adjustment, so the Pik-Up will suit shorties and tallies alike. The steering wheel is rake (but not reach) adjustable and features controls for audio/phone and cruise control. There’s a six-inch colour touchscreen on S10 models and an LCD display in the instrument binnacle that shows the gear selected, odometer, trip meter, engine temp and fuel level.
The front seats have fold-down armrests but there’s not a lot of storage options to secure small loose items in the cabin; the centre-console bin doesn’t have a lid, glovebox space is limited and the door pockets are small. Having said that, there are a couple of cupholders in the centre console and a small slot for your phone next to a 12V power outlet.
The back seat offers enough width for three adults and there’s plenty of leg room and loads of headroom, along with three headrests and three-point safety belts in all positions. The back seat is also equipped with ISOFIX points in the outboard positions and three top-tether points. Despite the top tethers, I struggled to fit a booster seat in the back because the headrests got in the way, and they couldn’t be easily removed because the seat’s backrest is bolted down.
This would be an easy enough fix if you wanted to leave a booster seat in there full-time, but it’s a bit of an inconvenience for part-time use. Rear-seat passengers have their own AC outlets, cup holders in the door trims and a centre armrest when there are two or fewer occupants.
Outward visibility is superb thanks to the aforementioned big windows and the short, stubby bonnet, and the external mirrors provide a good view around the steel tray as fitted to the test vehicle. The S10 comes standard with a reversing camera, but it’s still a little hard to judge distances when backing up due to the overhang of the tray.
The tray itself is a beauty. With easy-to-use catches on the drop-sides, a durable chequer-plate floor and plenty of lashing points on the headboard. Those who opt for the well-side tub also score a sports bar.
What’s It Like On The Road?
The Pik-Up’s modest claimed peak outputs of 103kW and 330Nm result in surprisingly good on-road performance. The engine itself is remarkably smooth and quiet and is happiest low in the rev range where it can make the most of the flat torque curve, which peaks all the way from 1600rpm through to 2800rpm.
The six-speed manual gearbox doesn’t like to be rushed, but it will swap cogs with buttery smoothness so long as you’re slow and deliberate with the gear lever. Try to shift too quickly and it can get a little notchy.
With six forward gears, there’s a good spread of ratios. Fifth gear is tall enough for relaxed highway touring, and the engine is so quiet that it’s easy to forget there’s another gear to play with on the open road. Select sixth and the tacho needle will hover around the 2100rpm mark at 100km/h, which is right in the middle of the torque peak, so unless you’re in a hurry, or you’re confronted with a very steep incline, there’s never really a need to downshift when cruising on the highway.
Ride quality is very good for a dual-cab 4×4 ute, even when unladen. The rear springs have three main leaves and three load-helper leaves, which offers compliance when there’s no load in the back and control when there’s a heavy load. The claimed payload is a whopping 1210kg for the cab chassis variant, which would still be around a tonne even with the steel tray fitted.
The power-assisted steering is well weighted and provides reasonable feel and feedback. Body roll is well controlled when cornering and the Pik-Up offers predictable handling on smooth and rough roads. Manoeuvring in tight spaces can be a challenge due to the 13.4m turning circle.
As with most dual-cab utes, the Pik-Up has front disc brakes and drums at the rear. Brake feel and performance left nothing to complain about on test and the ABS didn’t feel overly intrusive on slippery surfaces.
There’s a bit of wind noise around the A-pillar and mirrors at highway speeds but it’s not excessive. Road noise isolation is good and the 245/75R16 General Grabber HTS rubber is not overly aggressive, so tyre rumble is barely audible with the windows up. Importantly, there are no annoying squeaks or rattles to be heard when driving over rough roads; the Pik-Up is a well-built bit of kit.
On test, which included a mix of urban, highway, freeway and off-road driving, the Pik-Up averaged 10.2L/100km. Depending on load and driving conditions, you can expect a safe touring range of around 750km from the 80-litre fuel tank.
What’s It Like Off The Road?
Slip the transfer case into low-range and the and the Pik-Up will crawl along at a walking pace in first gear. Front wheel travel isn’t fantastic but there’s a fair bit of axle articulation at the rear. If the Mahindra lifts one of its rear wheels in undulating terrain, the auto-locking Eaton rear diff ensures the wheel still with grip gets an equal drive. This auto-locking arrangement means the electronic traction control continues to operate on the front axle even when the rear diff locks up, providing the Pik-Up with plenty of ability in uneven and slippery terrain.
Ground clearance is listed at 210mm, but the approach angle is hindered by the plastic air dam at the front while the side steps could take a pounding if you’re not careful when cresting erosion mounds or driving on rocky terrain. Oddly, the painted rear bumper is still attached to the chassis of the S10, even when fitted with the genuine accessory steel tray, and this would be the first point of contact if you exceeded departure angle.
The Pik-Up’s deep window line and short bonnet aid visibility when driving on bush tracks, making it easy to see where vehicle extremities are.
What Safety Features Does It Get?
Active safety features on the Pik-Up include ABS, ETC, ESC, roll-over mitigation, EBD and a hill-hold function. There’s a collapsible steering column and dual airbags for front seat occupants while those in the rear get three-point safety belts and headrests, but no airbag protection.
Other safety/convenience kit includes auto wipers and auto headlights, along with the aforementioned LED DRLs. The Mahindra Pik-Up scored a three-star ANCAP rating in 2012, which was prior to the introduction of ESP.

Individuals who make at least $10,000 a month in Network Marking on a consistent basis, never do such silly stuff. They never use dishonest or duplicitous means to reach people. They don't spam people over the Internet and theyre not sales call some idiots on a business opportunity list. They don't alienate everyone they know, and they aren't chasing skinny rabbits. They are talking to qualified prospects, and getting quality appointments to make quality presentations.
Lets look at the marketing process something I think a lot more people should think of a lot more. Heres why ...
Most individuals approach marketing as selling. And selling as getting the dumb prospect to buy something he doesn't need. They devote their career to learning NLP, sleight of hand, and a host of other manipulative techniques to coerce prospects into buying things they don't want or need. Anthony Robbins and a legion of little Tony wannabes have created an entire cottage industry teaching people to do this. Many MLMers have delved the fray, bringing these and other high-pressure sales techniques into Mlm.
These are the jackasses who call during your dinner hour, opening with lines like, Jim you have no idea me yet but Im partnering with an opportunity so amazing, blah, blah (Scream).
I approach marketing entirely different ...
I have no interest in trying to sell something to someone who doesn't want it, and I suggest you don't either. True marketing is based on a simple - yet quite profound philosophy:.
Were looking for people ... who are looking for what we have.
Put into more specific terms it means this: Our job is to identify qualified prospects then put our marketing message in front of them. Give them enough information to make the right decision for them.
If that means they join your opportunity or buy your product, good. If it means they dont, thats good too. Your job is not to sell your opportunity or products to those that don't need or desire them.It is to find the people who want what you have and give them enough information so they can decide if getting it from you is a fair exchange of value.
Sorting, not Selling ...
Network Marketing is much more a sorting process, than it is a selling business. It is this fundamental difference in philosophy that separates me from the multitudes of sales trainers, marketing gurus and book authors out there. I take no perverse pride in selling ice cubes to the Eskimos. I am not here to prove my manhood by demonstrating I can manipulate or trick a guy into buying something he doesn't want, or cant afford. Theres no integrity in that.
I do take great pride, however, in presenting my marketing message in the best, most effective manner possible to qualified prospects. I want to outsell, outmaneuver and out market my competitors, but I want to do it by offering a better value. Then I want to market that better value better than anyone else out there. And thats what I want for you ...
What the Successful People Do ...
For more than 15 years, Ive been studying what worked and what didnt, in Network Marketing. Learned what the long-term successful people did and why. What a System Looks Like ...
Your system should completely delineate and spell out the entire process that a distributor will follow: from where to find prospects, how to approach them, how to sponsor them, and how to train them to reach the higher pin ranks. (For the sake of simplicity and your understandingI use the term pin ranks to mean people who reach the top levels of your compensation plan, whether theyre called Diamond Directors, National Vice Presidents or Master Coordinators. The name comes from the fact that distributors receive a pin upon achieving these ranks.) Each stage in this process should be clearly defined and taught to the distributor at the appropriate time.
Heres a breakdown of the steps that might be included in a system. This is not meant to be the be-all, end-all. If fact, your system may be quite different. I offer this example, so you can see the kind of structure Im talking about.
Step One The Pre-Approach ...
This is the qualification step the one that determines whether you have a suspect or an actual prospect. This can be done simply with qualifying questions, or qualifying questions combined with a pre-approach packet. This packet would include materials designed to screen out people who are not good candidates for the business. (An example is my Lifestyle Freedom Pack.) Pre-approach means before the approach. In other words, this step will determine whether or not you would approach them about the opportunity at all.
Another way to do this is with a brief, mini presentation. This is a quick overview, usually 30 minutes or less, to see if your candidate is a serious prospect. This is usually done one-on-one in a non-threatening environment (example: in the prospects kitchen or at a coffee shop). When you first begin, this should be done as a two-on-one, meaning you and your sponsor together presenting to your prospect. This can also be done in a small group meeting in your living room.
The interested prospects would be given a specific set of materials to study, usually called a take home packet. This packet would have a break down of how money is made in the business and some supporting materials on the products, usually a brochure or catalog.
Step Two The Presentation ...
This is where the prospect takes a second look at the presentation, usually at a larger home or hotel meeting, but it can also be done one-on-one. Like all steps, there should be a clearly defined set of specific materials (the Follow-up Packet), which should be given to the prospect. This is usually more detailed information than the previous packet.
Step Three The Follow Up ...
This step might involve getting the prospect to another, bigger presentation (like a large hotel open meeting) or simply bringing one more packet of information to the prospect and encouraging them to make a decision. Check with your sponsorship line. In either event, the packet of information and the procedures followed should be exactly the same for every distributor on every level.
Step Four The Enrollment Process ...
This is the step that falls after the prospect nods and is ready to become a distributor. NOTE: This can happen at step two, or step three. Each prospect lands at his or her own speed. Its important that whether or not a prospect poises to join at step two (thats great!) you still expose them to the information in step three to preserve the integrity of the system.
Like our other steps, the enrollment process should be completely translated, step-by-step. The training that you receive should be the same, exact training that someone on your 25th level, five states away, will receive when joining your organization. (See my Learn more training materials).
These four steps are the foundation for your system. Whatever which program youre in, it should generally parallel this process. Again, though, check with your sponsorship line for specifics. The later steps of red tape will vary more greatly from program to program. They involve managing organizational growth and developing leadership skills. (I explore them more deeply in the Building Depth and Leadership Strategies chapters of my book.).
Overall, however, visualize a system as a complete, step-by-step process that anyone who joins your organization whether theyre a doctor or waitress, Ph.D., or high school dropout can duplicate. It means you should have the opportunity to fly to a city 3,000 miles away hire someone on your 50th level that youve never met and be teaching the same principles and specifics theyve been being informed the person whos on your 49th level.
Youll notice this doesn't involve one of the dishonest and obnoxious practices we discussed earlier. Your system should focus on identifying qualified prospects, educating them, and allowing them to make the right decision for them. A lot of people ask me how this variety of system works today, in a more competitive environment. The answer is, better than ever! In fact, prospects today are so jaded today, so assaulted, consequently skeptical, they are completely switched off by the high-pressure techniques. The kind of honest, easy marketing were speaking of is very attractive to them.
