Gaza militants, children among 24 dead as Israel Battles Hamas

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel unleashed new airstrikes on Gaza early Tuesday, hitting the high-rise home of a Hamas field commander and two border tunnels dug by militants, as Hamas and other armed groups fired dozens of rockets toward Israel. The escalation in the conflict was sparked by weeks of tensions in contested Jerusalem.

Since sundown Monday when the cross-border attacks began, 24 Palestinians — including nine children — were killed in Gaza, most by airstrikes, Gaza health officials said. The Israeli military said 15 of the dead were militants. During the same period, Gaza militants fired more than 250 rockets toward Israel, injuring six Israeli civilians in a direct hit on an apartment building.

In a further sign of rising tensions, Israel signaled it is widening its military campaign. The military said it is sending troop reinforcements to the Gaza border and the defense minister ordered the mobilization of 5,000 reserve soldiers.

Yesterday, I wrote about how Russian hackers infiltrated the largest fuel pipeline on the East Coast. A dummy argued with me about it.

Gas stations along the U.S. East Coast are starting to run out of fuel as North America’s biggest petroleum pipeline fights to recover froma cyberattack that has paralyzed it for days.

From Virginia to Florida and Alabama, fuel stations are reporting that they’ve sold out of gasoline as supplies in the region dwindle and panic buying sets in. The White House said it was aware of shortages in the Southeast of the country and was trying to alleviate the problem.

Four days into the crisis, Colonial Pipeline Co. has only managed to manually operate a small segment of the pipeline — as a stopgap measure — and doesn’t expect to be able to substantially restore service before the weekend. The risk is that by that point drivers or airlines may already be suffering severe fuel shortages, while refineries on the Gulf coast could be forced to idle operations because they have nowhere to put their product.

U.S. average retail gasoline prices have risen to their highest since late 2014 due to the disruption, almost touching $3 per gallon. That could add to broader inflationary pressures as commodity prices from timber to copper also surge.

14-year-old charged with murder after death of 13-year-old Florida girl

Authorities in Florida arrested and charged a 14-year-old boy with murder a day after the disappearance and death of a 13-year-old girl.

The parents of Tristyn Bailey, a student and cheerleader at Patriot Oaks Academy in St. Johns, Florida, reported their daughter missing Sunday morning after she failed to return home the night before.

Bailey was last seen at 1:15 a.m. Sunday near the Durbin Amenity Center, according to post announcing the missing person from the St Johns County Sheriff's Office.

Throughout Sunday, members of the community, classmates and Bailey's cheer squad searched for her, NBC News affiliate WTLV reported.

But shortly before sundown, St Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick announced that Bailey's body had been found in a wooded area.

Russian spy unit suspected of directed-energy attacks on U.S. personnel

U.S. officials suspect that a notorious Russian spy agency may be behind alleged attacks that are causing mysterious health issues among U.S. government personnel across the world, according to three current and former officials with direct knowledge of the discussions.

Officials do not have a smoking gun linking Russia’s military intelligence unit, the GRU, to the suspected directed-energy incidents, said the people, who were not authorized to speak publicly. The intelligence community has not reached a consensus or made a formal determination. However, officials have told lawmakers that they have intensified their investigation in recent weeks to include all 18 federal intelligence agencies, and that it is focused on the GRU’s potential involvement, according to a congressional official briefed on the matter.

Man with Tiger Evade Police (Texas, of course)

Victor Hugo Cuevas, 26, was taken into custody Monday night and charged with evading arrest, but the whereabouts of the tiger were still unknown, the Houston Police Department said on Twitter.

“Anyone with information on the tiger is urged to contact HPD Major Offenders,” the police said in a tweet.

Eyewitness videos taken Sunday show the tiger sprawled on the lawn of a home on Ivy Wall Drive in West Houston.

The tiger, which is classified as an endangered species, then got up and roamed into the street as onlookers took videos of it from a distance, and one off-duty sheriff’s deputy who lives in the neighbourhood drew a handgun.

Cuevas, who officials said was the tiger’s owner and who had been leasing the home, emerged from the residence to corral the tiger. He kissed it as he led it away, a video shows. A lawyer for Cuevas said Monday that he was not the tiger’s owner.

When the police arrived, Cuevas was in a Jeep Cherokee with the tiger, according to the authorities, who said the driver got away after a brief pursuit.

Obviously, if you see a Cherokee with a big tiger in it, it would be good to call us,” Ronald Borza, a commander with the Houston Police Department, said at a news conference Monday afternoon before Cuevas was taken into custody.

An arrest warrant shows that Cuevas is charged with murder in a July 2017 fatal shooting of a man in the parking lot of a sushi restaurant in Richmond, Texas.

Cuevas, of Richmond, was released on $125,000 bond last December pending trial, according to court records.

REVIEW: Sin Bad / Bad Wig - "Sin Bad Wig" Split

I have a bias. I want to say it right off the top. I grew up near Chicago, and I've been a Cubs fan for a long time. As such, it's in my nature to talk shit on Milwaukee. It can't be helped. But, hey, we're not talking baseball. We're talking music. To that point, this split record is fucking great. Sin Bad and Bad Wigs are both phenomenal bands who know how to write the hell out of a song. The split is a four and four gimmick, and it's a great example on how goddamn hooky punk rock can be.

Sin Bad have the first half. Four songs in about 11 minutes. They definitely fall more towards the poppy side of the punk rock genre. Maybe Swearin' by way of Dirt Bike Annie? I don't know. Either way, the dual vocals of Audrey Pennings and Ben Woyak don't mess around. The first inclination would be to call this pop punk, but I don't think that's entirely accurate. Is it poppy? Absolutely. Is it punk? Yep. But I don't think this band is too concerned about playing within that genre's yard. Power pop, garage, it's all here.

Bad Wig play have the second half. Their sound is much more rooted in garage rock. While these songs have a bit more grit to them, they sound positively shiny compared to the band's 2015 EP (contrast this version of "Machinehead" to the one on there). The instrumentation is fantastic. Ryan McCrary's guitar fucking kills. Their songs have a kind of retro sound. This band kind of made me think of the Gaza Strippers for whatever reason. I mean, I don't know. There is a good helping of 90s garage punk in these songs is what I'm saying, I guess.

All in all, this is a great record. If one band does't click with you, the other probably will. Both are great examples of what they do. Also, totally unrelated to sound, but I'll always fuck with a record that can also be an answer on Jeopardy.

Yesterday was the birthday of the great Rick Sims, leader of one of the best if most underrated ‘90s punk acts, the Didjits. You can delve into these excellent Illinois noise-riff exploder jokers in my book, We Never Learn. They’re a Top 50, maybe 40 band in the puke green stucco-lined halls of We Never Learn HQ, so if you’ve had interest piqued by any of our posts, you should track down any and all Didjits records soon. I guess the best is Hornet Pinata (Touch & Go, 1990), but they all have their ‘70s boogie rock-stripped-of-bullshit-with-drag-race-speed-and-spazzy-smarm charms.

Conozcamos a Yoshua Okón

Durante dos décadas, Yoshua Okón (Ciudad de México, 1970) ha construido representaciones sociales que navegan entre la ficción y la realidad. Video-instalaciones con elementos documentales en la misma medida que simbólicos, los cuales operan de manera simultánea. Así, el artista coloca al espectador en un espacio de cuestionamiento, y estimula –objetivo a priori– el pensamiento crítico de quien mira una filmación que sobrepasa la realidad, pero deja la duda de si lo es o no.

Lo hizo en proyectos tempranos como Chocorrol  (1997), que refiere al tema racial y al colonialismo en México, o en Risas enlatadas (2009) donde alude a los procesos de mecanización y esclavitud en la globalización, y más reciente en Freedom Fries: Naturaleza Muerta (2014) donde cuestiona la libertad del hombre en la era del consumo capitalista. Estos, y el resto de su obra, son ejercicios que parecieran establecerse en la ficción, pero se fundamentan en la realidad.

“En términos generales, mi obra asume que los humanos operamos en base a nociones de la realidad heredadas. Es decir, operamos en base a convenciones por lo que la mayoría del tiempo las ideas que tenemos de la realidad no han sido formuladas por nosotros mismos. Uno de los objetivos principales de mi práctica artística es precisamente estimular el pensamiento crítico. A través de imágenes y de representaciones performáticas, intento que quien esté confrontando a mi obra, incluyéndome a mí mismo, formule sus propias interpretaciones de la realidad”.

Así describe el fundador de La Panadería en los 90 y de la escuela SOMA en 2009 el cuerpo de obra que ha realizado en 20 años, y que ahora revisa en Yoshua Okón. Colateral, su primera exhibición retrospectiva en el Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC). A cargo del curador John C. Welchman, la muestra hace una lectura de las acciones en que el artista crea un entorno caótico para repensar, a veces desde la sátira o la parodia, condiciones sociopolíticas históricas: migración, racismo, esclavitud, globalización, consumismo, poder, libertad, y más.

“En el fondo, mi interés está en hablar sobre la cultura dominante. Es decir, sobre el mainstream, sobre aquello que todos tenemos en común. Esto por lo general lo abordo a través de casos específicos, a través de casos que involucran a comunidades o grupos específicos. Así es que trabajo de lo muy particular para llegar a lo muy general, a lo estructural”, apunta en entrevista quien inaugurará la exposición el 7 de octubre, la cual permanecerá hasta febrero de 2018.”

Si bien es una mirada al pasado, la curaduría no sigue un eje temporal ni temático. Se plantea como un circuito en el que se correlacionan los proyectos. Ello evidencia cómo se ha construido el discurso estético de Okón que reflexiona sobre un sistema global, y no personal. Por ejemplo se confrontan Bocanegra(2007) con “Chocorrol (1997), Indian Project y Walmart Shoppers ambas del 2015.  Lo mismo se da cuenta de la presencia latina en Estados Unidos con Octopus(2011), o de la situación en Israel con la pieza Gaza Stripper (2006)

Tras hacer una lectura retrospectiva de su trabajo, Okón define la construcción de su discurso como intuitiva, y no lineal: “No siempre es clara la dirección, por lo que en muchos momentos es necesario aventarse al vacío. Por esto mismo resulta muy satisfactorio poder mirar 20 años hacia atrás y constatar que sí existe toda una serie de meta-discursos en mi obra, que sí existe una coherencia y que, a pesar de la diversidad de las obras, sí se puede pensar en términos de un cuerpo de obra”.

Cry Songs

My younger sister Sarah and I are notorious for coming up with weird shit.

Ever since she overcame infancy and I was able to interact with her as an adolescent, we became partners in utilizing our wits and intelligence to understand the peculiarities of life and to explain what we figured was inexplicable.  We’ve even developed names and explanations for things that either didn’t make sense to us, or that we felt we could improve or clarify.

For example, we all have elbows. Sarah and I found that the extra skin covering the area is your ‘puckervalley.’ Not sure why, just is.

As we got older and our minds expanded, our shenanigans continued.  Just a few years ago while in college, I began to listen to music pretty much all day.  Excluding the hours I spent in class, I listened to music at every waking moment - my playlist served as my alarm clock (Good Morning by John Legend woke my ass up for class everyday for more than two semesters) and I listened to music in my headphones at disturbing volumes as I drifted off to sleep.  My music library quickly expanded and began to adapt the music preferences of my closest peers as I yearned to discover more songs, both old and new.

I had always listened to good music, but I realized that certain songs definitely made me FEEL more than others. For example, when I heard A$AP Rocky’s Fuckin’ Problems ft. Drake, 2 Chainz & Drake for the first time, I was definitely moved.  And during a quick trip to Taco Bell, my homie turned on 2 Chainz and The-Dream’s collaborative track, Extremely Blessed and I was completely entranced by the ballad dedicated to strippers.  

During a call with Sarah, I struggled to explain how these and other songs made me feel.  All I could say was that they evoked something in me that almost made me want to cry.  And from that moment, Sarah and I began to refer to these tracks as “cry songs.” 

To me, the only evident commonality amongst these songs is that the artist completely showed out in its execution and performance.  Cue Travis Scott’s performance in Company featured on If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.  Scott’s raw vocals over haunting instrumentals are almost enough to make me tear tf up, if you know what I mean.
