Leonardo — He/Him. Four-Eyed Turtle. He’s the oldest but doesn’t really act like it. He’s very aloof and distant from his family, but will stick up for his younger siblings when they really need him. He’s a complicated guy who’s going through a lot of stuff. His favorite thing to do is preform as his Drag Persona (Venus De Milo) at The Battle Nexus— a drag club owned by famous drag queen Big Mama.

Donatello — She/Her. Indian Peacock Softshell Turtle. She somehow managed to have oldest daughter syndrome before she even realized she’s a girl. Homegirl’s stressed the heck out trying to keep her younger brothers from doing anything to stupid and also keep Leo from doing anything to stupid. She can be a bit of a stick in the mud because of that, and isn’t really great at communicating her feelings. Also she’s got a ‘crop top’ plastron because I love it when people give their soft shell turtles that it’s genius.

Michelangelo — He/Him. Reeves Turtle. Was the youngest for 13 years and still tries to use that against his older siblings. He’s just looking for a good time away from all the family drama and dysfunction. He’s a frequent partier and ends up with some issues later in life because of that.

Timothy Raphael — He/Him. Newly a Spotted Pond Turtle. Yeah so Raph got mutated. He was adopted into the family when he was 11, following the whole mutation incident. He used to be one of the child soldiers of the foot clan (long story) and actually got to being close friends with Donnie before the whole mutation thing happened. He’s still trying to work through the identity issues that came with all of that, and all the new ones that come along with this new dynamic.

Which countries would you consider to be the "most American", besides America itself? Interpret this question as you wish

normies will say canada. but the real answer is mexico.

i mean, obviously canada is more similar to america in superficial ways; we both speak english, we're of mostly anglo-saxon heritage, canadians consume our media, etc.

but when it comes to the /essence/ of our people? i don't feel a lot of kinship. canada doesn't feel /spiritually/ american at all. and i mean "american" in the sense of "of the new world." it feels very old world, very european. probably owning to it having been a european colony for so long (and i mean technically it is still a part of the british commonwealth and king charles is their head of state).

but mexico? oh man, next to america it feels like the /most/ new world country. when i think of mexico i think of conquistadors and vaqueros. i think of adventure and conquest and feuds. i think of cartels and militias and outlaws and shootouts. i think of revolutionary fervor, republican dreams, and visionary enlightened ideals. and perhaps they fell short of those dreams but at least they dreamed! canada was content being an obedient lapdog of european monarch. mexicans? they spilled blood for their independence! tell me which one sounds more like america.

americans are deeply religious people. so are mexicans. canadians are filthy atheists in comparison. i know that mexico has draconian gun legislation in comparison to america but they at least have their right to keep firearms enshrined in their constitution, and guns seem relatively commonplace in mexico compared to canada. in canada, their relationship with their natives is very hostile and cold and apologetic and just plain weird and pathetic if you ask me. but in america and mexico natives have been organically weaved into the national mythos in a way that is ennobling to all parties. mexicans love to larp as conquistadors and aztecs. americans love to larp as cowboys and indians. and as a result they both have that tension between christianity and paganism that i think contributed so much to what makes america so great.

mexicans love life. they love to drink and celebrate. they love god and their family and they're fiercely patriotic. i'd say red-blooded americans are the most life-affirming people on earth right now but mexicans are probably a not-too-distant second.

mexico is like america's dysfunctional younger brother. he's a little confused but he's got the right spirit.

if america suddenly stopped existing, you'd sooner find me in the sonoran desert in a compound with my revolutionary militia, drinking tequila, bumping chalino, and having shootouts with cartels than whatever the fuck happens in canada (nothing).

India Impressions (2023)

I just returned from a week-long trip to India. Most of this trip was meeting entrepreneurs and investors centered around spending time with the team from Bolt in Bangalore (a USV portfolio company). This was my second time in India, following a family vacation in 2015. Here are some observations from my visit:

First, the mood in the country feels optimistic and assertive. People I spoke to, not just from the tech ecosystem, but also drivers, tour guides, waiters, students, and professors, all seemed excited and energized. There was a distinct sense of India emerging as a global powerhouse that has the potential to rival China. As it turns out quite a few government policies are aimed at protecting Indian industrial growth and separating it from China (including the recent ban on TikTok and other Chinese apps). Also, if you haven't seen it yet, I recommend watching the movie RRR. It is a "muscular" embodiment of the spirit that I encountered that based on my admittedly unscientific polling was much liked by younger people there (and hardly watched by older ones).

Second, air pollution in Delhi was as bad as I remembered it and in Mumbai way worse. Mumbai now appears to be on par with Delhi. For example, here is a picture taken from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, which is en route from the airport, where you can barely see the high rise buildings of the city across the bay.

Third, there is an insane amount of construction everywhere. Not just new buildings going up but also new sewer lines, elevated highways, and rail systems. Most of these were yet to be completed but it is clear that the country is on a major infrastructure spree. Some of these projects are extremely ambitious, such as the new coastal road for Mumbai.

Fourth, traffic is even more dysfunctional than I remember it and distances are measured in time, not miles. Depending on the time of day, it can easily take one hour to get somewhere that would be ten minutes away without traffic. This is true for all the big cities I went to visit on this trip (Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore). I don't really understand how people can plan for attending in person meetings but I suppose one gets used to it. I wound up taking one meeting simply in a car en route to the next one.

Fifth, in venture capital there are now many local funds, meaning funds that are not branded offshoots of US funds, such as Sequoia India. I spent time with the team from Prime Venture Partners (co-investors in Bolt) and Good Capital among others. It is great to see that in addition to software focused funds there are also ones focused on agtech/food (e.g. Omnivore) and deep tech (e.g. Navam Capital). Interestingly all the ones I talked to have only offshore LPs. There is not yet a broad India LP base other than a few family offices and regulations within India are apparently quite cumbersome, so the funds are domiciled in the US or in Mauritius.

Sixth, the "India Stack" is enabling a ton of innovation and deserves to be more widely known outside of India (US regulators should take note). In particular, the availability of a verified digital identity and of unified payments interfaces is incredibly helpful in the creation of new online and offline experiences, such as paying for a charge on the Bolt charging network. This infrastructure creates a much more level playing field and is very startup friendly. Add to this incredibly cheap data plans and you have the foundations for a massive digitally led transformation.

Seventh, India is finally recognizing the importance of the climate crisis both as a threat and as an opportunity. India is already experiencing extreme temperatures in some parts of the country on a regular basis (the opening of Kim Stanley Robinson's Ministry for the Future extrapolates what that might lead to). India is also dependent on sufficient rainfall during the Monsoon season and those patterns are changing also (this is part of the plot of Neal Stephenson's Termination Shock). As far as opportunity goes, India recently discovered a major lithium deposit, which means that a key natural resource for the EV transition exists locally (unlike oil which has to be imported). India has started to accelerate EV adoption by offering subsidies.

All in all this trip has made me bullish on India. Over the coming years I would not be surprised if we wind up with more investments from USV there, assuming we can find companies that are a fit with our investment theses. In the meantime, I will look for some public market opportunities for my personal portfolio.

1.Sardar Udham

Length: 2h 42minute

Genre: Thriller, Crime, Biographical

Plot: Indian Revolutionary Udham Singh wants to avenge those lost in Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. 

Starring: Vicky Kaushal, Banita Sandhu, Amol Parashar, Kristy Averton, Shaun Scott.

Notes from me: The acting done by Vicky Kaushal as the titular character is absolutely phenomenal and just tugs at your heartstrings, also the last 40 minutes are absolutely tear jerking.

2. Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na

Length: 2h 35 minutes 

Genre: Rom-Com, Slice-of-life

Plot: BEST FRIENDS TO LOVERS!!! Two bestfriends Jai and Aditi are obliviously in love with each other until they start dating other people.

Starring: Genelia D’Souza, Imran Khan, Ratna Pathak Shah, Prateik Babbar

Note: COMFORT MOVIE!!!! I love absolutely everything, the connection between the friends, THE SOUNDTRACK!! 

3. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Length: 2h 30 minutes

Genre: Road trip, Comedy

Plot: Three friends Imran, Arjun and Kabir go on a road trip across Spain, before Kabir’s wedding and find imperfect flaws in their life, make decisions with the help of these friends and guide their way through life

Starring: Farhan Akhtar, Hritik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, Katrina Kaif

Note: love!! once again a comfort movie, leaves you feeling refreshed and wanting to go on a cross country road trip with yout friends!

3. Haider

Length: 2h 40 minutes

Genre: Drama, Thriller, Action

Plot:  An adaptation of the Shakespearean play Hamlet set in modern day Jammu & Kashmir. Haider returns to Jammu & Kashmir to find closure for his father’s death, but the states’ politics situation overpower him.

Starring: Shahid Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, Irrfan Khan 

Note: A great movie which does not just portray Kashmir as this “beautiful picturesque scenery” but the harsh political reality of this fractured state, which is not easy to portray. This, in my opinion is one of the best acting performance of Shahid Kapoor’s career. Tabu as always SHINES (she should be stored in a gold vault istg), Kay Kay Menon steals the show with his perfectly sinister portrayal of Haider’s Uncle.    

4. Kapoor & Sons

Length: 2h 12 minutes

Genre: Drama, Slice-Of-Life

Plot: Two brothers Arjun and Rahul return home to Conoor to visit their ailing Grandfather. During this stay the entire family discovers just how dysfunctional and fractured their relationships are. 

Starring: Fawad Khan, Sidarth Malhotra, Rishi Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah, Rajat Kapoor

Note: Albeit a slow 20 minutes in the start, the movie really engages you and makes you uncover the aspects of the Kapoor family with them and makes you realise just how broken and tired of the façade of happiness they truly are.

6. Guzaarish

Length: 2 hours

Genre: Drama, Romance 

Plot: Former renowned magician Ethan Mascarenhas is quadriplegic and expresses his guzaarish (request) for euthanasia.  

Starring: Hritik Roshan, Aishwariya Rai, Aditya Roy Kapur

7. Andhadhun

Length: 2h 18 minutes

Genre: Thriller, Crime, Comedy

Plot: Akash, a piano player pretending to be visually-impaired, unwittingly becomes entangled in a number of problems as he witnesses the murder of a former film actor

Starring: Ayushmann Khurrana, Tabu, Radhika Apte, Manav Vij

Note: TABU!!! Her portrayal of Simi, the wife of the film actor is so good and entrancing. Ayushmann in the film’s climax shines. The plot twists are chefs kiss.

Heart Berries: a Memoir by Terese Marie Mailhot
