"Jeopardy"

"I Lost on Jeopardy"
Fun fact: Not only does Weird Al's video feature the real Art Fleming and Don Pardo (the host and announcer of the original Jeopardy TV show), but it also features Greg Kihn (from the original song that Al's song is a parody of!) driving away in a car, referencing the end of his own music video.

The greg kihn band/ The break up song 🕺🎶
youtube
lyrics:
writings / compose:Gary Phillips / Gregory Kihn / Steve Wright
We had broken up for good just an hour before
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
Now I'm staring at the bodies as there's dancin' 'cross the floor
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
And then the band slowed the tempo and the music gets me down
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
It was the same old song with the melancholy sound
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
They don't write 'em like that anymore
They just don't write 'em like that anymore
We'd been living together for a million years
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
But now it feel so strange (out in the atmospheres?)
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
And then the jukebox plays a song I used to know
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
Now I'm staring at the bodies as they dancin' so slow
Uh uh uh. uh uh uh uh uh
They don't write 'em like that anymore
They just don't write 'em like that anymore
Now I wind up staring at an empty glass
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
Cause its so easy to say that you'll forget your past
Uh uh uh, uh uh uh uh uh
They don't write 'em like that anymore, no!
They just don't write 'em like that anymore
They don't write 'em like that anymore
They just don't write 'em like that anymore

Remembering Greg Kihn 1949-2024
Singer/songwriter Greg Kihn has died at 75. His band The Greg Kihn Band (he was the singer/guitarist/founder) had tons of power pop hits in the 80s. They loved naming their albums with pun-filled use of Kihn (too many corny titles to mention).

the "Jeopardy" single
Their 1981 song "The Breakup Song (They Don't Write 'Em)" was one of the great break up songs of all time. Hands down! It was also featured in a ton of soundtracks including Ted Demme's Beautiful Girls and an episode of The Sopranos. They followed up that hit with a cover of Tommy Roe's "Sheila", made famous by The Beatles version in 1962. In 1983, their biggest hit was released "Jeopardy". The music video was an MTV hit with his zombie movie influence. It spawned a parody from Weird Al Yankovic with "I Lost on Jeopardy". Not only did Kihn have a good sense of humor and greenlight the Weird Al parody, he actually made a cameo appearance in the parody video too. The band had another minor hit with "Lucky".
Kihn himself became a DJ on a CA classic rock station. Around 2011, I noticed he was following my documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66 on Twitter/X. I always thought that was so cool since I remembered seeing their videos on V66.
The link above is the obit from Ultimate Classic Rock.
