The year is 1792, and the mysterious Black Parade has become famous for saving people from the guillotine. Frank, an idealistic revolutionary, has been recruited by Korse to uncover the secret identities of the notorious Black Parade. What he discovers will change his life.

Michael didn’t seem particularly shocked when Gerard approached him with the idea, but then, Gerard had never seen his younger brother look particularly shocked at anything. He merely looked at Gerard, blinked once or twice, and repeated in a flat tone, “You want me to help you dress up like a woman.”

“It’s the stays in particular I think I’ll need help with,” Gerard told him. “Well, and buttoning the dress, and perhaps the wig.”

A World So Small

What Frank has no idea of at the time is that Michael has an older brother, whose presence in the house he conceals. Gerard is an eccentric recluse who spends most of his time hiding in the attic and avoiding any kind of interaction with people, but he finds himself fascinated with Frank, who in turn realizes that the house has secrets, and becomes determined to uncover them. When he finally does discover Gerard, their first meeting is only the beginning of their story.

Today, they'd woken up and Gerard was King of Illyria. Frank hasn't really been a stable boy since he ended up in the archduke's bed, but now Gerard's exile is over and he's king. Frank has to survive court, politics, and scheming nobles to figure out exactly what he is now.

31 Days of Dead 2019 | Introduction & Day 1: Ripple, Brokedown Palace, To Lay Me Down – New York, NY 9/20/70

Hey now! I’m very excited to bring you another installment of 31 Days of Dead. In case you are unfamiliar with my project, here’s a description of what it’s all about.

The idea for the 31 Days of Dead was hatched in 2010 when dead.net started providing free mp3 tracks for download from the band’s vast archives each day during the month of November. I thought it would be fun to keep the music flowing for another month by selecting my own daily picks in December. Having been a tape trader back in the 1980s, the idea of sharing the music that I love and turning people on to versions that they never heard was very appealing to me. And since I have a competitive spirit and enjoy a good challenge, I thought it would be fun to bring you a project that is at least as good as dead.net’s, if not better. That inspired my battle cry:

“When they go high, we go higher”

I had no idea where this would go when I started my first project in December 2010, nor did I care. I did it for no reason other than my own personal enjoyment – I still do. In the beginning, I posted my daily selections on the Phantasy Tour Phish discussion forum, and I sent daily e-mail blasts to a small group of friends. Soon, the email distribution grew, as friends of friends asked to be added. Then, online spots like Glide Magazine and Liner Notes music blog started carrying my projects. In 2017, I launched an Instagram account, which to my amazement, has grown to 13,000+ followers!

This year marks the 10-year anniversary of 31 Days of Dead. Naturally, I felt compelled to do something special to celebrate the occasion. As with past years, the brainstorming sessions began in August. By the end of September, I was putting the final touches on my picks and getting ready to do the accompanying write-ups when the sad news broke about Robert Hunter’s passing. That changed everything. I had no choice but to start over and dedicate this year’s project to Hunter. And then panic set in as I contemplated the daunting task of adequately representing the work of one of the most prolific songwriters of our time.

The online memorials and memories that quickly surfaced after Hunter’s death confirmed just how daunting my job was. Mickey Hart told a story about when his son asked him, “Who is Robert Hunter?” Hart’s response: “Look around you — he’s everywhere. He spun the greatest stories and songs and images that could ever be.”

And then there was Trey Anastasio of Phish, who very eloquently captured the feelings from a fan’s perspective: “Some of the most beautiful memories of my youth are of standing at concerts listening to Jerry sing Robert Hunter’s lyrics. The combination of those lyrics, always from the point of view of the outsider, the broken, the confused, the outlaw, the dying, the man on the street, and Jerry’s aching vulnerable voice, full of pain and spirit, was indescribable.”

There is not too much that I can add to what has already been said about the great lyricist/poet, Robert Burns Hunter and his vital importance to the Grateful Dead. He was a reclusive man of very few words who eschewed the limelight and preferred to simply let his poetry speak for itself. In the same spirit, I will use this year’s project as a platform to speak through the music in which his lyrics were written.

Since the focus of this year’s project is on Robert Hunter, things will naturally be a little different from previous years. First, I packed this project with as many Hunter compositions as I could, but there is no possible way that I could include everything, so I apologize if I missed one of your favorites. Along those lines, you should expect my playlist to be heavy with Garcia tunes simply because Garcia collaborated with Hunter the most. My apologies to fans of Bobby, Brent, and Pigpen who might feel a little short-changed. Also, I provided a link to the “Greatest Stories Ever Told” from dead.net for each of my selections to help give texture to Hunter’s lyrics.

As I have done in the past, this year’s project recognizes important milestones and anniversaries such as the release of the albums Aoxomoxoa and Live Dead, the departure of the Godchaux, and the addition of Brent Mydland. For the first time ever, I included some repeats from previous years. I did this as a nod to the 10-year anniversary of the 31 Days of Dead. Think of them as the equivalent of my “greatest hits.”

I provide download links for all of my projects. Consequently, I do not pick any official releases to avoid copyright issues. Usually, I try to achieve a broad, cross-representation of years, styles, and eras. This has become very challenging because the available material has been severely depleted by all of the official releases since I began these projects. Box sets such as Europe ’72, May ’77, and Spring ’90 have removed entire tours from what I could use for my projects. That makes my job harder, but I embrace the challenge.

Finally, unlike the “Official 30 Days of Dead,” there is no contest here. Instead, the prize is the music, and the winner is the listener.

December 1 One Afternoon Long Ago: The Magical Three

Ripple, Brokedown Palace, To Lay Me Down

9/20/70 – Fillmore East • New York, NY; Acoustic Set

Robert Hunter was notoriously prolific. Sometimes, songs would just pour out of him, like the day he wrote “Ripple,” “Brokedown Palace,” and “To Lay Me Down” in one session. Talk about inspiration (we will visit “Terrapin” later in this project), Hunter’s liner notes for the Garcia All Good Things box set elaborate a bit more on the circumstances of that magical afternoon:

“I found myself left alone in Alan Trists’s flat on Devonshire Terrace in West Kensington, with a supply of very nice thick linen paper, sun shining brightly through the window, a bottle of Greek Retsina wine at my elbow. The songs flowed like molten gold onto the page and stand as written.”

Hunter told Rolling Stone that his favorite line he ever wrote was in “Ripple” – “Let it be known there is a fountain that was not made by the hands of men.” Therefore, it only seems appropriate that we start this year’s project with that song. The lyrics and musical composition of all three of the songs written on that afternoon in London are among my very favorite in the entire Grateful Dead catalog.

The versions I selected to represent “The Magical Three” are from the Fillmore East on September 20, 1970, which is widely considered to be one of the finest acoustic sets the band ever played. The lovely three-part vocal harmonies along with the accompanying piano and mandolin make this a truly special treat to behold.

New App for Show Tickets Draws Whippersnappers to Broadway Author: Davey Alba

Say you’re planning an nice night out on the town this week. Naturally—because we live in a mobile-obsessed age—you turn to the arsenal of apps on your phone for ideas. Fandango: “Maybe I’ll watch a movie.” OpenTable: “Or make a reservation at a fancy restaurant.” Uber: “I’ll definitely take a car to get there, since I’m treating myself.”

Would you think of going to the theater? Probably not, and that’s precisely what Brian Fenty is on a mission to change. As the chairman and cofounder of TodayTix, which makes an eponymous mobile app that sells “week-of” theater tickets, Fenty wants to raise the profile of Broadway to a level of awareness that makes it top-of-mind as an option for last-minute entertainment among even the most oblivious millennials.

There’s certainly a market opportunity. The global theater industry generates tens of billions of dollars in revenue each year. That puts theater in comparable territory to the global film industry, which according to the MPAA made $36.4 billion in revenue in 2014. Yet approximately twenty percent of tickets go unsold on Broadway, and about thirty percent go unsold in London’s West End, TodayTix says.

Fenty, who has deep ties to the professional arts world, including working as one of Broadway’s youngest producers when he was 23, has some ideas about why so many tickets are left on the table: an aging audience, high ticketing fees, and basically no big technological innovations to speak of. So in 2013, he and Merritt Baer, a friend and another Broadway enthusiast, got together and created TodayTix.

“What we’re trying to do is be the theater app for the everyman,” Fenty tells WIRED. “If TodayTix can bring theater to a broader demographic, then we’re accomplishing our goals.”

On Broadway

A year-and-a-half after TodayTix’s launch in New York, Fenty says theatergoers buy one ticket per minute on the company’s app. It has 425,000 users, he says, and offers more than forty Broadway and Off-Broadway shows in the Big Apple. Today, after a period of beta testing in London, the company is officially expanding into the famous West End theater district with tickets to more than forty West End shows at launch. Fenty says TodayTix’s goal is to move into additional US cities by the end of 2015, including Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington, DC.

It’s a smart gamble. In 2013, the Broadway League—the national trade association for the Broadway theater industry in New York—released a report that found mobile ticket purchases made up less than 1 percent of tickets sold on Broadway during the 2012-2013 season.

Meanwhile, mobile commerce is steadily on the rise as the smartphone becomes central to so many of our interactions in the outside world. In a new report, research outfit eMarketer estimates mobile commerce sales will near $77 billion in 2015, up 32.2 percent from 2014. And that number is projected to keep growing.

Bringing In New Audiences

The decision to make TodayTix a mobile-first app ties in with Fenty’s aim to bring more bodies—especially a younger audience—into the theater. “You go into a show, and you see the gray hair and everything else,” Fenty says. “The theater hasn’t been this mainstream cultural option.”

Fenty thinks a huge part of why theater hasn’t been attracting these audiences is the complicated ticketing process. Right now, there are a slew of sites that purport to sell discounted tickets but, Fenty says they can be confusing. It’s hard to tell if you’re getting a broker who’s charing you a high markup.

You could get a ticket directly from the box office, but that means already knowing what you want to see.

Closest to TodayTix’s model is TKTS—the famed last-minute ticket booths in Times Square and elsewhere in New York—which Fenty calls “a great institution.”

“But you have to stand in the line in the sun, rain, or cold to get your tickets,” he says.

Skewing Young

According to the Broadway League, 40 percent of all theater tickets were purchased within the week of the show date in 2014, which made “week-of” a no-brainer for the TodayTix team. And they say it’s catching on. The company says its average customer age is 32—twelve years younger than the average Broadway-goer. And these younger audiences are going to more shows, TodayTix says: its average customer is seeing six shows in a year, compared to the overall Broadway average of four shows.

“Theater is one of those amazing things where everything is immediate,” he says.

“The whole concept that when you see a show, an actor can forget a line, a costume could malfunction and the audience is different every night … there are few things in our world that you can engage with at that level.”

Today, May 18th, is apparently International Museum Day, organized by the International Council of Museums (ICOM)  and Art Museum Day, organized by the Association of Art Museum Directors. I (Michael) had never heard of either of these designations until this year. Museums worldwide will be offering free or reduced admission, and here in the USA, many are using the day as a rallying cry to save museum and arts funding from the conservatives. [Hyperallergic]

I’m unclear on why exactly Cabinet Gallery was invited to build their new, extremely ugly brick-and-mortar location (financed by including luxury residential units above the gallery) inside Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, a public park in London. I suppose it’s a public benefit that they included an artist residency, but this seems like an inappropriate (and mostly ugly) use of public land set aside for green space. There are plenty of examples of creatively-massed architecture that creates street-facing retail spaces while actually improving the public space it backs on to (the recent Lincoln Center plaza overhaul, for example). Hmm. The first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery is here and it’s not very promising. The production quality looks like a low budget flick on the SyFy network and I suspect I’m not alone in prequels-nobody-asked-for fatigue. (When can we get a new post-DS9 movie or series?)
