The Full Story Behind Shawn Mendes’s Brand-New Tour Wardrobe
by CHRISTIAN ALLAIRE
Last week, Shawn Mendes kicked off his North American summer tour in Portland, Oregon. For this new slew of performance dates, Mendes’s longtime stylist, Tiffany Briseno, worked with the Canadian singer-songwriter to revamp his rocker look. Briseno first started with Mendes in 2015 for his “Stitches” music video. “Having been with him since he was 16, his style has evolved through a few stages since then,” she says. “At first he had a stage when he’d really just wear what he wanted, which I’d call the ‘plaid stage,’ then we elevated his style a bit when he started wearing leather jackets and black jeans. Now, I’d say we have moved onto what I’d call the ‘natural rockstar’ stage.”
For this brand-new tour, Briseno and Mendes switched things up with subtle details. “The approach for tour is much more raw and lived-in compared to some of our past award shows and other performance looks,” she says. “We have also integrated the idea of de-layering throughout the entire show. Starting with a lightweight jacket and ending in a cut-off tee or staple tank top. This approach was inspired by icons like James Brown and the use of his cape—the idea of using clothing to create more anticipation for the audience.”
Taking that in mind, the pair landed on a classic rock-and-roll look that was casual, but super bold and confident. “The goal is for Shawn to make his mark in a world of past and present style icons,” Briseno says. “Taking inspiration and paying homage to some of the greats such as Elvis, Bruce Springsteen, and Jimi Hendrix.” They also made references to film characters, from classics such as The Outsiders to the Teddy Boy aesthetic found in films such as Grease.
Briseno also worked with brands to design custom looks for Mendes, including pieces from Calvin Klein, The Kooples, Paul Smith, Tommy Hilfiger, Dzojchen, Dsquared2, and Saint Laurent. “We curated everything from shapes, design details, and fabric choices to solidify Shawn’s iconic style,” she says. They also incorporated some vintage pieces into the mix to give it a more eclectic feel. “We love mixing a great vintage find with a higher-end, more tailored piece,” Briseno says. “Key items like jackets, worn-in tees, and accessories like textured belts that channel the past decades of rock and roll.”
While the focus was indeed on aesthetics, Briseno had to weigh the practicality and comfort of each piece, ensuring they worked with Mendes’s movements on stage. “In our design meetings we experimented with fabrics that would retain shape, but have the flexibility and breathability that we were after,” she says. “The weight of the clothing and the way it moves on stage was key. Also, choosing a palette that would compliment the stage design and pop against the lighting was very important.”
At the end of the day, though, Briseno’s number-one priority was simply making sure Mendes felt good in the clothes—and pushing him to try new things along the way. “He has to feel good in it,” she says. “Having worked together for so long now, we have a trust that allows us to push and evolve. He is open and knows what he likes, so it makes for a very successful creative process in our fitting sessions.”

THE BEST-DRESSED MEN IN 2021
You really can not call this year's menswear a snoozer, could you? Looking back, it was undoubtedly one of the most varied, colorful, and expressive periods we've had in a long time. Clothes were once again enjoyable. Men's fashion was erratic and inconsistent. People relinquish control. Men gained self-assurance. Slim-fit minimalism has been pushed out.
For the typical guy, it all boils down to this: choices. There are more of them than we've seen in a long time. This might be the fascinating period in men's fashion history, if not all time. And in a year in which most changes were off, these 25 best-dressed guys. They were there to show us how it's done! Whether they were setting trends, breaking the rules, or sticking to the classics. Their message was clear: wear whatever the heck you want, and do it with a grin on your face.
ZAC EFRON
Zac Efron's hair had almost as much of a year as he did. Efron grabbed our attention even before his portrayal as serial murderer Ted Bundy had everyone talking when he wore a bright white bleach at the start of the year. You can afford to bring liberties with your design aesthetic when you're this ridiculously good-looking, but what we appreciate about Efron's style is that it's not at all try-hard. Zac Efron leather jacket, shearling coats, and slim-fit two-pieces are among his favorites. There's a lot of innovation in menswear right now, which is fantastic, but here's a reminder that the old ones are still the best for a lot of people.
RAMI MALEK
Oscar-winner, Bond villain, is a fashion icon. Being Rami Malek must be a nightmare. Malek's wardrobe is a lot more refined off-screen than it was in his debut role in Mr. Robot when he wore hoodies. He pairs inch-perfect tailoring with a few dramatic details that wouldn't be out of place in Mick Jagger's stage outfit. Consider patterned shirts or a velvet blazer on rare occasions.
There's a certain degree of swagger here, but it's possible that some of his self-assurance comes from the fact that he anchors whatever he wears with essentials like black tailored pants. And there's the fact that he's Rami Malek.
BRAD PITT
The funny thing is, Tyler Durden has a lot more style than Brad Pitt. Pitt is a fashion icon, but when he's not dressed up in a tuxedo, he's casual and - how should we describe it? – artistically untidy. It works because a) he's unquestionably attractive, and b) his several fashionable roles contribute to his megawatt character.
Despite this, he looked fantastic this year, both on and off the screen. Quentin Tarantino donned a lot of 60s and 70s clothes in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, including double denim, vintage T-shirts, leather jackets, and Hawaiian shirts.
DAVID BECKHAM
After minor hitches in the noughties, David Beckham has fully matured into a veteran master of menswear in this decade, and 2019 was a monument to Goldenballs' constancy, with (to our knowledge) not a single foot out of place.
We've had an unending list of complimenting haircuts and the occasional addition to Mr. Beckham's already large collection of tattoos, and he's come out smelling like a rose. For us, Beckham was at his best at Wimbledon this year, and it's no exaggeration to suggest that the rest of the crowd particularly in comparison. But, as he usually does, he shone in smarter casuals like suede bombers and Dior's boundary-pushing tailoring. He hasn't lost it yet.
SHAWN MENDES
What had you accomplished by the age of 23? Shawn Mendes, a singer-songwriter, has three US number-one albums under his belt by the age of 25, all while developing a flawless modern rock and roll style that pays homage to the past while being contemporary.
His forte is slim-fitting monochrome tailoring, which he finishes with a pair of Chelsea boots and rock star bling. His favorite brands are Parisian labels Saint Laurent and The Kooples. Both of which have the slim-fitting monochrome style that has turned the squeaky clean pop idol into one of menswear's classiest figures.

Recently, Ive been looking at brands that I like and how they present themselves in order to improve my own presentation skills. I feel like my work relies heavily on an aesthetic/vibe and I really want to carry this through into my technical drawings, photography and illustrations. I love how fashion orientated and styled these photographs are, and that The Kooples also take beautiful detailed pictures of their garments on white backgrounds.

Kristin Gallegos is a Photographer and Creative Director based in Los Angeles
In late 2014, Kristin decided to pick up photography as a hobby and began shooting her friends as muses.  That hobby very quickly developed into another career as a photographer.  Brands and magazines began commissioning her.  The 60’s and 70’s heavily influence her work.  Her very specific retro aesthetic translates from her work as a makeup artist into her photography where she not only shoots the subject but also does the makeup, hair, styling, and creative direction.
Her work can be seen in Playboy, Teen Vogue, Purple.fr, Nylon, Foxes, Cake, Galore, Sticks and Stones Agency, Reserved, Nakid and So It Goes Magazines.  And for companies like Volcom, J Brand, Thrills, Valfre, The Kooples, Jill Stuart, The Elderstatesman, Everyday Hero Shoes, Thin Wild Mercury Fragrances, Samantha Pleet, and Stoned Immaculate to name a few.
