Tokoyami x reader- Big city, small pond
Fluff + Nature took back the earth AU combined with fantasy AU
You didn't take a breath before sinking back down from the side of the moss overrun pavement into the flooded road, deepened after many years of abrasion and sinkholes popping open intermittently. Deep enough for anything to swim in at least, though clementine traffic cone's still floated and drain covers for manholes had rusted and chipped away at the side. Litter still filled the bottom of the sinkhole but had all seemed to collect in the deep abysses. Metal benches were still bolted to the floor but had new river weeds and algae wrapped around each section of the skeleton but it was a wonderful place for anything to sit.
Your gills split open on your neck and you walked the depths of the "river" the reflection of miraculously working street signs for takeaways that greedy humans reopened over and over no matter how many times mother nature reclaimed the earth. Your finger's brushed the scales of an orange carp darting past you and you kicked your leg's out, turning them to an iridescent (f/c) fishtail, ending and transforming to human at the hips, your skirt clung to the tail under the water and your flowy t-shirt billowed out when you moved sharply, turning a corner or halting quickly to watch something.
Your tail kicked up rocks and dust which swirled in the water and settled at the bottom again as sediment. You scoffed at a human dropping a paper wrapper into the water that turned too much and landed on the floor, a few balls of red and white paper landing on your arm then tumbling off.
You popped your head up feeling a lily pad drooping down over your hair and covering your right eye. "Hey!" you shouted but the human was on his knees looking into the water in annoyance "Excuse me! I don't appreciate your wrapper dissolving in my river!" you shouted and he lifted his head, ruby eyes fluttered to you pulling the lily pad off your head, flopping it back onto the water where it drifted further away.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to drop it, I was trying to find it now" he sighed in annoyance at the knowledge it was gone. He sat cross legged at the side and tilted his head looking at you. "Mermaid?" it was definitely supposed to be a question but it sounded more like a surprise than curiosity. You rolled your eyes and repeated his word in a mocking tone "oh mermaid? No. I'm not a mermaid, I'm a nymph obviously. How would you like it if i just assumed you were a crow!" you crossed your arms, your tail fins swishing back and forth impatiently. "I suppose I'd be most irritated" he scratched the back of his neck and hung his head.
You sighed swimming closer to the edge and rested your forearms on the kerb next to him. "It's whatever. Not like you city folk would know a difference anyway. Mother nature did all she could to reclaim the earth as hers and you still poison us with your plastic and oil and deforestation" you listed the minimum amount of things humans had done yet it was still enough for him to feel a guilty punch to the gut. "I'm sorry for what my species did to the earth" he spoke on behalf of a race that didn't care. The human race. But it was nice to hear an apology for once instead of someone claiming it wasn't their fault.
"My name is tokoyami fumikage" he held out his hand and you took it, the web's between your fingers stretching out slightly and you analyse him curiously "(y/n) macdonald." he nodded and smiled at you politely "You have a very nice tail" he said unsure how to continue your conversation, it wasn't like he could just ask you to get up and join him for a dinner and get to know you, though honestly he wasn't sure how nymphs worked, for all he know maybe you could? "Thank you. It's my favourite colour!" you grinned swishing it behind you and hopping on the edge on the path with all your strength.
You kicked your tail out and they transformed into legs dipping into the water and creating ripples around your calves and he stared amazed at your split appendages, skirt still hugging your thighs nicely and your t-shirt stuck to you like a puppy with abandonment issues.
"The difference by the way. This is the difference between mermaids and nymphs. Mermaids are usually really rude too" you explained, picking a string of riverweed from your leg and flinging it into the water to drift along the shore or sink to the bottom. He hummed in response since he couldn't agree or disagree, for now he would stay a neutral party unwilling to get on your bad side again. "I see. How did you end up here anyway aren't nymphs supposed to be out in like... rivers and lakes?" he queried and you sighed looking at the murky water sadly, missing the feel of your own river. "Uh, when mother nature decided to shift stuff around and the big tsunami flood thingy came it flooded my river and we all ended up somewhere different. Maybe it was on purpose but I ended up here" you swung your legs in the water tapping the stone ground with your fingers.
You missed the smell of earth surrounding your crystalline lake running off into smaller streams and your favourite river for finding pebbles in. you missed the fluffy flax seed that stuck to you when you were drying off in the long grass by the bank and that floated on top of the water for fish to pop up and suction down into their stomach. You missed your friends mostly, almost sisterly bonds between all of you now severed and spread across all of japan.
"I miss home really. For all I know my friends could be home waiting for me" you exhaled deeply and tokoyami sadly glanced at you wondering how far your legs could take you. "What if I helped you get home?" he asked and you jumped excitedly. "You would really help me! Don't you have school or friends or anything? Are you sure you can help?!" you blabbered for a minute or so about how inconvenient it would be and how you didn't know how far you would have to go until he stopped you. "My school is on break right now so I have about 2 months off before I need to go back. Most of my friends are going to look for a cause of the reclamation too since half our school is unusable since it started so I have no qualms helping you"
You jumped up and down giddy and dove back in the water splashing him with water that rolled off his feathers, soaking the choker on his neck and you apologised. "I'm just so excited to go home! Thank you so much!"
And so began your long journey to your home. You passed hundreds of abandoned buildings crumbling to nothing with vines twisted up the sides and supersized branches through the shattered windows, ivy had crawled up the walls of every structure you passed and you talked aimlessly along the way. "So mother nature is-" "a goddess inside the earth" tokoyami nodded at your explanation and looked around in understanding. One of her creations had destroyed the other, the necessary one, and she was proving that humans were expendable. "I'd be pissed too if my home was being filled with gross plastic." you giggled and smiled thankful that someone finally took you as sane, you were tired of truth seekers who didn't like the truth they gave them. They had too much blame on them so they went to find something else.
A month flew by quickly, you spent as much time swimming along streams that you could but of course not every path was filled with water, so it was a long journey for someone who wasn't used to walking barefoot on the actual ground for huge periods of time.
"What are your friends like?" Tokoyami asked, pushing a bish out the way for you to crouch through and you hummed, "caring. They care about a lot of things like climate change, obviously, but also silly stuff like um the best wood to carve you and your significant other's name in, or which leaves are the shiniest at golden hour. We have to make up fun little games or we'd just get bored" you smiled and he chuckled. They sounded similar to you, pointing out tiny details on your quest like spiderwebs covered in dew hidden in the grass, or perfectly round stone's that were shiny in the sun, it made sense you wanted to get back to them so badly.
The trees opened up to an empty circle of grass and a circle not much smaller of water, flowing over the sides of the bowl into the grass and streams wound along into their own segments of the forest. "Home... i'm home! I'm home i'm home i'm home!" you cried jumping up and down and sprinting into the gorgeous blue water and immediately your legs changed to your (f/c) tail, glowing in the sun as you floated on your back and soaked up the water. "Come in come in!!" you shouted while waving at tokoyami.
You had taken rest stops at old hotels and decrepit houses to check for water and of course food and sleep but there was enough civilization along the way to keep you going. But tokoyami hadn't had a bath, a real bath, one he didn't have to fill with a showerhead, in a month and god he wanted to relax desperately.
He peeled off his sticky t-shirt and hung it over a tree branch dipping into the water and relaxing immediately. "This is surprisingly warm" he muttered watching you splash around joyfully and sunk under the water. It was so clean he could keep his eyes open and watch you dip in and out of the water bouncing like a dolphin.
You swam over to him and he sat back up shaking the water out of his feathers and you smiled hugging him tightly "thank you for taking me here. I wish I could help you get back home but I don't think i'd make it back here myself. You sighed and he shook his head. "It's okay, I have other ways of getting home. I don't have to leave right now. I'll stay for another fortnight but then I probably have to go" he looked at his phone glad he had data and could contact hawks at the click of a button.
In 14 days that went by like rapids over rocks tokoyami had to say goodbye and hawks picked him up from your spot on the way back from a mission. 2 of your friends had also found their way home so you weren't lonely and tokoyami had promised to visit. "Okay and be safe home okay! I hope I see you soon!" you shouted as hawks lifted him into the air and he nodded in a silent agreement and waved.
"See you soon (y/n)!" he shouted back and you jumped in a wave as they disappeared into the bright blue sky reflected in your lake.
"Sooo..." one of your sisters sidled up next to you and you blushed "don't even! I know what you're going to say" you shoved her away and she laughed at you teasintly.
"Soo..." hawks started and tokoyami rolled his eye's "no hawks"

8-years-old
"Lloyd! The water's here!" Colette called out, setting down the heavy bucket filled with water next to Lloyd. Mission accomplished, and without a single hitch! Mostly. She wasn't going to mention how she nearly spilt all of the water when another girl's arm missed her by a hair's width. Or how her heart was still pounding from the close call. "We can get started with the sandcastle now." Lloyd was so occupied pushing sand into one giant pile that he hadn't even noticed her approach.
Having finally gotten his attention, Lloyd stared at her blankly for a few seconds before seeming to come to his senses. Scrambling to his feet, he began to shovel the pile of sand into the bucket. Overhead, a seagull's cry rent the air, barely audible over the screaming of all the children and adults on the beach that was packed to the brim, the two vastly different in tone. "Thanks, Colette! We might need another bucket of water, though. I don't think this is enough."
"Oh, I can -"
"Nah, I'll get the next one. It would only be fair!" Lloyd grinned a toothy smile at her, prominently displaying the gap from the baby tooth that had merrily vacated his mouth last week. She herself currently had a loose tooth that she absent-mindedly pushed at with her tongue, until she pushed too hard and caused a slight stab of pain. It would likely fall out soon.
"Come on, then! This sandcastle won't build itself alone!" Lloyd said, grabbing her hand with his, rough with the individual granules of sand sticking to it.
Colette giggled and joined him, attempting to lift some of the wet sand from the bucket to start making the base of their castle - only to find that the sand seemed to have solidified into one giant clump that refused to budge from its snug home. Every attempt to separate a tiny handful yielded a sucking sound that seemed to make the sand stick together even more, ever more determined to stay with their granular siblings. With a final huff, she put all her strength behind her arms - only to flop back down onto the beach with nothing in her hands.
"That's - hard!" Lloyd grunted, faced with a similar predicament and having no choice but to give up. The sand would remain in the bucket for the foreseeable future, it seemed. He wiped his hands on his red swimming trunks before offering it to Colette, helping her back up.
"Didn't think the sand would stick together this much," Colette muttered. This was why her father had advised them not to use a bucket, huh? She stole a glance towards the collection of colourful beach umbrellas that was close by, where their parents were taking shelter from the sun. They were sitting on the same striped picnic blanket where breakfast had occurred earlier, having a relaxed conversation over cans of lemonade while keeping a watchful eye on the two of them. Noishe was there too, taking a morning nap by the blanket.
Spotting Colette, her father waved cheerily, before taking another chug from his can.
She and Lloyd had been so excited to finally visit the beach during the March Holidays. They'd been jumping up and down on the car seats, sticking their noses into the window, and chattering non-stop on the journey here, giving Noishe, curled up on Lloyd's lap, no peace to sleep in. Her father, who had been sitting with them in the backseat, had just watched with an exasperated smile, having given up on asking them to calm down when his pleas had fallen on deaf ears.
The two of them would finally get to see the breathtaking ocean they had witnessed multiple times when watching The Little Mermaid, their favourite movie to watch together. Lloyd loved the vibrant ocean and the possibility of an entire unexplored world full of magic under the waves. She liked the colours and the cute designs, and the absolutely beautiful story of true love overcoming all. They’d watched it one time too many, until Flounder and Sebastian easily visited her in her dreams.
Aunt Anna had made clear upon their arrival her two conditions for letting them in the ocean. Firstly, that an adult had to accompany them at all times. Understandable, given the terrifying power of the ocean with its roiling waves, that had only been impressed on her upon actually seeing it with her own eyes. Secondly, and expectedly, that they had to wait an hour after breakfast, the familiar argument of "You have to digest all those cheese sandwiches!" leaving Aunt Anna's mouth.
They might as well make the most of the one hour, so Colette had suggested building a sandcastle to pass the time. It was one of the activities that she thought was a must-do for a first-time beach trip. After all, where else were they going to find all the sand they needed?
Lloyd had happily agreed. She was glad to see him finally perk up after wilting a little at the reminder that he needed to wait - days were much better when they were both smiling, and it wouldn't do for Lloyd to spend his first time at the beach with a frown on his face. So they'd dug up the shovels and the buckets from the car's trunk and set out to make the best sandcastle ever, one that reached the sky! They weren't going to let their lack of experience hinder them!
Perhaps that goal was a tad too ambitious. But that sure wouldn't stop her from trying!
Having made zero progress in getting the sand out of the bucket, Lloyd resorted to upending the bucket and slamming on the bottom with his hands until the sand all came out in a single bucket-shaped mound. Colette spared a worried glance at the plastic bucket, which had let out a groan. She had no clue how sturdy it was. Hopefully, it wouldn't break.
"Come on, Colette, let's do this!"
"Yeah!"
Lloyd knelt to start tamping the sand into shape, and Colette joined him.
"Could you pass the shovel?"
"We're out of water again!"
"How about we try doing this?"
Those were the only words that left their mouths as they worked together, their hands brushing. There was also the occasional peal of laughter that slipped out of either of them at something funny the other had done. Otherwise, they were in perfect sync, without the need to talk. They could just adapt to the other's actions. She remained focussed on her task, tuning out the sounds of life around her and getting her hands covered in sand, until there was even sand under her nails.
The sun continued to get higher on its arc, its rays falling on all the bare skin revealed by her navy blue one-piece swimsuit. It felt like she was roasting alive. Sweat ran down the sides of her face and her throat was dry. A can of cold lemonade sounded really nice now. She was glad, at least, that their parents had insisted they put on sunscreen, and had helped slather the two of them in it from head to toe, Lloyd squirming the whole time. If not for that, she would surely have an excruciating sunburn by now. From what she'd seen of her classmates who had returned from last year's March Holidays with red and peeling skin, she was glad to avoid it.
They made steady progress, bar the few close calls where she nearly flung the shovel into the sandcastle. It slowly took shape with a few more water-gathering trips and repeats of the not very effective bucket-slamming tactic, until finally, it was complete. Even the bucket had survived all the abuse! Colette sat back on her haunches to observe their handiwork, a smile lighting up her face.
Their masterpiece.
Okay, it wasn't a masterpiece. It was nowhere near perfect, or even amazing.
A messy tower stood before her eyes, tapering from a wide base to a thin top. It was tiny at thirty centimetres high. From the middle onwards, the tower slanted to the side, a result of Lloyd pushing just a bit too hard. It resembled the Leaning Tower of Pizza now, but, just like that mysterious tower, their tower was still standing through some unknown magic. Using a random stick he’d picked up off the sand, Lloyd had etched a smiley face with wobbly lines into the side of the tower. He'd stuck the stick into the top to act as a flag, exclaiming that the Disney castle had a flag on top of the main building, so theirs would too! She'd also dug a trench, in which Lloyd had poured the extra seawater remaining in the bucket to create a moat. Now no villain could mount a successful attack on their castle! Not even the Goombas or turtles they stomped every weekend in Super Mario Brothers.
The moat had dried up in seconds as the surrounding sand had absorbed the water, but it was the effort that counted. And it looked cool for a while!
Their castle was pretty average compared to the other ones she could see on the beach, and most definitely was nothing compared to the grand, detailed designs she had seen that one time on TV. But she had fun building it, and it was something she'd made together with Lloyd, so it was worth being proud over. That was all that mattered.
It was nice to imagine their castle standing here for all eternity, even if she knew it wouldn't last once they left. She and Lloyd's castle, powerful and durable, even against the worst of enemies!
"Looks good!" A hand landed on her head, prompting Colette to look up and see Aunt Anna waving a polaroid camera around. She could see her reflection, wide-eyed and smiling, in the sunglasses resting on the bridge of Aunt Anna’s nose. Aunt Anna must really love that pair of sunglasses; she always wore them whenever she was driving her and Lloyd to school in the mornings. To protect her eyes from the sun, and to look stylish while doing so? Who knew.
Aunt Anna had put on a giant sunhat, the brim so wide that it cast a shadow over Colette's face. "Come on, let me take a picture of you two with the sandcastle!" Aunt Anna said, raising the polaroid camera to her eye and miming clicking the button.
After a bunch of poking and prodding from Aunt Anna to get them into the best position, with loud protests from Lloyd’s end, they were finally ready to have their photo taken. For the sandcastle to actually show up in the picture, they had to stand behind it. Lloyd looped his arm around her shoulder, while she gave Lloyd bunny ears with her fingers. She would never give up the opportunity to do so. "Say cheese!" Aunt Anna yelled, raising the polaroid camera with a massive smile and clicking the button, the camera emitting a flash of light that blinded Colette for an instant.
"Can I move now, Mom? And can we finally go swimming? Pleaseeeeee?" Lloyd whined, plopping back down onto the sand before he even received his answer. Colette blinked rapidly, still trying to get rid of the spots in her vision.
"Oh, the pictures are gonna turn out sooooo cute," Aunt Anna muttered, retrieving the printed-out polaroid from the camera and beginning to shake it, waiting for it to develop. She glanced at Lloyd, sulking in the sand, and gave him the thumbs-up. Lloyd perked up immediately and scrambled to his feet to run off, only to stop in his tracks after hearing Aunt Anna's next words. "Wait a moment, would you? Your father is gonna follow you and he's still coming over."
"Dad! Hurry up!" Lloyd yelled, impatiently hopping from one leg to the other as Uncle Kratos leisurely walked over. Noishe, having finally caught up on his beauty sleep, ran over too, barking in excitement. Colette giggled, crouching down and reaching her hand out for Noishe to bump his snout against with every round he made around Lloyd's legs. Would Noishe be joining them in the ocean? It was against the rules to bring dogs into the swimming pool, but there was no such rule here. Maybe Noishe secretly liked water! There was no better chance to find out!
And the more the merrier!
"No going further than the bobbing spheres, okay? And stay close to your father!"
"I know, Mom! I know! You told me this three times already!"
"Just checking," Anna replied cheerfully, ruffling Lloyd's hair and prompting a scowl to pop onto Lloyd’s face.
"You got it too, right?" Her father asked her, having come up behind her.
"Yes, Dad!" Colette replied, getting to her feet and preparing to run down to the ocean. "I promise I'll -"
Unfortunately, Colette didn’t get to finish her sentence. One small step forward and her foot caught instantly against the spare shovel still sticking up in the sand, which had completely escaped her notice. Everyone, even Noishe, stopped what they were doing. All three adults stretched out their arms in a desperate attempt to stop her fall, but they were too far away to have any hope of catching her. Flailing her arms, she fell, the world seeming to go by in slow motion as the tower of golden sand became increasingly larger in her vision.
Until she crashed right through the tower she and Lloyd had spent the last hour crafting, in her unstoppable path to face-planting on the beach. Her hand felt the roughness of tightly-packed sand as that sand exploded in every direction. Closing her eyes against the rain of sand, she threw her arms out to cushion her fall, finally landing on the sand.
The action now over, Colette pushed herself into a sitting position, wincing. No visible wounds anywhere. No blood. No lasting pain. At least the sand was somewhat soft.
Oh no… Heart sinking in her chest, she stared at the mess that had once been a glorious sandcastle, now just a sad misshapen mound of sand. The top of the tower had been scattered everywhere.
She could feel everyone’s eyes on her, an awkward silence arising even as noise continued to surround them. She'd ruined everything with her clumsiness again... She wanted to hide, but there was nowhere to hide out here in the open. Maybe she could dig a hole in the sand and hide forever...
"Colette! Are you alright?" Lloyd’s voice broke the silence, a helping hand offered to her as he stared down in concern.
"Yeah." She took his hand, using her other to try brushing off the grains of sand now sticking to her whole body. There was so much... She'd never get all of it off. She opened her mouth, ready to apologise.
“Come on, there’s no time!” Lloyd interrupted before she could even say anything, tugging on her hand as he had done before. She was being pulled in the direction of the waves, stumbling a little in surprise at the sudden movement. “Our castle was attacked by enemies, and they’ve fled to the water! We need to pursue them! Right?”
Lloyd winked at her, a huge grin on his face. She could read the message in his actions loud and clear: there was no need to apologise. Just get back to the fun!
“Right!” She replied, wiping the hesitance from her expression and replacing it with a smile, worries already forgotten. The ocean would be one solution to all the sand stuck to her skin!
“Race you!” Lloyd yelled, letting go of her hand and abruptly taking off. She cried out indignantly in response, chasing after him as fast as she could, Noishe following hot on their heels with his tongue lolling out of his mouth, ears flapping up and down. Their yells about being first to get in the ocean reached Kratos’ ears, who simply sighed at their familiar antics.
~~~
“Here,” Lloyd said, pressing something small into her palm. He and Colette were both drenched from head to toe from all the swimming and water wars that had occurred. The tips of her hair brushed her shoulders, leaving tiny trails of water behind and causing water droplets to slide down her arms. Not even Noishe had been spared, shaking his matted fur furiously. The water had been colder than she'd expected, but all the running around had helped to combat it. In fact, she was exhausted from all the activity, the smile on her face so wide her cheeks hurt and her throat hoarse from all the screaming and laughter.
Now that they were on dry ground again, they were standing by the picnic blanket, waiting for their parents to return with towels. Whereafter their parents would hold the familiar ritual of smothering them with towels, squeezing each strand of hair dry.
In her hand was a seashell, rough against her skin - not the stereotypical blue ones that were always on the pages of the Chinese textbook whenever the ocean was mentioned, with its fan shape and equally-spaced out ridges - but rather an off-white colour, fantastically curved with little spikes sticking out of it to form a geometric pattern. It had a gaping opening that revealed its pink insides.
“Dad said it's called a conch shell,” Lloyd explained. “Snails hide in them, but this one is empty. I found it just now!”
“Oh, it’s so pretty! I haven’t been able to find any...” She’d been scouring the beach to no success. The most she’d spotted among the sand were tiny fragments of what had once been seashells, smashed to smithereens by the wrath of the ocean.
“Put it against your ear! I tried it, and it really works!”
“The sound of the ocean...?”
Colette lifted the conch shell, aligning the hole with her ear and closing her eyes to listen closely, covering her other ear with her hand. She and Lloyd had read about this many times before - how a shell contained the entire ocean within it.
And it did. It was a strange, mysterious sound - like there was water within the small shell lapping against its walls, somehow, even though that wasn’t the case, for any water would have leaked out of the opening by now. It was almost like she herself was surrounded by the ocean, as the shell in her hand must have been as it was carried by the currents to stop on this beach. What a lonely journey that must have been, alone in the deep darkness.
She opened her eyes to see Lloyd’s smiling face, his hand gently pulling hers away from her ears.
“Did you hear it?”
“Yeah. That was incredible...”
“Well, the shell is for you.” Lloyd gestured, grinning.
“Oh, really?” She gasped. “No, you found it, so it should be yours!”
Colette tried to pass it back to Lloyd, but he refused. He only closed her fingers around the shell with his hand before hopping just out of arm's reach. Infuriating.
“Nah, it’s fine! Keep it! I insist!”
Colette pouted, knowing Lloyd wouldn’t budge on the issue. There were times she wished he wasn’t so stubborn. There was no way she was going to win this.
“I’m sorry I can’t give you one in return… I can try and find one now!” she suggested, already scanning the beach as she took a step forward.
“No need for that!” Lloyd reassured her, returning to her side and grabbing her arm to stop her. “Mom said we aren’t staying here for much longer after we’re done cleaning up. You can just make it up to me some other time.”
“Alright! That’s a promise, then. Thank you for the gift,” Colette said, feeling the ridges of the seashell dig into her skin as she tightened her hold. They had gifted each other little trinkets like these many times before, mostly curious objects they came across whenever they played at the playground. She kept every single gift from Lloyd, just as she would this one. Anything she got from her best friend was precious.
Colette could see the adults walking over in the corner of her vision, holding the aforementioned towels and… Popsicles! Oh, those would be delicious. But it also meant her time at the beach was coming to a close.
Colette knew she wouldn’t ever forget this day. This sunny day, filled with joy, fun and wonder…
~~~
28-years-old
"Remember this one?" Lloyd laughed, pointing to the open scrapbook sitting in his lap. His finger sat on a polaroid that was held in place on the page by 4 pieces of cellophane tape, one of which was crooked, and another of which was starting to peel. Colette tapped her finger on the yellowing polaroid as well, recalling how she had gotten it from Aunt Anna and proceeded to stick it in her sketchbook. Words filled the rest of the page, denoting the events of the day, together with a doodle of a seagull sitting on a giant seashell. If she recalled correctly, this was one of the last pages of her scrapbook before she'd gotten too busy to keep it up. It was fun while it lasted, though, absolutely cramming the border of each page with a horrendous amount of washi tape.
She and Lloyd's happy faces peered up at her from the polaroid, a tiny, not very impressive sandcastle visible in front of them. The weather on that day, a foggy memory but not forgotten, for it could never be truly forgotten, couldn't be any more of a contrast to the rain currently slapping against the windows of their apartment, turning the world outside into pure white as the rain obscured all. The wind howled and caused the window panes to rattle in their housings. The air was chilly, fogging up the windows and further blocking their view of the world outside.
Colette should have been shivering on the bed in her denim shorts, but she was nice and toasty instead, legs covered by a thick blanket. She was resting against the backboard, legs stretched out, hair falling to mid-back in messy tangles. The blanket itself had the sewn pattern of dogs doing various things: jumping over fences, dozing off on clouds, running with bones in their mouths. It was adorable! And most of all, it reminded her of another dog who used to run circles around her feet and snuggle on the blankets with her, but who was no longer with them.
She’d even gone the extra mile and put on socks and a hoodie. Lloyd had taken one look at her and… hadn’t done anything else, because this was normal behaviour from her when she was cold. He’d long since accepted it.
Plus, she was leaning against the ultimate source of warmth! Lloyd, who was also under the blanket, legs pressed snugly against hers. Just as always, he could somehow survive the cold in just jeans and an old T-shirt, showing absolutely no signs of being affected. No shivers, nothing. It was impressive. He took "warm-blooded" to the next level.
Her entire body still felt tingly from the cups of hot coffee that Lloyd had brewed in the kitchen earlier. He’d done hers perfectly without even having to ask, the knowledge of how to do so having long been ingrained in his memory. “Precisely half a teaspoon of sugar and half a cup of milk,” he’d said in a sing-song manner, the warm orange of the kitchen’s ceiling light falling upon him and his gentle smile as she’d stood next to him cutting apples. The rhythmic sound of the knife hitting the cutting board, the clinking of the metal spoon against the side of the porcelain cup, and the thudding of raindrops against the window had been the only sounds filling the kitchen.
They’d drunk the coffee first, backs against the countertop and their eyes meeting across the rims of their cups, his hand finding hers in the little space between them. The hot liquid had slid down their throats with ease, settling warm in their bellies. Having drunk his coffee all at one go as he always did, Lloyd had waited for her to finish. He hadn’t said a single word, preferring to maintain the comfortable silence. The only thing he’d done was rub her fingers with his thumb.
They’d then taken turns popping the apple slices in each other’s mouths, the flesh crunchy when they sank their teeth into it, the sweet juice from the fresh fruit a refreshing contrast from the bitter liquid they’d just consumed. Lloyd, as messy an eater as always, had left little bits of apple at the corner of his mouth like tiny yellow spots that she’d had to brush away with her fingers.
Today was Sunday, the day where they both didn't have work to do, unless they were handling some big project with a pending deadline, and had some time to themselves. Their favourite activities to do on this wonderful day of the week included marathoning Disney movies, playing video games together, and going out to their favourite destinations. They also weren't opposed to just lounging on bed together, or taking some alone time.
But today was also a rainy day. She'd actually been woken up by the first claps of thunder in the early morning. The rain had no business being this heavy after the conclusion of the monsoon season, but Mother Nature was fickle, and they could do nothing but accept their given lot. No going out to the Botanic Gardens as they'd originally planned. The only thing they could do was stay home, unless they wanted to catch a cold on purpose.
It was Lloyd who had found her old scrapbook in a corner of their room while aimlessly wandering around the apartment, the book having gathered a thin layer of dust that made her sneeze when he brought it over. She'd forgotten it was sitting on one of the shelves. He had suggested looking over it, since they had nothing better to do. They had just gone through Frozen, Tangled and The Little Mermaid last week - the plots were still fresh in their minds. More fresh than usual. She could recite the entire script of The Little Mermaid from memory if she needed to.
What better time was there to reminisce than with their second anniversary coming up? What better place to do so than in the bedroom they shared, its corners teeming with keepsakes and memories, absolutely overflowing with their love for each other? Just being in here for a minute was enough to make her heart feel warm.
The framed pictures hanging on the walls and sitting on the nightstand - of them and their parents; of the two of them under a sky full of stars; of them and their friends, laughing and popping bottles of wine, fitted in elegant dresses and stylish suits. There were many more pictures, kept in the various albums lining the bookshelf above the bed, which she occasionally took down to look through on days when she was feeling rather nostalgic. Staring up at her from the pages were contented faces from all throughout time, allowing her to track her progress from days long past to the person she was today.
The Siberian Husky plushie she was currently hugging to her chest. The soft fur felt incredible to the touch, and it was so comforting to just run her hands through the fur, tightening her fingers on tufts of it. Behind those beady black eyes were more, however, a significance that no one else but herself could see. A precious memory of a carnival and the time they were finally honest with each other; a step she had been terrified to take but which she’d mustered up the courage to, in order to join Lloyd at the other end of the open door and grab the encouraging hand he offered her. She had stumbled many times along the way, but Lloyd had steadied her every time. She’d gambled on the chance, but it had all been worth it - for she had managed to find her home in Lloyd, and it had all led to the beautiful life she led today, where she got to see his happiness every day.
The wall painted over with galaxies, swirls of pinks and purples and blues, and a single adorable dog in a spacesuit, which they had hand-painted when they first moved in until they were both splattered with paint and giggling.
And of course, the two matching, nondescript metal bands, one lying atop the other on the nightstand.
"You destroyed the sandcastle not soon after, right?" Lloyd said.
"Hey!" Colette pouted, poking Lloyd's side. "Don't tease me."
Lloyd shifted his body away from her attacking finger, still smiling warmly. "I'm not teasing you. I'm just stating what happened." He turned around and retaliated by poking her on the nose, sending her reeling back in a fit of giggles. "It was fun, though!"
"It was," she agreed, struggling to hold back further laughter, bubbling up within her chest like an uncontrollable fountain. “You gifted me a conch shell afterwards. Remember?”
“Of course I remember, silly. It’s sitting on your shelf right now.”
That it was. She’d kept it all these years, the passage of time causing its colour to fade. In all other aspects, it was perfectly conserved, looking just the same as it had on the day he’d pressed it into her hand. She lifted it up to her ear sometimes, just to listen to the sound of the ocean.
Colette flipped to the next page of the scrapbook, looking over all of the memories contained there. Her childhood had been filled with joy, in no small part due to Lloyd, who took every opportunity he could to make her days fun-filled and exciting as he strived to make her face light up with a smile. There were moments where she was suddenly overwhelmed with a great sense of gratefulness for the fact that, out of an infinite number of possible outcomes, she had met Lloyd when she was young. For she was so incredibly fortunate, more fortunate than most, to have met someone who loved and accepted her for everything that she was.
She placed one hand on his cheek, fingers splayed, and turned his head to face her, his warmth spreading through her cold fingers from that one point of contact. Lloyd leaned automatically into her touch.
“Colette...?” Lloyd whispered, leaning automatically into her touch. His eyes searched hers, as he slowly came to understand what she was about to do. This close, she could make out each individual eyelash, attached to the eyelids that fluttered closed over russet eyes. Most people would conclude Lloyd was plain. Average, even. There’d been people who asked her upfront why she’d chosen to settle for him, when according to their honest opinion, her beauty could have landed her much better. They didn’t understand. She was the one fortunate enough to know his love and the miracle of such an incredible person staying by her side when there were so many things she couldn’t give him. A relationship with any other person would have been easier for him, filled with far less of a need for compromise, but he’d chosen her in the end.
Besides, there was beauty in plainness. The daisies that were ignored in favour of the orchids, the mynahs that were overlooked for the orioles. There was beauty to be found there, in the most ordinary of things, the ones people saw every day and had ceased to notice. It was a beauty she itched to capture.
Lloyd, to her, was the most beautiful of them all, a rare treasure that had somehow landed in her hands.
“Shh,” she whispered in return, eyes fluttering shut as she closed the small distance between them. She pressed her lips against his slowly, trying to push behind this one action - the gift she was currently giving - every ounce of the love and appreciation she felt at the moment, enough to fill her heart to the brim. It’d been a while since she’d done this. Two months, maybe? It was a little overdue, having slipped her mind for a time as it always did, no matter how hard she tried to remember. If not for the reminder that had pinged on her phone this morning and made the issue fresh in her mind again, she might have gone another month. She’d have to give him more soon, as per her end of the compromise they had both agreed upon when they’d first started dating, which had served them well all these years. He'd said before that he was alright with getting nothing at all, but that didn't sit right with her. She didn't think it would be fair for him to be the only person giving something up.
Kisses and anything further were always up to her to initiate, since Lloyd, as he’d told her time and time again, wanted her to be comfortable in everything she did. He’d never forced anything on her, content to wait patiently for her to feel ready, whether it be in an hour, a day, a year, or never, perfectly willing to compose their entire relationship on quiet moments spent together and nothing more. She still occasionally struggled with the idea that he was far more than she could ever deserve, even as he gripped her hand tightly and told her she was worth everything. It was getting better with every day she spent in his loving company, the extensive wounds left on her heart in her younger days by a world that told her she would never be enough slowly starting to heal. There would always be scars, but those would fade one day until they were barely visible, until the twinges of pain could barely be felt.
Lloyd’s lips were a little chapped from the cold, unmoving against hers, still tasting faintly of the sweet apple slices from thirty minutes ago. All in all, a pleasant experience.
After a second of shocked stillness, Lloyd came to life again, a small sigh leaving his lips and brushing against hers. His hand came up to cup her ear, his fingers curling in her hair as he kissed her back with nothing but gentleness, always mindful of her boundaries and never pushing her any further. Of course, he had boundaries too. If he’d decided to pull back, she would have respected it. It was the bare minimum she could do for him.
Thirty seconds passed and she pulled away, though not too far, opening her eyes to stare into his. Their hands remained where they were, connecting the two of them.
“Where did that come from?” His words became butterflies, brushing their soft wings against her lips. He tucked her hair behind her ear, his fingers stroking the skin above her ear with the tenderness he always showed her.
“I just felt like saying thank you.” For everything. For all their years together. For all the love he showed her. For the knowledge that Lloyd would continue to stay in her life, for the rest of her time on this wondrous Earth.
Not that long ago, she would have broken away and covered her face with the plushie that was still in her arms, cheeks flushed and too embarrassed to meet Lloyd’s eyes, preferring that he talk to the plushie instead of her. Much like the first kiss, unconventional as it was, that they had shared. Now she could stare unflinchingly with confidence to witness the happiness that bloomed like the most incredible flower on his face.
“Thank you. For the gift,” Lloyd replied, always seconds away from showing his appreciation.
“Shall we look through the rest?” she asked, removing her hand from his cheek to cover the one he had placed on her face, her fingers slotting in perfectly between his as she smiled sweetly.
Here was her sanctuary, where all she knew was serenity and the warmth of loving and being loved.
“Let’s.”
~~~
“Mm.”
Lloyd froze in the middle of flipping to the next page of the scrapbook, watching Colette with eagle eyes. Had he…
But she didn't seem to have awakened. Not really. She made no other sound, only tightened the hold of her arms around his midriff, her face buried in his side and the rest of her lying on her side on the bed. He'd resorted to holding the scrapbook up in order not to accidentally jolt her out of her peaceful sleep. So far, his arms had not started to hurt yet.
Lloyd heaved a sigh of relief, tucking the entirety of the blanket tightly around her shoulders, leaving himself uncovered. Now, swaddled in the blanket, she resembled a cocoon. Adorable. And also what tended to happen each night, as she ended up stealing the blanket eight nights out of ten.
Satisfied that Colette was soundly asleep, Lloyd returned to perusing the contents of the scrapbook, a small smile playing on his lips.
And silence reigned supreme, interrupted only by quiet breathing and the crinkle of paper.
BTS Scenario 10 - Requested - Fluff!
Just very fluffy scenario’s with each member! :) Pillow fort with jimin? Please!
Jin
Tumblr media
Normally when Jin returned home from being away on tour things felt like heaven for weeks but this time it was different. He had been away from months and you had grew used to being on your own, looking after your home by yourself, spending time by yourself so now having to share your space again was causing a few problems. Little things annoyed you like him putting the salt away in the wrong cupboard. You sighed as you sat down next to him placing your legs over his and snuggling into his shoulder. “We need to do something” He said as he ran his hand along one of your legs. You let out a groan in agreement all you wanted was your fun-loving selves back. No more arguing and bickering.
“Pass the flour” You grinned over at Jin as he began emptying everything out the shopping bags that you had just bought at the store. You decided that you were going to have a baking day. You loved baking whenever you were down and Jin loved cooking so it was a win win situation. “Don’t you dare.” You warned him as you saw a grin appear on his face. The type of grin that said he was about to do something he knew he shouldn’t. You pointed the wooden spoon you had in your hand towards him. “Kim Seokjin don’t you dare!” You yelled trying your best to be stern and not laugh as you saw him open the packet of flour and dip his hand into it. He threw his hand in the air throwing the flour in your direction only for it to backfire and go back onto himself. White flour going all over his clothes and hair. You couldn’t help but let out a laugh seeing him standing there covered in flour with a shocked look on his face. “The flour look really suits you. You should do that more often.” You giggled as he pulled you over to him. “Yeah yeah very funny.” He laughed as he pulled the wooden spoon from your hand and hit you on the ass with it. “Hey!” you yelled at him still smiling. “Back to business.” The smile dropped from his face and he began to concentrate on the recipe in front of you.
Yoongi
Tumblr media
You had spent many nights tucked up on a chair in Yoongi’s studio sitting quietly watching him work. You loved spending your nights like this you could see how passionate he was about music and how he’d get lost in it. Sometimes he completely forgot you were there not that you would ever mind you just loved being around him even if you weren’t actually spending any time together. Sometimes just being in the same room knowing he was right there was enough. You looked up from your phone to find Yoongi smiling over at you. “I’m surprised you haven’t fell asleep yet. It’s nearly 2am.” Yoongi chuckled as you let out a yawn as he spoke. “Come ‘ere” He motioned you over with his hand clearing a space next to him, just enough room for you to squeeze in. “You always wanted me to teach you to play.” He smiled as you sat down next to him in front of his keyboard. “Really?” You smiled you had been asking him for as long as you could remember to begin to teach you. You had spent many hours watching him play piano. There was nothing more relaxing to you than watching him play. “Just watch me. I’ll go first then just do exactly as I do.” He smiled at you waiting on you focusing on his hands before he began playing. He only played a few notes before looking at you and waiting on you to try. He chuckled as you hit a few wrong keys. “Here let me help.” He placed his hands over yours guiding you along.
Hoseok
Tumblr media
“Please don’t look at me like that.” Hoseok laughed as you pouted at him. “Come on please! Can’t we just hide away for just one day?” You groaned as you threw yourself back down onto the hotel bed in dramatic fashion. He chuckled as he sat down pulling you back up so you were level with him. “You know there is nothing I would love more but we have rehearsals later on.” He replied as he tucked a strand of your hair behind your ear. “So, we have at least 4 hours right?” You grinned as you got to your feet making your way over to your suitcase. You pulled out your pjs, face masks and some dvds. “I came prepared for a rainy day.” You giggled as he rolled his eyes at you already knowing you had this planned as he helped you pack before leaving for tour. “I’m picking the first movie though. I’m not watching the little mermaid for the 100th time.” He moaned as he took the dvd’s from your hands and started flicking through them. “But it’s my favourite.” You pouted at him only making him laugh at you more. “You know sometimes I feel like I’m babysitting.” He chuckled you stuck out your tongue as you threw the facemask packet at him, hitting it against his chest. “You know Taehyung would happily watch it with me if you would rather I got him... You know I’m sure he’s in the next room maybe I can just knock on the wall.” You went to walk over to the give the wall a knock only for Hoseok to pull your arm causing you to fall onto his lap as he sat on the bed. “You drive me crazy you know that?” He laughed as he kissed you letting his body fall backwards. “Right let’s get the pj’s on!” He let out a cheer as you rolled yourself off of his body and back onto the bed. The rest of your time was spent cuddled together on the bed.
Namjoon
Tumblr media
“You know we haven’t went out just the two of us in forever.” Namjoon spoke softly to you as you sat cuddled up on the couch with the rest of the guys. “Is that your way or asking me out Kim Namjoon?” You giggled as he smiled back at you nodding his head. “Surprise me.” You smiled back at him. When you first met you’d always take turns in choosing what you would do when you went out together. It was anything from fancy restaurants to walks through a park to art galleries. You name it you have both done it. You were pretty sure there wasn’t really anything left still to do other than just enjoy being in each others company.
“Come on sleepy we need to get going or we are going to miss it.” Namjoon nudged you awake you must had dozed off. “Miss what?” You asked in confusion letting him pull you to your feet. “The sunset.”
You felt like you had been walking for over an hour as Joon guided you along his hand never leaving yours. Every now and then he’d look down at you with a fond smile on his face checking to see if you were alright. You finally made it to the top of the hill Namjoon taking the backpack off his back opening it and laying out a blanket for you to both sit on and another to wrap around you to keep you warm. “We made it with plenty of time to spare.” He grinned back at you as he began emptying the rest of the backpack. He had created a small picnic for you both ranging from sweet to savory food. You leaned into his shoulder as he wrapped an around you holding you close to him. “This was great, thank you Joon.” You smiled up at him kissing him gently. It was just you both surrounded by nature there was nothing quite like it. “The best bit is about to happen.” He grinned as he pointed over to the mountains the sun beginning to set behind them.
Jimin
Tumblr media
“If you throw one more pillow at me you’re in for it.” You laughed as Jimin stood at the other side of the room with a massive grin on his face and another pillow in his hand. “I’m bored come play with me.” He whined as he threw the pillow towards you head only for you to catch it. “You sound like such a child.” You couldn’t help but laugh even more as you looked over at your pouting boyfriend. “Can we build a fort?” You asked as you looked around the room at the many blankets and pillows. Within seconds you were both running around finding as many blankets and sheets as you could and finding ways to put them up around the room. “Use the window we can close the window onto the blanket that will keep in in place.” Jimin shouted over to you as you struggled with the blanket in your hand. A short time passed and the room was now a fairy fort. You had places fairy lights on the inside causing the sheets to glow a golden colour. You and Jimin lay on a mattress on the floor between the beds under the sheets cuddled together. “Why have we waited until now to do this?” He laughed as he pulled you tighter into his body. As soon as you had finally finished the fort you had both just been lay cuddling under the lights. “What the hell have you done to the room?” You heard Hoseok say as he opened the door. Both of you fell into a fit of giggles before crawling and popping your heads out of the opening in the sheets to see Hoseok staring down at you both trying his best not to let the grin take over his face. “Welcome to the fairy fort.” You let out a laugh as you opened the the gap further for Hoseok to join you both. “This is the last time you two are allowed in here unsupervised.” Hoseok chuckled.
Taehyung
Tumblr media
“Hey how are you still here?” Tae questioned you as he walked through the door to find you lay on the bed dressed to go out. “My friends sick.” You sighed you knew it was a lie if she was sick she’d have told you hours ago not minutes before the taxi was due to pick you up. You had been planning a night out for weeks. “Well you look very beautiful.” Tae smiled at you as joined you on the bed. “You know you don’t always need to go out to have fun.” He said as he leaned over your body to turn on some music turning it up full blast. “See just like you are in a club.” He grinned as he got up off the bed and started dancing around the room you couldn’t help but grin at him as he danced freely to the music. He grabbed your hand pulling you to your feet. “Come on. You’re having a good night whether you go out or not.” He took your hand spinning you round before pulling you close to his body guiding you. You flicked off your heels so you could jump around more. “You know we should have random dance parties more often.” You giggled as you waved you arms in the air not having a care in the world. “It’s just missing on thing.” Tae stared back at you with a serious look on his face. “Karaoke.” He added as he begun to smile. “Yes!!” You cheered in agreement as you both started to sing along at the top of your lungs. You knew the whole aparatment could hear you but you didn’t care you were having so much fun.
Jungkook
Tumblr media
“You can’t go yet you have to roll a 6 to get out of jail!” You shouted as Jungkook went to move his board game piece. You had decided a game night was on the cards but wanted to be more old school rather than playing videogames again only for Jungkook to beat you for like the millionth time so you, Jungkook, Taehyung and Namjoon were sat on the floor around monopoly. “You know I thought Jungkook was competitive but I’m kind of scared to roll the dice.” Namjoon laughed as it got to his turn. Your whole relationship was sort of built on trying to outdo each other. Your first date you went to the arcade and you sat on the same game for hours until you managed to win against Jungkook you were positive in the end he let you win but you let that memory slip from your mind the main thing was you won in the end. “Yeah well I don’t like cheating.” You smiled as you moved your game piece landing on a place where Jungkook owned. “I believe you owe me money.” He grinned at you putting his hand out waiting on you handing over 100 to him. Hours had passed Namjoon and Taehyung both giving up and going to bed but you and Jungkook were still sat here determined to continue playing until someone ran out of money so far no one was even close. “Right you two call it a night. Whoever has the most wins.” Namjoon came back in the room finally having enough of hearing you bickering over who was going to win. “You know I’m not really that bothered I just love watching her concentration face when she’s rolling the dice.” Jungkook laughed as he watched you stick your tongue out slightly as you began counting the money you had. “You mean you made us sit here all night because you liked looking at my face?” You let out a laugh as you looked over to Jungkook Namjoon stood behind him shaking his head at you both. “I honestly can’t deal with you both anymore. Go to bed.” He left the room leaving you and Jungkook to discover who won not that either of you cared anymore.
Isn’t it neat?
Hi everyone,
Another fic here - I know the James/Lily - Eric/Ariel thing has been done before but this is my take on it. Sorry if ‘you're all mermaid-ed out! Very little plot to this thing but I hope you all enjoy anyways :)
Summary: Lily Evans has been playing Ariel the mermaid at Disney World Orlando for six months. She's about to meet her new Prince Eric.
Rated T for language (also so much fluff and cheese you might perish!)
“Does anyone have any primer?” Lily yelled to the dressing room behind her, “I’m out of my FX.”
“Here,” Mary yelled back amongst the throng of girls, chucking Lily her Smashbox version over the heads of Emmeline and Dorcas who both ducked.
“This’ll work?” Lily confirmed doubtfully, knowing that she didn’t really have any other option as she squirted the clear gel into her palm.
“Nothing is going to work in this heat, Lil,” Mary replied, now slathering her face with foundation. “But it’ll stay on for at least 6 hours. Then you might need to reapply.”
“Fuck, fuck, fuck, I hate this fucking dress,” Marlene, who was by far the most ready of any of them, moaned as she tugged the bright yellow taffeta monstrosity up around her hips.
“Hey, at least yours hasn’t got sleeves,” Dorcas retorted, from next to Lily, still in the process of pinning an auburn wig with pigtails onto her head.
“Oh please, you practically begged McGonagall to give you Anna!” Marlene replied, now pulling the dress up around her arms.
“It was winter then!” Dorcas said miserably, grabbing a matte mauve lipstick out of her makeup bag.
“Can we all just be happy that none of us is Minnie?” Mary inserted, in between violently attacking her face with a beauty blender.
The group of girls murmured in approval.
“Technically, you should be the happiest out of everyone, Lil,” Emmeline said, running a brush through her black wig as she puffed up the bun. “Sometimes they let you go out in a bikini.”
“Hey, none of you have ever worn that tail,” Lily replied, as she leaned into the mirror to draw on her eyebrows. “It’s heavy as hell. It might be worse than the dress. And they haven’t let me wear it in ages.”
“I think they figured out you were making all the dads a little too happy in that purple excuse for a bra,” Mary said lowly, causing their whole dressing room to laugh.
“Men are such trash,” Emmeline added.
“Speaking of trash, aren’t you meeting your new Eric today?” Marlene asked as she pulled white elbow gloves up over her arms.
“Later on tonight,” Lily said, “after the parade. And if he’s anything like the previous one, I think I might quit.”
Lily’s previous Eric had been the epitome of trash and was exactly who Marlene was referring to when she’d asked the question. Dave, or Prince Fuckboy as he was better known to the group, had spent his entire 6 months with the cast showing up late, being rude and, worst of all, sleeping his way through the Princess lineup.
After sleeping with Marlene, he’d made his way around Elsa, Tinkerbell and Jasmine, which was the unfortunate reason Bertha, Florence and Emma no longer sat with the rest of the girls. That drama had continued for at least a month until Prince Fuckboy realised everyone hated him and had quit.
“Apparently he’s a friend of Hook’s,” Dorcas told them.
“Hook?” Emmeline, who was the most recent addition to the cast, asked. “I don’t think I’ve met him.”
“Sirius Black,” Dorcas replied, as Lily smiled to herself, knowing that Dorcas’s usual rant about Sirius was coming. “And you don’t want to meet him. He’s totally method,” she continued, placing an unusual amount of disdain on the word method, “and speaks in a ridiculous English accent the entire time he’s here, even on breaks, and challenges everyone to duels all day. Fucking idiot.”
Lily couldn’t help but giggle. She was actually rather fond of Sirius’s approach to his work and suspected it had nothing to do with his devotion to acting but rather because he loved pretending to be a pirate all day.
“He is a fucking idiot and you know it,” Dorcas said to Lily when she saw her laughing.
“Well, at least he’s not another Prince Fuckboy,” Lily said, adding a slick of bright red lipstick before spritzing her whole face with setting spray. “And you have to admit, he’s a very good Hook.”
“As long as he hasn’t brought us another Dave to be Eric, we’ll be best friends,” Marlene smiled grimly. “How the hell am I the only one ready?” She asked forcefully, gloved hands on her hips.
“Because you don’t have to colour in your eyebrows to match your wig,” Lily replied, grabbing her long, curly ginger hair and twisting it onto her head.
“I can’t believe they still haven’t asked you to be Merida yet,” Mary observed, now pulling on Tiana’s light green velvet dress.
“Yeah, well in the nineties mermaids existed but not actual ginger people, apparently,” Lily said as she positioned the long red wig onto her head with ease. “That mermaid must’ve had some amazing hair dye down in Atlantis.”
“Hey, black people didn’t exist until 2010 apparently,” Mary added, fixing her own wig on. “And now there’s one black princess, there’ll obviously never be another one ever again.”
“Obviously,” Emmeline agreed, rolling her eyes. “Right, time to tie on this fucking awful sash,” she said before standing and moving to the costume rail, leaving Dorcas and Lily sitting at the mirrors.
“I’m still waiting on the animated world to admit lesbians exist,” Dorcas said to Lily with a wry shrug. “And don’t tell the boss, but I play everyday like I’m in love with Emma,” she winked, referring to their cast mate who played Jasmine.
“Amazing,” Lily laughed, looking around the dressing table for her aqua headpiece. “Does Emma know this?”
“Oh, she knows I think she’s hot as hell.”
Finished with her makeup and hair, Lily stood up to go and find her human dress, which was an unsightly aquamarine colour to match her headpiece.
“Are they ever going to let you back in the tail?” Dorcas asked, moving with Lily to grab her purple cape.
“They’re still working on the Grotto since the break-in,” Lily said, shuffling into her dress. “I think it’ll be open again in a few weeks.”
When she had first started at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Lily’s main role had been to sit in Ariel’s grotto and do meet and greets. She had her own float in the daily parade and occasionally appeared as a human walking around the park (when she was told to) or at Cinderella’s restaurant, but for the most part, wearing the tail in the grotto was her main duty. Then, around a month ago, some boys had broken in to the park, and wrecked her grotto, as well as a number of other attractions. Lily had been in human form ever since, which was killing her, because Ariel’s human dress was puffy, heavy and sweltering in the Orlando heat.
Not that she complained too much. She loved being Ariel and was delighted to be cast as her when she’d first started six months ago. A small part of Lily lived in perpetual fear of being recast. Which was ridiculous because it would definitely happen at some point and they were all warned not to get too attached to any particular character.
Lily had done her best to adhere to this warning but she’d adored Ariel as a child and as she’d gotten older, Ariel had remained her favourite Disney princess. And judging by the response she got from the little kids who came to the park, Ariel was still a very popular princess, even eighteen years after she’d first appeared in animated form.
In truth, Lily had loved every minute of working at Disney. The only bad time had been the appearance of Dave.
“I know I hate this dress,” Lily said quietly to Dorcas, “but I can live with it. I’m not sure I could live with another Dave.”
“Look, I know Black is an idiot, but I doubt he’s friends with jerks,” Dorcas reassured her pragmatically, checking her appearance in the mirror. “Are you nervous about meeting him? Don’t be nervous.”
“Well you spend a lot of time with your prince,” Lily observed, fixing the wig down over her dress. “And the kids freak out when they see you together so obviously McGonagall is always sending you out together. It’d be nice to be paired with someone you can stand. I mean, you get on with Dirk, right?”
“Yeah,” Dorcas responded, “I don’t think he knows I’m gay cause he’s always flirting with me, but we get on fine.”
“Poor Dirk.”
“I’ve seen his sister on Facebook, she’s cute” Dorcas said with a grin. “Maybe he’ll introduce us.”
“Girls!” They heard McGonagall call from the hallway, “it’s 8.55”
“Coming!” Lily called back, jumping up and down a few times to settle her skirt.
“Right,” Dorcas said with a swish of her cloak, “Time to be asked if I want to build a snowman ten thousand times.”
Letting her voice drift higher and adding in her signature Ariel warble, Lily followed Dorcas out of the dressing room, “you’re such a guppy, Anna,” she replied, saying goodbye to Lily Evans as she transformed into the little mermaid just as she reached the bright sunshine of the park.
---------------------------
“I am fucking exhausted,” Marlene breathed, stripping off her gloves as they all trailed into the dressing room at 10pm that night. “And I hate teenaged boys.”
“Yeah, I saw some guys bothering you,” Mary replied, throwing herself down into her dressing room chair.
“Trying to get me to break character. Assholes. They were trying to film the whole thing and put it on Instagram,” Marlene spat.
“What were they doing?”
“Oh, the usual shit. Calling me a furry lover. I ignored them.”
“Good for you,” Lily said, inwardly wondering how soon she could get the metric tonne of foundation she had on off her face.
“At least you didn’t get dole whip spilled all over you,” Emmeline moaned, already taking off Mulan’s dress. “Costume are going to kill me. This is the fourth time in two weeks I’ve needed a new dress.”
“Ariel!” Sounded McGonagall’s voice from outside.
“I think she means me,” Lily whispered to them all with a wink as she slipped off her chair. Wincing as her weary feet touched the floor, Lily made her way to the hall.
When she entered the hallway, Lily saw McGonagall standing with her cherished clipboard and right beside her, a man who was undoubtedly Prince Eric.
All of the guys who played Princes at the park were good looking but Lily felt her stomach clench as she took in her new work husband. She could see why they had cast him as Eric. His black hair was thick and windswept and curled in at the edges of his lightly tanned skin. There was no way he’d be wearing a wig. As his eyes fell on her, he greeted her with a show stopping smile, and Lily couldn’t help but notice his strong jaw and gorgeous hazel eyes.
“James, this is Lily, or Ariel to you,” McGonagall said to the boy, now scribbling on the board. James opened his mouth to say something but their boss got there first, “you can smile, dance, hold hands whilst still and give her a two second hug,” she continued, briskly ticking the board as she listed each item, “but no kissing. At all. Ever.”
“Okay,” James nodded steadily, looking at McGonagall with slight apprehension.
“Make sure he doesn’t get lost,” she said to Lily abruptly before striding away.
“Is she always that scary?” He whispered, leaning into Lily as they both watched Minerva leave.
“I’m afraid so,” Lily told him with a weak smile, “she’s in charge of rules and makes sure we all follow them.”
“And we’re married, right?”
“Yes,” Lily nodded, trying not to stare at him too much.
“Wow. Can’t even kiss my wife. What a bummer,” James said with a deep sigh, causing Lily to laugh.
“Disney is strictly a PG place,” she said, “but waltzing is good fun. The kids love it.”
“They showed me during training,” James replied. “It took me a while to get it but I don’t think I’ll embarrass you.”
Lily laughed again as she leaned against the wall, “I’m a walking, talking fish woman. I doubt you are going to be what embarrasses me,” she smiled, trying not to blush when his eyes did a quick sweep of her outfit. “So, did McGonagall show you around?”
“I came down for the parade,” he responded, pushing his hands into his jeans as Lily noticed his sinewy tanned arms. He was going to look good in Eric’s white shirt. “It was great. You were great.”
“Thanks,” she said, “it’s pretty easy without Eric to be honest. I just sit there and smile and wave.”
“And with Eric?”
“Well, that’s when the hugging and the dancing and the hand-holding comes in,” Lily continued, giving him a little grin. “But it’s a 30 minute parade so trying to keep that going is difficult.”
“Especially when you hate your Eric, right?”
Lily blanched a little as James smiled guilty at her, “Sirius told me about the guy I’m replacing.”
“Yeah, well, he was a jackass,” Lily admitted, swishing her dress about a little. “And what’s worse, he made it really awkward for everyone here. We were all glad when he left.”
“Okay, well I promise to be absolutely nothing like him and then you won’t mind dancing with me for half an hour,” he suggested, his eyes twinkling as Lily’s stomach jumped again.
“Deal,” she agreed, hoping to sound as normal as possible. “So, when do you start?”
“Next week,” James told her happily, “they’re just sorting my contacts and then I’m good to go.”
“Cool,” Lily said, “well, it was really nice meeting you. I’m going to go take off this powder puff before I faint,” she closed, giving him another smile before she turned towards the dressing room door.
“Wait,” James called, stalling her in her step.
“Yeah?”
“You’re my Princess, right?” Lily laughed lightly as James blushed and corrected himself, “I mean, you’re who I’ll be working with? Going forward?”
“Yeah,” She replied, hearing a little shyness creep into her voice, “as long as I don’t get recast, I’m your Princess.”
-----------------------------
James, as it turned out, was an absolute dream to work with.
On Monday morning, he was there waiting for her as soon as she stepped out of the dressing room. In his white flowing shirt, red cumber-band, turned up trousers, boots and blue contacts, he looked both exactly like Eric and unreasonably hot.
They spent the whole day together and as predicted, all the kids adored both of them together. They both signed hundreds of autographs and took hundreds of photos and selfies, and when the parade started at nine o’clock, they had their first dance.
It wasn’t without a hitch, as they both stepped on each other’s toes several times but as long as their smiles stayed on, no one in the audience noticed.
“So, how’d I do?” James asked her, as they moved backstage and walked towards her dressing room.
“Really good,” Lily said a little breathlessly, noticing that they were still walking arm in arm, as though they were out in public.
“Sorry about the feet,” he whispered into her ear as they passed a stream of characters all hurrying to their dressing rooms.
“That’s okay,” she giggled, giving his arm a squeeze, “I stepped on your toes too.”
“Yeah but I’m a lot heavier than you are!”
“We’ll get better with practice,” Lily told him. “Oh and one other thing, next time a kid asks you about Sebastian or Flounder, technically you never met them, so next time just say they’re ‘friends of Ariel’.”
“Right,” James nodded, “and Sebastian is the lobster, yeah?”
Lily stopped walking and her hand fell away from his arm, “crab,” she corrected bluntly. “Sebastian is a crab.”
“Sure,” he smiled uneasily, letting his hands fall to his side. “A crab.”
Feeling very suspicious, Lily eyed James closely.
“They did teach you about Sebastian during training?”
“Yeah, they did, it’s just…”
“It’s just what?” She asked, feeling her eyes narrow.
“Well, it’s kind of hard to remember when…” he trailed off, not really looking at her.
“When?” Lily prompted.
“When you haven’t really seen what he looks like,” James finally said lowly, rubbing at the back of his neck.
“What?” She yelped, so loudly that Donald Duck and Goofy stopped to eye the two of them before moving on. “You haven’t seen The Little Mermaid? James, that’s like day one!”
“It was day five,” he disagreed weakly, obviously nervous due to her reaction. “I was ill so they said I could just watch it at home.”
“And?”
“And…I sort of…never did,” he admitted with a small shrug as Lily cursed him for being so attractive. It would be so much easier to be annoyed with him if she could stop staring at his gorgeous face.
“James, if McGonagall finds out you’ve never seen it, she will lose it!” Lily warned him, not wanting to picture the monumental explosion that would occur if that happened. What was worse: he’d probably get fired and then they’d need another new Eric and Lily couldn’t take the suspense of waiting to meet another new Prince. Plus, she was sort of growing fond of this one.
“Yeah, I got that impression when I met her.”
“I mean, you don’t even know how we met!” She persisted, shoving his shoulder lightly.
“I’m guessing in the sea?” He joked feebly, as Lily rolled her eyes.
“Unacceptable,” Lily said, folding her arms. “I am not letting you get fired over this.”
“Would you miss me, Princess?” James grinned, eyes sparkling.
“If you get fired they might bring Dave back,” Lily observed grimly, ignoring the flutter in her stomach that appeared when he obviously flirted with her, “and then I’d have to quit.”
“Okay, I will watch the movie…” James appeased her, shaking his head.
“Oh, you will watch that movie,” Lily ground out, stepping closer to him. “My number is on the staff call sheet. Text me your address. Next Sunday, I’m coming over and by the end of the day you will know the names, hair and fin colours of all my six sisters!”
------------------------
Of course, Lily hadn’t expected the teasing she ended up receiving from her fellow Princesses when she told them her weekend plans, which was probably quite naïve.
“You’re dating your Prince,” Marlene had giggled, Friday evening as they all de-wigged.
“I am not,” Lily protested ignoring their sceptical smirks. “I’m saving his job. And my sanity. Also, McGonagall changed the rules after Dave. No dating Princes! Remember?”
“Please,” Emmeline interjected dryly, “as if you haven’t noticed how hot he is.”
“Everyone has,” Mary said, saving Lily the trouble of dodging the question. “Did you see Bertha all over him in the canteen this afternoon?” She asked the group, as Lily felt her stomach twist unpleasantly. She hadn’t noticed that, being too preoccupied with the book she usually read at lunch.
“Yup,” Dorcas stated blithely, pulling off her wig to reveal flowing blonde hair with a fuchsia streak through it. “If he’s not careful, this is going to turn out to be another Prince Fuckboy sitch.”
“James is not Dave,” Lily inserted forcefully, taking off Ariel’s necklace and throwing it onto the counter. “He’s not going to behave like that.”
Embarrassed as she saw the girls exchanging knowing looks due to her outburst, Lily fixed an unconvincing smile onto her face. “He knows all about Dave and the drama and he’s aware of how horrible that all was,” she said calmly, “I doubt he’ll put us all through that again.”
Sensing an end to the conversation, Lily continued to unpin her wig, enjoying the wonderful feeling of removing the pins from her head. She undressed quickly and changed into her street uniform, before making her way to the door, saying goodbye to them all as she went.
“Well, we’re all here arguing over him,” she heard Emmeline say lowly to Marlene as she exited, “it sure feels like another Fuckboy situation.”
--------------------------------
Emmeline’s words from Friday night were still ringing in her ears as she walked to James’s apartment on Sunday afternoon. And of course, now she knew about Bertha, she had watched her all day Saturday doing the best she could to get James’s attention.
It shouldn’t have annoyed Lily and it was ridiculous that she felt in any way possessive of James. But watching Bertha flirt, smile and laugh her way through lunch with him stoked an ugly feeling in Lily that she soon recognised as jealousy.
Knowing that she needed to quell this before she herself was the instigator of drama, Lily resolved not to admire James anymore. In fact, as she crossed the street to the grey wooded building that she  thought was where he lived, Lily decided that she would not in any way fancy James and Bertha could have him if she liked.
Climbing the stairs and ringing the bell, Lily was happy in her determination…until James opened the door.
He was wearing glasses.
Fuck.
He had never worn glasses before. A bit like every other piece of clothing he decided to wear, the glasses looked unfairly good on him. She didn’t know what it was about them, but they finished his face beautifully – just in the way that she could picture taking them off to get a better look at his eyes. Maybe during a time when they were standing closer together. With as much energy as she could muster, Lily pushed this thought out of her head. She wasn’t allowed to date her cast mate.
Lily was about to apologise for standing awkwardly in silence in his doorway when she noticed that James seemed to be experiencing the same vocal block too, his eyes fixed on her.
“What?” She asked nervously, knowing that this wasn’t the most polite or graceful way to break the silence but she was desperate so it would have to do.
James swallowed, “oh, um…it’s nothing…it’s just…”
“Just?”
“Eh, your hair…and your, um…eyes,” he proceeded brokenly, his right hand slipping into his hair as Lily wondered what it would be like to run her fingers through it, “I’ve never seen you without…”
He trailed off again, his eyes doing another sweep of her face as Lily reminded herself to breathe.
“I can’t believe they make you wear a wig and contacts,” he finally managed after another swallow.
“Well, you know,” Lily shrugged, feeling her cheeks turn red, “I have to look like her,” she said, holding up the DVD box with Ariel on the front. “Ready for your homework?”
With a jerky smile, James brought her into his flat, closing the door after her.
“You know, I had to borrow a DVD player from my mom,” James said as he followed her into the living room.
“Well that’s your fault for getting rid of an essential piece of technology,” Lily scolded him, dropping her bag beside the couch before sitting down.
“Pfft,” James snorted, taking the DVD off her, “we definitely could’ve just streamed it.”
“My fair merlady,” Lily heard a booming voice echo from behind her, “welcome to our most humble abode.”
“Sirius,” Lily grinned, hoping off the couch and running around to greet him, as Sirius performed a deep bow before grabbing her hand and kissing the back of it.
“Captain Hook, Princess,” Sirius corrected politely in his flawless English accent.
“We spent an hour deciding if he could speak to you normally,” James said from behind them, not sounding impressed.
“You should not complain,” Sirius responded with an edge to his voice, “remember, it was I who provided the popped corn.”
“Are you joining us, Captain?” Lily asked.
“Alas, no,” Sirius replied, as James let out a ‘thank god’ over their shoulders. “I am expecting a duel with that wretched boy Pan this week and so must practice my fencing.”
“He’s going to the gym,” James translated as Lily heard the opening tones of the movie echo from the tv.
“Adieu, my dear,” Sirius called as he strode out of the apartment, gym bag in hand.
“I couldn’t live without him, but if I could, I would’ve killed him by now,” James said without prompting as Lily joined him on the couch.
“Shhhhh,” Lily hissed, poking him in the elbow, as the Disney castle appeared on the screen. “I can promise you there will be a quiz after this.”
James surprised Lily by being fairly quiet throughout the opening scenes of the movie, save for the occasional comment: “her father’s a dick,”… “he definitely looks like a lobster,” and various other observations which made her laugh.
“He’s a crab and you best remember that,” she warned.
“As if it matters…”
“Shhhh,” she quieted him again, knowing what was coming as Ariel swam towards the surface and fireworks exploded from the ship. “Oh my god,” she breathed as Eric came into view, his dog Max bounding around the deck. “This is the best part of the movie.”
“You think he’s attractive?” James asked, sounding unimpressed and she could tell he was watching her.
“Eh…yeah, I’m not blind,” Lily answered emphatically
“I suppose he’s alright…for a cartoon,” James retorted and she couldn’t help but smile at his miffed tone.
“Disney have a really random record of drawing ridiculously hot people,” she told him, still enjoying the view of Eric. “Besides, you should take it as a compliment,” she added thoughtlessly, cringing when she realised what she had said.
“Oh, so, because you think he’s hot that must mean you think I am?” James replied, sounding remarkably happier as he turned his whole body to her.
Trying to regain her composure, Lily shrugged, “Eric is generally regarded as one of the better looking Disney Princes…by everyone.”
With a brief grin, James felt silent and turned back to the movie.
“He’s clearly a shit sailor if his ship is sinking.”
“He’s a Prince and there was a storm…what do you want him to do?”
They watched in silence until the moment when Ariel had rescued Eric and was trying to revive him on the shore. As she sang to him, Lily unconsciously started to sing along quietly, as she had been doing ever since she had first watched the movie.
To her left, she heard a soft noise which broke her out of her daydream.
“Sorry,” she said, looking over to James to see him watching her again. “Old habit.”
“Don’t be,” he replied kindly, a crooked smile about his mouth, “you can sing.”
“Thanks,” she said awkwardly, not really knowing what to say.
“Why don’t you sing at work?”
“We’re not allowed,” Lily advised, “we’re specifically told not to sing. Did you pay attention at all during training?”
With a guilty shrug, James replied, “I still don’t get why you can’t sing.”
“I guess they want the kids to hear the songs the way they remember them,” she went on, “which I understand. I know I play her but Jodi Benson will always be Ariel to me.”
“Oh, she’s going to do something stupid to be with the stupid hot Prince, isn’t she?” James winced now watching the movie again.
“Can you blame her?”
The movie continued and James revelled in his correct prediction, yelling loudly at Ariel not to sign Ursula’s contract much to Lily’s amusement.
“There is no way in hell that would be legally binding!”
Now feeling a bit bolder, Lily sang her way through the rest of the songs with James laughing along until they both fell quiet at ‘Kiss the Girl”.
“Noooooo!” James howled when Flotsam and Jetsam overturned the boat Eric and Ariel were sitting in. “Fuck those eels!”
Nearly crying with laughter, Lily patted him on the arm, “I hate those things,” she consoled.
“I have never been so annoyed,” he announced, glaring at the television screen. “Why didn’t they just kiss?!”
“We’re only just half way through the movie, they couldn’t kiss now.”
James sat and pouted unhappily as the movie went on, only making another noise when Vanessa – Ursula’s human alter ego – appeared, “hello,” he let out lowly, his eyebrows dancing, as she slinked onto the screen.
“Hey!” Lily cried, feeling an unwarranted level of outrage. “Don’t you ‘hello’ her! She’s evil! She’s trying to distract you from Ariel. You can’t find her attractive!”
“Oh, so you can think cartoon Eric is hot but I can’t think evil Ariel is?”
“Eric is hot but he’s not evil! If Eric had an evil twin, I wouldn’t be ‘hello-ing’ all over him!”
“Look, you can’t deny she’s good looking,” James placated her, gesturing to Vanessa on the screen as Lily harrumphed, “but will it make you feel better if I say she’s not a patch on Ariel?”
“All I am asking is that you show a little loyalty to your wife,” Lily said evenly. “That witch has her voice!”
“I cannot believe we are arguing over which cartoon is hotter.”
“Well, you work at Disney now, Potter. Get used to it.”
Again, they fell silent as the movie played on and they watched as Ursula was discovered, defeated and Eric and Ariel married in their happily ever after.
“You know, you’re right. I didn’t like Vanessa so much by the end,” James conceded lowly, stretching out now that the film was over.
“Told you,” Lily gloated. “And at least now, if McGonagall asks, you can honestly say you’ve watched it.”
“Very true,” he agreed, “and I now also know the names of all assorted sentient fish and crustaceans. Thanks for taking the time to make sure I don’t get fired,” he smiled earnestly.
“You’re welcome,” she replied, hoping to sound normal as her heart started to thud against her chest.
“Did you do this with Dave?” He asked, fixing her with a look that wasn’t helping Lily at all.
Lily laughed, “no,” she breathed. “But I’m sure Dave watched the movie during training.”
“Bad luck, Dave.”
Her stomach now tingling, Lily knew she had to remove herself from his couch before she found herself in a tricky position.
“I should go,” she smiled tightly, getting to her feet to remove the DVD.
“Okay,” James said, moving after her. “I’ll see you tomorrow morning?”
“Yeah,” she said, walking towards the door. “As long as you can recognise me.”
“As if I’d forget you, Princess,” he winked, making Lily curse herself for flirting with him when she had promised she wouldn’t. “Unless, Vanessa is there, of course.”
She had just enough time to yelp in outrage before he closed the door cackling.
------------------
Working with James was easy. Working with James whilst trying not to fancy him was not so easy.
“Even with the blue contacts in he looks good,” she overheard Mary observe.
“His real eyes are nicer though,” Emmeline replied and all the girls in their dressing room agreed.
“You’re being awfully quiet, Evans,” Marlene cut in, sweeping past Lily’s dressing space whilst Lily was unbuttoning her gown.
“I’m not being quiet, I’m trying to get out of this stupid dress so I can go home!” Lily stressed, inwardly knowing that the reason she was dying to go home was so she wouldn’t have to hear them talk about James.
“Oh, don’t be in such a huff!” Marlene retorted, turning Lily around to do her buttons for her. “No one here actually fancies him. Except you. And Bertha, of course.”
“I do not fancy him,” Lily replied, despising how childish and ridiculous she sounded. “I agree he has nice eyes, but he’s my cast mate and that’s all.”
“Poor James,” Marlene said, giggling along with the rest of the girls, “he’ll be devastated to hear that.”
“Oh, would you stop?” Lily hissed. “You’re just talking nonsense now!”
“You can’t see the way he looks at you up on that float, I can!”
“I don’t know if you’re aware, but being a good actor is one of the requirements to work here. As is keeping your mitts off your fellow employees!”
“Sorry to interrupt what is clearly an important conversation,” Dorcas cut in dryly, “but has McGonagall spoken to you all about this Buzzfeed thing?”
“Yes,” Mary replied as the rest of the group all echoed her. “It’s this Sunday, we’re bringing our own costumes but there’ll be hair and makeup there.”
“And why are we doing this again?”
“More advertising apparently,” Mary told her as she hung up her costume. “Buzzfeed are obsessed with the Princesses so they want some shoot to show us all off to their readers.”
“Sounds wonderful,” Dorcas droned, rolling her eyes. “All I needed was an excuse to spend another day dressed for the alpines.”
“Are the guys coming?” Emmeline asked, now styling her own hair.
“Yes, we are,” a voice sounded from outset the dressing room as they all jumped, “also, can I come in? I need to speak to Lily.”
Eyes widening when she realised it was James, Lily yelled back, “just a minute,” as she started to undress quickly. “If he heard what any of you said, I will put fairy dust in all of your wig caps,” she hissed quietly, eyeballing them all before pulling on her shorts and t-shirt.
“Drama queen,” Marlene shot back, striding to the dressing room door and pulling it open once Lily was dressed. “Enter at your own peril, Potter,” she greeted James, “everyone is feeling very Princessey today.
Ignoring Marlene, Lily walked towards James. “What?” She asked very abruptly, seizing up inwardly at her rudeness but she could feel the eyes of the rest of the group on them.
James watched her a bit uncertainly before beginning, “so, one day, I will manage this dance without injuring you,” he half-laughed, folding him arms, presumably from her forced coldness.
“It’s fine, James,” she sighed, not at him, but because of the total silence in the dressing room as they talked.
“Maybe you guys should practice,” Emmeline put in cheerfully and Marlene exchanged a grin with her.
Lily shot her a look.
“Actually, that was what I was going to suggest,” James replied awkwardly, hand in his hair. “Unless, you have somewhere to be?”
“She has nowhere to be,” Marlene smiled, walking back to her own table. “I know because we have big plans to go home and watch Queer Eye at mine.”
Knowing that she wasn’t getting out of this without a serious amount of effort and really not wanting to offend James anymore than she probably already had, Lily didn’t bother to object. And they did need to practice.
“Great,” James smiled, still sounding a little uncertain.
Walking towards him, Lily let her hands drift upwards, one to his shoulder and the other into his waiting hand.
“We don’t have to…here,” he said to her quietly, as his arm came around her waist.
“It’s fine,” Lily reassured again, giving him a tight smile. At least this way, her cast mates could see there wasn’t anything there.
But as he pulled her a little closer and their chests met, Lily felt her heart start to beat rapidly. Did he always hold her this closely?
“You move forward first,” she said lowly, stealing herself with the hand on his shoulder.
“Yeah,” he confirmed, equally quiet.
After a short pause, Lily counted them in, her eyes on their feet.
They managed the first set of four…and then the second. And then the third. But then James stopped.
“You can do it fine in here,” she observed, giving him a small smile.
“Well, it’s not exactly parade conditions,” Dorcas pointed out.
“Would you…” James started, before stopping.
“What?”
“I need you to look at me,” he told her with a reluctant smile, “I think I’ve worked out that’s where the problem is.”
Lily felt, rather than saw, their audience exchange looks.
“Okay,” she agreed after a deep breath. And as she counted them in, she raised her eyes to lock on his.
After two moves, James stood on her left foot.
“Try again,” Lily said immediately, not wanting to give anyone a chance to comment.
She counted once more and they moved back, side, forward, side…She raised her eyes to his and immediately, James tripped.
“Shit, sorry,” he breathed, eyes and arms dropping away from her as his face coloured red.
“It’s okay,” Lily said kindly, unable to stop the butterflies swarming in her stomach.
“Evans is known for her amazing eyes,” Dorcas interjected pleasantly, “I wouldn’t beat yourself up, Potter.”
“Then how come it still happens when you’ve got contacts in?” James asked lightly, quietly enough that only he and Lily could hear. And then he gave her one of those smiles that made her all her limbs feel weak.
“I don’t have to look at you,” Lily offered as a solution.
James shook his head, “no, we’re in love,” he replied quickly before realisation crept onto his face and he laughed steadily amongst the titters in the room, “Eric and Ariel are in love,” he clarified modestly, not really looking at her. “When you’re in love, you look at each other.”
Their eyes met again.
“Exactly like that,” Marlene cut through and though Lily kept her eyes on James, she could tell her friend was grinning. “You guys are such great actors.”
Between that remark and the thudding of her heart, Lily had to move away.
“Maybe we can practice at lunch tomorrow,” she suggested, walking away from him.
“Yeah,” he agreed, “that sounds good. I won’t take up more of your time now.”
“Bye James,” Emmeline called and Lily heard the dressing room door close over her shoulder.
“Wow, Lil’,” Marlene started, “practice at lunchtime tomorrow. What a great way to stop Bertha from getting anywhere near him.”
Lily chucked her beauty blender at her.
-----------------------------
As it turned out, Lily did not see James at lunchtime the next day.
She had awoken in the middle of the night with a fever which, at the time she had related to the rather interesting dream he had been having about James. But, by the next morning, she had a permanent lump stuck in her throat, found it hard to swallow and felt weak and cold all over.
After she called in sick to McGonagall, she just about made it to the doctors without fainting. Upon hearing the hoarseness in her voice, it took the doctor all of three minutes to diagnose her with laryngitis.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if your voice goes completely,” was her final word as Lily traipsed out of the office. “Should be over in two weeks. Plenty of bed rest, lots of water and no talking, okay?”
It occurred to Lily as she made her way home that she probably still could go into work if she wanted. That’s what Sirius would do. If she was method, that’s what she’d do too.
Unfortunately, her fever and dizziness overtook her before she was able to even progress that thought and Lily was again lucky to make it to her bed in time to pass out for the rest of the day.
When she woke up again on Tuesday night, she found several messages on her phone from Marlene and Dorcas objecting to her sick day and demanding that she return to work tomorrow. Lily let them know she was ill and probably wouldn’t be in for the rest of the week before promptly falling asleep again.
It wasn’t until Sunday morning, when she had progressed to being able to make herself soup and toast, that Lily was reminded of the Buzzfeed article.
She was busy peering over the toaster wondering when it would pop, when her phone rang.
Answering it before remembering that she couldn’t talk, Lily jumped to hear James’s voice at the end of the line.
“Hello?” His voice echoed down the telephone, “hello? Lily? I’m not sure if this is a voicemail…”
Lily was contemplating hanging up and sending him a text to explain when James continued to talk.
“Marlene said you were sick…I’m sorry for ringing you when you’re not well but…well, we’re down at this Buzzfeed thing and McGonagall has assigned Bertha to be Ariel…”
Lily nearly dropped the phone.
“…and well…this is stupid…but it sort of feels like Vanessa is here instead of Ariel. And I remembered what you said about loyalty to my wife so…so I just wanted to say that. And to say it feels weird doing this without you.”
She held onto the counter, nearly breathless to hear what he would say next.
“Anyway, if you can get here…I know you’re sick so don’t if you can’t…but if you can, we could do the shoot with the real Ariel. So yeah. That’s all I wanted to say. Bye.”
By the time the toast had popped, Lily had brushed her hair, teeth and was downstairs waiting on her uber.
---------------------------------
“I thought you were sick!”
Marlene was the first to greet her after she had made it into the photo shoot.
She’d already had to use her phone to type out her issue for the security guard and doorman and so she just handed it to Marlene, note already open.
“You’ve lost your voice?’’
Lily nodded.
“Brilliant!” Marlene laughed, “do you need me to explain forks too?”
Lily glared at her until Marlene relented and took her by the arm.
“They were going to let Bertha do Ariel – of course she was dying to – but now you’re here, there’s no way they’ll go to the bother of changing her from Elsa to Ariel,” Marlene chatted as she guided Lily through the studio.
As they walked Lily observed Dorcas and Dirk, arm in arm in the setting of a snowy mountain.
“I’ll sort this with McGonagall,” Marlene continued as they walked to the make-up and hair area, “you just get ready. They’re doing you and James after B&B so you still have a while to go.”
Marlene brought her up to a man who was in the middle of styling Mary’s hair.
“This is Lily, Fabian,” she announced.
“Lily!” Mary greeted, sounding a bit giddy.
“She’s Ariel. She’s lost her voice,” Marlene said loudly, as Fabian and Mary regarded her with amazement.
“Oh my God,” Fabian said, his hands falling away from Mary’s hair. “Really?”
Lily nodded exaggeratedly, struggling not to roll her eyes.
“You’re not contagious are you?” Mary asked uncertainty, after her smile had faded.
“Benjy!” Fabian yelled, saving Lily the trouble of telling Mary she might be but she wasn’t going to let an infectious disease stop her from saving Ariel from Bertha. “Get over here!”
A skinny blond man in glasses sauntered over to the group, leaving behind the photographer he had been speaking with.
“Yeah?”
“This is Ariel,” Fabian informed him excitedly, clapping Lily on the shoulder.
“Nice to meet you,” Benjy said pleasantly, holding out his hand. “I’m Buzzfeed’s social editor.”
“Ben, she can’t answer you.”
“Oh yeah?”
“She’s lost her voice,” Fabian managed, practically buzzing with the news.
Suddenly Benji’s whole face changed, from slightly stressed young reporter to the same fevered astounded expression that Fabian was wearing.
“No shit,” he breathed, “really?”
Lily nodded.
“You can’t talk at all?”
Lily shook her head, feeling more and more sympathy with Ariel with each passing minute.
“Fucking brilliant,” Benji celebrated, grabbing her shoulders.
“You should film this,” Fabian announced, moving back to Mary and beginning to work on her hair again. “That would be amazing.”
“Yes, yes, yes,” Benji agreed, “would you mind?”
“You should probably check with McGonagall first,” Marlene suggested, pointing at their manager who was giving directions to the photographer whilst Dorcas fanned herself.
“Sure, sure,” the journalist noted, not sounding too concerned, “will someone get her into her costume,” he called, as he strode back across the room. “I want to do this asap.”
Thinking that she might hurry the process along by putting on her own wig, Lily erased the note on her phone and simply typed out ‘wig?’ before showing it to Marlene.
“What does she want?” Fabian asked absentmindedly.
“She wants to know where her wig is,” Marlene answered, causing Fabian to swivel away from Mary again in outrage.
“They make you wear a wig?!”
After Fabian had recovered from realising Lily wasn’t allowed to have her natural hair, he decided to take matters into his own hands.
“I’m in charge of the shoot styling, and I say, you’re using your own hair.”
Not really in a position to argue, Lily had watched as they transformed her hair from a curly, frizzy nightmare to long, flowing and bouncing waves that fell perfectly around her face and over her shoulders. She’d never seen her hair look so good. And sure, it wasn’t Ariel’s colour, but it was close.
Whilst her hair was being transformed, another stylist had appeared to apply her make up. Lily was used to wearing Ariel’s make up but she wasn’t used to having it tweaked to suit her own eye colour. It was the smallest of changes to the eyeshadow but suddenly, the make up fit her perfectly. As she watched herself in the mirror, it was as though she was somewhere halfway between herself and her cartoon counterpart.
“You look amazing,” Fabian appraised, still playing with the ends of her hair. “I can’t wait to see you in the tail.”
Not having heard this news before, Lily’s whole face lit up – her eyebrows jumping into her hairline.
“She gets the wear the tail?” Dorcas yelped, appearing out of nowhere and into Lily’s mirror.
“Of course!” Fabian said, causing Dorcas to clap. “We’re doing the scene after Ariel rescues Eric and brings him to the beach. You can’t be a mermaid without your tail!”
Finally pleased with her hair, Fabian moved away to Emma with one final squeeze of Lily’s shoulders.
“James Potter is about to lose his damn mind,” Dorcas whispered into Lily’s ear as they both grinned.
With this thought ringing in her ears, Lily made her way to the costume section to look for her tail. Finding Ariel’s costume wasn’t hard and she found putting on the bra and top part of her tail like slipping into an old pair of pyjamas.
“Ariel! We’re ready for you.”
Hearing the photographer calling her, Lily managed to signal to Dorcas (now in her civilian clothes) and hand her the fin.
“Here, I’ll walk with you,” she said, taking Lily’s elbow to help her balance.
They moved slowly and steadily towards the main stage and in the distance, Lily saw James, in full costume, lying down on the set, eyes towards the ceiling.
Her heart gave a quick thump.
“You really like him,” Dorcas observed quietly, squeezing Lily’s arm. “Your whole breathing changed when you saw him,” she explained, after Lily gave her a questioning look.
Ignoring that, and not really caring that Dorcas was right, Lily continued to wiggle her way to the set.
“Ariel has arrived,” Dorcas announced to the room, shocking Lily and causing all the heads in the room to snap to her.
And just as James lifted his head to see her, suddenly Dorcas was nowhere to be found.
“Wow,” she heard him breathe as their eyes met and she saw the look of pure attraction come onto his face.
“She looks good, right Potter?” Dorcas called teasingly, and Lily quickly became aware that not only were they being watched, but Benji was currently filming with a handheld camera.
“I can’t believe I’m getting paid to do this,” James responded softly, his eyes never moving from hers as the room laughed.
“Oh my god, they’re not together, are they?”she heard Benji say to Dorcas.
“Okay, Ariel, if you could just lie down beside Eric,” the photographer cut in.
Feeling a little ridiculous as she wobbled over to James, Lily just about managed to get to her knees when James’s arms came up to her elbows to steady her. With effort, she placed her body in between his arm and his elbow, head hanging over his. “Hi,” he said lowly to her, in his own sweet tone and Lily could only smile. “Marlene tells me you’ve lost your voice?”
She nodded earnestly and he smiled in response, causing her to blush when he pushed one side of her hair over her shoulder.
“So…was that you on the phone earlier or...?”
Again, Lily nodded.
“Right,” James coughed, “sorry for calling. I just…”
Managing to interrupt him by shaking her head, Lily gave his forearm a quick squeeze.
“Anna, can you attach her tail?” The photographer asked Dorcas.
“I’m on it!”
“Right, so everyone knows the scene. Eric is passed out, Ariel, you’ve just saved him from death. He’s the most beautiful human you’ve ever seen and this is where you decide you’ll do whatever it takes to be with him.”
Lily nodded to acknowledge she’d heard as she held up her feet for Dorcas.
“Just smile, play with his hair…you know – the usual.”
With one final look, James let his head fall backwards and his eyes close.
“Music!” The photographer called and Lily heard the refrain of ‘Part of Your World’ sweep around the room.
Deciding that the only way to do this without her heart beating out of her chest was to be completely method, Lily did her best to pretend that no one else was in the room as her hands moved to James’s hair. The quirk of the left side of his mouth was the only sign on James’s face that she had touched him.
Smiling down at him, Lily flipped her tail and moved her fingers down past his eyebrow, over his cheekbone and down to his jaw, suppressing a full grin when James inhaled deeply.
In the distance, she could hear the sound of the camera clicking furiously.
“Okay, Eric, we’re going to try a few with you awake, so open your eyes.”
Lily’s breathing skipped when her eyes met James’s hazel ones and she almost forgot she was supposed to be acting.
“Heh,” the odd sound he made before swallowing thickly.
Lily looked at him quizzically.
“I’ve just remembered how we get your voice back,” he explained, eyes pouring into hers as the music swelled and his hand drifted into her hair.
She probably should have stopped him, given that they were surrounded by all of their work colleagues, but with absolutely no desire to, Lily’s eyes fluttered closed as their lips met.
He kissed her tenderly and so softly that Lily, wanting more of him, pressed herself down against him as James’s left arm encircled her waist. She revelled in the feeling of his lips against hers, her hair falling down around them and shading them from the eyes of the rest of the room.
It was only after silence rang out around them as the music stopped that they broke apart, eyes meeting each other again. Lily couldn’t help the small smile that crept onto her face when she saw the look James was giving her.
He had just swept her hair behind her ear, when a loud wolf-whistle echoed around the set.
“Well, did it work?” Marlene shrieked, removing her hands from her mouth.
With a quick glance at James, Lily tried to speak…and what came out was a garbled, hoarse cough and the most horrid sound she had ever made.
The entire room exploded in laughter, except for James who was still smiling up at her.
“Oh well,” he said quietly, nudging her nose with his, “guess we’ll just have to keep trying.”
And then Lily remembered that McGonagall was in the room. And oh fuck, James had just kissed her in front of her boss.
Gesturing for someone to come and take the tail and help her up, Lily tried to look everywhere but James whilst also avoiding McGonagall as well.
“I got you,” she heard Marlene say from behind her and soon after her feet were free. “Dressing room?” She asked urgently, as she helped Lily to her feet. “That was the hottest fucking kiss I have ever seen,” Marlene told her quietly, as they stumbled towards the back.
Lily had so many questions running through her head – mainly did McGonagall look like she was going to eat them alive – that she wasn’t able to focus on how great the kiss had been.
When they reached the backstage area, she lowered herself into her seat and tried not to panic.
“Look, don’t freak out,” Marlene reassured her, catching sight of Lily’s expression, “you can say you were just acting.”
Lily was about to respond when she saw James coming after them, jogging lightly.
“On a scale of one to ten, how stupid was that?” He asked, seemingly directing the query at Marlene but looking at Lily.
“Probably a ten,” Marlene answered.
“Can I have a minute to chat with Lily, please?”
“Nope, you’ll need me to translate.”
Lily squeezed her arm and Marlene sighed.
“Okay, fine, but I want all the details later, you hear?”
As Marlene left, Lily felt her heart start to beat rapidly again. Fuck, she liked this boy way too much. Enough that she was endangering her job just to kiss him.
“Okay, it kind of sucks that you can’t talk,” James started, pulling a seat around to face her, “because I can’t tell if you’re mad or not. Are you?”
Not able to stop a smile appearing at his nervous bashfulness, Lily shook her head.
“Good,” he breathed, breaking out into a grin, “because I’ve been thinking about kissing you for three weeks and I really want to do it again.”
Feeling the butterflies swooping around her stomach, Lily’s smile widened.
“I checked the staff rules a couple of weeks ago” James continued, letting his hand come out to fall onto hers, “and apparently, I can’t ask you out.”
Again, Lily nodded.
“So, basically what I wanted to check was if it would be coming on too strong to quit and then ask you out?”
“Yes, it would be, Potter,” a voice said as they both jumped. “I would have at least suggested starting some form of clandestine relationship before resorting to quitting,” Minerva said, glaring down at them both, “or I would have before you kissed Evans in front of the entire cast.”
“Eh, yeah, sorry about that…”
“And stop looking so worried, Evans,” she continued briskly, “no one is going to quit.”
“What?” James asked, his hand still firm on top of hers.
“The rule about dating was put in place after the Dave debacle,” McGonagall explained, “to deter similar behaviour and to prevent us losing half the cast. We’re not going to fire either of you for dating each other. Particularly, when you’ve been driving the entire Park insane with your ridiculous flirting.”
“We weren’t that ridiculous,” James said quietly, looking a bit peeved.
“I’m also assured by Benji that the footage of you both this afternoon is certain to go ‘totally viral’ – it would be illogical for Disney to fire it’s two most popular cast mates.”
“Right,” he noted, his eyes meeting Lily’s. “Does that mean we can kiss in the Park?”
“Not a chance, Potter,” Minerva replied, “you’ll have to help Evans get her voice back on your own time.” And with that, and a wink, she swept away, back towards the set where Jasmine was scolding Aladdin.
“Worth a shot,” James grinned, standing up. Eyes dancing, he leant forward and pressed a quick but meaningful kiss to her lips. “Well that seems to be that sorted,” he said against her lips, pulling back a little to let his forehead fall against hers, “so, what do you think, Evans? Go out with me?”
Still reeling from the surprise kiss, and with her hand clasping his, Lily smiled up at him.
“Yes.”
Mermaid Request
Summary: A Legolas x Mermaid reader story.
Requested by Anon
Enjoy ~
‘It’s windy.’ Legolas thought as he viewed his surroundings. The wind sent a wave a chills throughout his body. The frosty tips on the grass and dried clumps of leaves on the ground indicated the growing coldness. Legolas gracefully walked upon the hardening ground, not bothered by the small drifts of frost etching the corners of his shoes, or the harsh wind blowing against his face. He even felt a small smile creep up upon his features, feeling content. It was nice to be away from the potent lifestyle being the Prince of Mirkwood ensued. It was nice to be surrounded by nature in all its glory.
From afar in the river nearby, a shiny, a glistening form moved beneath the depths of the waters. Legolas stared with curiosity and caution. He could not help but move closer from his stance, inspecting the thing as if it were an ancient book derived from the Valar. ‘A tail.’ He thought with realization, as he put the pieces together. It was also quite long for a tail. His hand instantly reached for his bow that was placed around his torso. Even the wonders of Middle Earth could also be very dangerous. But still, the mysteriousness of the tail kindled his growing curiosity. As a prince and a warrior, he should know better than to feel a deep sense of wonder for a mere encounter, but today, he was not a prince, nor that of a warrior. He was simply a nature loving ellon with a heavy interest in his current setting. Legolas inched closer, using as much of his elven eyesight as gifted to him to view the living thing.
A large splash caught him by surprise, leaving him instantly reaching for an arrow, sheathing and aiming it in the direction of the creature. His eyes scanned the water for a reappearance. Soon after, he spotted a torso attached to the tail.
This caught him extremely off guard.
His netted his eyebrows in doubt. Mermaid. He had been told stories of them as a young Ellon. Although he was skeptical, he enjoyed the old tales for entertainment purposes. Now that an actual Mermaid was displayed right in front of him, he did not know what to think; or to do. Mermaids were extremely reserved creatures, so for one to be lounging in a lake was odd. And the only reason Legolas knew this was from reading a Middle Earth mythical creature lore book he found in the library out of pure boredom. Mythical.
The newly identified Mermaid rose, emerging onto the surface of the water, revealing the face of a female human. Her eyes were (e/c) and she had (h/l), (h/c) hair. He couldn’t believe his own eyes, smiling at the floating form before him. The mermaid waved a hand through her hair, shaking her head lightly as she went through the minor tangles. She was too focused in her own thoughts to notice Legolas watching her so intently with wonder.
“Hello.” He greeted gently.
The mermaid looked up, widening her eyes at Legolas as if he had just broken into her home. “I am not going to hurt you.” He assured in a soft tone, not wanting to scare her away - or cause her to unleash an unknown wrath he somehow missed in the creature lore book.
Abruptly, she dove into the water, disappearing from his sight. Legolas, fazed and slightly embarrassed, looked down at his weapon. 'Perhaps it was the bow..’ he thought.
~
None but a few days later, he returned with nothing but a slim dagger tucked into the safety of his boot. He had just escaped his duties of writing a report of a scout that had taken place the day before, by asking a guard that accompanied him to write it instead.
Walking back to the spot he spotted the mythical being, he glanced around the area. Sitting down to wait. He thought as he sat. Perhaps I had scared her off…
He questioned himself before, as to why he was so inclined in this mermaid. Was it his love for the stories he heard? Or the feeing of discovering something new? Something had definitely grasped onto him, a newfound curiosity that provoked his venture to this spot.
He unconsciously smiled as he saw a familiar shimmer in the water.
Poking out of the water, she realized Legolas was sitting on the grassy patch as he stood days before. “You were here before…” she said hesitantly.
“I was.” He responded casually.
“What do you want?” She asked defensively.
Legolas stared, dumbfounded. “I beg your pardon?”
“Communication with non aquatic beings is strictly forbidden…” she informed.
“Why is that? If I may ask.”
“Mermaids are not accepted into society by the humans. They think we are deadly and murderous, and even tried killing us with spears and arrows when spotted. So we stayed in the deepest regions of the oceans and rivers, living a confined and reserved life. Now all we are to them is a mere myth. A fable.” She said.
“I am not going to hurt you.” Legolas assured. “I am an elf, have you heard of my kind?”
“I have heard stories of tall, immortal and beautiful beings with pointed ears to grace the lands.” She said, smiling at the recollection.
Legolas smiled at the description. “I too have heard stories of your kind, although not ones of you being 'murderous’, just of creatures that roamed the waters with the upper half of a human.”
“I am Legolas. I do not think I have asked you of your name.” He said.
“(Y/n).”
“How unique…” he smiled.
(Y/n) smiled in response. “Legolas. Your name is unique as well.”
~
Legolas sat comfortably on the grassy ground. Three months had passed, and on the day the ice that formed atop the rivers and lakes was gone, Legolas ran to him and (Y/n)’s unofficial meeting place at once. She was there, waiting for him, mythical form naturally submerged into the water. They caught up on what they both missed, listening intently and laughing with each other as though they had only seen each other the night before. Oh, how he had missed the sound of her quiet laugh and smiling face. And she had missed him, missed all his quirks from the way he stood to the way his mouth opened to talk.
“What is it like?” (Y/n) asked, breaking the pleasant silence that befell upon them.
“What is what like?” Legolas retorted.
“Living out there..” (Y/n) said.
Legolas met eyes with (Y/n), trying to find ways to respond to her question. 'Lonely, without you.’ He yearned to say. He couldn’t help but notice the small hint of sadness dipped into her inquiry. If he had any idea how many nights she spent gazing up to to sky wondering if he was blinking back. She wanted to know, know what it felt like to feel the ground beneath her. If it wasn’t for the lower half of her body, she would be able to easily do so…
“It can be incredibly breathtaking. The trees often speak to me when I spend my time in forests, although it is mainly the sound of their roots groaning deeply…” Legolas began.
(Y/n) chuckled softly, nodding in amusement. She was enjoying this much more than the stories she had been told as a child.
“Parts of the lands are filled with flowers that have unique scents and all sorts of colours you can imagine, and some parts filled with snow and smooth pebbles. There are vast fields that go as far as you can see, and forests filled with trees and the smell of foliage.”
She could not help but imagine herself in those fields, leaning down to smell the fresh scent of a flower, or walking upon the cold snow. She smiled sadly and said, “That sounds…amazing.”
“For all these years I have lived…walking upon these lands and venturing the dangers and finding beauty, I have come across a very special sight. It is my most favourite place to be, that whenever I go to stay I feel not only immense fondness…but an everlasting love that I have come to find through each time I spend in that spot.” Legolas confessed.
Was he revealing his undying love for a mermaid that he met months before? Legolas couldn’t help but imagine life with (Y/n). Spending his days and nights with her, casually talking and lying in a comfortable quiet. He smiled at the thought. Maybe what he was about to say wouldn’t be so bad…
Of course Legolas had thought this through time and time before. He always recalled one of their conversations that took place a few weeks after they met.
“Would you ever..be able to walk upon the land?” Legolas asked.
“Perhaps. The ruler of our race, a godly being, is able to gift us with the ability to walk as long as we have an acceptable reason. So far, no one has ever had an issue so dire, so no mermaid has ever roamed the land.”
Was love a good enough reason? She spoke of how she wished to walk, to discover new things and escape the confined life she lived. Legolas wanted nothing more than to give that to her.
“Describe it to me.” She said, smiling.
“It is a patch of grass, overlooking a rather large lake,” He said casually, viewing his surroundings.
“That is all?” She giggled.
“I am not finished.”
“Go on then.” (Y/n) urged.
Legolas smiled. “There is a mythical being, who fascinates me beyond words, and holds a profound beauty that leaves me gazing at her every feature when she looks away. One who I have come to know, and have fallen deeply in love with…”
“What made you fall in love with her?..” (Y/n)  asked, almost whispered.
“Everything. Her smile, her compassion for living things, her fascination with the world. I find the fact that she manages to find beauty in everything immensely admiring. Valar, I could listen to her laugh forever…” He could. He wished to.
“She must be very lucky to have you.” (Y/n) said, sounding indistinguishably hurt. Giving one of her smiles, she looked away.
“Really?” Legolas asked, chancing how far this little game would go.
“Of course. You truly are the most wonderful being i have ever had the immense pleasure of meeting…” she blushed ever so slightly, “meeting you has been one of the best moments of my life.” (Y/n) confessed, truthfully in all its glory.
Legolas was in a trance. Her voice, her profound confessions, her admiration. Her.
“It is you.” Legolas admitted. Their eyes found each others immediately, (Y/n)’s holding a rather shocked glaze.
“You love me?”
Gently, he said, “I love you.”
(Y/n) smiled brightly, feeling a tremendous euphoria wave over her.
Not for the first time, Legolas felt an urge. He wanted to kiss (Y/n), to feel her lips against his. Receiving the bright idea to do so, he stood up and began ridding himself of his moss green tunic and brown boots.
(Y/n) laughed gleefully, “What are you doing?”
Before Legolas had the chance to answer, he jumped into the deep waters. Rising from the water, he grabbed the sides of her face gently. “This.” He said, leaning in to taste her lips. Valar, everything about the moment felt so extraordinarily divine. How was it possible to be so overcome with joy? Pulling back, he said, “I love you so much.”
“I love you too.” (Y/n) claimed joyfully. She had never endured a moment quite like this, and sincerely hoped to experience more. She would leave, for him. She could leave.
“Join me.” Legolas whispered between kisses.
“It is what I want most.” said (Y/n).
~
It had been a year later since Legolas and (Y/n) held each other in the lake, a year since they admitted their strong feelings toward one another. It took a while, for (Y/n) to get used to walking, and she was embarrassed at the fact that Legolas practically had to carry her everywhere. Not that he minded, finding it incredibly adorable when (Y/n) would blush whenever he picked her up. It was a work in progress, after all.
“It’s been a year.” (Y/n) said, holding onto Legolas’s waist while they stood on the balcony to their bedroom.
Legolas looked into her (e/c) eyes, smiling. “Has it?”
“A year since we first kissed.” she bit her lip.
“Shall we relive the moment for old times sake?” Legolas said, slowly leaning in.
(Y/n) smiled, and Legolas thought of how all the smiles he had witnessed, he found hers his favourite.
