Sausage did a wonderful Job with the music and cinematography for this opening that I could Really fucking gush over for Ages, and I won’t do that here you do Not wanna read a cited essay but sausage absolutely understands the class and elegance of octagon paired with the jagged threatening front it has.

Ren stood in front of the  mesh of tracks, the railroad like tracks spread off into the distance, under the half built dome.  Rows upon rows of them, stretching into the distance slightly merging if he let his eyes rest in one spot.  Among the wood and iron, picked out in gold, something that looked like an eight-sided knot.

As he stared at the odd, nearly mansion sized, array - a few flaes of snow floated down into Ren's hair.

Ren's partner in whatever this was, Doc, had said that this was supposed to bend "the fabric of space-time"? as he called it.  

Well, given the season - this was as good a way to test it out as any.  

He carefully smoothed out the bow on the top of the paper wrapped parcel, just the size of his hand and placed it in the chest.

6.12 miles away somewhere, resting on a high peak with snow blowing in his face, Doc felt something settle into his pocket.

He pulled it out, avoiding the bow and shredding a corner with his clumsy paw until a purple glittering piece of glass fell into it.  The note read. "Ever since we found those crystal's purple's been popular! This should fit into your cane - or the robo-leg. <3 Ren.

He scribbled a note back. "Check the kitchen." and placed it into his pocket.  6.12 miles away, the chest filled again.

Movie Review | The Octagon (Karson, 1980)

This isn't very good, but maybe worth seeing for the cast. First and foremost, you get Art Hindle, who just a year earlier played the most divorced man in Canada and in this one treats his girlfriend abominably, which makes you wonder if he was more at fault for his marriage falling apart than the other movie let on. (Whaddya mean he wasn't playing the same character...) You get Lee Van Cleef, who is gruff and steely but with a twinkle in his eye as always, but given that his character doesn't meaningfully contribute much to the plot, you wonder if he owed somebody some shooting days. You get Tadashi Yamashita AKA Bronson Lee, who I suspect was brought over on Chuck Norris' insistence, given his background in Japanese karate films, but mostly makes you appreciate Sho Kosugi's star vehicles all the more given how little he has to do despite playing the main villain. You get a few recognizable faces in smaller roles, like Tracy Walter, Brian Tochi, Ernie Hudson, who's really jacked in this and is really jacked now and was probably more jacked in Ghostbusters than anybody realized, and Richard Norton, looking like the porn parody version of Norris with an even worse moustache and mop haircut.

As for Norris, who falls flat as always when playing heroic and is not at all helped by the echoing narration that probably sounded in the theatre like he was sitting behind you, whispering sweet nothings in your ear. But he has good chemistry with his co-stars, and one wonders if he'd be better respected as an actor if he'd instead made a career out of good ol' boy supporting roles, stepping in for a few minutes to back up the boys and mack on some honeys while opening a can of whoopass on the bad guys. I'm thinking like Bo Hopkins in The Killer Elite. Certainly he would have proved more engagingly threatening to the ninja villains in that movie than Burt Young, whose easy elimination of countless ninjas in the climax provides an embarrassing low point in Sam Peckinpah's filmography.

Anyway, the plot involves a ninja training camp in which an international assortment of terrorists, mercenaries and other nogoodniks attend to learn the ninja ways. This thankfully avoids most of the racism of other movies of this era in its depiction of this lot, although the diversity of the villains means that this probably reflects Norris' views on DEI. Norris and Hindle also bitch about their government being unable to stand up to said international threat, so there's probably some stuff to unpack if you're looking for it, although it's less blunt than his movies for Cannon. (Also, given that some of the characters include Canadian terrorists and it takes three ninjas to take down Art Hindle, this is the most fearsome Canada has ever been onscreen.) This is also firmly a product of the Carter era, in that it has that extremely brown look and a generally low energy level. I guess the Crisis of Confidence extended to ninja movies. There isn't very much action until the last twenty minutes, and while those come up short against pretty much any of the Cannon ninja movies, they're an oasis in the ninjitsu desert of the rest of the movie. That being said, given that Carol Bagdasarian's character spent a good amount of time in this ninja training camp, it's a little lame that she spends the climax shooting people with an assault rifle. That is not the ninja way.

Archaeologists Find a Beautiful 3,000-Year-Old Octagonal Sword in Germany

A rare Bronze Age sword unearthed from a burial site in Germany is in such good condition that it still glimmers.

According to a statement the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection released on Wednesday, the weapon was discovered in the town of Nördlingen in Bavaria, and may date to the 14th century B.C.

"Last week, archaeologists made a very special find during excavations in Nördlingen: a bronze sword that is over 3,000 years old and is so extraordinarily well preserved that it almost still shines. It is a representative of the bronze full-hilt swords, whose octagonal hilt is made entirely of bronze (octagonal sword type)," a translation of the statement reads.

Its octagonal shape make it a rare find, as only the most skilled blacksmiths were capable of making these types of swords—known as Achtkantschwert in German—that required precise casting and decoration.

"The production of octagonal swords is complex because the handle is cast over the blade (so-called overlay casting). The decoration is made with an inlay and using hallmarks. While there are two real rivets, another pair of rivets are only implied," the statement said.

These rare and specialized swords were only made in two locations in Germany at the time, one in the north, one in the south, although the exact location of this sword's origin could not be confirmed.

This find is especially unusual considering that most burial mounds in the area of Germany where the sword was discovered have been opened and looted in the past.

"Sword finds from this period are rare and come either from burial mounds that were deliberately opened in the 19th century or as single, presumed sacrificial finds," the statement said.

It is unclear if this octagonal sword was ever used in combat, or if it was a ceremonial blade.

However, archaeologists noted that while the blade had no signs of wear in battle, its center of gravity made it suitable for use as a real weapon, and it was capable of being used to slash opponents.

The grave in which the sword was found contained the remains of a man, a woman and a child.

"It is not yet clear whether the persons were related or what the relationship between them was," the statement explained.

Despite these questions, the sword marks an exciting find for the archaeologists and for Germany.

"The sword and the burial still have to be examined further so that our archaeologists can classify this find more precisely. But it can already be said that its condition is exceptional. A find like this is very rare," Mathias Pfeil, head of the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, said in the statement.

The array glistened as seen from above in the moonlight, the water and glass below like crystal, the steel of the re purposed train tracks like filament. Ren watched as the great pile of soft golden sandstone bricks set at it's heart slowly disappeared, alongside the occasional spare battery for the rocket pack. Half the glassy surface lay hastily empty, steel and gold pulled up to make the receiving array. Ren thought of Doc's arms, his hand touching Ren's as they placed metal. Ren's hands were still streaked with soot, but in some other world his friends were now waiting for the fires to pass in the sandstone bunker, as he would be soon. Looking at where the sandstone was dissapearing, Ren reached into his pockets. Flowering bramble for adversity, whole handful of dandelions laid out to cover a brick for travel, and a single deep red rose for affection. They dissappeared. Ren smiled at the petals that appeared arranged in an arrow. He grabbed his oars and knapsack and headed out to rendevouz with the rest of them.
