Probably the biggest problem with The Acolyte is what really bit it in the ass in the finale--its main characters did things because of the plot, not because they were organically built up or made sense. I could mostly overlook it in previous episodes because it felt like there was still more time to reveal the characters' motivations, but now that we're at the end, there's just so little throughline for either of the twins' characterizations. Mae makes the most sense, you get why she was so angry, she always wanted Osha to stay with her, of course she'd drop everything when Osha was alive, but then suddenly she's just completely okay with Qimir erasing her memories of Osha? Of giving up that relationship that drove her the entire time--and Qimir says this was permanent, I doubt Mae had reason to think otherwise--in half a second flat, not just physically separating her from Osha, but erasing her entire relationship with her?? And Osha makes even less sense, we all joke that about how hot Manny Jacinto is and how he ~seduced her to the dark side, but honestly her motivations just seemed utterly gone in the previous episode, she's 100% ready to drop everything she believed in and go with him just because? And up to this point she's barely shown any interest in her connection to Mae, it's all "tell not show" that Osha cared about her, we're told that it was her biggest wound, we're told that she felt that connection, but we don't really see it until suddenly she's running away with Mae because apparently all along she felt that pull towards her? Intellectually, there are reasons given in the show, but I didn't feel any of them, it was more "Osha behaves this way because the plot needs her to behave this way." It's the same reason Sol can't say, "It really looked like your mother was going to kill you when she started Force-dissolving you, so I reacted without realizing what she was doing." because if he's allowed to explain, then the plot falls apart. The plot demands that he half-ass his explanation rather than because that felt natural to Sol's character. Things happen because the characters need to get from point A to point B, so point C can happen, rather than because the characters felt like they would actually do that. And it's worse because these are your main characters, the entire plot of the show is set around them.

You’re scolding yourself again.

As you watch him rise out of the clear, crisp water with droplets rolling off of his succulent skin, the voice in your head telling you to run quiets down. It all but turns silent when he smiles at you, canines on display. Your heart picks up speed because you’re reminded that he’s a predator through and through.

“You came,”

He acts surprised, but he knows you’d follow him anywhere. It took all but a glance to get you to fall for him the first time. Now, all he has to do is whisper your name and he’s sure you’ll come running.

You don’t say anything. Wooyoung’s lips twitch, “Thought you’d be happy to see me.”

“I’m not.” You spit these words out with a practiced venom, Wooyoung smiling at the betrayal in your voice. He can see through your lies from a mile away, trained until he could spot every little tic your sweet face gives.

He lets out a sharp, mocking laugh. Your body is confused on whether it’s infuriated or totally enraptured.

Wooyoung steps closer, but you take a step backwards. He looks you up and down, “Why not?”

You shake your head and back away even further, “Stop contacting me. It’s unseemly.”

He keeps stepping towards you, droplets of water rolling down his toned stomach, “You said that last time.”

Your back hits the rocky wall. You realize now how stupid it was to follow him out here to such a remote location. He’s probably done toying with you now, tired of the games you play and the chase you give. Your lungs try desperately to catch air now, with Wooyoung’s menacing stare and vicious smile all directed towards you.

He feels it. The quickening of your heartbeat and the pulse of your body. He walks to you again, pulling on the abandoned wool shirt he’d thrown haphazardly towards a rock earlier.

His hands land on either side of your head. He’s caging you in, “This’d be a lot easier if you just did what I asked,”

You can’t hear yourself think over the sound of the waves crashing. Or maybe it’s just Wooyoung who has that effect on you. He’s cold where his torso touches your revealed skin, eyes boring into yours as every second passes. You start to think he’s even stealing your air with his attempts to be as close to you as possible.

You start to feel claustrophobic, “What do you want from me, Wooyoung?”

The smile he gives you makes you sick with butterflies, pulling you in until you’re an inch away from his lips, “I just want you.”

His lips are still wet from the ocean. It’s salty and breathtaking. He’s breathtaking, like a jump from the highest cliff. He takes you over with just his mouth, exploring the inside of you with his tongue. You can feel his hands on your hips, possessively pulling you in as if you’re already his. The voice in your head is back now, shouting and pleading for you to ignore this giant ball of desire that’s imploding inside of you.

Wooyoung’s quiet whine into your mouth shuts that voice down again. He squeezes your hips, smirking into you as your entire body melts and dissolves into the entirety of him. You don’t even realize he’s won.

[...] Nowadays, when people recommend shows to their friends or co-workers, they might say, "The first season is kind of slow, but it gets really good in Season 2." People often say that about The Office, an accomplished sitcom. Even Succession, one of the greatest modern dramas, is a slow-burn in its first season. These shows benefited from their networks having faith in the writers. The first seasons weren't perfect, but they had enough spice to make an even better second season. Aren't all first seasons just an experiment to see what works and what doesn't, so that showrunners can improve in the next season? Streaming services don't allow the same grace period. Pilot seasons are a make-it-or-break-it situation for streaming. Shows get churned out like they're made in a factory, and one false mechanism gets it thrown in the trash. There's no time dedicated to fixing the faulty wiring or drafting up a solution. TV shows are so expensive that big streaming services aren't willing to take the risk. They'd rather renew shows that have been ongoing for several seasons already, or are plain safe options for audiences. It's fair to say The Acolyte wasn't for everybody. The series slowly shifted into an enemies-to-lovers plot mixed with a religious conspiracy by the end that some people naturally won't be attracted to. Story-wise, it wasn't going to be for everyone, but it was definitely for a lot of people. The amount of positive reviews by critics and Manny Jacinto acquiring new fans proved as such. But as more shows led by women, LGBTQ+ creatives and POC get canceled, it sends a signal to other networks or services that people aren't interested in their stories. It limits the amount of diversity allowed in the entertainment industry. It also permits the obscene animosity that's fragmented the Star Wars fandom. If Star Wars wants to continue to be a dominating franchise in this industry, it has to learn to take chances and stick with them. Otherwise, the world will move on while it's stuck in the past.

There were not many but Acolyte cosplayers were indeed in attendance. Sunday was the big say for us Acolytes as Manny Jacinto was doing a panel (Albeit about another show he was on-The Good Place-with a fellow co-star) which I attended, it was awesome! But the real highlight was going to the Acolyte panel that was also being held that day. I was worried that the panel might be a roast of the show or that hecklers might show up or that I was going to be the only one there. But no, I'd say at least 25 people showed up and all of them were stelwart fans. The panel was a plot rundown of the show mind you, the panelists were trying to keep it spoiler free. Which, was kind of pointless as everyone there had already seen the show. One of the panelists was interesting because she said that even though she did not hate the show, she had beef with it. She did not get a chance to explain what that beef was (the hour we had flew by so fast) but after listening to all those in attendance, she actually said we might have just changed her mind for the better. The real treat was just being able to be around so many other fans of the show, in person no less, I was even able to get up and give a pitch for the campaign to save the show. I passed out a bunch of QR codes for the petition. Each with the hope that it will be passed on to others. The panelists didn't even know about the campaign. They were especially impressed when I told them that there had even been billboards in time square pushing for the show's renewal. but overall, just being in the presence of so many fans was like taking a bath in pure positivity. throughout the weekend, I was able to converse with people and the consensus was that the Acolyte is a good show and does deserve a second chance. It's just a shame that there is so much toxicity in the fandom, that studios always seem to bend to it and Star Wars is nothing but a cash grab for Disney. The state of streaming services also deserves some of the blame as well as they keep cancelling good shows just because said show did not become an overnight success. Then streaming services wonder why audiences are so disenchanted and less willing to give other shows a chance. It's so silly. So yeah, it was great to be able to talk to people in person and get some honest to goodness discourse.

Bro I’ve been seeing this everywhere, since they noticed some people don’t care about what they have to say about the show and are still going to watch The Acolytes they started push this narrative that Qimir is abusive, groomer, or Creep.

Which blows me because it’s coming from accounts that were literally just saying how great he is or he’s the only thing they like about the show and how he’s their favorite character and how they’re only watching the show for his fight scenes.

But them saying things of this nature caused people to have this mind set of maybe I’ll watch this quote on quote “shitty show” at least for him and his fight scenes.

So now they’re back tracking and saying how terrible of a person he is and that he a weirdo groomer who’s looking to date/sleep with his pupil.
